We visited Carlisle the last time we were in the Lake District, its quite a drive from Ambleside, but well worth it, The Lanes Shopping Centre is in the heart of the town centre, has great shops, surrounded by plenty more shops and coffee bars in the town. Well worth a visit.

It's always a nice and clean place to venture around when we travel to carlisle, I usually park my car in the disabled spaces not far away from the shopping centre and normally head towards Costa coffee for a much needed coffee fix and a break from all the driving. The indoor shopping reminds me of the mill gate in Bury Greater Manchester area where I used to live nearby before me and my carer moved to Whitehaven in January 2020. And after visiting the lanes we normally head off to the Toby Carvery before we head back home. Plenty of shops to look around and all wheelchair friendly. The huge bear was a favourite this time around to take some family photos to keep as I don't get to spend a lot of time with my grown up children here pictured just recently. Take your family here and enjoy a fantastic day, its got a lot going for it.

bit cramped for my liking. Clean enough place. Toilet is a climb to top of the stairs and across a corridor.

Located in Carlisle City Centre within walking distance of the Citadel and Market bus terminus, Bus Station, and Railway Station. A good mix of independent, chain, and popup shops can be found in The Lanes, including Card Factory, EE, Primark, Superdrug, New Look, Perfume Shop, and Grape Tree. There's also places to get a bite to eat and a drink such Muffin Break and Costa. The Lanes has public toilets and a pay as you exit Car Park, so no rushing back before your ticket runs out. It is also home to Carlisle Library.

Welcome to the lanes shopping centre! The usual chain stores plus some local shops and ‘pop ups’. Good parking, central location. Small and friendly 😀

This was a beautiful place lots of wide areas to get round in wheelchair. Only downside was coming out of lift for toilets there is a children's ride with lights shining straight into eyes in lift and is blinding.

Main shopping place in the centre of town. Also include places to get a quick bite to eat or tea/coffees or just a cold drink. Good range of shops around it to

A very bright, airy and clean shopping centre with a good offering of shops with something for everyone, was a very pleasant surprise, wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

Busy place, unfortunately some of the shops have closed down like most places these days, public toilets are onsite and very clean, security always around so you feel safe enough.

Nice variety of shops with well lit parking. Sadly some empty units but that's a sign of the times I suppose with big (and little) names closing as online buying increases as an aside of the Covid-19 pandemic. Support your local shops or risk losing them 🙂

Look, the car park gets some bad reviews, and the shopping centre its self is a bit samey. However there usually something going on, there's a free indoor playpark so the kids can have some fun, there's a decent range of shops inside and a large selection of cafes to suit most tastes. I personally would like to see the council doing something about the rent and rates to try bring more variety to the shopping centre and town as a whole.

Really a good place for family shopping got most famous brands, clean walkways, a library, etc. Got a post office, couple of banks and food shops behind lanes. Pay'n'park available but closes by 6pm.

Not the best. The niche shops of I frequent purchases are expensive eg The Grape Vine for nuts dried fruit etc though their herbs are better. Cafes eg muffin shop are expensive.

I have always liked the Lanes Centre in Carlisle. Everything on the ground floor, no empty units, easy parking, good shopping experience, and everything within or in the vicinity. Train station only couple hundred meters away.

It's fine, plenty of parking. Toilets are on the first floor, but have lift access. There's just not enough shops in Carlisle in general due to high rent prices Vs footfall

It's an outdoor but covered mall. A lot of stores although there are still too many "for let" signs, probably due to the pandemic. Still, a very charming place to walk through and explore. Totally recommend.

  • 4/5 Andy C. 1 year ago on Google
Lots of reasonably priced parking spots, fully undercover with some seating so you can watch the world go by but suffering from the current financial problems with quite a few empty stores. Even so id still consider it one of the jewels of the city centre.

Walked through here to get from car park to the castle. Masks needed inside the shopping centre even if not using the shops. Brilliant covid measures sometimes saw people not wearing masks or in bigger groups than 6 but looked clean and plant of signs

Not a lot to offer here I'm afraid. We visit Carlisle every year when we come to holiday in the Lakes. Every year there is less reason to visit. With the demise of Hoopers and Debenhams the alternatives are abysmal.

Primark is exceptional value for money for nightwear underwear and clothers , Friendly staff and well organised The only problem is the cosmetics as many people have experienced allergies, with many products e.g. Lip liner lip gloss & eye liner I personally avoid buying makeup from Primark chains Some clothing is made using cheap materials so always check the labels and any fraying or loose threads to determine quality as sadly the company has a culture of fast fashion creating a growing problem of textile waste once an item is gone it's gone as lines sell out quickly depending on fluctuations in tastes and trends many lines follow a repeating pattern of catering to sizes small to medium leaving a large majority unable to find anything to fit their shape many products are sold as one size fits all (underwear .bra's & shoes ) however sadly that is rarely the case

Lovely shopping centre lots to see. Friendly service. Lovely city

  • 4/5 Ash D. 1 year ago on Google
The Otter statue in the centre is worth a visit, as is the Itinerant Fiddler. Also alot of art pieces on the wall. Good place to wander about, wide flat corridors with many small shops, and it has lifts. Seems generally accessibly designed. Can get very busy and loud. There are some benches around to sit down at, and public seating areas near some restaurants. Roof overhead means rain isn't a problem while inside.

Clean & easy to navigate. Maybe removal of one way system would be good, no one's following anyway

All the usual shops and a nice wee quirky shop outside. Had musical group on at Debenhams entrance (shut down), they were fab 👌 cheered the place up

Lots of different shops in the Lanes with a few void spaces where shops have closed. I went in to have a coffee and muffin at the Muffin Break best muffins in my opinion in Carlisle and good coffee you have to try it.

  • 1/5 Tim I. 3 years ago on Google
Everything is closing down and not a good selection of shops that are open , the council really need to get their finger out with some incentive to draw shops in , be nice to see independent shops that last

  • 4/5 Ruth W. 3 years ago on Google
A great space to shop. Huge variety of shops so plenty of choice for everyone. Just gets a bit too busy and crowded for my liking but I suppose it's to be expected with a popular shopping centre.

Zero Internet service!!! card payment only carpark, cash only payment stores! System is down no public notifications. spent half an hour in JD just to be told, I had to go look for a cash machine places a shambles

The Lanes shopping Mall does have a few empty spaces which is a great shame for Carlisle and Shoppers because it means there is a lack of additional choice and it can also look less appealing Shoppers. There are too many empty spaces, maybe someone needs to re-evaluate the rental paid. Surely keeping Shop owners longer for less will bring more funding longterm to the City as a whole?

  • 5/5 David F. 5 months ago on Google
This is a very good shopping place. It has the library and toilets. Also cafes and lots of shops. I managed to do all of my shopping here the other day. It does not have supermarkets but lots of other good shops.

Nice selection of shops and reasonable priced too. It looked like the high street like most of the UK has been hit hard as lots of shops closed down and some left empty. Shame as its a nice area nice shops and a multistorey car park.

First visit to Carlisle, quick bit of shopping with misses whilst on holiday Lovely town, sorry city with lots of history, not to big and busy but not a small back water either The lanes is essentially the centre of town, plenty of shops cafes and restaurants and bars Modern clean and spacious, sadly Debenhams now closed has left a large empty store, but the lanes still has plenty to offer Usale city type ring road in and out, car parking was OK, no issues

  • 4/5 Stacey G. 11 months ago on Google
Needs a few more shops. A different variety would be nice. It all seems to be food and empty lots. Muffin break has given more choice to lounge in but this takes up the outside area. Meaning if your shopping there are about 2 benches in the whole shopping centre to have a rest.

  • 5/5 Garry D. 1 year ago on Google
Variety of shops and under cover. Toilet facilities are excellent, but on the same floor as the library!!!

  • 3/5 Clare S. 2 years ago on Google
Sadly the Lanes are suffering the same fate as all high streets. Good few shops now empty units, but what is there is good. Not as many shoppers these days which I liked. Relaxing couple of hours, great being able to look at things without getting constantly jostled or barged past.

It was really quiet - unsurprising for the time of day I was there. Good signage for the one way system operating and there were visual as well as verbal reminders to wear face masks. The number of empty shops in the Lanes was a downer - not surprising though given the least 15 months.

  • 4/5 EmmasAdventures 2 years ago on Google
Clean and tidy, just a shame that lots of the shops have closed down. (I know that is the case in lots of places). Shops that are there are great though.

  • 4/5 Valerie H. 2 years ago on Google
Spent a pleasant hour or so in this attractive pedestrianised shopping centre which I entered from the old market square. There's a good mix of independent small shops and big household names that include Next, Primark, Clarks Shoes, J D Sports, HMV and some well-known jewellery and phone shops but sadly also a few empty units including the former Debenhams store. In the centre of the lanes there's a nice bakery and an open café seating area. It was not very busy when I was there so social distancing was not a problem. Plenty of facilities including cash machines, a foreign currency exchange and an escalator and lift up to a library, toilets, photo booth and car park.

  • 3/5 JKB77 7. 2 years ago on Google
Nice clean facilities but not a lot of shops

  • 3/5 B D. 2 years ago on Google
Visited the area to view local services as a member of family will be studying in area for next four years. Stopped at lanes shopping centre to get some items and refreshments, very easy to find and we'll designed. Not sure I would park in carpark again, height restriction going into and you have to drive up onto first floor to park car, one way system could be better. Disabled parking advertised on second floor. Being a private carpark .....you have to pay to park, local council parking accros Road is free for three hours for disabled. All shops on ground floor , mixture, toilets on lower floor basement. Access apart from stairs is via three lifts, and these take a while if shopping centre busy... they also stop at all floors if called for when trying to go to ground floor. Good mixture of shops and food halls, well designed and one way system in place for Covid 19, observed a employee cleaning drainage pipes with sanitiser as most people stand outside shops and touch. A fee premises a empty, but you can still find what you require in reason and at a reasonable price, good place to go and wander around and access to main shopping area can be found near primark entrance...local shopping centre and tourist information centre. Wandered around local outdoor market, so many traders and vendors selling hot food from around the globe and everything from perfume to shoes and socks. Will visit again, not sure about parking cost though as other parking can be found closer around one way system.

It's ok ,policed by arrogant security and shops look run down in parts but if you need the shops in there you have to go , must wear a mask as security officers are jobs worth's and rude ! Like everywhere there are empty shops but those that are open are worth visiting. Got some good bargains in Jack and Jones and the young man serving us was really pleasant. Great coffee cart set up near the rear of the centre. Personally I thought his coffee was better than Costa.

It used to be great here, but unfortunately now a lot of the shops have shut, particularly H&M and Debenhams. I know that's the fault of the 'Rona but it's a shame that they haven't been replaced with a new shop.

I like The Lanes shopping centre. It reminds me a bit of Lancasters Shopping Centre or Stirling's Thistle Centre. Its all covered, a good range of shops and facilities available, and festively decorated at the moment. I enjoyed our stroll through.

  • 3/5 Richard B. 2 years ago on Google
Not the place it once was. Sadly Covid and the changing fortunes of the retail industry has left a significant number of units unoccupied. In the current climate, I'm not sure how this is going to be reversed; especially finding a retailer or retailers, to fill the cavanous space previously occupied by Debenhams. As a plus point, the Lanes Parking allows you to pay upon departure, so there is no need to risk of you running over on the parking you have paid for.
