Great place for a walk. We parked in the free carpark next to the wood. We did a few miles along the canal, then back via the river. Hirst Woods is also a great place for a walk with mud paths throughout.

Free car park and on street parking nearby. Perfect for a walk by the river, canal or through the woods. Easy walk to Saltaire or a longer but still easy walk towards Bingley and Five Rise Locks.

Watching a heron at the bottom of the overspill, lot of debris at the top of the runoff

The locks are on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and are a good place to visit for an afternoons walk. With car parking nearby on Hirst Lane you have access along the canal to Saltaire (30mins) or a little further towards Bingley 3 and 5 rise locks(40 mins). The locks are next to and with access to the nature reserve and a circular walk along the river Aire to the aqueduct and then back along the canal. Parking is free, no toilets but theres a cafe (Higher Ground) near the carpark. Walking along the canal towpath is flat and easy - good for buggies or wheelchairs. Information boards with routes are next to the lock.

Watching someone bring a houseboat-barge through the self-serve, hand operated locks is fascinating and fun. A perfect way to observe the happenings of the 1800’s and learn how locks work. Hiking the towpath is a tremendous pastime as well.
