What a wonderful place to stay. We arrived in mid September and the weather was perfect for a holiday and found Hillside Country Retreat a really relaxing place to stay. We booked a ensuite room with breakfast, which was served in a gazebo with had lovely views of the surroundings. The breakfast was great and Joy the owner was very helpful telling us what were the best places to visit. We love everything about Hillside Country Retreat from the very comfortable bed and the sound of the birds in the morning. We fully intend to return again as this was a wonderful place to stay and highly recommend it.

We stayed here on the weekend of the 24 June 2023 in the Morris ensuite room. The weather was colder than we are used to but the room was well heated with either wood fire or reverse cycle. The timber floors did creak but after we settled in we didn't notice it at all. The lighting in the bathroom wasn't ideal for shaving or make-up, but it was all nicely clean. We had a Bed & Breakfast stay, which normally we wouldn't entertain because we find it uncomfortable being in someone's house with other people. But the units were not part of the house, and breakfast was in the gazebo room about 50 metres away surrounded by trees. And breakfast both mornings was a great way to start the day on a positive note. One must keep in mind that it is an old property so the buildings and grounds are not without imperfections, but that is part of the character of the property which is a peaceful oasis in a sometimes far too chaotic world. It was also a pleasure to meet Joy who sees herself as the custodian of the property, but is in fact, more like the energy that sustains it, and makes it such a delightful place to visit. Finding a place to stay that you want to come back to is like finding a treasure. Next time we plan a getaway to York, we will do our best to do so around when we can book a room (or chalet) at Hillside Country Retreat.

Fantastic location, Joy was very friendly and accommodating. The detached cottage we had was nice and cool with AC units in each room. The kitchen was well appointed and allowed us to bring our food and cook here. Scenery is beautiful. Will come back again.

Stayed for 4 nights over Easter just gone 2023. Always a brilliant country stay. 4th time being back and will definitely be going again. Stayed in Julian's which is the biggest accommodating up to 9 people. The owner Joy is as always going out of her way to help. Our 5 month old puppy had a great time even sleeping with us inside. Highly recommended for couples or families. Just one thing if you stay at Hillside, if you see a problem ie: maintenance, just say something to Joy because if she doesn't know about it she cannot fix it. Wi-Fi was excellent. Cannot recommend highly enough. Thanks Joy

We had a lovely 2 day stay in Peppercorn Cottage, the cottage was homely, clean and very comfortable, and it had beautiful touches including paintings and curios which added to the feeling that you were somewhere special. We used the fire which kept us warm the whole time. We felt very comfortable and our border collie enjoyed the space to walk and roam. We will definitely return here for another escape.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hillside. Joy was very welcoming and cooks a brilliant breakfast. The B&B is everything you’d want for a country retreat, it’s surrounded by beautiful gardens and inside is clean and cosy. Highly recommend staying here when visiting York.

We had a wonderful time at Hillside with our German Shepherd. Beautiful spot, right next to town and Joy was so lovely and extremely accommodating! Exactly what we needed and wanted. Could not fault it in anyway. We will definitely be recommending it to friends and family. Thanks again Joy, for your hospitality 🤗

Thanks Joy for a lovely June long-weekend with our family of three plus two German shepherd dogs! Our self-contained accommodation had everything we needed including a cosy wood fire, well-equipped kitchen and comfortable beds. Our daughter loved exploring the extensive gardens with our dogs. It was a highlight for her spending some time with your grandkids too - please thank them again for us - such friendly kids. An easy walk into town and we were lucky that York had kids activities on that weekend. One of our favourite dog-friendly holidays! We hope to come back again soon! THANK YOU! Bel, Tom, Isla and dogs Greta and Max

We have just spent 2 absolutely wonderful nights here. Joy the owner has spoilt us with her daily delicious home cooked breakfasts and was an amazing host. Our accommodation was a gorgeous, country rustic retreat which was spotlessly clean. We look forward to returning back soon. Thank you Joy!

Wow Factor 10/10. Even though it was dry it was absolutely stunning. From the individually uniquely decoarated rooms and houses. You can’t stop admiring the old antiques and memorabilia everywhere. Was great for our large group who wanted there own space but close enough to all be together. Cannot recommend Joy and her beautiful Retreat enough. Do yourself a favour and enjoy this unique place. And so close to surrounding places of interest

Wow. What an amazing historical homestead. A unique property that has transitioned from farming to tourism with a variety of accommodation options. Some awsome things to wander around and look at. Certainly not just another short stay holiday option but one that is amazing.

As highly reviewed by many, the owner is very accommodating and very welcoming. Toured around the area and offered help when needed. The houses we stayed were very cleaned and very homy. Stayed in Julians and Beverleys as a group. Highly recommend for a stay in York. Very near to the town area. One of the accoms I stayed with very great views of the field and surrounds.
