Bravo to the architects and engineers that embraced these historic structures and continued to make them relevant amidst new development and design. Instead of turning their backs to the past, they embraced it and built a people friendly public square for people to use and linger. 40 steps itself isn't that old, only about 150 yrs old relative to the Roman gates and walls around Southampton but still a part of Southampton's connection to the sea.

Historic landmark offering great views, of the town walls part of the Southampton old town walk. Breathtaking architecture which was built to protect the city. We really enjoy visiting it now and again. History lovers this is a fabulous place for you. Popular meeting place for families, school children, Bikers etc. If you haven't visited it's worth paying a visit this summer.

Nice, clean and tidy - been here a couple of times to see Kapow wrestling and was expecting sawdust on the floor but pleasantly surprised to see a well maintained and clean hall. Easy access for wheelchairs and plenty of parking

Good view of medieval walls, but another example of the privatisation of public space, and the development blocked safe cycling access to the quays.

This is a very nice way to view the city. I would really recommend walking around the walls starting from the west quay espanade and going towards the mMayflower park. If you follow the walls you will have a view of both the modern characteristics of the city as well as the old town which makes an amazing contrast. Highly recommended!
