Growing up in N.W. DC I was privileged to be exposed to an array of different cultures. Being raised in that kind of enlightenment equates to access to a smorgasbord of worldwide FOOD!! On this day I chose to go to @shaggarestaurant for some delicious Ethiopian cuisine. Located on 6040 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville M.D. this spot gives you a true taste of Ethiopia 🇪🇹 with its traditional ingredients. Menu items include salads, chicken entrees like Doro Alicha (tender chicken simmered in onion, garlic, ginger and herb butter served with a boiled egg placed on Injera bread $15), Yesiga Tibbs (Beef cubes sautéed in onions, green peppers and herbs $15), as well as fish, lamb and vegetarian options. For a quick lunch we chose an order of lentil Sambusas (pictured-pastry shells filled with your choice of chicken, beef, or lentils $5 for three), and their Doro Wot ( pictured-tender chicken simmered in spicy red pepper sauce called Berbere, garlic, onions, and herbed butter sauce $16-instead of a boiled egg we got potatoes). You can eat the entrees and/or sides with a fork but...I recommend that you lay your fork down and eat this meal with the Injera (a slightly sour, fermented flatbread with a spongy texture traditionally made out of teff flour). Eating this food by tearing off a piece of Injera and scooping up your meal just feels right, as the textures and flavors blend together perfectly!! I highly recommend @shaggarestaurant via quality food, grand customer service, and a calming environment...especially if you’re trying Ethiopian food for the first time. Again, the customer service was grand, they exuded patience, we were treated warmly, and there are just straight up kind people in this establishment. Parking? There was plenty of parking, so no worries about that at all. Y’all, I took some quick snapshots of the artwork on the walls...simply beautiful!! You can get your food to go, delivered via third party or eat inside the restaurant. Look I know you’ve had Ethiopian food before, GO THERE and have theirs!! If you haven’t had Ethiopian food before, GO THERE and have theirs!! Trust me!! That’s it. **This establishment is Covid compliant**

Delicious Ethiopian food! Everything we tried here was great- we go the shagga combo which was enough to share between 3 people. It was pretty busy on a weeknight so I’d recommend a reservation if you are planning ahead!

I was set to go here with a SC friend and treat her to a belated birthday lunch. After TWO weeks of planning this back and forth through email/text she forgot and was at Renn Fair 🙃🙄 (which had multiple dates by the way.) I was suppose to treat for her birthday. Now that's def being on hold/postponed. So, I went by myself. The décor is beautiful! Lots of authentic Ethiopian works and a few customers came while I was also there. A cute Asian guy and a White couple, so it brings a pretty diverse customer base! The food is plentiful and I took home leftovers. I got the Yebeg Alicha and Potato Alicha (side.) It came with 2 extra Injera! The only things I'd change would be 1) going with someone who wants to go or have fun alone, 2) the music is a mood killer and sappy sad music on repeat, and 3) the mango OJ is bottled and I thought it was house made. Go alone or with a friend, who can go too! Authentic Ethiopian music would have set this restaurant apart. Please alert customers you have bottled drinks. (My hopes were kinda let down more 🙃.) Parking is okay, wish it was flatter/bigger but at least it's free. It's gonna be my spot for Ethiopian food now, whether alone or with company!

Beautiful vegetarian platter and the waiter was very nice. I would recommend this place for dinner instead of lunch. They don't have a lunch menu and food doesn't come out super quickly. If you have time for a leisurely lunch it's nice because it's not crowded, but definitely don't come here if you're in a hurry.

Very good food, service, and establishment. The vegetarian combination for one was $13. The dish came with large portions and all food ordered was freshly made. I love the music choice of a simple piano, it added a relaxing atmosphere.

We have tried a few different Ethiopian restaurants in MD and VA and this one is still our favorite. The combo meals are the best bang for your buck and haven't found any other place that does the combos similarly. You get three meats as well as as veggies! The staff are very welcoming and I'm sure they can do substitutions as needed. The quantity of food you get is great and everything comes out hot and fresh. And of course, the flavor is amazing and all are delicious.

Delicious spot to eat, enjoyed every bit of it. The portions are quite large so leftovers are guaranteed. I got the Veggie combo which comes with everything pictured. Only slight issue we had was during the shift switch and we were left waiting for some time. Definitely recommend this spot if you're in the college park/ route one area.

I came here and ordered the Veggie combo for 2. The food here is delicious with nice color and taste. I ate my half and I was very full, I definitely have other menu item in mind to try next time. They also provided awesome service. They also do have dine in.

A bit on the pricier end. Food was good, service could be improved. Portion sizes are large, but still wouldn't pay this much for it in my opinion. Otherwise, it was cooked well and most of what we ate was tasty. The chicken and lentil sambusas were definitely a highlight.

The food was amazing. I ordered lamb with the veggie combo. Out was exactly what I was looking for. And I had to take some home. The servers were very nice. It felt like the food took some time to come out, but that's not a negative. Just don't come if you're feeling like you're starving, lol. I am not from the area, but if I was around I would stop by again. And the pricing is spot on!

Dining area and bathroom were very clean, service was warm and friendly, and the food was exceptionally flavorful—I got the vegetarian combo. Will definitely be coming back!

Shagga is, in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best Ethiopian food in a very competitive DC market. The Tibs are the most flavorful I have ever had. The sides are also well made and have excellent flavor. Be aware that when you visit you will not be rushed, but it’s best not to be in a rush either. The food is excellent but it can take some time. Allot over an hour for visits to Shagga, or order your takeout accordingly.

The portion sizes are a joke 🫤 We got the Combo Dish which explicitly said for 2, but they were soooo small. I hate to give this a negative review, because the food was actually very good, but the small portion sizes were disappointing.

They have the best combination of food and it’s affordable and the service is very nice. Don’t forget to taste the Sambusas (Appetizer). Sweet!

This place is a hidden gem and I’m glad my parents told me about it. Everything from the sambusas to the doro wat to the mesir was simply amazing. There is plenty of food to go around and everything is freshly made!! I definitely will return and can’t wait to do so.

This food was banging. The server Jamil was very friendly and quite attentive. I ordered the lamb ribs platter. It comes with a tomato and lettuce salad. The dressing is mixed in and it is bussin. I will definitely be back. Located right on Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between the Exxon and 7-11. Thanks Jamil for the great customer service. Five star treatment and delicious food

So much fun trying all of these different vegetarian entrees, and everything was so delicious! This was more than enough food for 2 people and under $30 after tax. What a deal! Our waitress and all the staff were very friendly. Can't wait to come back!

The dish is Ethiopian in the best representation of it. Caring and considerate customer service! Smile is plenty on the face of the people serving and a smile of the ethiopian sun shine! Quite place for talk. They give a primo of Vega good food of traditional food and it simply makes your eating start with joy, and it is free and comes as a surprise! Thank you Shagga for excellent dish and surprising Primo!

I have now been here 3 times and have loved it every time. Food is delicious. I had the vegetarian combo plate and loved every flavor. The spicy tea was a great complement. The service is fast and friendly. Prices are right especially given that I always take a bunch of it home for a 2nd small meal. My daughter always gets the fish stew and loves that.

Went here with vegan friends and we all had the vegetarian sampler. The food was absolutely scrumptious. The staff were gracious and lovely and the atmosphere was very pleasant with really nice music playing. I highly recommend this restaurant! We'll definitely be coming back!

I love Shagga Ethiopian restaurant! The staff are super nice and made my wife and I feel so welcome. The food is amazing, especially the cabbage, the tilapia and the kitfo. Everything is so flavorful and fresh. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves Ethiopian cuisine or wants to try something new.

Hadn't been here in years and now I'm wondering why we've been going anywhere else! The food, the environment and the service are all top-notch. We got a mixture of different meats/vegetables and our group had a great time!

It was empty when a friend and I visited this restaurant. It came recommended by a friend, as it was my first time trying Ethiopian food. I will definitely be back. The younger lady that took care of us was really nice and attentive!

Authentic Ethiopian restaurant offering Ethiopian delicacies. The restaurant setting is authentic, the staff are friendly and hospitable. The parking though is small. If the place is busy you may end up missing place to park. The prices are very friendly. Its good for individual and group reservations. The restrooms though could use abit of maintainance. Yes, I would definitely come back for more tasty Ethiopian cuisine.

Location and interior won't wow you but very cosy place. Food is extremely affordable the wait staff is friendly and most importantly the food is great. Such a solid find and much more than just a pretty good local place. this place is worth making a drive to.

I called my order in, and when I arrived I was greeted with the sound of soft jazz and polite staff. The best part was the food. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! Shagga you did not disappoint. I am so glad that you have remained in the area. :-) (ordered veggie platter for one, #18 combo with gomen and miser wot)

Love it! For two people we got the vegetable multi platter and meat combo #2 (lamb alicha and beef wot). The food was great and the flavors were fantastic. The meat was really tender and rich. The staff are also really nice and answered the questions we had. Great experience

This was my first time trying Ethiopian food. Everything was great. I had the combination Beef Wot and Lamb Alicha, couldn’t decide which I liked more. The servings looked deceptively small but with the Injera bread, I filled up quickly and had to take a doggie bag home Will definitely need to go back

This restaurant has been talked up to me for months and I’m glad I finally went. Just wow! There is no comparison to American cuisine that would make sense so please leave any preconceived notions at the door. All dishes whether meat or vegetable are full of flavor. If you have issue with spicy food you will need to let your server know. But for those of us who like to live, it is a real treat!

Very tasty fresh and delicious Ethiopian food. A good balance of spices without being too much. This is our favorite place for Ethiopian food which is a great compliment considering all the other options in the DC area.

Shagga is a local gem, run by a local family. The bright, all-windows dining room is very pleasant. The hosts are gracious and friendly. The Ethiopian food is delicious, and served in large quantities. Get the veggie feast for two and you'll be taking plenty home.

They are always so nice to me. When you walk in the restaurant, it smells so good 😋 The food is so delicious. I won't go any place else to purchase Ethiopian Food.

This place was a nice experience. When we arrived it was empty, but you can dine in - seating is limited (due to pandemic). We ordered the veggie combination (I got to choose four different veggies options) and the chicken and beef meat combination with two veggie add-ons. The flavoring of the food was authentic to someone with a novice palate like myself... In other words, the flavors were great! Our waiter was very soft spoken but nice and got us what we needed. I would come back again
