Coal and Cedar! Incredible atmosphere, incredible service, and the most incredible selection of spirits and cocktails on the East Coast of Australia!!! The price of admission to this throwback speak easy is attention to detail, and it is so worth the investment. This is 5 solid stars in the “must experience” scale. Thank you, Ryan, Sean, and Ashley!!!

As a part of my Sperm Donation Australia tour of NSW, I stumbled upon this cool bar. Had an awesome cocktail, and the staff were also great.

We waited for ages to get in but the crew I was with got impatient. So we went elsewhere. When they all flaked I returned when it was a bit later in the night & I managed to get in, easy as. This was close to closing time so it was nice of them to afford me the opportunity to have at least one drink & experience the place. Nice chat with the bar staff as they closed up for the night. Great service. Lots of drink options. Well stocked bar. Id have given them 5 stars if they stocked my fave whiskey 🥃

You will not easily find this place, but it is a speakeasy after all! Once the hidden door opens however, you will be glad you did. A cool vibe in this place with excellent food and super knowledgeable mixologist who will create a drink on the fly that suits your personal taste perfectly. Visiting from the USA so it was also nice to see our flag on the wall!

Cannot speak more highly of this place, love the speakeasy style entry. The atmosphere inside, the friendly attentive staff, the drinks (the vodka shooter was so great), cocktail yummy and the whiskey very nice. Atmosphere was so great, cannot wait to return.

One of my new favourite bar in Newcastle. Love everything. The hidden bar is so awesome. The bar is located behind a door next to a barber shop, without any sign, so if you find it you feel so amazing. The cozy environment made us feel special and warm. The bartender was very friendly and skilled. The cocktails were great and we could call something off menu as well. We tried Ramos Gin Fizz which was off menu and it tasted amazing. They offered us a free green olive dish as well to pair with the drinks. Plenty of street parking nearby. Will definitely come back.

Great discovery while on a recent visit to Newcastle. After nearly 10 years away from Newcastle it was an interesting few days rediscovering the old hometown . This hidden speakeasy was full of atmosphere , cocktails and an awesome back bar. A huge array of spirits to choose from. Whiskey being their mainstay . However a vast variety of spirits available for those who are not whiskey aficionados . Sitting at the bar is the best place to be and chat with bar staff and get the best recommendations. Thankyou team . Congratulations on an awesome venue.

Located behind a hidden door, good cocktails, average food but good atmosphere. Love the drinks, but they really really need to add to their food menu. I am not talking a restaurant sit down menu or even 4 options. I wish a bar had more than a cheese platter, even more antipasto would be great. If they don't have a kitchen even jarred antipasto would work a treat. All they had was a cheese board. Also not very vegan or dairy friendly.

This place is amazing!!! When you first get there, you have to txt a number with the password provided on the sign for someone to come and open the door. The atmosphere is great and the cocktails are even greater!! Totally recommend! We will be back for sure!

Cocktails are good, but service is atrocious. One bartender gave us attitude coming in, took our order rudely without writing it down then came back to clarify, then yelled at us across the street after we left that we hadn’t paid… when I’d waited at the bar and paid with his colleague. They realised I had and went back in side without an apology.

One of the best cocktail bars in the hood. The cocktails were well balanced and deliciously refreshing. Service crew were friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Newcastle.

Perfect atmosphere, friendly knowledgeable staff. We attended a cocktail making master class and made some amazing cocktails and created a unique original concoction that as delicious. At the end of the class we were provided with another cocktail and a smorgasbord of cheese and meats. We will definitely be attending another class as it was hands down a perfect night.

Went to this fantastic little speakeasy of a bar with some colleagues from work. Old-timey underground feel, brilliant cocktails tailored to your taste, vintage jazz decor, intimate lighting & fabulous music. We all loved it. Keep up the good work.

Great service and great range of cocktails. Sometimes hard to get in due to the "speak easy" aspect especially fiddling with phones and phone numbers and not having the best eyesight... Nevertheless recommend

Went for a haircut blow dry and found out this hidden gem (just kidding) 😀. A character and classy cocktail bar with awesome/amazing bar staff (didn’t make feel I was alone and new there). Tried the “Panic Button” and “Martini” and it was Just too good - didn’t need to press the button. One of the bar staff gave me a Wet 😹shot to try which taste fantastic and I end up asking a customised drink Slippery Nipp*e (Howard Wolowitz) 😀. Didn’t regret asking even though I didn’t got the Slippery Nipp*e but ends up having a “Yonce” created just for me by Cinthia. She is a skilled and great mixologist - ask her for a Yonce when you visit next time . Thanks Coal and Cedar team .

Okay so i never knew newcastle like this...we has a waitress called Ashley, she introduced us so elegantly to certain whiskeys and cocktails and we came back twice in the one night purely for her service and expertise! Absolutely love the atmosphere here also 😍

This place is a real surprise. I hiden dark funky whiskey bar in the heart it Newcastle. It's not cheap but the quality of the cocktails is very high. Great spot for a cocktail before or after dinner.
