Joysagar Tank and Temples, popularly known as the Kesavanarayan or Joydol Temple, ranks amongst the most popular tourist attractions in Sivasagar area of Assam. Joysagar Tank and Temples, popularly known as the Kesavanarayan or Joydol Temple, ranks amongst the most popular tourist attractions in Sivasagar area of Assam. The temple was built during the reign of Ahom king Rudra Singha and carries with the stories of his power and rule. It stands on the northern bank of Joysagar tank, a water reservoir excavated in memory of Joymati. The octagonal Garbagriha or sanctum sanctorum of the temple forms its main component. Two small temples behind the main one dedicated to Surya and Ganesha are also visited by pilgrims in huge numbers The tank and temples, built in the year 1697, within just 45 days, cover a total area of approximately 318 acres. The temple is of archaeological, historical and religious importance. Therefore, it is visited by thousands of people including pilgrims and historians round the year. It is good to keep a note that: The nearest airport to Joysagar Tank and Temples is at Jorhat, and Simaluguri is the nearest railway head at a distance of 16 kilometres.

Sivasagar College, Joysagar, Assam is nearby. The road "Khari-katia" ali starts from here in the North and goes South towards Nagaland. The biggest man made pond of the medieval period is here, called "Joysagar Pukhuri". This temple was established in the memory of Sati Joymati, the mother of Assam's the most powerful Ahom King Swargadeo Rudra Singha by himself. The temple is no more worshipped but the Assamese still visits this place with great pride and respect because Sati Joymati sacrificed her life for the greater future of Ahom Kingdom and Assam to save the nation from tyranny and evil governance. King Rudra Singha dig out a giant majestic pond and the temple to keep his mother's greatest sacrifice unforgettable for the generations to come in the ages.

Built by Ahom king Rudra Singha in the name of his martyred mother Joymati. It is on the bank of the great tank Joysagar. The temple itself, the Great tank and the place remind everyone the bravery of a woman Joymati, who had been tortured to death by Short term ambitious king 'Lora Raja' for not disclosing the hide out of her husband Godapani. Surely a place to visit.

Joy dol : Joysagar Tank, 5 km from Sibsagar town Dedicated To: Lord Vishnu Built By: - Queen Madambika, wife of Shiva Singha Built In: 1734 Highlights: 300-year-old figures of Lord Vishnu Built during the reign of the renowned Ahom king, Rudra Singha, there is a set of three temples, located on the northern bank of the Joysagar tank, about five km from the township of Sibsagar. The most famous among these temples is the Joy Dol, also known as the Kesavanarayan Vishnudole. As the name suggests, the temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu and His many incarnations. The temple was constructed in the year 1734 and has an octagonal shaped Garbhagriha, which is the most sacred shrine located within the temple. The Garbhagriha of Joy Dol is decorated by honey-comb designs and lotus medallions and stands adorned by a dome like structure. Just bordering the sanctum is a small brick-like structure, which was originally meant to be the kitchen house or the Bhog-Ghar. The walls of the main temple are beautifully carved with the figures of various Brahmanical divinities and the various forms of Lord Vishnu Himself. The western side of the temple has a square shaped mandapa. This connects to the sanctum, through an antara or vestibule. Besides the main sanctum in Joy Dol, there are two small temples, located behind the main shrine, dedicated to Lord Surya and Ganesha respectively. The exquisite architectural designs and patterns of the temple are indeed like a feast to the eyes of the beholder and people come from far and wide to appreciate these ancient creations of the Ahom Dynasty. The month of Bhada (as per the Hindu calendar) is very special for this temple. Naam-kirtans and prayers are held throughout the month, to honor Lord Vishnu. This is, in fact, the best month to visit the place.
