The casher lady got a lot of balls to ask customers to basically pay as much as possible, exploiting the fact that most people feel uncomfortable and guilt tripped when confronted to pay "as they feel like". We are on holiday and first time visiting Singapore. My bf hates indian food and it took me some convincing to try dosai for the first time. We googled good rated dosai place. The “restaurant” seemed very weird to begin with as there were no windows and no one could see inside from the street and it almost felt like some secret society going on or whatever as the staffs look very intimidated but we thought to give it a try as it has such good reviews. Even more weirdly, the”menu” did not indicate the price at all but we are on holiday and didn’t mind the price much as after all it seemed like a casual (and rather bizarre) Indian restaurant so didn’t bother asking specifically and we thought it was a courtesy. We just wanted a dosai each but the waiter pushed us to order more and so we ended up ordering two dishes each. Food wise, i thought it was okay and my bf hated it but everyone has different tastes so cant argue with that. Then we headed to pay then a scary looking indian lady came up from nowhere and demanded we pay however we feel like. We were rather shocked by her attitude as she was clearly not asking for altruistic/voluntary donation but giving the impression to pay “as much as possible you can”. We are no local and first time visiting Singapore and have no idea of what is the going rate for such food in this city. So we explained and asked for what would be the reasonable price range but she insisted with such a hostile attitude saying “no no no, you pay however you like”. We felt so helpless and awkward and didn't want to make a scene so we ended up paying 50 dollars for 4 very small portioned Indian street food. Then the lady became satisfied. Later we found out they charge 5 dollars for each dish we ordered for take away/delivery (funnily enough they do have price list for take away), which means we were completely ripped off. But the money was not an issue as we are fortunately from well off country but she could at least have a decency to let us know how much is expected per person to run this institution. Or the better way would have been informing us before we ordered not after we finished. The whole experience felt absolutely awful and left bitterness in our mouths because this place obviously takes advantage of peoples good heart and courtesy, especially tourists. I understand tourists often are expected to pay more however this place was the one of the worst experiences by far because the owner was trying to play some nasty mind game with patrons. They know too well that they can easily guilt trip people, sugar coating this scam as "conscience based payment system" while shaming those who do not pay as they want. How this elaborate scam is allowed to operate in modern country like Singapore is beyond us. The owner lady should be ashamed of herself, absolutely horrific and pathetic.

I must preface my review by saying the volunteer staff are always humble and respectful of us guests. But the woman manager who mans the cash register is a rude and disrespectful money-grabbing creature that shames this establishment and its original founding guru, as well as the values it stands for. Just glance through the other one-star reviews here to see I'm far from the only person who thinks so. When you arrive at this place, two large, ornate carved wooden doors obstruct your way in. There are no windows inside. The feeling is one of unwelcomeness even before you enter, and claustrophobia when you are inside. The food is unremarkable and inconsistent. And you are obliged to pay a pretty penny for what you get. On both occasions, we paid more than what the food was worth, for reasons that are our own. On the second time I was here, the rude creature that resembled a woman pointed out a table to us, saying, "Table number 17. Move please!" Without so much as a glance to us. Oh, "move"? Are we cattle that are being herded? Even the cows in India are treated with more respect. When we paid and left, I handed her cash, which she snatched violently out of my hand as if the money might fly away if she wasn't quicker. Not a word of thanks was uttered, not a mention of "How was the food? Is everything alright?". She just said, "OK! Done." Yes, "done". On their website, they say: "Annalakshmi embraces the act of giving in more ways than one." Evidently, they do give in more ways than than one expects. And expect to reap that which you sow.

Great food and great concept. There's no menu. Only a fixed buffet, you pay as per what you think the food, location and experience is worth for. Food was delicious. Tasted like simple home cooked meal. Strongly recommended. Concept is based on trust, belief, humility and people paying honestly what its worth.

This place have an unique concept, “eat what you like and pay as you like”. There is no menu, this is an Indian vegetarian restaurant which serves a different menu of Vegetarian Lunch & Dinner Buffet on all days. Especially the lunch on Fridays will be very good. I visit this place very often and never disappointed with food. During weekdays for lunch there will be queue and sometimes waiting time and after food pay as you like. Usually we pay SGD 10-15 per person, since food will be tasty and very hygienic. Ambience is mixed with Indian culture, lot of paintings and idols of gods & goddess. They sell paintings, idols, pickles, powders and many items. Do visit and enjoy the food!!

The food is actually quite nice. No more lassi but the butter milk was good. Poori and papadum were great the sambar, dhall and dishes were nice and healthy food to eat. atmosphere is better than the previous location as it is more “open”. The only area to improve will be the service. As in other reviews, the staff can do to be a bit friendly. The challenge is to pay the give the right amount for the meal as seen in the other reviews too. For those who are thinking of making a gain or to profit, suggest better not to come. The rental for them is not cheap and there are other costs like labour to account. So come only if you are prepared to be a bit more generous to give. Yeah and remember to return the tray after eating.

This was my first experience at an Indian restaurant. The atmosphere and other staffs has been pleasant. However I was flabbergasted by how the cashier blatantly asked us “do you know the cost of food”. I do believe her words were not due to the amount we paid as some others paid lesser. Perhaps she mentioned that due to us being of other races and younger in terms of age. Although we did not confront her we do not condone the actions of the counter lady and we do hope that the restaurant is able to better their services for the image of the restaurant which we love.

Ambience: Overall good ambience and a perfect place for pure Indian vegetarians. Taste: I found typical South Indian taste even in the North Indian dishes. IMO food quality and hygiene was great but the taste was quite average. Also, as a part of drinks I ordered lemon juice but the taste was unsatisfactory. Pay: "Eat as you want, Give as you feel." If this is the philosophy that you would like to walk on then you shouldn't be taking money directly instead you should ask your customers to put inside a cover or dropbox or some other digital way where cashiers do not need to know what customers are exactly paying. Overall experience is quite average as the lady at the cash counter attitude was like we are here for a free meal. I would instead recommend you to go to Little India or some other place for Indian vegetarian options.

I’m probably biased but I’m very partial towards businesses that feel very sincere and their food and service are very GENUINE and sincere. 😭😭❤️ I ate here for the first time recently and I was SO CONFUSED ON HOW EVERYTHING WORKED BUT THE lady was so patient with explaining how the payments worked and how the whole buffet worked. Patient and pleasant service aside, the food just felt very comfort-foodish. Generous servings and generous variety with a drink to top it all off, everything was very well prepared and came together nicely. I had the loveliest meal. While this might not be anything stunning or mind blowing, it just feels very warm coming here to eat, which is a rare experience I don’t always get. Queues get terrible during lunch though, so come early! :) Cheers, and will continue to patronize this place.

For lunch, only the buffet was available (price is up to the customer but $15 was expected). Found the buffet to be average overall. The sago dessert was too sweet. The variety of dishes could be better. The pilaf rice was not bad but the tomato rice dish wasn’t so great.

Food choices has good variety. Only suggestion is to be able to have some Hot Tea or Coffee or Lassi(they used to served while located at previous venue/Central Mall. Current location in Shenton Way has relatively Smaller Space. This cld be their reason of cutting down some items/food services?) Overall it's still a very nice place to dine and to enjoy free flow of Vegetarian meal(self Help, Buffet style). Well done Annalakshmi. Keep up the good work.

I visited there with my family. The ambience was amazing and so divine. The volunteers were polite in serving food. But quite surprised to see a very little portion of the food that we received. We were much reluctant to ask for more, we were not aware that this restaurant has “Eat and Pay as you wish” policy until I reach the cash counter. And when I paid some reasonable amount, the cashier’s facial reaction was not happy. The way cashier communicated with us was hostile. We felt a bit insulted and being judged. I understand their very good intention to serve people. But if they are also business minded, they should increase the food taste , portion and humbleness to receive better outcome in return. Else, better follow regular restaurant policy so that customers will able to save their reputation and no need to be felt insulted or judged and Both parties ( Restaurant and customers) can be benefited with regular restaurant policy. I felt “ Eat and pay as you wish “ policy is jeopardising their actual intentions.

They should just state a fixed price at the door and remove the pay as you wish concept. Pay $15 or more if you wish would be a better concept. Because at this point it's fake and just for show if the cashier lady keeps giving an attitude until you pay $10 or more. Until you make the payment she will be passive aggressive. We were told to leave if we were done in an aggressive sarcastic tone cos they needed the table she said. And there was no queue and several free tables. The Indian duo who sat at the next table sat longer than us were never told that, we came after them. Definitely racially motivated as I've experienced similar behaviour at another Indian restaurant. The other volunteers were kind and hardworking. While that cashier lady was mostly bossing the other lady around.

Indian vegetarian buffet-style restaurant where you eat as much as you'd like and pay whatever you think you should. The food was filling and tasty, and the concept is great.

Me and a friend went to this place out of curiosity. ‘Pay as you wish’ they said. I was like ‘what?’. Then that got me curious as to how would they live up to their own system. So after me and a friend ordered and finished dozens of their deliciousness, I asks him as to how would they feel if we just pay SG$2. He says let’s do it. And that’s what we did. And they asked us (or one of them if I remember correctly) as to where was our ‘giving attitude’. So I reminded them of their system. But then they just still telling us about the ‘giving attitude’. But then took our offers. Wow isn’t it. Now, I get the whole ‘giving attitude’ thing. But that was just to show as to whether people have enough integrity to their OWN system for the customers or not. Great food, great atmosphere, but lack high integrity. Such a terrible experience.

I went to this restaurant w three of my non-indian friends and they have not tried Indian food before. things have changed from last time a lot. there's no more buffet type so food is served to you. as per tradition here, you pay for what you think the food deserves. the food was great. we paid $5 each and the staff questioned our ability to judge prices. well, thank god we weren't having a bad day and we didn't pay too much care to it. however, I did feel a little upset as the one who brought them here so I hope things can change :)

Food quality and intention of organization is good. But certain service staff have selective attitude problem and this will make sure I won't come back. They won't serve food to all tables equally and won't apologise for their mistake of forgetting(intentional?) items. Some orders were taken from customer's backside which is not polite. Would request management to ensure that those who serve food understand the real meaning of this. Even though I am aware majority here are volunteers, those who serve need to know the meaning of equality and guest courtesy.

Food is as good as ever! Am impressed with how some dishes were change instead of just topping up. Flavours were on point. Varieties was good enough. Note that this place is fully vegetarian and run by charity basis. Indian food is usually around 10 bucks for a thali set in Singapore. If you are going for 2nds, do give at least $15. Will definitely visit this place again soon!

'Eat as you want, Give as you feel.' It used to be located in Chinatown, but moved to OUE Downtown in early 2023. I visited the Chinatown location twice before, around 2011 and 2012. The experiences then were great. The restaurant interior was a little dim, but it was spacious enough that the seating area and the buffet queue area had plenty of room for patrons to move around without hindering one another. Patrons had space to cut into any part of the buffet area and get what they want instead of having to move from one end of the buffet line to another, needing to move past the items within the buffet you'd not want. They used to serve either a buffet of varied vegetarian dishes, or ala carte style vegetarian dishes. They served drinks by the order and had lassi back then - I've tried their sweet lassi, mango lassi and orange lassi before. The host tending to the cashier counter was an elder man who's friendly and enjoys little conversations with patrons as we pay as we feel. We don't feel pressured at all in any way to pay stipulated amounts or whatnot. Since their move to their OUE Downtown, I visited twice, in March 2023 & May 2023. The space within this location is much smaller, though the interior design is more brightly lit and refreshing. The restaurant only served buffet now, as they have a separate Annalakshmi café within the same building but different unit, that serves ala carte style vegetarian dishes but has a fixed price tagged to each. The room to move within the restaurant now is less, especially the buffet area. The space between the buffet line and a long table for individual diners is meagre. Patrons are unable to get near the buffet to take a look at the dishes first, before joining the queue to the buffet line. We now have to move through from the end of the queue in a line across the buffet section from one end to another, even if you're simply taking 1 or 2 items from the middle section of the buffet line, hence it's more time-consuming and inconvenient. There's higher risk of patrons bumping into each other with such limited space. The drinks now are only limited to water, reconstituted juice and buttermilk, all self-dispensed from drink dispensers. My visit on 24/5 came with an unpleasant remark from a staff tending to the buffet line. I went for second serving of potato masala, which the 2nd batch was just cooked and was way more watery than the 1st batch I has. As I scooped the potato masala into my plate, I saw curry leaves within the dish which I love eating (which to many patrons, it's just a garnish or flavourant which gets disposed off after cooking) and wanted to ensure that the curry leaves are scooped up alongside the potatoes, so I pushed the ladle near to the wall of the pot while scooping up to ensure that. The staff then critiqued that I shouldn't "drain off the curry gravy & just take the potato" in the process of dishing out the potato masala (which the potato cubes were a little undercooked in this batch). I did not want to stoop to her level so did not revert back verbally. Anyway, due to her remark, I halved the amount which I paid from previous visits. That's my way of reverting to her. The taste of food wise is simple Indian vegetarian fare which is flavourful but not overly spicy, so the low spice tolerant would be able to handle. The dishes change often so you'd get to expect different dishes which I typically wouldn't be exposed to if not for dining here.

Great vegetarian friendly restaurant. It's located inside the mall. Had a buffet style dinner, all healthy and hearty dishes. However, there's no fixed price (>$7 if possible). The overall ambience was quite relaxing. Totally recommended for hanging out with friends that have a huge appetite for Indian spices. 👍

The staff here are so pleasant and the food is amazing! Love the atmosphere and the smell of delicious food. It's so cosy and the variety of dishes you can get means multiple visits are going to be possible. This is a good place at Singapore for Vegetarians. I have been here 3-4 times and recently visited on 20th Aug’22. The buffet has started again . The spread of dishes during Lunch was good . You can also order Lassi/Butter Milk as drinks at the table. I paid 50 SGD for 4 persons and didn’t find anyone rude (as mentioned in many comments) . Overall it’s a very good option for vegetarians trying for some good Thali!!

While not explicitly advertised at the restaurant, the "pay what you can" buffet is for real! It might be because we were the only Chinese there, but as my friend and I approached the buffet table, a sweet old lady was like "this is the BEST Indian vegetarian food in Singapore". Idk about Singapore, but it is the best Indian vegetarian food I've ever had haha

Some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I wasn't familiar with most of the food available, which was a great way to discover new dishes and flavors. Everyone was really nice and I didn't feel pressured to pay more than what I gave, which was $15. I think it was totally worth it because everything I ate was so flavorful and rich. Nothing like the Indian food you'd get at hawker centers. I will definitely come back!

Lovely ambience which emphasises on people getting together to dine as a community. I visit at least 2x a week. Some people may find several dishes to be bland or lacking in flavour/heavy spices but I think the style of cooking here is light and healthy. I always eat just 1 plate of food and I pay between $15-20 each time. It's good to support such a unique dining concept to keep this place going. Highly recommended for the health conscious.

Food and ambience of the place quite good. But the lady at the reception her attitude was very unpleasing, she has expectation regarding what we pay. If she didn't receive that amount she is literally asking only this much are you paying. If she is asking like this its better to mention minimum amount to pay. Hope management will take some action regarding this issue.

Indian vegetarian restaurant founded in Singapore in 1986. The food is cooked and served by volunteers. Nearest MRT station: Clarke Quay (Exit B) or Chinatown (Exit E). Open Mon-Sun 11:00am-3:00pm, Tue-Sun 6:00pm-10:00pm. If you are in Chinatown or Clarke and finding a Indian restaurant you can visit this place and have a buffet food in a South Indian style . Food for 15 pax was sufficient and there were a few people asking me about Annalekshmi location etc. We felt , all the dishes were delicious. The disposable plates provided were of good quality. Overall ?? up rating. If you plan to cater vegetarian food (North/South) , I highly recommend Annalakshmi. The price will always be right for food which is Yummy! ?

One of best veg restaurant in Singapore. It’s a hidden jewel. South Indian food and so delicious. You can pay how much you want. If you are a group of More then 2 ppl better to have reservation. Else need to wait for a while to get the table. Restaurant is run by Hindu cultural committee. You can find huge devotional statues beside billing counter.

horrible service for takeaway , asked for two south indian , one north indian. Received all south indian bentos. Probably some miscommunication between them.. all they did was say ‘sorry’ when we called and enquired. Would not recommend 0/5.waste of trip going there for takeaway.

Excellent home style South Indian food. Buffet for lunch so you can try a bit of everything. Mild, not oily and closest to home cooked food. Since it's mostly carb, it does gets heavy too easily so go with good appetite!

Many different types of gravy to choose from. However only limited vegetables dishes although it’s a vegetarian restaurant. The most impressed dish is the dosa. Four flavors provided. All are nice and crispy. This is a charity based Indian restaurant. You pay as much as you like.

One of the best places I must say!! It is a non-profitable organisation which serve different South Indian food variety every day... There is no payment limit... One can pay whatever they feel like be it $5 or $50. The concept is "pay as you like"... And to be true their food is awesome with awesome quality and awesome taste. It is a pure vegetarian restaurant which serves South Indian Delicacies. Apart from food you will also have several options in beverages like Mango lassi, salted lassi, juices etc. Their staff is kind and polite and will serve you with a smile on their face. Ensure that you book before going there as it is generally crowded after 7 pm be it a weekday or weekend. You will always find food lovers there. On the top of all of these you can also purchase Indian Snacks from the restaurant which is available for sale in addition to the Indian artifacts.

I went there a few months back with a friend who really wanted to this try the restaurant out after reading the reviews and hearing from some friends. First, the location, it's not accessible or easy to find, some distance from the train station. I took a Grab there so I was dropped off nearby. The area around seems either closed or unoccupied. We were unsure if we arrived at the right place. You also could not see the inside of the restaurant from outside. As we were early, we tried to entered but only to be turned away quite rudely by a lady. She seems rather senior at the restaurant. We were a little surprised by the lady's behaviour! But we really wanted vegetarian that day. So we hang around and only went into the restaurant again when we saw that other guests were "allowed" to enter. Once we got in, the buffet was ready. We are impressed. The food suits me. My company enjoyed her meal too. It's pretty good vegetarian with good variety (see photo) as well. I love the curried cauliflower and ladyfingers. The other staff in the restaurants are all smile and helpful. Overall it's still a good experience.

Very nice and friendly staff , except for the lady at the payment counter. The food is great. Usually I go once in a month.. but have noticed a slight change in environment/management. Has the lady at pay counter forced anyone else also to pay more than offered? I was taken by surprise , although what I was offering was also according to any other commercial restaurant price. Is it race gender or appearance that triggered this ? Can't really understand what happened coz nowadays I take a step back when my friends plan to go.

A clean, boutique Vegiterian Indian restaurant, with a very traditional South Indian decor, created with a social cause in mind to help serve the needy. You pay forward when you eat for someone else to be fed. Located of Havelock Road, with plenty of parking in the basement.

North indian pay what you want style buffet. Ordered the dinner rice set, othapam masala, sambar vadai and battura. The vadai and othapam make great starters. Battura came out fresh from the oven and it tasted really good. Dinner set was very (maybe too) filling. and a bit heavy. Side dishes in dinner set will rotate. For drinks, I ordered a special lassi and strawberry lassi. Both tested good. (Drinks rotate around too, last time I had lime juice which was good too). Worth a try once in a while. Hard to find North Indian dishes around here. However, they may forget some of your dishes.

Great dosas and south indian food. Their special dosa of the day is normally quite good! Great and polite service in the restaurant. It works on a pay-as-you-wish model, and you may choose how much you would like to. Recommended for all Indian food lovers in Singapore. Close to Chinatown, Clarke Quay and other important places in Singapore.

Great food. I have been bringing friends and family there almost weekly, and so far everyone likes it. There's no fixed pricing (although if u exceed a grp of 10 there will be a fix price), which is what I love abt this restaurant. Usually able to get seats for dinner time without reservation. Personally I like the bread set (naan) with lassi.

Been visited for years. You won’t find such a nice home cooked feeling place with good concept, pay as you wish (hope people not abuse its good concept). Great healthier Indian food. Unlike many restaurants, service is neither sales-oriented trained service nor customer ignorance. Just great 👍

  • 5/5 Maria G. 9 months ago on Google
Very pleasant ambience. Though the restaurant operate on a pay as you wish principle I must say they are very generous with the choices of dishes. They were quick to top up when the food ran out. The food was fresh and delicious.

  • 3/5 Elson G. 9 months ago on Google
The food is normal and the arrangements to get the food is not ideal while crowded during the lunch hour. Saw many leftovers by others on the plates at the wash basin, maybe the taste did not match them. My visit was not as pleasant as my friend found a small metal piece in the potato dish. The price is at your wish between $10 to $15, but prefers it to be fixed while people can donate to a separate box for charity.

Food was good. We went for buffet. Concept is pay as you wish for unlimited buffet. The food was really tasty. It was South Indian buffet. The sweet pongal was so unusually delicious 😍 never had such a tasty sweet pongal even in South India restaurants. They serve ala-carte as well. Ambience was good. For the staff I have mixed reviews few were friendly and few were a little grumpy. But overall it was a good experience.

Food was excellent and tasty. Although many years ago at the Havelock branch the food have more variety and taste better. I think that it is because of the "pay as you like concept", most people do not pay a lot. That is why the number of dish are lesser now and more cost effective dish are served. This makes sense because rental and staff are not cheap for them too. I read through the review and there are some complain about customer service. Personally I do feel it and get what they mean. I don't feel very comfortable eating there, this is the first time I feel this way in a restaurant. Maybe because of the "pay as you like concept", and most people don't pay a lot. The feeling is like you are there for a free meal. It is a nice place and I like the food there, I rather that they charge a fix price for the buffet rather than the "pay as you like concept". Maybe their 3rd floor can have a buffet corner where they charge a fix price. And people will be more comfortable there. I love the food there but I do not want to be treated like I am there for a bargain or free food.
