Kurasu is an excellent cafe that serves delicious speciality coffee roasted in Kyoto. This is a must-visit for serious and casual coffee drinkers. I love the minimalist and modern interiors, with sofas offering comfortable seating. It's the perfect place for relaxing with a brew or catching up with a friend. The customer service is really friendly and the staff have a lot of knowledge of coffees. If you're looking for coffee beans to brew at home, there is a selection that you can buy.

Casual, no frills coffee spot off the beaten track. Friendly staff and nicely brewed coffee. Spacious interior with allows plenty of bright lights entering making it very welcoming. Love it

The coffee was so enjoyable. It was smooth and slightly on a more acidic side. The cafe was also very vibey and great place to have casual conversations and chill with your friends. The only downside was that it isn’t located near a MRT. But nothing a good cuppa coffee can help to cool you down!

Very very rude and bad service! So disorganised and staff (especially lady boss) uses a high level of sarcasm very loudly to embarrass customers despite of her own unclear instructions. Coffee was average. Definitely not worth the visit! 1 star because I don't have a choice to go any lower.

If you are seeking a different coffee house experience or just a high quality well prepared cup of coffee, Kurasu is one to enjoy. A combination of textures - stone, wood, greenery, fabric - in a Japanese zen inspired interior is both a welcoming and a calming space. On the large counter dominating the room are a number of coffee gadgets to make coffee in a number of methods. Half a dozen choices of beans, origins, washes, and tasting notes are on the counter. I tried the Ethiopian origin natural wash after a discussion with the knowledgeable barista. It was a surprising medium roast, very smooth initially with a delicate apricot sweetness but after swallowing, leaves a very light acidity flavor further back on your tongue. Easy and pleasant to drink. They offer a few cake sweet bites, sized to be just a bite alongside your coffee rather than dessert. I tried cinnamon roll, a neutral cake consistency versus a yeast flavor. Handsome and friendly staff add to the experience.

Packed seating and crowded on a Saturday afternoon. Was given counter seats and watched many cuppas being made. Knowledgeable staff who is ready to explain the types of tea and coffee. Zen ambiance but can get quite noisy at times. 60-min dining limit. Only scones were displayed today.

Possibly the best filter coffee I’ve had in Singapore. There were 3 bean options (2 were sold out) for the filter with good tasting notes and recommendations. Super friendly staff, serious about their coffee and a cool, Japanese minimalist design. I visited on a Sunday morning around 11am, a very good crowd at the shop.

Was at Kurasu for some coffee with a friend and we were seated near the window, with no table to place our belongings and drinks. We were relatively close to the staff moving in and out of the counter. So when we saw someone vacating their table, we shifted over. We were then told that this spot can accommodate 3 other customers and was promised that when there are better seats available, she will let us know. We understand that they need the space to cater to other customers. Hence we shifted back to our original spot. After like half an hour and despite many empty tables in the shop, with zero queue outside, she never got back to us. One star for the unfulfilled promise. Coffee wise, it was nothing to rave about. Another coffee place nearby - Mellower has great coffee and food plus the environment is not too bad. Kurasu, not recommended. No thanks.

A chic and cosy place to chill on an afternoon. Interesting wall with various coffee paraphernalia, which will make a great backdrop for photos. What really attracted us in was the aroma of coffee from the secluded lane. The coffee was fragrant and not overly bitter, balanced taste indeed. Definitely worth repeated visits for the Japanese minimalist vibes.

Delicious coffee & professional service – this is what Kurasu Singapore offers. Nestled in 261 Waterloo Street at unit #01-24, Kurasu Singapore is a hidden gem, serving specialty-grade coffee sourced from coffee farms worldwide & roasted in Kyoto. This is a place for coffee lovers, with coffees brewed specifically for Hand Drip, Espresso & Cold Brew. Non-coffee drinkers will also be delighted, as the cafe serves Tea Lattes (Matcha & Hojicha) & Hot/Iced Chocolate. The food menu at Kurasu is made up of seasonal bakes & pastries, namely an assortment of Swiss Rolls from The Plain Jane & Sea salt Chocolate Chip Cookies from Wabi. Service is friendly & professional – the baristas were more than happy to explain and help with navigation of the vast coffee menu. Do note that seats are limited due to COVID-19 Safe Distancing Measures. This is not an issue for me, as safety should be a top priority. All in all, Kurasu Singapore is a space for experiencing an amazing cup of coffee served by a dedicated service crew. Coffee fans & adventurous ones will not be disappointed!

Great coffee and a good range of manual brewing equipment but service could be a little better for a specialty coffee cafe. No explanation of coffees, didn't ask about what I preferred to drink, etc. Single origin not available for milk coffees.

Was a bit difficult to find the cafe. I was walking in circles around the compound following the unit number but I can't find the shop. The easiest way to find is from the main road spot the "artsplace" sign and then follow the shelter on the left and you can see it next to the lift. Went on a Saturday afternoon and it was crazy. Inside was crowded and noisy and there were people queuing outside to get in. The interior was also quite minimalistic as they only had seats and don't really have tables but like small long stools for customers to put their drinks. Crowd management wasn't very good, they had a small menu at the counter so people tried to crowd around and the staff are asking people not to stand and block the way. Those people doing takeaway were asked to stand elsewhere except near the counter but everywhere was people and chairs. Since I wasn't a coffee drinker there was limited selection of drinks. Decided to go with the standard green tea latte. Drinks wise not very cheap and the portion was also not very big. Drink was pretty decent but there was a lack of food in the cafe. Seemed like there was this item which looks like a butter pound cake and that was it. Not sure if other days there would be a much better selection. I guess probably they also didn't want people to linger too long in the cafe. Guess if they serve food it would also be a challenge to eat without tables or food placed on low stools. Not sure if I would be back again, but maybe it's really a coffee heaven for the coffee drinkers.

Visited on a warm weekday, heard a lot about this place. The vibe of the cafe is quiet, calm and cosy, but limited seating, so got a takeaway. The coffee wasn’t the best I’ve had, and was quite expensive for the size of the drink.

the hand drip coffee was enjoyable, but the iced matcha was a tad too sweet for our liking, tasted like an ice cream drink. the cafe was very crowded on a weekend afternoon, but we managed to get seats within a few minutes of waiting. the staff were cheerful and polite, despite how busy they were! :)

came here for coffee after lunch on a weekend! we were lucky enough to get a seat as we entered, but those who came after has to wait - the place was pretty packed. cafe has a open concept, with small tables scattered around. they offer a wide variety of coffee blends. I had an iced latte made with their house blend (dark roast). rich, full bodied and non-sour, which checked all the boxes for me. I loved it so much, I had to buy a bag of beans home! they also helped to grind the beans according to my preference and I left with a freshly sealed bag. really pleasant experience overall 😊

If you’re a coffee lover and explorer, this place is a must ! There’re wide ranges of coffee beans you can choose. I had house blend ice latte with sea-salt chocolate cookie, they were incredibly awesome ! The shop is very friendly for you to relax with your book, meet your friend, or even work. Impressive !

Minimalistic. Interesting location. This is really the kind of coffee shop that I can try to get a good coffee from (just like Glyph and Nylon). The other cafes have too many distractions like brunch menu. Kurasu’s menu is very simple: few typical espresso based coffee and they put more emphasis on filter coffee selections. Staffs are nice and friendly, and kinda made me feel like I’m in Japan. The soft cookie that we tried is really good!

Good cup of coffee and well roasted beans. But the rude service did not sit well with me. It is very understandable that the cafe needs a decent revenue per customer to survive in Singapore everyone can understand that. But to be demanding and have a bad attitude about it is not acceptable. Hoping the service staff can try their best to not portray a mercenary attitude when all the customer wants is to enjoy a good cup of coffee on a weekend.

There is a need for social distancing hence there are fewer seats. You need to better manage your seating system. Your sign in front of the shop says "please wait to be seated" but you allow people to walk in to chope seats. End up the people who queued to order food find that there are no seats left despite your signage. And your staff got defensive and angry when questioned about the system. Disappointing experience.

Friendly vibes and they take time to explain the beans if you ask. Good flat white and now the popular Swiss Roll from Cafe Plain Jane is available as part of the seasonal menu. CDC vouchers are redeemable here. Batch brew of filtered coffee is good value.

I ordered batch brew. I was told they ran out after I paid. They offered “large black” Which is so generic and I expected different filtered coffee. Got an espresso diluted by bunch of water = very bad. I didn’t touch it beside first sip, nobody cared, nobody asked, nobody said “bye” when I was leaving. The interior is nice. But not worth another visit.

Service is good and the lemon pound cake is definitely delectable. A brilliant stop for a mid morning drink and bite. The matcha used is unfortunately very mild and easily overpowered by the oat milk, not a testament of the establishment just the tea producer. Will probably come back to try others or if nothing else, lemon cake!

Coffee was aromatic and there was a wide selection to choose from. On weekends, there was a 60min dining limit. Ambience wise, it was quite noisy- wouldn’t recommend it for a catch up with friends or to chill on a weekend afternoon

The shop is rather hidden under an old HDB complex but it is a good spot to chill down and enjoy a cuppa in the midst of hectic day! When it comes to the coffee, their iced white tasted pretty well balanced, although my personal preference is more towards something more intense - will consider to add more shot for my next visit.

Met up with some friends for drinks here and was very pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting Kampong Glam to have any bars -- this is the Muslim quarter after all! -- much less a funky bar like this that looks like it's been transported straight out of Melbourne or Berlin.

One of my weekend highlights - going here for a chill place with good coffee. The place gives me a zen vibe that's always appreciated in the midst of Singapore's hustle and bustling lifestyle. Intriguing place for a coffee catch up Visited Kurasu with LGF and was pleasantly surprised with the interior of the place. The cafe is housed within a co-working space and the decor is simple and spacious. The sofa was very comfortable which is a big plus as cafes in Singapore aren’t known for comfy seats. The coffee was nice but not great. Banana cake was nice too. Definitely a good place to catch up especially on a hot day or a crazy wet day like the day we visited.

Went here for a morning coffee after first arriving in Singapore. Angelo the barista was a delight. He was so friendly, helpful and good to talk too. I tasted a couple of single origin pour overs. They were delicious. The place itself isn't a typical coffee shop environment, as it is part of a work space. However, it was still a lovely way to spend a morning, the highlight being the very affable barista Angelo. I would definitely go here again if I was in the area.

This is a place for high quality coffee rather than a cafe to visit per se. Expect a large range of handmade pour over coffees that are well made by the friendly staff. Definitely a hidden spot in Singapore. Needs a slightly more efficient system for ordering/seating etc. and a few more chairs.

It's cafe that seems like it's only for people in the know. A bit hard to find and but they do make good joes. Be prepared to wait a bit if there's only 1 staff cause he or she is the server, cashier and barista extraordinaire all in one. I had the light espresso blend while the wife had the matcha latte. Excellent stuff. They sell a lot of coffee paraphernalia as well.

Very nice and professional barista! I’m a big fan of pour over coffee and have tried many in SG, and I would say the filter coffee from Kurasu is amazing, you can clearly feel the change of coffee flavor as temperature descent, must try!

Loveee the coffee here! Super smooth. The matcha latte was very sweet. Don't think they added sugar, could be the type of powder used. I have a sweet tooth but even I found it to be too sweet. Good service, they also serve Plain Jane Swiss rolls here if you're a fan.

A simple place for dripped coffee, style like Japan cafe. Offer varieties of coffee bean ideal for coffee lovers. The skill of dripping are considered good but not the best. Tends to add more water, but the temperature is well captured.

Finally a standalone outlet for Kurasu Singapore, which has been around for almost 3 years. Absolutely loving the space and certainly brought out the Kyoto vibe. Coffee is great as always and definitely a must go for people who appreciate good coffee.

  • 1/5 Terry P. 3 years ago on Google
People tend to neglect first impressions and my experience at Kurasu was no exception. A simple question of "what would you recommend" had us stumped with the most unnecessary response which seems to only ridicule its own menu. If the cafe does not believe in making their own specialties, then what identity does it stand for? Anyway, we went ahead with an Iced Hojicha Latte ($7) and it was indeed normal. Let's just say that if the barista does not serve with sincerity, nothing will ever taste right. So should anyone need to find a place to make yourself feel better, this is not where you want to be.

Went on a weekend. Was greeted by the only staff, the Barista. Ordered Matcha Latte and Hojicha Latte, both were good. Ambience is wonderful. The rude lady staff was not present on this day. Maybe that's why the visit was lovely. The Barista present presented good customer service.

Coffee is really good. No frills coffee specialist place, uncommon in Singapore. The guy behind the counter patiently explained the menu to me. Can see why people may be offended by the service and tone of voice. But sometimes when restaurants/ cafe are good at what they do, one can't help but return and just get used to the rough edges.

I ordered the sea salt choc chip cookie which was ok, nothing to shout about. My friend said her coffee was nice and smooth. Since she is an avid coffee drinker, giving the 4 stars for that. There is a one-order-per-pax policy, so something to note if going in a group. The shop is at a rather difficult to find corner of Waterloo Centre because of the construction beside it that hides it from view. Appreciated that there were some sofa seats with backing available.

It seems like most of the 1-star rating reviews here are due to the negative customer service that people had experienced when patronizing this cafe. Need I say more? The only thing is that I wish I could rate it 0.5 stars or less, cause this place does not even deserve a star.

A couple of months ago, i was hospitalised for 34 days due to an inflamed knee which required Surgery, and after being admitted in hospital for such a prolinged period of time, and was approaching my birthday, my young daughter wanted to get a piece of brownie to celebrate my birthday. Yet she was told that they ran out brownie, and the lady staff made a very nice and warming gesture by gifting my daughter with a piece of FOc muffin to be given to me to celebrate my birthday. We shared the delicious muffin that day, and today after attaining some form of mobility i made my way to thank the staff at the branch and have our breakfast T2 x 02 sets with nice tuna, mushroom and chicken puff. Many thanks to Kopi & Staff.

Had a great time with my partner at this hideaway cafe at Waterloo St. It is a sleek cafe decked in Modern Japanese design, with lots of open seating to amplify the space. The design also relates to the drinks it sells, there’s coffee and Japanese tea (matcha and houjicha) and also some pastries too. I ordered a long black and my partner a houjicha latte. Both were great, I liked how my coffee had a nice balance, just a bit of acidity and no stringent after taste. The latte kept the houjicha taste, not super milky and refreshing to drink on a hot day. I liked the banana bread and chocolate cookie too. The bread was moist with a rich banana flavour and the cookie was slightly salted with the choc slightly melted (they heat the pastries before serving). Such a nice complement to the drinks. If you are ard the Waterloo street area (aka SMU or art museum) do drop by to have a cuppa!

In terms of mood and atmosphere I really love it! The employees are friendly and the customer-barista shared bar make the staff very approachable! There aren’t any charging outlets or wifi so it’s not the most conducive for doing work. I would love to sit, chill and catch up with friends there but sadly, the very aesthetic seats aren’t really the most comfortable (but very pretty!) Overall the coffee and matcha is not bad! They offer a lot of non-diary options and the pastries are good as well. The one star I didn’t give is due to the price of their items which are a little higher than norm and the not ultra comfy seating but other than that all my boxes are ticked!

I was very excited when I first heard Kurasu was opening a coffee stand in Singapore, and swung by Odeon once they did. Their Kyoto and Bangkok branches were beautiful spaces and I was excited about how their store at waterloo would be. Was not disappointed as it really catches all the minimalist vibes from the functional, built in fabric sofas, to brewing at the island counter. The view should improve greatly after construction is done. But for now the white walls aren’t too offensive. Service could be slightly improved in terms of attentiveness. Which isnt too important (you’re here for the coffee and vibes!) Though, I did not vibe with the barista who wryly (and slightly condescendingly) asked me “this is a dark roast, is that ok?” when I ordered the house brand dark, specifically saying the word dark. Perhaps it was profiling because I initially wanted to try their batch brew and perhaps that somehow labelled me as a lesser drinker? (Batch brew wasnt available because...come to think of it he didn’t say clearly but ok). It should be fine if you’re a coffee connoisseur, just show that off and you’ll probably have a good detailed conversation. If you’re not and jjst want some good coffee in nice vines, well you’ll get that, buy just let any condescension flow past you, its mostly worth it. Prices are as expected. Still 5 stars because Kurasu roasts excellent coffee. They also curate beautiful coffee wares that you could buy online. If you’re the sort that needs to touch and see before buying, they’re all on display here 👍🏻

A slice of Japan quietly tucked away under a hdb block, Kurasu is one of the most tranquil cafe in Singapore especially on a weekday. Love the minimalist interior and simplicity. Protip: Visit on weekdays or before lunch on weekends to avoid crowds #gentlereviews #cafelistco #cafelistsg #cafelist #cafesg #sgcafes

Enjoyed the coffee at Kurasu! Had the house blend for the white coffee and it was well balanced, smooth and not acidic - tasted the slight nutty notes (sadly couldn’t taste the fruity note)! The matcha latte is quite a hit (everyone ordered a cup or the Hojicha latte) and my friend really enjoyed the Matcha latte - was smooth, not overly sweet and had a very faint taste of bitterness (perfect cup)! Looking forward to the next visit!

It's cozy in here. Fashioned and furnished in white and shades of grey dotted with wooden chairs and tables. However, it's both the service and quality of coffee served that truly stand out. Espresso and Pourover alike are treated with extreme care and love. And one can taste it in the cup. When the cafe isn't too busy, the baristas are willing to chat about specialty coffee, maybe even brew a bean that has been gifted. Although one gripe I do have is the fact their bags of roasted coffee are not the freshest. It is understandable as all the coffee is still roasted in Kyoto and shipped here. Nonetheless, it still would be nice to pick up a bag that has been roasted just a week ago.

People rave a lot about their matcha espresso and their lattes but I have to say I’ve been to Kurasu numerous times and they have been one of the most consistent coffee brewers in Singapore. I’ve never been disappointed in their filter coffee, except for once when I ordered a Rwandan coffee, even though I never liked it because I thought maybe Kurasu could change my mind. They couldn’t but all is well. This is definitely one of the places to go to learn more about pour overs.

Hidden little speciality coffee gem. Kurasu is Japanese coffee shop using beans roasted in Kyoto. It’s mainly focused on filter coffees with a wide selection of beans. But that is not to say that the cappuccinos and other coffee beverages are not served to perfection. Excellent barista skills, nice and modern minimalistic atmosphere.

Prolly doing injustice to the photos but that’s the best I can managed given a tight spot in a crowded cafe. We ordered a pour over coffee, ice white, dirty matcha and ice black - all consumed in record time because we don’t like the idea of loitering around with one cup of drink. Quick observation: Coffee was not acidic, good medium roast that’s nutty and flora with a caramel finish with vanilla rounding it. The matcha with espresso was a bit more complex because the sugar killed the flavour. Was trying to see how the bitter matcha wrestle with the espresso - though visually when stirring it, we could almost feel the complex taste. I would have preferred a lighter touch on the sugar. Didn’t have a chance to taste the rest but we must make it a point to come back.

Kurasu is popular for its variety of coffee options. There was a lack of tea options. The matcha latte was decent. But the coffee is the one to go for. The queue may progress slowly (as in my case) since Kurasu provides a good atmosphere to hang and chill in. Be prepared to wait if the queue is long. There is also a lack of food options on offer. Only cookies were available when I visited.

The place may be slightly difficult to find if you're not familiar with the area. Nice ambience, but it may get a little noisy on a crowded day. Staff was very helpful in getting us seats. On a sidenote, coffee from japan is usually light roasts, so if you prefer dark roast... this may not be for you.

The cafe is located at the first floor of the Blk 261 Waterloo Street building. The cafe has a calm and chill vibes with quite a lot of seating areas. They also sell a lot of coffee brewing equipment, such as for making filter coffees. The hand brew coffee using the Brazil beans was good. The flavor was well balanced. Do expect some wait during the afternoon weekends before your coffee is served.
