Probably the hype has died down, first few times walking past it was always packed with long queue outside. Happened to be there just on a Sunday afternoon and then it was so quiet with so many empty tables, could just walk in and pick almost anywhere I wanted to sit. This place is so retro and nostalgic, everything still looks quite original to back in the 70s or 80s (except for the curry puff stall). Food here is so cheap and good, ordered a set and was less than $4. I don't understand why the egg yolk here tastes so good compared to elsewhere and did they make their own butter? It's so good that I could probably finish the whole slab. Time just seemed to have stopped in this coffeeshop, it's a very nice place to sit and enjoy tea when it's quiet (can be a bit warm though). And talking about the curry puffs, this place sells curry puffs out of the world as well. There are so many people waiting for the curry puffs and the skin is so thin and crispy! Doesn't hurt to order some to enjoy with the bread and eggs.

If you want to travel back in time then go to this place. Very retro style. Not many people on a Sunday morning which was a bit surprising considering the amount of reviews. Everything in the pictures was 4.20. The coffee tastes good with a dash of butter and some condensed milk. The staff is very old school and be prepared to shout your order to them. The toast is good with a generous layer of butter and a bit of Kaya jam. The eggs are good too. I'd say it's worth going if you live nearby but might not be worth it to actually travel across town to get here.

Old-school nostalgic kopi shop near Lavender MRT. With so many 'hipster' cafes sprouting up, this is a good change in scenery and takes you back to times when things seemed a lot more simpler. Shop is run by a father-son duo and has been running for almost 50 years now. The father apparently boarded a ship from China to Singapore when he was a young boy. The tables are old and creaky, service takes its own sweet time, fans make more noise than giving out air. However, there's a relaxing calm to all of this. We ordered the famous butter coffee and the kaya set. I loved the coffee - it was strong and the butter just added a whole new dimension to the coffee. Kaya was fresh, eggs were soft and fluffy. Loved the whole experience!

Coffee butter was the reasons of my visit, a little off at first since i’m not used to the oily texture, but that’s was okay overall. Toast was good. I can see why this place can last this long. Tourist should know that locals have their breakfast from 8.30 am (on average). This place is not that big so it can easily be packed. Prepare for a long queue since there are only three people serving for all the customer.

my spouse said this is one of legend Kopitiam in Singapore. I had breakfast late, so no need to Q. traditional Kaya Toast, but the taste is average, bread isn't crispy than other shop. Also the butter is less. but I love the butter coffee. The price is inexpensive. I also tried Potato Curry Puff. You order inside at the uncle's counter and he'll just give you the food and drinks at the counter as well.

Coming here is like stepping into a coffee shop out of Rita Chao and Sakura Teng’s time — the 60s and 70s, the swinging a-go-go era. Except that this coffee shop — Heap Seng Leong at Blk 10 North Bridge Rd — is in need of a good spring cleaning. Here your bread will be toasted on an old charcoal ‘stove’ and you can ask for coffee with a slice of butter added to it. You can’t have these in our modern day coffee shops. Half-boiled eggs are perfectly made and you can dip your bread with kaya and slices of refrigerated butter in it to eat. The younger of the two elderly uncles running the business told me they have been doing it for over 40 years; that means since the 70s. They may well be the only ones still using charcoal to toast their bread and keep their coffee n tea warm. Don’t expect a hipster joint in a 60s coffee shop decor. It is NOT. You may not like the untidiness of the place. But for me who identifies with the working class, I feel at home here. I can imagine coming here for my comfort food when I’m feeling pensive, melancholic or in a contemplative or nostalgic mood. Warning: Avoid the weekends. Go on a weekday during office hours when it’s quieter n you’ll more likely get a table.

One of the very few places now where you can find coffee or tea with butter, which gives it creaminess without being overly sweet. Do try their toasted bread, which is toasted over a charcoal fire. It is soft and delicious. The stall is helmed by the very eldery but spry old man. There is a Malay stall as well, which serves tasty epok epok. Usual filling is curry potato, though they do have sardine ones on weekends. They are made fresh, and you can see them stretching out the pastry on the machine. At $1 each, these are worth getting.

A must go for me when in the vicinity- it has an old school charm that attracts. It may look slightly dim, but it doesn’t feel dirty. Food and drinks are consistent- I actually like how he doesn’t rush through the orders! Cut the old man some slack- most of the time he’s a 1 man show from toasting bread, making the delicious coffee, cleaning up and collecting money! Note: Curry puffs only available after 10am!

An old-school breakfast spot in Singapore; first opened in 1974 and it looks like it’s been stuck in a time warp there. Be prepared to wait a bit, there always seems to be a line, even in mid-morning. Their specialty is the Kopi Gu You or coffee with butter. You gotta try it; the butter gives it a nice savory juxtaposition to the bitter coffee. The kaya & butter toast was done on a charcoal grill, making it aromatic and smoky. Another highlight here; they serve the soft-boiled eggs already cracked open and ready to eat. No need to struggle with the hot eggs! To say the place is ‘retro’ is an understatement. You just need to have a look around the place and be awash with nostalgia. A cool period piece amid the modern city. PS: Don't forget to try the Curry Puff stall next door! Also recommended!

This is a must try place. The kaya butter toast is the best I've tasted so far. Half boiled eggs cooked to perfection. Local coffee, just average. A one man show stall. Come after lunch. CHEAP!!! $3.90 for coffee, kaya butter toast and 2 half boiled eggs.

A busy morning in this old kopitiam made me realize this place’s legendary. A simple breakfast menu with affordable price around 1-1,4 SGD. Combination of breads, eggs, coffee, in the morning, perfect! I ordered Kopi C Peng, kaya butter toast, and steam bread with no eggs. It was super traditional with just three oldman serving the drink, toast/steam the bread, clean everything. Better to come before 8AM or you have no seat left because it will be super packed with long queue There was also curry puff stall inside the shop, and you can have freshly made curry puff with just 1 dollar and the taste was amazing too Definitely will come back if I got the chance to visit Singapore again!

The place serve very traditional coffee and breakfast set. It is a really old school shop with super old setting. Such places don't exist much in Singapore. Still run by an old man. Support while they are still around. Good to go for the experience and the bread and eggs are great too!

Heap Seng Leong: A Timeless Taste of Tradition Heap Seng Leong is more than just a coffee shop; it's a portal to a simpler time. Stepping into this unassuming space is like stepping back into the Singapore of the 1970s, with its marble-topped tables, red plastic chairs, and walls adorned with decades of coffee-making memories. The air is thick with the intoxicating aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the rhythmic clinking of spoons against porcelain cups. But the true stars of the show are, without a doubt, the Kopi Butter and the Charcoal Kaya Butter Toast. (+bonus dish at the end!) Kopi Butter: A Silky Symphony of Coffee and Butter The Kopi Butter, also known as "butter coffee," is a testament to Heap Seng Leong's dedication to preserving tradition. Each cup is meticulously brewed using the iconic "kopi sock" method, resulting in a robust and flavorful brew. But the magic truly happens with the addition of a generous pat of butter. As it melts into the hot coffee, it creates a velvety mouthfeel, tempering the bitterness and adding a touch of luxurious creaminess. Each sip is a smooth symphony of coffee, butter, and pure nostalgia. Charcoal Kaya Butter Toast: A Toasty Revelation No visit to Heap Seng Leong is complete without indulging in their legendary Charcoal Kaya Butter Toast. Thick slices of Hainanese white bread are toasted to golden perfection over glowing charcoal embers. This time-honored method infuses the bread with a subtle smoky aroma and a delightful hint of char. Each slice is then slathered with a homemade kaya spread, crafted from a delicate blend of eggs, coconut milk, pandan leaves, and sugar. The kaya's sweetness dances with the smoky char, creating a flavor profile that is both familiar and surprisingly complex. Finally, two cold slabs of butter adorn the toast, adding a delightful richness that melts in your mouth with every bite. A Timeless Treasure The Kopi Butter and Charcoal Kaya Butter Toast from Heap Seng Leong are more than just breakfast; they are an experience. Each bite is a testament to the kopitiam's dedication to authenticity and quality. The combination of robust coffee, smoky toast, and creamy kaya is pure magic, transporting you back to a time of simpler pleasures and genuine warmth. So, if you're looking for a taste of Singapore's heritage, look no further than Heap Seng Leong. Just be prepared to fall in love with every sip and every bite. Bonus Tip : Do not forget to try the potato curry puff from the mini stall just to the left of within Heap Seng Leong! It is priced at $1 each and trust me when I say it will be the most amazing potato curry puff you will ever lay your taste buds on. The skin is super crispy and stays in 1 piece, without crumbling like the usual flaky curry puff you get outside. The potato filling hits you with it's crazy flavour profile that screams "CURRY!!!!!!". Spiciness level was very balanced for a non extreme spicy eater like me. Additional Information: Heap Seng Leong is located at 10 North Bridge Rd, #01-5109, Singapore 190010. Opening hours are 5:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily. The Kopi Butter, Soft Boiled Eggs and Charcoal Kaya Butter Toast are priced at ~S$4.50.

The coffee shop retains the traditional style kaya toast with the bread being toasted in charcoal. The shop is patronized by many customers. Coffee and tea are good. There is also a small Malay shop that sells hand-made curry puff. Come here if you want to create a nostalgic experience.

Nostalgic place for an old style coffee place. The toast are charcoal grilled and traditional old coffee brings back childhood memories. In the same shop, there is a Malay store selling old style epok epok (curry puff). The pastry n potato totally yummy. Do visit if you are around the area.

This place became our daily breakfast spot when visiting Singapore. Best part is it opens super early so even on those early mornings when I couldn’t sleep going here was convenient. They have the best Kaya toast and stuffed curry potatoes puffs which went really well with the condensed milk hot coffee and tea. Best part is it’s filling and really damn cheap, making It a perfect budget friendly spot. There is a bit of a language barrier but not impossible to communicate. I would highly suggest getting the grab app as it makes paying for food and communication simpler. A great way to start the morning. 1000% recommended - I would go to Singapore just for here alone.

The place is easy to find. Various FnB for breakfast, you have to try kaya butter toast and coffee butter. The toast is very soft, dip in the coffee butter and it’ll melt on your mouth. One of popular place for breakfast in Singapore. You have to come in breakfast time, during 6 - 8 am to feel like Singaporean.

This is the first time to try this local breakfast place which was highly recommended by my friend. This place has old-school vintage vibe and the way they make the toasts are authentic ancient way which you may not able to see it anywhere else. I like the toasts fillings (butter and kaya), the kaya is unlike the yellow kaya which is very different from what I used to have in other places. It’s not very sweet yet it compliments the butter saltiness in it. The toasts are relatively soft not crispy type. I could taste the history of this place and the char flavour on the toast is really unique. One thing I still cannot get used to it was having the running eggs and drink it like local people. Other than that I like the experience of trying local food. I’ve also tried the Lasi Lemak which I probably never had it for ages. It is very flavourful however I am still not used to the dryness of the dish and there’s no vegetables in it. It’s highly recommended to who want to try authentic local food and it’s very economical’ It can get really busy even on the raining days so get there early!

We went on a Saturday at around 2pm and queued for around 1h 20mins before we got our hands on the breakfast set. The whole shop was served by two uncles who prepared the set traditionally via charcoal stove. The coffee was uniquely mixed with butter. Deeply admired the hard work of the 2 elderly uncles.

An old-school coffeeshop going back to 1974. While they are known for their Kopi Gu You, we ordered Yuan Yang, Kopi O Siu Dai and Kaya Toast. The service and vibe here is a quite laid-back. The Kaya Toast is pretty good with a generous slab of butter. The Kopi Siu Dai is fine too. 2x Kaya Toast and the 2 drinks cost about 4.30 SGD. The coffeeshop has an old-school atmosphere and opens as early as 5 am, thus it is a great place to stop for some coffee or breakfast if you are out early in the morning for cycling early in the morning. The coffeeshop is quite popular and can get rather crowded during the weekends. A friend of mine noticed it has gotten more popular since the circuit breaker in 2020.

Lightly toasted over an open flame, really traditional tasting kaya with butter.. awesome beyond the modern ones by miles

Eggs, coffee and toast were average. Pigeons in the unit seemed really comfortable with humans around them. Place was a pretty warm and unclean. Very very dated. But HEY, this is EXACTLY what olden days coffee house was supposed to be. If you prefer modernised coffee houses, this is not for you.

Old school nostalgia vibes here, wasn’t full when we visited at 8am. First time trying coffee / tea with butter! Preferred the coffee which tasted extra fragrant with the butter. Very affordable priced breakfast sets that only cost $3.50 for 2 slices + 2 eggs + drink. Toast is thicker and more fluffy than crispy. Curry puff in the same venue is delicious and very cheap ($1 each). Stayed flaky and crispy after hours

Nostalgia at its finest. Food tastes amazing, my staple breakfast since childhood got elevated. In absolute awe that the owner is now at least 93 years old and still working hard at this coffeeshop! The son works alongside him, and both of them work like clockwork. Timing of the (perfect) soft-boiled eggs, drinks are all ingrained in their heads. AMAZING. They also serve the long lost coffee with butter.

Nearby parking lots. The place momentarily transports you back to the old days… The standard set priced at $3.90 comes with toasts, eggs and coffee. Toasts were the fluffy and not crispy type, good that they were not too sweet nor overly filled with butter. Egg yolks were more cooked that the usual runny type. Coffee was pretty standard to me, but kudos to them for not making it too sweet. Overall, worth to give it a try for the ambience and toasts.

The butter gives the coffee a smooth finish, adding a light fragrance. I like that the bread is thick (got bite when you bit into it) and BBQ over charcoal (nice crisp). The place will transport you to old Singapore. It is an interesting wall down memory lane.

Everything felt very nostalgic, the place, the ambience, the kaya butter toast and ice kopi peng. Not really a pleasant place to eat, but gives us a unique experience. Better come earlier in the morning if you'd like to enjoy your breakfast here, since it will get super packed after 8 or 9am. The uncles are cool, some of them seems not too friendly and sometimes scold us the customers, it might annoys some people but I personally found it funny, it gave me a "eating at my uncle's home" vibe, I even almost washed my own dishes 😂

I went here because of all the hype- and it definitely did live up to it. Upon entering we (bf and I) did kind of think we were in the wrong place because there were many other stalls also selling toast. We went during their off time so no experience any crowd or waiting for a table. The older gentleman working there seemed very nonchalant but no worries- I didn’t come for the service and I had already read many reviews warning about an unfriendly uncle. I just came up to him and ordered 1 Kaya toast and 1 butter coffee. He nodded and pointed at the tables for us to sit and wait at. Both were delivered shortly. The toast was so basic looking but oh so delicious, the warm coffee with a sliver of butter on top *heart eyes*. Boyfriend suggested we only get 1 of each to try together but he ended up eating more than his share. We walked up to him to pay afterwards and I forgot how much it was in SGD but definitely only a litter more than $1USD. As simple as Kaya toast and butter coffee seems, I was not able to find any similar in taste at two other spots I tried in the shopping malls. I told myself I would come back one last time before we departed SG but ended up not being able to due to time constraints- I still think about it til this day.

This place has been on my to try list for a while now and with the recent Ya Kun price increase, I have been looking for other kaya toast places. The toast set here costs only $4, with the lightly charcoal toasted bread, it's definitely one of the better kaya toasts I've had. The half boiled eggs were perfectly cooked as well, unlike some chains where it's overcooked.

First time in heap seng long and it was memorable. How they traditionally prepared the food made me feel home .. It’s the cutest little spot in the city with amazing traditional breakfast. I was doubting at first, but when i try the butter coffee it was perfect, the coffee wasnt to sweet, but it was creamy and you can taste a hint of a butter at the end. Kaya toast is perfect, their bread was thick and fluffy, kaya jam itself isnt too sweet but tasty, and the butter inside give a savory taste 💯💯and we will definitely be back again. They made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience. Just come earlier to avoid queues

Place of the legendary Kopi Gu You (coffee with butter)! I came here just to try this really old school and legendary local coffee with a slide of butter in it, know as "Kopi Gu You". It was a super long queue, and I waited in line for exactly 1 hour just to get 2 cups of coffee! LOL! But it was super worth the wait. Their coffee is very smooth and aromatic. I think they roast their own coffee beans instead of buying from factory. The Kopi Gu You was also very special - the aroma of the butter blended extremely well with the coffee. Perhaps next time I will try their butter toasts as well (saw a lot of other people ordering that). Re-visited on a Tuesday afternoon at 4pm - and there was no queue! Yeah! Clientele was also very different - just local residents, and mainly senior citizens who are regulars. Tried their butter toast this time. OMG it's so nostalgic! Old school bread with old school kaya (it's orange in colour, not green) and old school butter. I thought I had time travelled to 40 years ago LOL.

Tbh I feel it's overrated... Queued for 1+ hr on a Monday morning for 2 slices of non-crisp toast, 2 normal soft boiled eggs and a kopi gu you that tasted the same without the butter. Plus points given to very traditional interior and cheap pricing. Queue was slow because there are only 2 people working. Would definitely go elsewhere to satisfy kaya toast cravings.

Long wait of almost 1 hour plus but totally worth it. Their set meal consist of a drink, two eggs and two bread with Kaya and butter. Everything in the set is very good. Ordered the coffee with butter and tasted much better than expected. One of the best I will say. The bread is charcoal grilled which gives it a nice touch. Do note that the coffee and bread makers are of old age. So do understand the long wait.

The main attraction of the place is the retro vibe and the chill atmosphere. The butter coffee and "charcoal" toast are good but not mind-blowing. The Muslim food (nasi lemak and curry puff) were delicious. Prepare to que 30-40mins before going. If no que it will have a higher rating otherwise it worth trying.

4.5 rating Kopi, toast, eggs - Everything was just brills and hit the spot. You can’t find many of these old school joints with such good local coffee and charcoal grilled kaya-butter toast anymore. The wait is long but it’s worth waiting if you have time to spare and are fussy about your kopi. I truly hope the Uncle will pass this on to someone in the next generation just because it really is a gem.

One of the only few places left to have kopi gu yu (咖啡牛油 aka bullet coffee) which is excellent! Good quality butter is used so you will not have a greasy feel but instead makes the kopi smooth & creamy. They have steamed bread & charcoal toasted bread. They do not offer any set, just tell them what you want, ie number of pieces of bread, soft boiled eggs etc. Prices are what you will expect from such traditional kopitiam & definitely cheaper than some of the big-name chains around SG.

No frills old Coffeshop but the toast bread, eggs and coffee/tea with butter is a must! Some patience though as its a rather small place and may hv to wait awhile for a table and for the table to be cleared. But they are 'updated' with Grab Pay available 😜

This place is a time capsule! Stepping into the coffeeshop reminded me of the time when my grandpa - that old school coffeeshop setup, the thick aroma from the coffee with butter in it, and the wisps of grilled kaya butter toast! Watching uncle prepare all these with passion told me that this coffee shop kept him going even at an old age. Come enjoy your coffee, don’t rush, soak in the nostalgia!

Worth trying if u are not particular with ambience and hygiene. I Came here specially to try their traditional breakfast , buttered coffee and milk tea. The milk tea is $1. The buttered coffee is $1.20. ( quite flavourful) . Charcoal Toasted Bread is $1.60. 2Eggs for $1 . Breakfast set consists of regular hot drink + 2 half-boiled eggs + kaya buttered toast =$3.60 . Relatively reasonable-cheaper than ordering from Hdb kopitiam. If u have kids with u or u prefer non caffeinated drink- u can order iced drinks ( can drinks) or hot Milo or ice Milo. Managed by 2 uncles- friendly and wanted to served my order to my table—but I turned down his offer-so he can prepare the other food/drinks orders faster. The Malay food stall sells nasi lemak ( I did not try-was too full from the breakfast) , potato puff$1 ( no egg no chicken - dun mix up with chicken curry puff) & sardine puff$1.20 - average .

Trip down memory lane. A coffeeshop that looks like it's been stuck in time. Still using old fashioned charcoal to toast bread and one gets a thin slab of butter with the toast. A tea with 2 slices of toasted bread (butter & Kaya) costs $2.20.

First time trying the butter Coffee - kopi guyu. I admit it was nice, just not enough butter! It did add a nice layer of smoothness and I think you might eat a whole block if you did not stop putting in butter yourself. The coffee itself was also nice enough. Maybe could be a bit thicker in taste. The bread was really nice since it's charcoal grilled! There is an added depth of flavour compared to normal toast. It was thick but soft. Usually I would prefer the thin sliced kind but it's quite good. I am giving it 4 stars because I don't see this butter coffee around.

Kopi Si Kosong ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Kaya Butter Toast ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Eggs⭐⭐⭐⭐ Curry Puff ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Its hard to really rate the food here as there are many many places with very good similar items elsewhere too. I'm rating it according to the nostagic taste of what i had been eating since young. The food is as close as it can get to the olden days. I can only say the food appeals to me and i love it. The curry puff is very nice when hot, and on certain days, very rare, the puff crusts is slightly hard. The nasi, i think can give it a miss. These malay food is from the malay stall in the coffee shop.

This is not the place to go for a coffee connoisseur, or a fussy eater. I waited in line for an hour while my clothes soaked up the charcoal smell. I then got my butter coffee with sugar although I asked for no sugar. I was done with the mediocre coffee and eggs in a few minutes. But it was more than worth it, if you frame it as being not a coffee shop but a museum with a room that takes you back half a century.

Old school kopitiam that uses abacus and charcoal heating for coffee and kaya in a can. See many basic couples here. Guyu (butter) in toast and kopi, confirm heart attack. The butter melts in the toast. Can see the uncle scrapping the charred bits of toast old school method. There is a malay store that sells curry puffs at the store front. Support local.

Finally got the opportunity to seat down and enjoy the famous kopi with butter after a couple of visits. Usually the queue is too long or I decided to walk away as the wait is really too long since the serving is very slow. Ordered a kopi and a kopi-o with butter (old uncle says have to let them know in advance as default is without), two eggs and 2 slices of bread with kaya/butter. Cost $4.30 in total which is very reasonable, as most places a kopi bread set will be around $4-$5. The coffee is smooth and nice with the butter, though a little too thick for me which some people may like thick coffee. The toast bread is alright as it is served relatively cold after the bread has been toasted for quite a while ago. The half boiled eggs are good and perfect. The malay stall within the coffee shop serves great curry puffs. $1 for the potatoes fillings and $1.20 for the sardines fillings. Nasi lemak is nice too for $3 per pack. The nasi pack also comes with ayam which costs $4 with different ingredients.

  • 1/5 Tien G. 3 years ago on Google
The food and coffee taste alright. Nothing fantastic. However the hygiene standard is a turn off big time. Every plate of bread came with a dented fingerprint on it. The uncle doing it is not wearing gloves. Cracking the eggs right beside washing basin when the other guy is washing cups. So I don’t think coming here specially is a wise choice considering the long Q on weekends. Go to YK, Killiney or Toastbox is anytime better. Review based on my personal POV, maybe I have OCD.

  • 1/5 Esther N. 3 years ago on Google
Never ever come here on a weekend. The queue does not move because the people making the food are very slow and usually there would be a large group of people ordering a mountain of toasts which the elderly grandpa in the stall would make one by one. All tables will be taken and you will have to stand in a queue. I was here at 12.15pm on a Sunday (bad idea) and now after 45minutes I am still standing in the queue with still a bunch of people in front of me. It is disheartening and ridiculous.

Went on Saturday morning around 10am. Really long and slow moving queue. Difficult to get a table with this crowd, see many youngsters and families, and a big table was occupied by 2 guys talking business. Didn't get to see the old uncle. Ordered coffee and toast, it was worth the wait. Butter is not added to your coffee by default, need to inform them to add (+20¢). Coffee and toast is nice. Ordered curry puffs and nasi lemak from the Malay store, they taste great too.

Although the the coffee’s taste & strength varies sometimes - it’s really cool to sit down and take down the waft of charcoal, sound and people. It was a raining start of 2021 that we decided to have a go at the social media famous butter coffee. It was situation in the old estate and with limited seats and you will need to queue to buy the coffee or bread. The carpark is just right in the neighbourhood so very convenient. It was more of a 1 man show so the queue is often long. After getting my bread toast, Kopi Gao, Kopi with Butter and Ice Kopi I was eager to have a go and taste of the famous butter Kopi but I was disappointed by the light taste of coffee. It did not bring out the fragrance of coffee. The Kopi Gao is suppose to be thick but still far from the norm taste and the Ice Kopi is also light in coffee taste. The bread toast is ok. The place gives you the 1960 to 1970 nostalgic feeling and I would recommend those that wants to take photo of this old shop to go ahead and forget about the coffee taste.

It is a very retro place that the young people love to come to experience what coffeeshops in Singapore were in the 70s and earlier. The older ones love to sit in the very environment that they were used to. For many it would include, like for me, a kopi-guyu (butter in the coffee which in the western world is called "bullet-proof coffee"? ) and the increasingly rare steamed bread with butter and kaya.

very old school.. very traditional.. very slow.. don't come when you're in a rush, head down only when you're prepared to chill. from waiting for a carpark lot, to waiting for a table, then waiting to give your order (repeatedly, as they tend to forget 😅), before finally waiting for your food & drinks.. it's an experience though, first time trying out butter kopi for us 😋

Friendly cosy traditional coffeehouse. Fully family run Unique butter kopi, nice charcoal grilled toast. Love the kaya toast, chargrilled outside, fluffy inside with traditional homemade like kaya and a slice of delicious butter. They can perhaps be more organised with a proper ordering chit and order processing system BUT maybe that's why the old school nostalgia lingers

Old school coffeeshop serving tea, coffee, kaya butter toasted bread and soft boiled egg. Good place for having simple snack during the day. Their food and drinks are cooked over a charcoal stove like what it used to be in the past which is not common among the modern coffeeshop. Ambience give a sense of the 70s-80s era. Good to visit if you enjoy simple Hainanese coffee & bread or Simply to step into the past and relive that memories of your childhood days.

  • 5/5 KH C. 2 years ago on Google
Probably the most authentic charcoal grilled Kaya Toast and the most fragrant kopi, within an original coffeeshop setting. Time seems to be frozen here for the past 50 years. The only evidence of time is the old uncle’s hair, and his indifferent attitude which further enhance the nostalgia.

Food is good and authentic, however, the long queue is a bit too much for the overall experience. If it weren’t for my friend who insisted on trying authentic Asian breakfast, I would have deserted this place. Mind that beside and behind this place are also other pretty decent Asian Breakfast counters. Bit of tips: Ask for freshly hot fried Curry Pok! Best. Sit outside if possible.

This legendary place no need introduction again. You must try their kopi gu you (butter coffee), kaya toast, & boiled eggs (yes it’s 2 eggs on 1 portion). And don’t forget the $1 curry puff also. Don’t expect an aircon room like a cafe or mall foodcourt, but that’s what’s make this place feels nostalgic like the ol’ times.

Traditional Coffee Shop (Kopithiam). Need to Que up - LONG QUE and the ventilation / fan in the shop is not very good enough. was que up more then 30 minutes and started the sweat like after a bath and not even my que to order yet. Be PREPARE a small fan if you wanted to try out the kopithiam during the que. No nice decoration (typical old chinese coffee shop). The coffee with butter will rate at 2.5/5 - personally prefer thicker/richer kopi taste. The toast will rate at 2.5/5 - the kaya not so tasty (as had a better taste b4 in Malaysia). And the toast it soft not Crunchy even grilled. Half boil eggs rate at 2.5/5 - is just nice on the type i prefer, but not the soy sauce (lighter soy taste - Not so salty) (usually we will eat with light soy sauce & some pepper). Can have a try if you wanna to find out the different... be prepare the have a long que with standing que and not a spacious shop. better get up and leave after you finish the food and just for the other guest to get their seat for food.

This was our first kaya toast and we loved it, even though we were scared of eating the soft-boiled eggs at first. The table we were seated at had crumbs on it but we didn’t mind because the place was quite full. I got to watch the master making the toasts and coffee while waiting in a queue. We paid 7,8 SGD for two coffees and 4 kaya toast slices and 2 eggs. We had better kaya toasts later in Malaysia but this one was the most memorable for its atmosphere.

  • 4/5 J A. 9 months ago on Google
There are only approximately 10 tables available and it gets crowded. However people do eat and leave once they are done. So it’s fine to queue first while you wait for seats to be available during peak hours. Arrived at 1015 and crowd gradually slow down from 1145am. I love the butter kopi here! The toast is delicious! Please remember to try the curry puff too! It’s so good! I haven’t had such homemade curry puff for the longest time! Please remember to clear your plates and rubbish so the table is available for the next people to use.

Loved this experience I am so glad I went. It was in a more local area and it felt like real Singapore. An old traditional shop filled with locals without the manufactured glitz and glam like the rest of Singapore. Make sure you bring cash. We had the set menu. Kaya butter toast , soft boiled egg ( make sure to add soy sauce) and Iced coffee. It was super cheap and delicious. Highly recomendable for an authentic experience.

The kaya toast in this place is out of the world with that coffee!! It’s the most affordable place and the service is really fast. This place has been making it for 40+ years. Enjoy the toast and relish it. There is also a bakery in-front where curry puff and sardine puffs are available - so yummy with the coffee. Coffee has three types I guess hot, cold and buttered. A super duper breakfast - must try.
