A stunning building. Well worth a visit even if you’re not interested in art. The building itself is awe inspiring. The meld of old and new is sheer genius. There’s enough variety of art to have something for everyone. We didn’t visit the children’s today but there seems to be a lot to do. We visited with a small baby in a pram. It was easy to get around except for gallery 5 where you’ll need the security guard to man the lift. My daughter was breast feeding and the facilities are disappointing - uncomfortable and not big enough to take the push chair in. Overall a great day.

Visiting the museum is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon. It helps the mind to switch gears after a week's work. There are multiple galleries, so you can easily spend 3 to 5 hours here just walking through the different exhibitions. If you are unsure of where to start, you can always approach the counter at Level 1. If you have the membership, there is also a discount in the shop on Level 1 and also at the dining options. There are several dining options with great views of the Padang and the city skyline. The shop has nice items which have local Singaporean elements which are great gifts for friends who might be visiting Singapore from overseas.

Free for all Singaporean but need to be book before entering certain area. A kiosk self tickets near the entrance and make sure remove sticker from the ticket and paste on your shirt to indicate that you are Singaporean and book for the day. Make sure bring your personal camera as most area are good to take photos. If not wrong, there are 4 level to visit and the roof, so be prepared for a long walk. Mostly art, history and architect. There are 2 cafe on ground level and a bar, 2 restaurants at the roof.

It’s a huge place to visit, as there is lots of galleries to explore. The history of the place is interesting as well. General admission is free, with the special exhibition being $15. Overall it’s quite a place to visit.

The National Gallery Singapore is a gorgeous venue with plenty of historical information and experiential sign posting to make for an excellent introduction to understanding the Modern Singapore and how it came to be. The venue is large and has a lengthy range of both historical and artistic information for everyone to enjoy. The venue is particularly beneficial to permanent residents that enjoy free entry. Still with the price of admission as a visitor non citizen.

Very nice pre war buildings which actually consist of 2 buildings and nicely link up in between by walkway. A very nice place for kid to hang around and learn something. Good for adult to spend time over here too as the exhibits are really nice. There is a posh restaurant inside as well but guess must be $$

The National Gallery is the perfect place for peace and self reflection. Aside from the wonderful exhibitions, the architecture and layout of the building itself is an art. The main courtyard has a staircase where visitors can sit and admire the design of the gallery. This landmark is very well thought out and constructed with unique interior elements, showcasing minute details which enriches the whole viewing experience. The service staff are very friendly and easily approachable, not to mention free entry for Singaporeans and Permanent Residence! Highly recommend a trip down to check out the building.

I loved the gallery firstly because it's FREE for locals! 😄 Staffs are helpful and was easy to get the tickets in. I really love the paintings of old Singapore. Brings me back to a nostalgic time and yet so proud of us as asians. We are so multicultural and have such talents. Visit to get some ink water! :)

Please have at least 3 to 4 hours of time to visit this National Gallery Singapore. Beautiful place with very detailed information baout WWII. I used to be part of the team building up this Gallery. We started from scratch, top-down construction. The holding cell, chamber and spiral staircase to the Dome at Former Supreme Court remain almost identical. Miss those days.

Come during the weekday, it's very empty then. Has an excellent showcase of works from artists in the SEA region, very eye opening. I recommend the Between Declarations and Dreams exhibit for everyone. The fact that it's free for locals is sweet too. My only complaint is they don't have many benches for people to rest on while admiring the art except in one of the galleries on the upper floor, and they don't let you sit down on the floor either, even if it's empty. I understand it's probably for covid reasons but it's annoying.

A must visit for all visitors to Singapore. An art museum situated in the former Supreme Court of Singapore. One will get to see the remnants of British influence in Singapore as well as art from all around the region. Highly recommended! And also check out the temporary exhibitions that refreshes from time to time.

A wonderful experience. A stunning collection of SE Asian galleries tracing a journey through the political and socioeconomic process of each country. Special exhibition of Australian First peoples artwork was exceptional as a visiting Australian. Was also an exciting moment to see 2 pieces from an artist that i personally know.

Unique interiors design and awesome. The idea of a national gallery was mooted in 1957. The interiors are remarkable and breathtaking. It's the place of interest for many Tourist, Singaporeans and Permanent Residence. Free admission for Singaporeans. Staffs are very friendly and helpful. Cafe at ground level and bar, restaurants at the roof. Suggest, m we can have various traditional foods sold in National Gallery. Historical landmark of Singapore. Former Supreme Court of Singapore. Previously also known as CityHall. Near Peninsula Plaza, Singapore 179098.

It's huge. I spent 4 hours in this museum and I enjoyed it. There's no other museums where I can see Indonesian and Singaporean artists' works so I am delighted and satisfied. There are international big names in special exhibitions as well. If you are an art lover, don't miss it!

Quiet, uncrowded place to view art. Often one would be able to see wedding couples taking their photos there too! Go, see and immerse yourselves in our art!

National Gallery is located in the heart of CBD just opposite the Padang. The building is rich in heritage but the interior is beautifully designed. The architecture combines neoclassical with modernity. There are thousand of art works on display ranging from historical paintings, abstract parts, contemporary masterpieces and visual arts.

It's good time to go as there is hardly any visitors. If you are artsy, at least will take you 5 to 6 hrs to complete all the exhibits. Don't missed the reflection pools at roof top and also the view from there on the city scape is breath taking. On a hot day, it was breezy. It's free for Singaporeans and PRs. All the gallery assistants are very well trained and discreet.

Very impressive and varied collection. I’m not a huge art museum person but I enjoyed this quite a bit. The building itself is quite interesting, they’ve combined the former Supreme Court and the former City Hall into a gallery with modern architecture tying them together. The roof garden exhibit is very cool. Also neat to see some of the historical pictures from surrounding SE Asia countries. Multiple dining options within.

Went there for a quick visit and only went to the free admission area. For free admission you get to visit B1, Level 4 and 5. You get a basic history of the building and nice rooftop area. Spent about almost 2 hours there including reading the architecture history of the building and seeing the sculpture + a bit photography session. Great gallery.

My 3yo son really enjoyed himself at the exhibits. While some of them didn't interest him as much, he enjoyed a few exhibits to the point of staying for 1-2hrs at some exhibits. Some exhibits scared him and some exhibits bore him, but he found some to really enjoy. The employees were very helpful and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable.

A place to feel cultured and spend a few hours learning about artists of the past and present. Opens everyday and free entry for Singaporeans and PR. Ask for the free guided tour. Just take the MRT to City Hall and proceed to exit B. It's a 5-minute walk from the train station.

There is a path with a cover that helps prevent getting wet from the rain directly from the city hall station to the gallery. The gallery is huge, I spent three hours inside as they have two blocks with a shared basement level. I will say I am confused about where to start, but I recommend finishing by visiting one block from the top and visiting the basement so you can walk to another block. They have bridges connecting two blocks at some levels, which is a good place to take pictures of the architecture. I admire how they have kids' zone so they can interact with art. The gift shop is fantastic as well as they have items related to the exhibitions, which is what I hope since I have been to different galleries and museums but they don’t offer a good range of souvenirs.

The museum building is stunning, with water ripples from the skylight creating beautiful reflections on its interior surfaces. The art collection is one-of-a-kind and provides a great insight into Singaporean art history. The museum is quite huge, so it's recommended to take your time and allow several hours to explore each gallery space thoroughly.

Wonderful place to spend a whole day with family that’s free for Singaporean and PR. There’s a Children Biennale event that’s free. The event has many stations around the gallery with many having little activities for the children. Each station the kids can collect stamps which in the end can be redeemed for a small present. My favourite is the station where you can build your own blanket fort. Children (or child-liked adult) can easily spend an hour here. Would want to come back for the actual gallery.

The ticket fee is not very cheap, but there are many parts of the gallery that are free to access, including some of their temporary exhibitions. Do check their website before you visit. You need to allocate quite some time if you intend to explore this place because it’s huge and very interesting. We came there thinking that 1,5 hours would be enough but ended up hurrying through the buildings and not having enough time. There’s a very cozy library inside where you can browse some books especially about art. You can also get a nice view of MBS from the rooftop.

went to this place for a school trip, it has many friendly guides. The overall internal design of this place was really unique and the exterior too. This is a perfect place for students to learn about some history of the artworks and admire the techniques and art styles of past artist. Especially loved the art work “malay kampung” where the artiest used carved wood to imprint the picture of a piece of paper. Even though it was only a short hour tour, it was very meaningful and eventful. would definitely come again!

The former Supreme Court is a historical building, if you are interested in art, you can spend a whole day there to gain knowledge about Singapore art history. A ticket is required for entry but is free for the locals. It has a floor for the children to spend a day there too. If you are not interested in art, it is a very good place for taking beautiful pictures at almost every corner.

I love it. Staff was very polite and helpful, even if there were some old staff trying their best to show the guests where to go and what to see. The building itself was a work of art with the unique design inside and other decorations. I really like the paintings. I didn't even need to go to the museum to learn about the history of Singapore, it was right there, inside each paintings which carried with them different cultures and traditions from different ethnic in Singapore. The color using was marvelous. The same material can create matted color or shinny oil color. The photographer's zone was very interesting, too. It show old life of Singapore before it was so great like that. It was history inside every piece of art.

I really like the atmosphere. The best museum experience I ever had. The collections are varied from many types of genre. The place is enormous with two wings, City Hall and the Supreme Court. In City Hall wing, which is the largest one, you can see lots of exhibitions and gallery, both permanent and not. In the Supreme Court, all exhibits are placed inside all courthouse so you can experience the real courthouse. Most of the collections are historical, including the Independence Declaration. For Singaporean residence, it is free of charge, but for a foreigner, we need to pay some money. You can also be their member for more privileges. If you come as students or teacher, don't forget to bring your identification card so you can have a discounted price. See their website for more information. My advice for visiting this place, spend three hours minimum if you want to see all parts of the exhibitions. The area is also quiet and relaxing.

Arguably the largest and most jam-packed museum in Singapore. The amount of artifacts and exhibits seems limitless. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece. You can literally spend one whole day here and not finish browsing all the halls. Staff were friendly and the facilities in the galley are decent and ample. My favourite part is the environmentally-friendly roof. It is a brilliant place to unwind and enjoy the warm sunlight during your visit.

Standing beside the Padang, Singaporean - young and old should visit this place. As a family with young kids, national gallery is often our to-go place in wet or hot whether. The staff here are very friendly and helpful, always trying to make our visit a pleasant experience. There's special exhibition for children but they are closed due to covid situation. Nonetheless there are still a lot of things to explore for at least half a day. We normally have lunch at the courtyard cafe. The price is reasonable for the location and quality of food. The bar at the top floor offers a stunning view of the city skyline. You could take photos in the day

I'd rate National Gallery 6 stars if I could. It never fails to impress. I have two young children and they loved the childrens' exhibitions- especially the showcase of Georgette Chen which is brilliant. Sign your children up to be a Gallery Kid member and you even get a complimentary arty-farty book- how awesome is that! There's a new cafe that took over the former Gallery cafe (next to the gift shop) which is not too bad for a quick bite- free kid's meal with every main. I'd spend all day here (its a wonderful wet-weather activity). Lastly, I'd like to commend all the silver-haired staff helping with the exhibits/acting as guides/manning the counters. So patient, kind and polite- even so caring as to remind us not to forget our belongings! They are the true treasures at the National Gallery!!!

Nice use of old buildings - City Hall and Supreme Court - converted to an art museum. Rotating exhibitions require tickets for non-resident visitors, and are housed on the upper floors. A rooftop garden provides a bit of sunlight and fresh air, and large windows offer nice views of the Padang across the street. Large children's area so you can bring the family and enjoy the day.

This museum is definitely worth a visit! Like most things in Singapore, this museum is a perfect mix of modern and historical works. The curation of the exhibits show the Westernization and the individualism of the Singaporean spirit and is really powerful in its message. Definitely worth a few hours here to escape from the hustle and bustle of other tourist attractions. Note: Visited prior to COVID, so things may be different.

Visited a few times. They run quite a few exhibitions, most of them on Singapore's national history (hence the name of the museum) spanning quite a long period, from pre-colonial till post-WW2. Besides the galleries, the building architecture is beautiful too, of course. If you go to the top floor, there is an amazing view of some prominent features of the Singapore skyline- Padang, Esplanade, Marina Bay Sands. We recently came by during the "Light to Night" festival, where there were some cool light shows on display.

Learn some new things about the history of Singapore, looking at detailed artefacts, presentations and even art murals and exhibits! Did a little shopping at the Gallery Store as well. Then after dinner at nearby Raffles City Shopping Centre. Good tips: Go during off-peak days and hours to have an immersive undisturbed experience. I will be back again for an exclusive unseen & unheard tour around the Supreme Court Wing secret passageway and places which are closed to the public.

She took us through her personal favourites of the SE Asian art galleries, and was personable and approachable. The tour itself was an impromptu decision on my part - I dropped by the museum to enquire on availability of tours, and their very helpful staff members assisted me and helped me sign up for one that was scheduled to start an hour later. An overall excellent experience at the National Gallery thanks to its wonderful staff and volunteers.

What a fun day exploring the museum! Happened to have some children pop out too so was a bonus.. it was a quiet afternoon Friday very easy accessible by City Hall MRT.. most of the exhibition are free too. Most of the staff we met was also friendly, we met one security guard who knew his history well and spend some time to tell us too! We love it.. Only got 1 of the staff in one of the exhibition who was too over protective of the art? She was kinda alarming and asked us not to step into the yellow box? When my child feet is not even half of it inside? She could have told us nicely, we heard she spoke nicer with others before we went in thus we know. What a pity cuz she kinda spoil our day. Other den that all are good!

Simply one of the best museums in this part of the world! National Gallery Singapore is a leading visual arts institution which oversees the world's largest public collection (9,000+ works) of Singapore and Southeast Asian modern art. I use to visit myself to do some photography shots of different aspects of this building (more abstract) rather than for the art. Did a few tours here before when I was a university student. This museum is popular with both locals and tourists. It is spread across two beautiful national monuments: City Hall and the country’s former Supreme Court. Reflecting Singapore’s unique heritage and geographical location, the Gallery aims to be a progressive museum that creates dialogues between the art of Singapore, Southeast Asia and the world to foster and inspire a creative and inclusive society. If you need peace and quiet (like myself), go early and avoid weekends and public holidays.the story behind each art is actually very interesting if you take the time to listen on their audio tour. There is no dress code for the Gallery but it can get really cold so advisable to bring something to keep yourself warm. Galleries are wheelchair- and stroller-accessible as well so very good for family outings. Daily hour-long tours are available free of charge and are conducted in English and Mandarin. Free general admission for Singaporeans and PRs. Open daily from 10am to 7pm. Admission and ticket sales end 30 minutes before closing time.Nearest train station is City Hall MRT (3 - 5 minutes walk). A taxi stand is located at the Gallery’s Coleman Street entrance, which is accessible by turning right at the end of Supreme Court Lane. Next closest taxi stands are located at The Adelphi. Cars can drop-off and pick-up passengers at the Coleman Street entrance, which is accessible by turning right at the end of Supreme Court Lane. Car Park is also available at the basement but it can get pretty expensive to be honest, unless you enter after 6pm. 7am–6pm: $1.30 per half hour. 6pm–1am: $3.20 per entry. Motorbike parking: $1 per entry, no overnight parking. I would suggest you try Funan parking instead.

Well built, preserved and maintained building. The outdoor view of the building is remarkable but the interior was even more breathtaking, the stairs, indoor pedestrian bridge/pathway are notable mentions for taking really good pictures for visitors. Kids friendly space 💙 inclusive gallery. An open and friendly place to learn about art and appreciate it. Get to know the history of art by looking at some of the artworks of the past, contemporary art exhibitions and a gallery of children's works connected to schools in Singapore. 1 day is not enough to visit here. In addition to the exhibition space, there is also a restaurant and the view on the roof top is very good. On weekends, this place is full of families....

I can't help but marvel at this being the most beautiful art gallery and museum I've visited in recent years. Sunlight streams through the glass, casting a glow on the milky white walls. The interior of the exhibition hall is filled with delightfully symmetrical designs that bring joy to the mind and body. What’s this place all about? National Gallery Singapore owns the largest public collection of modern art in Southeast Asia. The focus here is on Singaporean and Southeast Asian art from the 19th century to present day. There are always temporary exhibitions; past lineups such as Chinese calligraphy, and Vietnamese lacquer painting.

  • 5/5 Jason A. 9 months ago on Google
A very large art gallery, mostly modern art but I really enjoyed the exhibit that showed art progression through the different eras in Southeast Asia. It was a relatively nice experience. We took the general tickets that covered a fair number of ground. Spent up to 3 hours. It was a bit difficult to navigate everything between different floors and buildings, but we found our way all good. The staff was from cold to friendly. Usually, they would seem very supervisory, even police like, but please understand that it's their job to make sure that no one is harming the art. Also, if you greet them or chat with them, they seem much more pleasant. As a final note, note that there are paintings that you cannot take pictures of (they are signed). If you do and get caught, you will be asked to delete them, even from the recycle bin. :D overall, nice gallery, pleasant afternoon.

2 hours is definitely not enough if you like to go through all the exhibits. Thanks to the friendly staff stationed at chief justice chamber, I had a better understanding of that segment.

Hard to navigate around the area even as a local. The tickets are a pain- online buying, in-person kiosk printing, or buying at the counter, all of these are annoying for me, a local student who wants to get into the free exhibitions. Onto the actual galleries. You can easily spend 4 hours here. There are a lot! Paintings by highlihted artists, local artists, history, and war. Messily placed all around on the different levels of the two buildings. A lot of them had plaques eith little description, opting for a QR code scan which is so lame. Just show me the details? The supreme court itself is very dim so it kinda takes away the vibe. They also had some VR/AR along the hallways where you can "explore" the old supreme court in VR. It was clunky, awkward, a poor use of space. Some rooms talk about the history of the building which used to be the supreme court. The room is cramped and filled with text, everything is at eye level so it's crowded and messy to read. Some of the galleries talk about war and should have parental advisory. There was this video of a rat being burnt with napalm, you can see the skin and bones as it dissolves in the chemical. I hear kids gasping behind me and even I was caught off-guard. They have so many staff stationed around that stand up when you walk near them which feels a bit awkward. Quite kid-friendly away from the war stuff. I like that there was one silent room for people who get overstimulated, with cushions and ambient noises and everything. Calming! There were also some yarn playground and origami making for kids so they don't get bored. The yarn playground also emphasizes on sustainability which is nice to see. Overall, I think other galleries and museums are better designed. Eg. national museum. They can better incorporate digital technology like VR and make the ticketing process smoother. Some rooms are too cramped with text and photos which is a pain for the eyes (like the keppel one? on the history of the building itself).

😠 The SAM has always been my favourite museum in Singapore, hence I was pretty excited that I finally got the chance to visit the new SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. I don’t really like the new SAM; mainly cos it’s so tiny and doesn’t have the same vibes as the old one. I miss the old SAM!!! ☹️
