In my opinion they have the best indian food here. I absolutely love their Masala Thosai (been my fave since I was young) and it basically is spiced potato wrapped in a thosai! It comes with 3 sauces and my fave sauce is the coconut chutney followed by the curry in the middle. They also have naan here. I personally like their garlic naan. They have plain, butter, cheese etc. They also have mushroom mutter and butter paneer which is super yummy by the way. Coming here you also have to try their teh tarik. It's served in two cups for you to cool the tea down by "pulling" the tea hence teh tarik! Definitely an experience you should try! In terms of location it is about a 5 minute walk from Little India MRT station. Quite accessible. However why I gave it 4 stars was because we had to wait quite awhile for our food to be served but I would say the food is worth the wait. The place is also air conditioned so its a great respite from the blazing heat outside. They also sell Ladu (Indian sweets) and my sis and I used to absolutely love the milk one with the edible foil but because its really sweet and we are trying to be more health conscious we skipped it this time. We noticed some people come in just to enjoy some drinks and dessert and they leave without eating any mains. Rather interesting! Also we realised they added a small little exhibition outside their shop to give some history and context to the heritage of the shop! Worth a look :)

I saw this on a food travel show and immediately wanted to try it out. There was a short queue but seated after 5min or so wait. Service was friendly and no fuss. Dining area is simple but as expected. Definitely lived up to expectations with amazing, fresh, authentic and tasty food. I had the dosai meal which had 3 curries, some chutneys, Daal, sambar, and even a sweet sago coconut pudding. Amazing flavours, colours and spices. A generous meal which was thoroughly enjoyable. For a sweet finish I tried the almond hawa and milk kova which were both new to me. Very sweet but had their own unique taste and texture which hit the spot. One improvement would be to use less plastic for serving food - lots of little plastic containers on my meal set and for sweets. Overall a great experience and will definitely be recommending and be back.

I enjoy visiting this place. Their food is authentic and scrumptious. It is usually crowded. I recommend the banana leaf meal as it is flavourful and original. I also like their dosas(a salty pancake) and lassi ( a sweet drink). They also have quite good service and enough chairs and table. However, their hygiene standards can increase. They need to clean the dining area more often. Overall, I really recommend this place. You can meet family and friends here.It is also a pure vegetarian restaurant.

Read a lot of reviews to taste authentic South Indian food and was happy to go here. The food is tasty and coffee is good. Sometimes there is a huge crowd waiting, service is pretty quick. Would recommend for good South Indian food .

Really good vegetarian India restaurant! Get the A1 set and you’ll have fragrant rice curry and naan. Don’t forget the pull tea.

We went here for brunch (around 10AM), and there is a long line already. Staff is very accommodating, but it's pretty hard to get their attention since the place is packed. Eating here is an experience, you get to use your hands to eat the food, and the people around you use their hands as well, the experience is very communal. Food tastes amazing, spices are not overpowering, it's just the perfect blend. Masala is really good.

Komala Villa, Little India: All hail the dosai meal which fits the bill for those with eyes bigger than the stomach,. One serving serves 2 unless you haven’t eaten for days. There are 2 levels but quick to go Dosai meals are on the first floor and the massive ones are upstairs. This place gets packed with tourists so make your pilgrimage here off peak hours. #eatstylishtravelstylish

A delight to every South Indian dish that’s being presented! The restaurant holds the legacy with not just the location, the interior but also to the taste with food. We tried a few variations including the famous meal and biriyani. A must try will be the meal combo, served hot. We had to wait for around 30 mins to get seated but it’s worth the wait.. ground floor and first floor has seating capacity. The prices are very reasonable for the quantity being served. Will definitely recommend this place for all South Indian vegetarian fans!

We just shifted to Singapore and this place filled my heart with so much warmth and love because the south indian food here is absolutely impeccable, as good as eating in south India! 😭 The idlis were so warm and soft, so were the dosas and my Andhra meal? Soso delicious. 10/10 recommend if you're feeling homesick!

There are a few authentic South Indian breakfast places in Little India and Singapore in general, but Komala Vilas is by far the best of the lot. We usually try and arrive at opening time at 7AM, where there is usually a queue waiting to get in. There are no menus here, instead the items are listed on the wall. Service is quick and efficient. We've tried the following : Vada Set : Nice crispy vadas with fresh coconut chutney, tomato chutney and hot sambar. Onion Uthappam : Flavorful and soft! Masala dosa : Tasty and decent quantity of potato. Ghee dosa : Laden with ghee, but not overpowering. Goes really well with all chutneys. Upma : Soft and again goes well with the coconut chutney. Filter coffee : Strong, and really does wake you up. Chole Bature : Crispy and hot bature, even better chole. Dahi puri : Crispy bundi on a nice layer of fresh curds. Highly recommended!

Food here is good, not that very bad. Service got to improve. Environment can be cramped and noisy. Pricey but still okay, you pay what you asked for. I was served food first, even finished up eating the foods but drinks were served after 5-10 after finishing up my meals. Masala tea arrived 30-40 minutes late upon ordering. This is not acceptable at all. And never even apologized for serving the drinks late. I ordered one ice tea and one masala tea. Also, I personally feel the standard of the food have dropped a lot. Used to patronize here often but I think it's about time that the service and food taste is falling apart. Overall food is 7.5/10. Service is 3/10. Environment is 4.5/10. This review is based on my honest opinion.

The food and service is always good in Komala Vilas. We stay nearby so we can walk to this restaurant during our jaunt in Singapore. I wish they include an elevator to go upstairs for lunch. On request they let my parents share the meals but mentioned there will be no refills. Taste is always exceptional.

This is a vegetarian restaurant and I never thought I'll like vegetarian food until I came to Komala Vilas! The food is not very spicy (which is perfect for me), and what I love is the white rice. I don't know how they cook it, but its so fluffy. The best thing is that the food is really authentic, the rice set has so many flavours. Really impressed with the quality. The 2nd best thing is that you can have non stop refills of any ingredient! Highly recommended.

During the Covid times, I have frequented the Komala Vilas restaurant along Serangoon Road many many times and the excellent food and service has propelled me to write this review. If you want to get excellent filter coffee and excellent Dosa varieties, there is no better place than here in Singapore! I would also like to make a special mention of the efficient service of the employees, especially a very sweet lady Ranjeet who oversees all the covid protocols in the restaurant and ensures smooth flow of customers. I have gone to many restaurants in the last 1 year, but I am surprised how kindly and courteously she manages the crowd and serves takeaways! A Big Thank You to her in adding to make Komala Vilas a very pleasant experience!

So far the best Idly Chilly I have had. Komala Vilas is the place to visit if you wish you have an authentic South Indian cuisine. The restaurant is in Little India section of Singapore. There is a high chance that you may have to wait 5-10 minutes before your turn due to hour round rush at this outlet. The tables are set apart from each other to comply with covid guidelines (however it isn’t as far as the tables should be). We had Mysore Masala Dosa and Chilly Mini Idly, which was out of the world. The idly came with raita. Didn’t look like a good combination but tasted too good. Buttermilk is a must try here. The restaurant also offers North Indian cuisine.

Really glad I came here for their Dosai. It is probably one of the best. The serving is very generous. I highly recommend the Paper/Masala Dosai. The Masala Tea is also very good, served in a tumbler and came in another wider and shorter cup for cooling purpose. And there is also a mini heritage display outside to explain the various utensil used and history which dates back to 1947. What a great experience.

This place has various options of South Indian food here. The set menu is enough for 2 persons. The rest of the dishes are simply good in taste. I love the mini idly rasam. Idly was just perfect, so Gulabjamun, too. They both just melted in mouth. We saw a waiting line and afterward it was fine. Don't miss the place. This place has got good crowds and tourists too. This place not at all far from the Little India MRT.

We visit Komala Villas whenever we arrive in Singapore. We enjoy their vegetarian dishes. Whilst on this trip there was a queue at the restaurant but it moved quickly with help of their staff, a fair Indian lady who came out to give a drink to everyone while we were waiting to be seated. She was also making sure the take away was managed timely at the same time the tables were attended to . She was very conscientious in her work and friendly.

Arrived at around 11am on a Saturday morning and there was already a queue. However the queue moves fast! Was allocated to a seat on level 2. Contrary to what was written in other reviews, I didn't feel that the staircase was narrow. The entire restaurant is air-conditioned and clean. Be sure to order at the cashier before heading back to your seat, where you'll hand the receipt to the waiter. The lady at the counter was friendly and honest! She prompted me that what I've ordered is sufficient for the amount of people I came with (rather than allowing me to order more eventhough that'll mean they'll earn more money). The Bhatura was huge, delicious! So was the mysore dosai! The masala tea was flavourful, packed with spice and not too sweet. The Gobi Manchurian was however a little too salty for my liking. Be sure to ask the waiters for your Masala Tea if you will like it to be served before/during your meal. If you don't, I noticed that they'll only serve it at the end of your meal. Will be back!

Food is good. But service not so promptly. We kept asking for service to order and either the staff didn't notice our table or too busy to take other orders... they told us to wait... Good indian vegetarian restaurants, especially south Indian. When most Indian restaurants by Singaporean tamils don't match the taste and quality of authentic India food, komala nivas is an exception by offering good quality food at normal prices and good service. This restaurant on race course road is air conditioned as well yet retaining the traditional India mess look

Very delicious south India food at lower cost and authentic taste better than Delhi idily-dosa restaurants in CP Delhi area. This is best option we had as vegetarian on Tuesdays/Thursdays/Saturdays. Near to Little India MRT and Indian food court which is also full of Briyanis and non-veg items with South Indian spices taste. Restaurant staff had allowed us very late after 10:30pm with our kids as last order before they stop cooking. If you are in little India area please go and check out.

Bad customer service. My family went there for dinner today and each of them ordered a meal. My aunt could not finish her biryani meal so my mum had the leftovers instead of wasting the food. My cousin (who also ordered a biryani meal) was approached by the waiter asking if she wants rasam with her biryani. Since the waiter offered, she said okay. My mum then asked if she could have rasam with the biryani which my aunt couldn't finish. To which the waiter said , they don't give additional gravy of any kind for people who are sharing their meal. And the lady at the counter insisted on charging my mum for the rasam if she takes one. The lady working at the counter said their biryani meal doesn't come with a rasam. Then why did the waiter offered rasam to my cousin who was also having biryani? I understand they don't encourage people sharing food because it's business for them. But finishing your family members leftovers is not sharing food. Management side should decide if they want to serve rasam with biryani because it seems both workers have different understanding on this matter. Food maybe decent but if people working there are disrespectful and incompetent, it's a no go for me.

The famous haven for original south Indian meals. From my childhood days I have seen people thronging the restaurant for the best taste. Today the meals served here can hardly be given a gradation.Have they forgotten the food culture of South indians.why do we complete our food with rasam & buttermilk. It is to digest the food we intake & keep us healthy. It was wierd to see komala vilas breaking away from the traditional food culture & serving a soup in lieu of rasam & that too with an overwhelming spicy smell. There are still elderly Singaporeans who adhere & anticipate komalas traditional taste. Don't create a mess by trying to bring in fusion. The vegetables were also tasteless. Hope Komala vilas looks into the issue & changes for good.Make your food reach the soul & not to fill the stomach. Disappointed customer.

This eatery's heritage in Singapore goes way back. You get authentic South Indian food along with some fusion dishes here. All dishes served are 100% vegetarian. The waiting line outside can pile up; so plan early if you're coming with friends and family. Prices are alright for the taste. All in all, a great place to come and savour true South Indian cuisine in Singapore.

We went for a home delivery option using my food.sg website. It provides a hassle free eating experience during COVID-19 times to satiate your eating experience. Three of the dishes we ordered were: - Mushroom mutter Masala - South Indian Thali: it comes with a good portion (more than enough in fact) of rice, sambar, rasam, vathakozhambu, keerai kootu, mixed vegetable, vazhakai fry, pickle, Appalam, vadai, vadam, mor milagai, curd - Chapathi meal set- 3 Chapathi, dal, raitha and 1 vegetable All the dishes were quite homely and tasty. The total cost was about 34S$ with an addition of 10S$ delivery. Food was nicely packed with a lining of banana leaf that added to the experience of Indian cuisine.

  • 5/5 Vijay B. 3 years ago on Google
How can you not rate this anything but 5 star. For such an old establishment, they have maintained their super awesome food quality over the decades. Service is quick and responsive. Their lunchtime thali meals is probably the best in Singapore.

Saw this restaurant when visiting Little India the other evening, It was completely full always a good sign. Went back and was not disappointed, extensive menu and all served fresh. Can recommend the banana bajiss and Biriani served with 5 different vegetable side dishes all finished off with natural sweet lassi. One Biriani adequate for two people if having a side order.

  • 4/5 Sanford C. 3 years ago on Google
Recommend their Mysore Masala Dosai ($5.50). That was a tasty and filling dish. Masala had some crispy edges which gave it a very nice texture. Avoid their rice/vegetarian Biryani sets. Quantity of food was way too much for 1 person so wasted the food. And it wasn’t as tasty. Prefer the real deal for this version instead of the tasteless vegan imitation.

Have been patronising this restaurant for 21 years. Lately their service is bad. I was here on 12 Jan 21 with my daughter. Ordered paper dosai, bru coffee and rose milk for dine in and mini sambar idly for takeaway. The paper dosai came first and the mini sambat idly was served.when I told early that it's for take away. Ate finish the dosai and I was frustrated that the bru coffee was still not served. The service should be improved.

One morning, we woke up early and decided to get here for breakfast. The place has a queue at 8 am in the morning (that's how good it is!) & every dish we ordered was delicious. We ordered aloo puri, rava masala dosa and vada chutney. Each dish was made to perfection. We loved it! ❤

Had a set meal on 15th Nov. Utter rubbish!! It's only decent of you to taste your own food before serving it to others. Or have you forgotten ethics? Except for salt & a high level of spice, there no taste on any dish except the payasam. And to top it off, 2 of the staffs were talking so loudly on video call in the room near the hand wash area. Disgraceful!!

Awesome Roti and really cheap. Fantastic south Indian food options here and all are delicious, filling and incredibly affordable. You could easily share one Roti between two. Authentic experience with metal trays, and mainly encouragement to eat with your hands. Quality is good and it's right in the thick of little India, only a short walk from Hindu temples, some historic old buildings and the large mosque. Great little lunch spot

Small place. Nice dosai, sambar and chutney. Pricing acceptable. Vegetarian. Iced tea very sweet but also very nice. If you eat rice can go lvl 2, else lvl 1. Dosai is thin and crisp. The sauce pairing is great.

As a long-standing patron of Komala Vilas in Singapore, I have, with enthusiasm, recommended it to over 100 peers and colleagues, touting it as the go-to place for authentic South Indian cuisine. However, today's experience has left me in disarray. An uneasy premonition consumed me as I stepped in, and regrettably, it proved true. I found myself waiting for my takeaway for almost 40 minutes while the attendant, referred to as Reddy, appeared to overlook calling out completed orders. Suspecting my order was long ready, I intervened, only to discover it had been waiting unattended for over 20 minutes. At home, the experience soured further. Out of the three chutneys provided, one was spoiled, another seemed less than fresh, leaving only one as palatable. The chilli parotta, even after reheating, tasted akin to rubber. The rava dosa was overly greasy, although the poori was passable. Through this disappointing experience, I felt obligated to give a heads up to my peers to reconsider any plans to dine here. It pains me to reduce my rating to one star, given my history with this restaurant. However, in the pursuit of authenticity and quality, this seems an unfortunate necessity.

Managed to get a seat pretty quickly on a weekday around 12pm. Bhatura - 4.5 stars Our favourite. Giant freshly fried doughnut. Loved the flavourful chickpeas it came with. Gobi Manchurian - 4 stars Not freshly fried as it was served at room temperature. Palak paneer - 3.5 stars Decent. Paneer butter masala - 3.5 stars Not very flavourful. Could've skipped this. Tomato uttapam - 3 stars Tasted like an unflavoured pancake. Vadai - 2 stars Dry and not freshly made/hot. +++ Sambar idli - 3.75 stars Sambar was slightly spicy. +++ Onion masala rawa dosa ($6.50) - 4 stars Loved the airy crepe texture of this semolina dosa, which goes well with the heavier fillings. Butter paneer dosa ($8.50) - 3.75 stars Masala tea, no sugar ($1.90) - 3.75 stars Teh halia, no sugar ($1.90) - 3.75 stars Fairly subtle ginger taste. Tea doesn't taste strong but I felt AWAKE after.

I was bragging how good MTR was and my friend said this place was better…in some ways I found that to be true. The menu here is more extensive and probably offers a lot more than MTR giving more options for everyone. Quality wise MTR wins I think, though this place is still good, they do more offerings which is prob why it impacts quality of each dish. I definitely liked the sauces and chutneys that come with each. We tried the idly, vadai and dosa, quite ok. The atmosphere of this place need renovation, quite dark and drab, I say the same thing of MTR, quite sterile there. I would come back here and try different menu items, all looks delish.

It is an icon, after all. We went upstairs as one of us wanted a thali. A bit tricky getting up and down the narrow staircase. Would have thought there would have been improvements made during the reno. Service was outstanding. Rocket prata disappointingly mushy. The rest of the food is childhood fare and we love it always have. Fantastic menu The assortment of people is really testament to how awesome this stalwart of SouthIndian Singapore cuisine is. Service was superb, perhaps because my elderly mother is adorable.

Serving authentic tosai - had the podi thosai (spicy!), ghee thosai (so buttery) and butter paneer tosai (very interesting texture). My favorite part of this is the incredible coriander chutney that comes with all the thosai. Masala chai is fragrant, served in the traditional metal cups. The place gets very busy--good to go early or you'll typically have to stand in line

The dining experience at Komala Vilas is truly exceptional. Nestled within the vibrant enclave of Little India, this establishment is a culinary gem. Both the cuisine and service consistently excel. Remarkable value is offered for every dollar spent, with portions that are notably generous. During our visits, we had the pleasure of savoring South Indian meals for dinner, and the flavors were nothing short of delightful. The culinary journey included an assortment of dishes, such as rava dosa, nan, pakida, and badham geer, all of which left a lasting impression. While the overall experience was outstanding, there was one minor area for improvement: the puran poli could benefit from further refinement to meet the restaurant's otherwise high standards. In conclusion, dining at Komala Vilas is a gratifying experience marked by delectable offerings, attentive service, and excellent value for money.

Great place for Indian Vegetarian Food. At this Era still the pricey of the food is kept Minimal with Great Quality and Taste. Always you would see the crowd waiting in line and would see lot of tourists trying this. Must try all their tiffin items and if you are visiting during lunch time try their meals. Ambience is OK and generally crowded. They opened new branch again which is 5-7 mins walk from this branch. A must try place in Singapore if you love Indian Vegeterian Cuisine.

Having spent some time working in southern India over the years I was keen to get my Dosai fix while I was on holiday. This place fulfilled that. We arrived at 6pm and the restaurant was almost full, we were ushered upstairs and we took one of the few free tables. The decor was a little tired, but I could see the food on tables looked great (and generous). Our food arrived quickly and was fresh and pipping hot. The dosai meal was everything I wanted and had hoped for. Perfect - I could have been back in Bangalore!! As we left we noticed a large queue had formed and by all accounts it’s like that every day. So, go early. Thoroughly recommended
