The service provided by Raja was great. Attention to details. We had idly since the name of the shop suggested that.

My recent visit to Murugan Idli Shop in Singapore was an authentic South Indian culinary journey. The restaurant's simple yet vibrant ambiance resonated with the essence of traditional South Indian eateries and the chain in Tamil Nadu. The service was swift and friendly, with the staff providing helpful recommendations (when you managed to grab their attention) The positive aspect was the delectable array of dishes, with the Idli and Medu Vada being particularly outstanding—soft, flavorful, and a perfect representation of South Indian breakfast fare. However, the seating arrangement, especially during peak hours, could be a bit cramped as people are waiting for seating. For a more relaxed experience, visiting during weekdays for an early breakfast is recommended. Murugan Idli Shop is a haven for those seeking genuine South Indian flavors in the heart of Singapore, offering a taste of home for both locals and expatriates alike.

If you’re deciding between going here or not, think no further, just go for it. I have been here like a thousand times now (exaggeration, 5+ times) and I have tried it in every setting, with my South Indian friend, German friend, Filipino friend, solo and to no surprise all of them LOVED it. Specially the chutneys. I highly recommend their ghee podi idli and ghee podi dosas. Onion butter uttapam has been my go to as well. Staff is really welcoming and they keep refilling my chutneys with a smile, like my mom. 5/5 stars is an understatement.

Ever since my friends in Singapore got to know my love for idli, all of them told me - “Murugan Idli has the best Idli in Singapore”. I finally got to visit the place and I will admit, the ghee podi idli and the onion uthappams were actually very good. However, what really put me off here was the utensils - they had small plastic cups for water and plastic spoons and forks. Eating Idli with a plastic spoon is not only inconvenient but it also kinda takes away the taste of the idli. They served the Chutneys in a thali fashion, and as much as I love the way thalis are presented, practically speaking it made it a messy deal because the chutneys just mix into each other. Overall, I was slightly disappointed, but I guess it’s worth the try?

If you're looking for authentic South Indian food then this place would be the right choice. You would fall in love with their white coconut chutney. Do not forget to try Idli and Masala Dosa. I found the cost on a little higher side after including service charge and GST. Also, the service and cleanliness needs to be improved. At peak time, you may have to wait from 30 minutes to 1 hour for your turn.

If you are looking for a South Indian then this place is Paradise, That’s of the most authentic and soft idlis Dosa vada is very crispy, The staffs are very friendly the rate is also very nominal. It is hard to believe that I haven’t got such soft release in India, served with 4 different varieties of chatni. I would highly recommend to visit this place if you are looking for pure vegetarian south Indian cuisine restaurant.

What a spread if chatnis they have. Its a paradise for Idli-Dosa lovers. Try their Podi Idli and you will agree with me. Crunch and crispy dosa with 4-5 different flavours of chatni to go for. Buttermilk, Lassi and cold drinks are server too on request. Finish off your meal with the Sweet Pongal, you won’t be left disappointed.

Price: $4.76 (Plain Thosai 1st Picture) $8.56 (Ghee Podi Masala Thosai 2nd Picture) Plain Thosai: 5/5 Plain Thosai was extremely crispy, savoury and flavourful. Ghee Podi Masala Thosai: 5/5 The thosai was extremely crispy. The Podi spice blend together with the added ghee was just a match made in heaven. Really flavourful, savoury and spicy. The masala potato filling was soft, flavourful and the onions in it brought a good crunch and sweetness. Sambar: 5/5 The sambar has a good lentil taste. You can tell that many spices were used. It was flavourful, hearty and felt warm and comforting. Chutney: 5/5 The green chutney was flavourful and minty. Orange chutney was flavourful and spicy with a mild sweetness and tartness. The brown chutney was the star. Not sure if it was made of mushrooms but it had the savouriness of mushrooms and was slightly spicy. Total score: 15/15 Add-ons: Coffee ($3.38) was really fragrant and it came piping hot and was really tasty. First time at Murugan Idli and was a little unsure of how things worked but the service staff were very nice and friendly. I took some time to choose my brunch items and when I wanted to hand my order at the counter I was told to sit and relax and the staff will come take my order form from me. The two thosai came together and boy, the 4 chutneys (not sure if I should be given a coconut one) was mind-blowingly good. You should come just for the chutney alone. The thosai were also stacked meaningful with the lighter tasting plain thosai on the stronger tasting ghee podi masala thosai. The coffee is also served after you finished your meal. Amazing attention to detail and timing. Excellent service. Place was well air-conditioned and has Indian music playing in the background.

A very good of place for south Indian food option in Singapore. It’s situates just opposite to mustafa. I tried idli, dosa and uttapam. All these were really tasty and authentic. Their coconut chutney is very good.

We enjoy an occasional outing to Murugan Idli Shop. The quality of the South Indian food here is excellent. The spicy sauces are also quite a hit and the freshness of the dosa, idli etc. make the experience so much refreshing. The quintessential way to serve the food on banana leaves also make it an interesting experience. Lots of nice options for people of all ages. If you haven't been here you are surely missing out. The filter coffee is also very flavourful. Do ask them for a fresh brew. The hand-washing area could be made more hygienic with hourly cleaning.

Quick service and fresh food. Love their dosas and filter coffee. Value for money. They have recently introduced millet dosas which are not really the best because it's a confusion between cuisines and not a good fusion. Didn't understand the concept of adding peanuts on dosa.

If you are looking for authentic South India food then you can't miss this. We tried plain idly, podi idling, vada, plain Dosa, Ghee Dhosa, Butter Dosa, and Masala Dosa. All were good...if I had to select tope 2 then it would be plain Idli and Ghee Dosa. Service was little slow and could have been better.

They’ve got the best idlis in town with free flow chutneys and sambar. The ghee masala dosa also didn’t disappoint. There’s usually a waiting these days due to social distancing limits so you will have to wait outside the restaurant. Maybe they can atleast add a few more chairs for the customers waiting to make it a bearable experience.

I have been eating at Murugan Idli shop at Syed Alwi Road for more than 12 years. Without doubt they serve the best idlis in town. In fact they also used to have best dosa and sambhar as well but their food quality has taken a seious dip in last 3 yeara or so. Their xoconut chutney used to be so amazing but now is so spicy. Don't know whether they have done it deliberately as its a 'free flow' item and used to be taken a lot. Quality of sambhar has also come down. Its more watery now. Dosa filling isn't also as tasty as it used to be. Last thing...filter coffee .I used to live that steel mini glass and Katori and traditional style of serving with inverted glass, now paper cups have taken over and that "feel' is gone. Murugan Idli Shop seriously needs to address its declining quality otherwise there are many restaurants serving south indian food and they will soon start feeling the heat.

In little India near Mustafa, is the best place to have south indian dishes including wada idli and different kind of rice ( including tamarind ) and of course Dosa. Yiu should be ready to eat in a canteen kind of atmosphere. And of course at throwaway prices

It's probably the bestest idlis I have had in my life.. Even five star restaurants cannot match the softness, yumminess or the quality of the idlis here. Being a South Indian, idli is staple at my parents place and I've always been a huge idli fan. When I miss home and have strong idli cravings, the only place I can think of is Murugan Idli. I, along with two of my other friends, frequent this place with great enthusiasm visit this place. Thanks to murugan idli, our WhatsApp group us called Idli and Dosa Parties, we cannot control our excitement when we're planning Murugan Idli dinners. Reasonably priced, good service and consistent quality always. Kudos for keeping up the quality of the chain! Highly recommended!

This has become a must-go on my annual trips to Singapore, went twice on my most recent one. Absolutely top quality dosas, idlis and vadai. Don’t go expecting to be served in bow & tie or to be addressed as sir/madam (or even spoken to). The service is simple and the setting is adequate. This is about the food - real, authentic, uncompromising South Indian cuisine. Gimme some o dat

Best South Indian Breakfast joint with everything freshly prepared and served on a Banana leaf for the authentic taste. There is a free flow of delectable chutneys ( Coconut,Mint,Coriander and another tangy-spicy chutney which I couldn’t unearth the contents) ,Spongy Idlis,Piping hot Medu Vada, flavourful onion Utthapam, classic Masala Dosa. Pair this with a glass of filter coffee and your day will just be sorted!! Must visit place. Reminder: Pure Vegetarian joint and there is always a queue to enter. Absolutely worth the wait!!

Well lit restaurant with the usual semi hard chair and table setup. Says idli shop but they have a lot more on offer. Their, no surprise, podi idli is very good and the Medu Vada too. Dosas tend to come out a bit soggy and cold which is a bit un-usual as that’s something one sees only in take away. Service is courteous and to the point. There is Meetha paan at the cashier for a dollar.

Waiters are terrible. Keep calling them and they just walk past our table. Food was slow to arrive and had to ask for sambar.

  • 5/5 Jiten M. 1 year ago on Google
One of the best authentic tamil style resturants. Always serve hot food, less spicy and palatable. Sambar is hot and nice. They give 4 varieties of Chutney. Follow traditional style of paper and pen order system Which is quite nice. We visit almost every alternate weekends. Very Nice food and price is very economical as per Singapore.

Food was tasty and good options. More of Indian taste. Variety of idly, dosa are good and 4 types of chutneys served are adds more taste. The ambience and way of serving could be improved.

Second time at Murugan's. The place is well known for their idli. Both times, weekend ans weekday lunchtime, the place was busy. Menu doesn't come with photos, so it is better to come prepared and know what you would like to eat. Food is tasty, I liked it all. We ordered the plain dosa, plain idly, a spicy idly and a vadai.

A good place to eat South Indian Tiffin items. Podi idli and Ghee dosa are something which they prepare the best!

  • 1/5 Nityashri V. 9 months ago on Google
Visiting here for the first time post covid. Food quality has deteriorated drastically. Masala dosa was not up to the mark. The chutneys were colourful but didn’t do the least justice to the colors or presentation on the plaintain leaf. Won’t consider visiting here again or recommending the place to anyone any more.

  • 5/5 John a. 3 years ago on Google
Simple tasty vegetarian South Indian food. Set on a banana leaf, with four chutneys, and add on idli, dosah, pongol, and more. The idli are well regarded across Singapore, and the texture, richness, and bouncy nature is as good as anything I have eaten in many trips to Chennai. The sambal has a delightful chili bite that leaves your lips lightly warm after you are done eating. A bit of a queue, but worth the wait.

The food was not to my expectations. The price was really expensive compared to the quantity, quality and service. Furthermore price quoted was excluding GST and service charge. Not recommended and definitely not going back as there are better outlets with better tasting food. Even they charge for podi and the ghee which I think its pathetic. The coffee was $2.50 and it was deliver in a recycle vending machine cup which I think was way beyond the standard.

  • 1/5 Gowri R. 3 years ago on Google
One of the worst customer service I have ever encountered. What is ironic is that they have the famous quote from Mr.M.K.Gandhi on customer service framed behind their cash register. The taste and quality of the food was nothing to applaud either. The idly was soft, that's about it. Dosa, chutneys, vada, sambhar- nothing stood out. We didn't get cutlery or tissues, didn't get the water bottle we ordered or chutney refills until we gestured repeatedly. They don't change plates after dishes, the cleanliness of service or surroundings isn't up there either - fallen cutlery, used tissues on the floor and sink not clean. Ambience reeks of neglect. It also doesn't help that from the serving trays to cutlery and cups, everything is plastic. The staff couldn't care less that you are there until you gesture wildly multiple times. I don't know how this place got into the hall of fame, the management and treatment of customers is way too poor. Totally not worth the price or the hype. Will never return.

Was overcrowded and low on hygiene especially the wash basin surprisingly so unusual of this restaurant that put me off. Felt the food quality was below average other than their idli and podi ildi, rest of the orders with the chutneys were not upto the standard which will surely make me think twice to visit again. Ended up burping the whole night and with bloated stomach post early dinner. Definitely I am going to give a long break from this restaurant and try out elsewhere for South Indian craving.

I went to this hotel for the second time today. The first time, I was really happy with the food and service. The lady who served us handled everything well, and the food was tasty. However, my second visit was not a pleasant experience. When we entered the hotel, it was crowded, and my friend and I were tired, so we decided to sit by the sofa. The server told us it wasn't a service area and asked us to change tables. He seemed busy talking to his colleagues and didn't clean the table properly. Feeling upset and ignored, we were already tired after shopping. He didn't even keep the water glass until someone else reminded him. When he finally put the glass, he laughed it off. The food was served carelessly, and we felt uncomfortable. He continuously made fun of us. I'm not happy with his behavior. I don't know his name, but today he was wearing a gray shirt. Please ask him not to treat customers this way. Despite the good food, I don't want to go to this hotel again because of his behavior.
