Writing this review at 12:03pm on a Wednesday noon while still in the restaurant. We expected live gutting and grilling of eels and having relatively fresh food delivered on the table. However, food was pre-prepared and arrived in less than a few minutes. Food standard is no longer what it used to be when this was the only outlet. Skin was thick, dry and hard to chew. Not flaky and crispy. Meat was decent, thankfully still moist. Highly recommend to come during mid service, queue up and get your dollar's worth. Maybe the eels will taste fresh and not taste like overnight food.

Great place for the unagi. Price wise; Damn, but it's worth the money for the best grilled eel in Singapore. I'm a fan of the fresh wasabi and the spring onions they gave me to eat with the grilled eel. There is a time limit of 40 minutes to eat due to limited seats and Covid restrictions. Just nice to eat, chill a bit and go for a walk.

Great place for have a perfectly grilled unagi, they used just the best quality eels Grilled and marinated well before serving There is 3 options for you to enjoy the meal, first: just eat the unagi with rice, second : put some condiments and mixed it together, the last one is pouring the broth in to the bowl and ejoy it like a soup. Great place, great food, great service

definitely still the best unagi restaurant in Singapore, and I can’t even find such standard unagi in Malaysia. it’s quite pricey, normal size unagi bento price at 30+ SGD, but still kinda worth it🤣

Singapore's most famous unagi restaurant. I would say it does live up to its hype and the meal was quite good. Personally I would say it's worth trying at least once to see if you like it. For me I would say it's good but not mind-blowingly good. The unagi was nicely grilled and the skin was so crispy. The charcoal aroma was also strongly infused in the unagi. A wasabi root was also included in the hitsumabushi set where you can grate your own fresh wasabi which was interesting but also tiresome.. One thing that I didn't quite like was the meat was too thin... In comparison Una Una which is much cheaper has a nice char and decent thickness, and Unatoto is very meaty and tender.

Small little restaurant tucked away from the busy road, where you have to access is from a inner yard. We arrived about 1 hour before they close, so we didn't have to wait. Good for late night dinner. The food was great and delicious. The staff were also very friendly and kind. Having to grate fresh wasabi was a nice experience.

Service was surprisingly fast, and the food came within minutes of ordering. It almost felt as if they had prepared them in advance. The unagi were well-seasoned. There weren't overpowering sauces being poured over and had a slight charred taste that elevated the flavour experience. The ikura was fresh and generously served. Also, I tried the unagi liver, which was quite a unique dish. There weren't any strong iron tastes normally associated with eating liver. It was really well prepared and slightly charred, which made it easy on the tongue. However, it was slightly on the pricier as they used fresh live unagi. It's worth a try nonetheless.

Cool place for unagi don. Taste excellent, hot rice, crispy skins, and tender meat, perfect when you add on the soup! The eels are grilled before your eyes, besides there are eel tanks here so don't worry about the freshness. However, do notice that there is a limit of 40 minutes dining. Overall, good experience, would come back anytime soon!

Live Eel prepared to be grilled, fresh Wasabi for you to grate yourself. A good experience if you like photography also. Definitely worth your time and money because it’s good and staffs is friendly. The Chef grilling the Unagi deserves a pay rise👍👍👍

Overall the food taste and ingredients are good. Freshly grilled, crispy and moist … served with a fresh stalk of wasabi. However the service baffles me. It was a weekend lunch and less than half the shop was filled (ie. many available tables). Yet we were denied entry because our 3rd guest was not yet here. The present guests were shooed off to the outside area. Under the blazing hot sun. Zero sympathy. Even when there were so many available tables. And we were told to shoo off/ wait outside in a ‘sour’ tone. Basically a tone that indicates “we have enough biz, u can go elsewhere if u like” tone. How is it in a 1st world country, serving gourmet food at premium prices … is so disconnected from customer experience or basic courtesy. Zero flexibility. Only follow SOP to the T ?? As for the 40min (allowance) limit to finish your food… I can understand it, esp if there is a long Q waiting under the hot sun. There is none on this day btw… Hence, while the food is 5 stars, 2 stars deducted for poor customer experience.

We've been visiting this restaurant for the hitsumabushi for over a year now and it never disappoints. The grilled unagi is fresh and flavourful, the broth to go with it bursts with umami but is not too salty, and the wasabi is interestingly served such that one has a fun time scraping it fresh from the root. Their current snow crab special is recommended too - you can taste the scent of the sea in it. We did not think much of the tamago side dishes though. We were expecting a tad more sweetness. Come on the dot at 6pm to avoid waiting in queue. It's on the expensive side, but a worthwhile treat for the occasional pampering of the stomach.

Food is good, portion is reasonable butI felt is overpriced . I wasn't very hungry and I shared my food with my husband,. Ordered tea and the waitress repeatedly told me that they charged for the tea. Of course everything we eat we have to pay but this particular waitress is very annoying. I'm not sure if I'm going back there again unless I have my cravings.

Such a great experience! It was the first time in my life I eat Unagi and fresh Wasabi. I loved it! The personal was very nice, helping us deciding what to order and explaining how to eat it. The price was completely acceptable taking into account the quality of the food.

Have been visiting Man Man the past few years whenever I get a craving for Unagi ☺️ their queue has since died down over the past few years and it is a lot easier to get a seat / walk in. They are famous for their Hitsumabushi set which offers you 3 different ways to eat the grilled eel with rice and additional condiments. The grilled eel is always tender yet crispy! Yesterday’s portion might have been a tad bit over grilled as it was quite dry / more crispy. Nonetheless still a good meal. They also serve Japanese beer at $5 a pint (Japanese pint size). You might want to try their tamago egg as well - it’s really good!

No queue on a Thursday evening (unlike what we read online a few years back), the experience with Man Man main outlet was totally awesome. Barring the CNY songs, the set up of the restaurant is very Japanese, and there are even living eels to show that the place serves fresh unagi. Of course, the food was terrific. Fresh unagis that are nicely grilled and doesn't come with sweet teriyaki sauce (yucks) unlike any other place. Despite so, there is no disturbing fishy taste, which is amazing. Best served with their Suntory beer. The black one 😁

Overall experience was not bad. Went in for a quick lunch with wife. Not much queue probably due to the light drizzle. Separate sauce for u to add if you like it on a sweeter note. Go for the bigger portion if you are a big eater. The place is tucked away at a corner.

Fresh Unagi prepped and so much satisfaction in a meal. We were lucky to have caught a table. Random finds for a super good meal of unagi rice. Small no frills deco, but good ambient for the food. ❤️ thank you for feeding us well!

Came here shortly after they opened in the evening. It was not crowded during weekdays. Food were served relatively quick. You get to see the chefs and kitchen staff preparing your food. The unagi was crispy and just about the right thickness for the price point. Waitresses refill your tea regularly.

Great place to satisfy your unagi cravings. If you're open to having a pint of beer during your meal, I'll highly recommend getting a pint of Sapporo for only $5.

We heard there might be long queue but we were lucky enough to get a seat without any queue on a Friday night. The Unagi was so so fresh and nicely grilled. Perhaps the best Unagi don in Singapore. Will come back definitely!

It was a weekday lunch hour, but most seats were filled by about 12:15. Love their use of fresh fishes. Texture of the grilled eels is unmatched. Appreciate their leaving the Sauce entirely to diners. I took it without adding the Sauce. Brand new experience of the sweetness of fresh eel I have not tasted before. Shall come back for more. Don’t think I can find an equal elsewhere in Singapore. 🇸🇬 For that, I shall accept the steep steps at entrance, though not too friendly to my ailing kneecaps. 😅

The staffs are nice and polite. I order Large Unagi Don its a little too much for me. The Unagi is so fresh and so tasty. I also order liver its nice.

  • 2/5 KL N. 6 months ago on Google
Unagi taste and miso soup can't meet half of the Nagoya standard, worst is not even a glass of plain water is given, the waitress simply mentioning we only have 40 minutes to eat (only half full at my time of visit).

  • 4/5 Estey C. 6 months ago on Google
Hole in the wall vibe - up narrow stairs into a dark tight dining room - but a really well done grilled unagi bowl. So fun to watch the grilling! Unagi was meaty, juicy, but all crispy. Glaze was salty and sweet but not so heavy that the skin didn’t crisp or that the bowl was unpalatable. Rice grains were firm and soft, but not mushy. Also enjoyed the pickled daikon and miso soup - super savory but not too salty.

Food is well portioned and delicious! It’s my first time trying the unagi liver and it has a burnt taste which my friend enjoys it more than me. I’ll definitely return to try out the other set 🥰

The Unagi Don was incredibly fresh, and the eel was prepared to perfection. It provided a delightful and mouthwatering dining experience.

It’s been a while since I revisited Man Man at Keong Saik since it’s opening days. I was in the area late and got in about 9pm since I saw it closes at 1030pm. There was no queue. The server informed me I have 40min to dine, which I’m ok with as I understand it’s late. I scanned the QR code and I got the Hitsumabushi set regular size with a 300ml regular sake. Portions are sufficient. But the eel was poorly cooked. Unagi sauce came in a plastic takeaway container and I had to ask for more as it was barely a tablespoon worth. The eel had some parts of hard skin not grilled and other parts not charred nicely. Spring onions served with the set was dry. The standard was a far cry from what it was before. At 930pm the server insisted I paid as the cashier was closing, and for paywave I had to go to counter. But firstly, she said I had to go to the counter and then she was chasing me. I had another cup of sake left, but was irritated at being chased, I barely finished meal so I got up paid and left. I asked the cashier what time do you guys close, she replied “if there’s people 1030 if not 930pm”. I do understand that mentality , but at the same time the bill for 1 x hitsumabushi set plus 1 x sake was $71.05. There many places in the area to spend this amount with better quality food and service, but I won’t return here.

Heard that this is the legendary grilled unagi restaurant in SG so decided to beat the traffic and give it a try. We were there at close to 12 so there are still a lot of seats available and we ordered the unagi set meals. I loved how they still preserve the culture of letting the customers to grind the fresh wasabi ourselves. The unagi was grilled to perfection and didn't put any sauce over it when served, so you get to try its freshness (as their live eels were butchered, prepared, and grilled by the poinsooniers). They have different sauces for you to choose from on the table and my personal favorite is their spicy sauce. Green tea is free flow so you can ask for more if you want. Overall, it's worth the experience and the items in the menu ranges from $20-$40ish.

Man Man Condiments: Grated wasabi. Seaweed. Negi. Appetizers: none. Observations: The sauce is quite sticky such that when you bite the eel, it can get stuck to your teeth a bit. The broth is on the mild side. The good; They give grated wasabi. like and it's the only time I added it to my condiments. There is a bit of crisp also. The bad - they sliced the eel too much. The bite is not as satisfying as the others live eel restaurants I tasted. The tare sauce is quite hard to balance in taste. Unlike at Unajiya where the sweet sauce that you can add was so addictive, this one is quite overpowering and salty so wasn't quite sure what to do with it. No reservations for this outlet. Apparently you get to see the Chef preparing but I was seated quite far away and can't really see anything anyway. was lucky to get in at first seating only cos they had space for one person (two seater can only seat one). Else would be at the second seating. reached at 5.55pm just before they open at 6pm. It is definitely better than their outlet at Bugis but if you ask me whether be okay to queue one hour for this, I will say no. I'd rather make a reservation at the other restaurant at Wheelock which I feel is better.

Heard the raves about Man Man Unagi and is the 1st time I am visiting. The first bite was good as the crispy unagi skin makes it special, but soon I realised its a unagi skin hitsumabushi instead of unagi hitsumabushi. The unagi seems to have undergone extreme slimming programs, barely able to taste unagi meat. Not worth it for the price, am sure there are better unagi restaurants, no wonder there was also no queue during weekend lunch.

  • 5/5 Hello M. 9 months ago on Google
Won't go wrong with probably the best unagi rice available in town. Admired the beautifully skewed unagi grilled over the live stations right in front of you by the chefs which is cooked upon order. Intrically crafted and cooked to perfection.

Reached at 6pm on a friday evening, a quene of 5 groups were formed. Food were served fast, staff were helpful. Unagi was flavourful, tender and crispy on the outside. Would have like more unagi though. Do read up on how to hitsumabushi before coming.

Weekday dinner for which we went, it was not really crowded, had table for 9 people. The grilled eel got slathered with sweet sauce so its taste was overshadowed though the slight crispy texture of the eel skin was maintained. I liked the fact that wasabi got served as a radish chunk, we had to grate it as we ate, however, the fragrant and mildly sweet spicyness of freshly grated wasabi went so well with the eel, helped cut through the sweetness of the soya sauce. Price is on the high side, $35 before tax and service charge, and set me back ~$42 in final bill. Service was fast and efficient.

06/06/23 One of the better unagi I had in Singapore. The skin texture is crisp and not overly covered with sweet unagi sauce. The prickles are crunchy with mild sweetness. Definitely will come back again to try other dishes.

Unagi Tei is still one of the best places in Singapore for Japanese eel. While the overall quality has dropped a bit over the years and numerous expansions, the unagi dons are still worth the occasional visit. The side dishes (fried bones, liver) used to be a must-order for me, though this time, the bones were oily and not crispy.

  • 5/5 jean h. 10 months ago on Google
Unagi is very delicious!!!!!! No queue on weekday night :) total for two people is 80+, not too cheap but okay for yummy unagi

  • 4/5 Terry D. 10 months ago on Google
The hatsumabushj set is considered good in SG and served fast(sth must be wrong). Getting your own Fresh mustard ready is fun and amazing. The quality of the eel is normal, aka not fatty, but taste of unagi is good though chef uses expedited way(pre-grill eel before ordering and add sauce less frequently) to cook. Same goes for the dashi soup. Expedited way of cooking make both with less umami than expected. The pickle and miso soup are good and matches well with others. While for the liver, it is not recommended due to unstable quality. Overall, the price falls a bit on the expensive side given the portion. Free flow drinks is a bonus. Service, ehh normal Singapore level. Also, can see live eel at the entrance.

  • 4/5 Ryan Y. 10 months ago on Google
Unagi • texture was soft, flaky & tender • flavour was mild, could have sauced it up slightly but more • fresh horseradish (self grate) was dry but definitely better than having fake wasabi from a packet • total of $54 including tax for an eel with rice with broth is probably a standard in Singapore (esp. live eel) but not worth the price in terms of nutrition. Service • Was great whilst we came at a quiet time. Atmosphere • Liked bar table sitting where they prepared the eel. Reminded me when I was in Ginza eating eel. • A kitchen staff was playing their phone. I did notice this seems like a common habit for Singaporeans whilst working in front of customers (even the floor manager at Pasta Bar) • prefer pricier places to not have toilets where you have to touch the door handles (or at least have paper towels). Kitchen staff just walked out without washing their hands. Other than that, it’s not too bad.

Very delicious and authentic grilled unagi like I had it last time in Nagoya . Crispy skin and soft meat coated with the sweet sauce, so appetising. Craving to have it again. But, limited space and suggest to visit during not peak lunch or dinner time

  • 4/5 W. H. 1 year ago on Google
Unagi taste good and flavourful but definitely not the best... maybe if given more time to savour other dishes (was given only 40 mins to dine in for my group of 3 pax), we could have given a more accurate review 🤔
