Still an all time favourite to many as the restaurant stands in it's place the last few decades already. I didn't try the Kong Bah Pao this time but I'd surely will the next time. The egg omelette and hotplate tofu are worth trying. Not so sure about the venison though as I thought the sauce leaned on the stronger side. Generally the food is sweet. Maybe a sweet tooth cook.

Food is delicious including the simple dish, spinach, and the braised pork bao didn’t disappoint us! Not to mention it’s great service and clean environment. I also like that they install bell on every table, so even if we were seated outdoor, it’s still very easy to call the staffs. The staffs were very caring and always ask for feedback. We will come again with more people next time to try more dishes.

Booked online. We saw they had many orders to deliver with their online system. We sat indoors where it was air-contioned. We ordered the prawn vermicelli (tasty and generous portion), long beans (beans were crunchy but too salty because there was too much hee bee hiam). The beef brisket was a little disappointing in terms of quantity and the kind of beef cuts they gave. It was also too salty for my liking. Best to go with rice. The ngoh hiang was nice though it's presentation might seem less refined. We also had a little shock when tiny blank ants spilled from the tongs they gave us. Of course, they were very apologetic. Think it was really a one off incident and not representative of the hygiene standards there so we carried on with our meal quite happily. Four dishes, three ladies, $25+ pp.

This place is really old school but a gem.... the Kong Bak Bao is probably the best in Singapore! Took my colleagues here for a post-annual meeting dinner and it was great! Ultra sinful, fatty, but delicious! I’m convinced the Chinese invented the hamburger!

Decided to pick dinner here to try after our family 5km walk/run at botanics. It was nearby. We ordered online and then went for walk then pick up dinner and headed back home. Tried their braised pork with buns (扣肉包), prawns in xo sauce, chicken in salt pepper, deep fried baby squid, baby kai lan in oyster sauce. All the items was well prepared, tasted good and we believe the restaurant does not use msg. The online order platform is easy and friendly to use. The system worked well as we indicated a 630pm pick up. We arrived at around 615pm and the items were just ready and packed. We noted that the restaurant is popular and had many customers picking up their food as well. Good sign. Back again to pack for FIL birthday dinner on 30 oct. 5 stars.

Went back to eat here after a long while. First time i came with family we had pork bun and some other dishes which was ok. I went back with my husband and this time we ordered fried horfun and xiaolongbao (steamed dumplings). The former was too oily and the latter has no soup inside the dumplings. Felt a bit let down. Just dont order these 2 dishes and stick to those recommended by others. Side note is i noticed Westlake employs pioneer generation as waiters and still keep many despite poor business due to covid. So will continue to support them but likely go with family who knows what to order.

This old-timer restaurant serves nice Chinese cuisine. Iberico braised pork with pau is a must order dish. Price on the high side. Prawn roll is nice with reasonable portion. Hotplate beancurd has a tradition taste. Overall, a nice place for lunch/dinner with friends and family.

Went there on a weekend evening for dinner. My first visit there. We had a group of 12 pax which includes 6 children. Some hits and misses with the food. Likes: the kong ba pau was excellent. The kids liked the pau itself without the meat. The pork was very soft and tender. Excellent! Sauce goes very well either with the pau or rice. The other dishes like the hokkien mee was good too. The hotplate tofu didn't have the wok hei smell so I guessed it's most likely the hotplate wasn't heated up sufficiently. The slight spice in the sauce was quite good though! The roast chicken is excellent. Nicely flavoured. Very tender meat. The sweet sour pork was good. Yam ring was great. The chicken, mushrooms inside were plentiful. Broccoli was OK. Overall a good meal. But I think there could be stronger contenders for Zi Char out there. The ambience was good as it is nestled in an old HDB estate.

[Jun 2023] Back at the in-law’s favourite zichar place, since they started dining here more than 30 years ago. Westlake is widely known for their braised pork bun, which comes with perfectly braised thick pork slice (tender meat and meltilicious fats) and the fluffiest white bun/pau. Their other dishes are also worth mentioning, we esp like their fragrant yangzhou fried rice, foo yong egg with crab meat, and fried dumplings. Even their stir fried shanghai greens tasted particularly fresh and crunchy. Service is fast despite the sunday lunch crowd. Recommend this place for a cosy, fuss-free family dinner 👍 [updated photos from subsequent visit in Jul 2023]

Sept 4, 2021 Sunny Saturday. Decided to jog from Jurong Lake to Botanic Garden via Holland Road. Quite a tough route due to many traffic junctions and up slopes. Passed by Westlake at Queen Road where neighbourhood can enjoy delicious food. We used to drop by here for company meals years ago. Completed my 39th half marathon in 2021.

Good flavours and ingredients. Less oily than many other zi chars. Yam basket - Good. Roast chicken - Meaty and juicy with crispy skin. Sweet and sour pork - Good. Venison with spring onion and ginger - Tender. The sliced bamboo shoots went well with it. Stir fried Shanghai green - Good. From an earlier visit: Enjoyed all the dishes. Braised pork with pau - Great, especially the meat and the sauce. Roast chicken - Crispy on the outside yet juicy and tender on the inside. Venison with spring onion and ginger - Tender and had good flavour though could do with larger pieces. Pak chye with mushroom - Good, particularly the nice size, firm mushrooms and the sauce.

The braised pork buns are sure to win critics over and convert non believers. Located in a forgotten corner of Singapore yet sit upon such prime land. The contrarian concept extend to her menu and patrons. From billionaires to the working men as her patron and serving a menu capable of formal celebration as well as a simple quick bite, you will be welcomed. The staff and her outdated poster betray her longevity and you will do well to order the following items as priority Braised Pork buns, prawn roll, kung pao chicken, har cheong chicken and fried rice.

Really good Chinese restaurant. Have heard of it for a long time and finally get to visit it. Main highlight is the braised meat with bun,the Vege and the popiah. mapo tofu was more for kids as it's very mild with tomato sauce. Went to a relative who is a study of the late founder and received a small discount. Very admirable for them to keep to such practice.

Combination platter was as old school as it gets. Loved the assortment of appetizers in a platter. Fish maw soup was thick but somehow a tad sweet. Generous quantity of fish maw. Prawn paste chicken was too mild but the freshness and crispness were undeniable. Steamed Seabass was cooked perfectly but the murky soil flavor is evident. Sauteed Mixed vegetable was good which I would have preferred it was not thicken with so much cornstarch. Kong Bak Pau is their signature dish. Pork belly braised till soft with a rich dark soy sauce. The bun was superbly fluffy. Ngoh Hiong was an extra dish we ordered apart from the set. Fresh and crisp but lacking in flavor which I was looking for. Fried Egg Noodle did not work for me as it was too mushy and oily for my liking. Red Bean Pancake was outstanding. The skin was crispy while the red Bean paste had a balance of sweetness and saltiness. Overall some hits and misses but this is definitely an institution to visit. Service is very competent and friendly with the old staff.

This restaurant has been around for 40 years. We made reservation for Sunday lunch. The braised pork with bun is still good though a bit saltier. The roasted chicken n tofu in hot plate are recommended. I don’t recommend the ngoh hiang as it’s like eating fish cake. Overall we spent about $109 for 4 persons for 4 dishes with drinks. Value for money.

Visited the place recently, and realized this was a place that my parents used to frequent when I was a kid. I had fond memories of this place, given that this was the de-facto place to host my Dad's foreign friends whenever they visited Singapore. The decor and layout hasn't changed too much, apart from the fact that there is now signs of digitalization (tablet POS, QR codes for ordering food, etc). Foodwise, had ordered a stir-fry beef hor fun and it didn't disappoint. There was a good charring of the kway teow and the beef slices weren't too chewy nor tough with a tinge of "wok hey". Overall the portion was pretty good for the small portion ($9 SGD) and thus no complaints there. The dessert however left much to be desired. As a fan of gula melaka, I took the chance to order a bowl of the gula melaka dessert. When it was presented to me, I was taking a 2nd glance on what was served: A bowl of liquid, with sago barely visible and probably a smack of gula melaka and some shaved ice. For the price of $2.50 it really wasn't worth the calories. Overall, the place brings back nostalgia and the food overall is good. If they could work on their desserts a little bit more to be more substantial and presentable, it would be a place I'd gladly host my foreign friends, as my parents did years ago. I'll update my reviews again as I revisit and try out the other dishes, but for now it's 3 stars for me.

Fairly average Chinese cuisine..... The best dish remains the Iberico pork belly with steamed Chinese buns! A must try! Averagely priced but popular with the masses.

Best Kong Bah Pao! Prices of bao has gone up to about $3 per piece. Made their own buns not factory made. Will still buy occasionally to bring home. This restaurant has been cooking good food for at least 20 years. They have many good dishes such as Chilli crab, Yee Fu noodles, really old school food. The menu has all the dishes you will see in Chinese Wedding dinner in the 70s. Maybe a bit far off town but worth it to make a trip there for their Chinese food.

This is a no frills neighbourhood eating house. I have been here at least 7-8 times in the last 5 years and am seldom disappointed by any of the dishes. The food is good especially the Pork Belly Bun, Roast Chicken, Hot and Sour Soup, and Char Hofan. There are lots of reliable go to traditional style dishes. I have never had crab here, so I cannot comment on those. It’s a no frills place where service is fast and can be someone brusque. This is what stops me from giving it a 5 star. They are not rude or terrible- just terribly efficient and dispenses with niceties. Just eat, enjoy and get out. I always recommend booking ahead unless if you don’t mind sitting outside.

Good for old fashioned chinese fare but the place is rather cramped and noisy. If you go late after 7pm, especially on weekends and without reservations, expect to be seated outside without air con. The food standards differ from time to time and across different dishes. Better go for their popular dishes like the Kong bak paus, prawn rolls and braised tofu

I have had "Bao" buns in several restaurants in the United States but I will never bother ordering them again after having the Braised Pork Pau buns here. With each order you get a separate plate of buns and then another plate of the most perfect slices of braised pork. I also had the Shanghai stir fried greens and the hot plate tofu both of which were very good as well.

Like another reviewer mentioned, my food arrived piping hot even though we were 20 minutes away and the delivery was very punctual. Ordered from Westlake as I thought their old school fare would suit my parents' taste buds for my dad's birthday. Parents commented that the food tastes a lot better than what they remembered years ago and my mum couldn't stop raving about how good the food delivered was. She especially liked the roast chicken and hokkien mee. I have never eaten at Westlake personally before this as it is quite far off, but I'm glad I could have enjoyed this with the islandwide delivery (coupled with the 15% off promo so it managed to offset my delivery cost ?).

  • 5/5 Ang Jing W. 3 years ago on Google
Pleasant delivery driver that made way even though he did not know that I was the buyer. Food arrived fresh and piping hot despite being 30 minutes away! Standard of the food itself is great, with the fish being crispy still even though it is a delivery. Pork buns are a must, and the fish maw is smooth and luscious as well, with trimmings all provided (unlike many shops!). Kudos to this place, old is gold indeed.

As a patron to this restaurant for many years, I can vouch for their consistent quality and taste. Best Kong Bak Bao (扣肉包 / braised pork bun) in Singapore; neither too fatty nor too lean (不肥不柴), rich but yet not over-powering gravy well-balanced with freshly steamed buns. Our other favourites include Sze Chuan style hot and sour soup (酸辣汤) and pancakes with red bean paste (豆沙锅饼).

My favourite go to dinner restaurant for some authentic Chinese Singapore food. Hotplate Beancurd comes in a tasty gravy. Very good with white rice! Sweet and sour pork sauce is very balanced with well marinated pieces of fried pork. Prawn paste chicken which is a mainstay for most restaurant cannot be found here. But their version of pepper and salt fried chicken is really tasty. Batter is light and crispy. This place also serves one of the best beef horfun with sauce ! It is definitely a must try. Another dish that was devoured in seconds was the pork bun.

Really old school vibes and friendly staff. We started with their signature kong bak pao, which goes for 6 pieces for $16. The meat was fork tender, and you eat it with lettuce. It was very good, if a little expensive. I also liked the sambal French beans, which was not too spicy but had lovely minced pork with it. The chilli tofu was also pretty good, and had hints of mala. The pan fried dumplings and red bean pancakes were a tad overfried and came dark and slightly oily. The pancakes were better than the dumplings.

Succulent, tender and juicy Kong Ba Bao, this place has been one of my family favourites for decades. Their food does tend to be a tad heavy on the sauce and flavour, so I would suggest not to order too many sauce-heavy dishes. Otherwise, their food is tasty and unpretentious, presenting age old dishes in a classic style. Plus, there is ample parking due to its convenient location over an old HDB estate carpark. Definitely give this a try!

Food and service is alright. Price is on the slightly higher side but overall still affordable. Major complaint? The never ending ringing phones. They have like 4 or 5 of them and they all have different ringtones. Problem starts when the phones ring - they DO NOT answer those darn phones!! And the whole place ends up being super noisy because everyone is trying their best to get above the noise by talking more loudly than normal.

Not really a nice experience, service and food. Service. I respect the seniors in service line, knowing the menu well. However, being impolitely served by 2 isn't very pleasant. They gave us a black face when we ordered our food and didn't respond when we reminded our no-prawn request. Food. Kong bak pau was still good. However, all other dishes were very salty, including stir-fry vegetables. When we asked for more tea and gave a feedback to a server of the saltiness of the dishes, she ignored us and walked away. Despite the reputable kong bak pau, my family will not return to dine in this restaurant. We are willing to eat the dish in other places. It's a pity. A dish with such history and memories... should continue it's legacy with pride and humility. Best wishes.

Food quality dipped comparing to previous dining visit in 2020. Service level was mediocre. It was more of a transactional experience than a human-oriented one. The visit was at 11am just after the place was opened for business, there were no smiles, no greetings, no goodbyes. There was no response when we told one of the waiting staff that a dish was too salty. The crew looked unmotivated, perhaps robotic at best. The Kong Bak Bao salvaged a star to make it 3. Maybe the pandemic took a toll on the people, I do hope the management do not take past reputation for granted and make improvements.

Only worth going for their specialties. I live nearby and have been dozens of times. Famous for their fatty pork buns, but only a few dishes are really worth mentioning. Like their hot & sour soup — probably the best in Singapore. But most of their dishes are just so-so, often too generous with the oil (fried long beans) and too stingy with the portion (fried rice). Some dishes like Kung Pao Chicken just can’t make it (sorry) and beef dishes are only average at best. Compared to other HDB tze char, I’d say it’s roughly 20% more expensive than others of similar quality & quantity.

3 of us had the kong-bah pao (5 pieces with 5 buns and a packet of fresh lettuce), fish slices with kailan, steamed beancurd and fuyong egg (all small portion). Dishes were tasty and not salty. Will go back again when yearning for zichar dishes and pocket is fuller 😅. Ample parking space when entering carpark from Queen's Road @ Upper Bt Timah Rd.

A negative customer service experience yet again. Ordered "Yi Mian" takeaway through the phone but the restaurant prepared "Sheng Mian". Instead of apologising for the error, the lady boss convinced me to take the wrong order by saying, in her EXACT words "Have you had our Yi Mian before? Nice meh? Not nice la. If you insist on Yi Mian it won't be this price you know.” Guys, the lady boss said it herself, "Yi Mian" is NOT nice. Don't order.

One of my family fave eatery. Their kong bak pau (braised pork belly steamed buns) is tender and aromatic! Our all time favourite and definitely their most popular dish. You must give it a try!

Place is rather rundown and looks dated. Tables and utensils are not very clean. Staff are also rather unattentive. Food looks dated as well and rather oily, taste is average but price is not that cheap.

The Kong bak pau is still just as good considering the last I dine here was about 20 years ago.

Really appreciate and thankful to Westlake for their service and accountability to call us the very moment Grab driver cancelled our order when the food is supposed to be delivered instead. The food was cooked and in their restaurant, waiting to be delivered. Our kids were hungry and waiting to eat. Was very grateful that Zhiyang offered to check with us and volunteered to deliver to us instead due to the last min changes. Will definitely check out their online delivery next time other than our other in person visits in their shop that we usually do. Thanks again!! Food awesome as usual. Kids love their noodles and corn soup. Well known for the Kong bak buns^^ We especially like to eat when in shop staying nearby for 4 years😁

Westlake Restaurant has been around for decades; I remember visiting with my family when I was a boy. Their signature dishes were Braised Pork with Mantou (Kong Bak Pao) and Hot and Sour Soup. The Braised Pork was superb, the gravy was excellent, the pork was a mix of fatty and lean meat and very tender, and when eaten together with the steam buns, was heavenly. However, the Hot and Sour Soup was disappointing, as it was neither spicy hot nor sour. The French Beans were nice and flavourful. The service was efficient and fast. This is still one of the best places to go for braised pork, but skip the soup.

The braised pork bun is really legendary - thick meat and viscous black sauce infused with garlic. The best I would say 👍👍 The Gong Bao style chicken is fantastic as the cook managed to bring out the essential gong bao taste. Sambal Kangkung is well cooked and tender. Salt & Pepper fried chicken is like home cooked fried chicken but my boys are too used to prawn paste chicken and didn't give it high ratings. Xiao long bao is dry with little soup.. maybe that's Westlake version which we find not satisfying.

Recently ordered the Braised Pork Bun take away. Despite past experiences and raving reviews on the thick slices. The bun is thick and fresh. The pork is sliced too thin.

My family has been coming to West Lake for years, drawn by their legendary kong ba pao (braised pork buns). The taste hasn't wavered despite their long tenure, making it a must-order dish. The melt-in-your-mouth pork nestled in fluffy pau is simply divine, worth a visit even on its own. But Westlake's delights extend beyond the kong ba pao. Their claypot tofu is another star attraction, simmered to perfection in a flavourful broth. For a meaty treat, the claypot beef brisket steals the show. Tender, juicy beef paired with a rich sauce and sweet carrots creates a hearty and unforgettable experience. Don't miss the sambal French beans, a vibrant side dish with a satisfying kick. Whether it's a family gathering or a casual meal with friends, Westlake consistently delivers. The warm atmosphere and friendly service make it a cosy haven for delicious Chinese comfort food. You won't leave disappointed, and you might just find yourself starting a new family tradition.

Most of the dishes were above average except for the Cod Fish which was definitely overpriced. Ordered the large quantity at $96++ & got 2 thin slices of fish. See the photos. I know Cod fish is expensive but $48++ per piece??? That’s ridiculous.

👍👍 My favourite restaurant ever. Just thought I'd drop a review! Both food and service were impeccable as always, and recommended dishes were delicious! 😐 Attracted by its high rate on the map and came here for dinner. And it has 1 for 1 on Tuesday night. However, I am not into Mexican food. 👍 Came here on a weekday evening thus, there werent any crowd and food was served promptly. I ordered the signature original pork ribs and rlly liked it, the meat was so tender and easy to eat.
