I recently visited this museum dedicated to the Peranakan culture, hoping to gain insight into their history and heritage. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed with the lack of detailed information provided, which could easily be found on Wikipedia. The exhibits seemed to perpetuate stereotypes by focusing solely on ornate silk textiles and porcelain, failing to present a nuanced picture of Peranakan culture. I would suggest a complete overhaul of the museum's design and content to better serve the public.

The newly refreshed 3-storey Peranakan Museum holds brand-new permanent galleries presenting exceptional objects from Peranakan material culture, as well as a more contemporary exhibition design and an enhanced museum visitor experience. An excellent way to spend your weekend in town.

Free to visit for Singaporeans and PR. Foreigners or tourists need to pay $12 to enter. Very nice place exhibiting many exquisite artifacts of peranakan rich culture. Great for photography shooting.

Peranakan Museum Get to know Singapore’s vibrant Peranakan community and history at this top-notch museum, filled with fine artefacts and fun exhibits. It’s safe to say that the Peranakan Museum is the go-to destination for Peranakan heritage and culture. It houses what is reputedly the world’s finest collection of Peranakan artefacts – such as jewellery, furniture and textiles – in 10 permanent galleries over three floors.

The museum has been refurbished and reopened in February 2023. It looks as though there may be more rooms to come. Three levels of interesting displays. If you like learning about other ethnic groups and cultures, then you will enjoy this air-conditioned experience. I personally loved it.

This museum has reopened after extensive renovations. It has a great display of Peranakan clothes, furniture, tableware, wedding outfits and jewellery. It is a smallish museum that will take just one morning to cover. I would suggest they put in some exhibits with audio sounds of how Peranakan speak as that was missing. Also the gift shop really needs to be drastically improved as the jewellery there does not appear connected to the Peranakan culture. There should be a shop to sell more Peranakan clothes, snacks, etc. We walked to the Adelphi building where there is a Peranakan clothes shop to buy some kebayas.

Do pay a visit this week as there is an open invitation for visitors experiencing the night festival. No tickets required. There is an event at the ground floor for kids or adults interested to do embroidery and you get to bring your design home. What a treat! The museum is divided to 3 floors. Top floor is where clothes are featured followed by home furnishings at the 2nd floor. I am amazed with the overall museum concept.

The effort put in by the museum and the guides to preserve and appreciate, as well as teach about the Peranakan culture is something very admirable. The Peranakan who visit this museum will feel a strong sense of identity and those who are not Peranakan will truly have the opportunity to stop and understand what their culture is all about, its origins and practices. There is even a photo booth section where people can try out Peranakan clothing and take beautiful pictures. 5/5 worth a visit!

Interesting how you get a free tour around the museum if you're the first 15 there! Went there with the students at work. The guide was a volunteer and we were really honoured to have her as our very detailed guide, who introduced us to all the exhibitions and works. Would really recommend and go again!

Nicely curated little museum. I was last here a few years ago and the exhibits have changed, meriting another visit. Enjoyed the video on heritage Peranakan recipes. Appreciated that it was free for Singaporeans.

Holds local and regional significance showing the lives, traditions and culture of the peranakan people. Has many showrooms showing parts of everyday life, household living and weddings. Would highly recommend for people interested in South East Asian an Asian history/culture.

Small museum but lots of interesting exhibits for those who want to trace the root of the Peranakan people. This museum is housed in a beautiful old building which was formally a school.

Peranakan Museeum reopens with a refresh exhibits after 4 years of renovation. While it is a great place to learn about Peranakan Heritage, it was lacking in interactive displays as well as the use of modern technology for visuals displays. This place would be more suitable for teens and adults.

Lovely refurbished museum! Interesting and educational ! My favourite is actually the stairwell with the colourful lanterns ! What it needs is a nice Peranakan cafe or restaurant ! The gift shop downstairs was rather boring,

Lovely museum showcasing the many aspects of the Peranakans. While it's a bit small, many of the exhibits are quite beautiful. The fabulous clothes, furniture, utensils and artwork on display are awesome. Curiously, there's no display of any Peranakan tiles, but that doesn't diminish the splendor of the exhibition. This is a wonderful place to beat the heat and find out more about the Peranakan culture. Free admission to citizens.

Recommend to head to the Philatelic museum BEFORE the Peranakan museum if you want to see both (Philatelic closes earlier). It's free entry for Singaporeans/PRs, and tells you so much history no history books share in social studies. I believe they have cordoned some areas of the museum too because it felt the showcases were limited. Nonetheless great cultural exposure of SEA's Peranakan history.

This museum is old-fashioned in a good way. A small and pleasant museum with amazing and very helpful people working there. You should be interested in culture and anthropology to get the most out of your visit to this museum. The museum is entirely dedicated to the people of Singapore coming from diverse cultures.

On first floor it has interactive screen, it's so fun to play with 😆 I love the fashion section most, so many clothes and shoes it's so interesting!! From this museum I got to know more about peranakan, there's arab and india peranakan too, how diverse it is. Ah and point plus it has free charging station and locker!

Exciting times, this weekend, 17-19 Feb, when the museum has finally re-opened after a four-year renovation. The new contents have included other peranakan communities, namely chetty memakai, Arabs, and eurasians. This has enriched, and given depth to the multi-dimensions of the blend of cultures in Singapore. Beautiful interiors with lanterns hang in the atrium by a local designer Sam Lo. Stunningly displayed artifacts and historical objects from the national collections and local lenders. To me, the 3rd floor is the most interesting where they display textiles, fashion and jewellery. This museum is the one you should not miss when visiting Singapore.

Very recommended museum in Singapore. Especially with your children. It is very well renovated and beautifully curated. Interactions are kids friendly, such a nice way to learn about Peranakan origins, culture, lifestyle, food, designs and crafts. You may need about 1hr30 to visit the museum. Seams like they are preparing new rooms to be opened soon. I came, I saw, I learned ! Thanks to the people behind the scene.

I loved it. There were so many interesting and ornate exhibits beautifully lit to bring out the best in them. So many of them are unique to this region of SEA too. We had a really good guide at the museum too. She gave us lots of interesting information and cool backstories about where some of the exhibits are from. Thanks!

Peranakan Museum is located in a beautiful building, presenting cross-cultural art of the Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia. The exhibition throughout the museum displays one of the finest & most comprehensive public collections of Peranakan objects. It’s recently renovated & has brand new permanent galleries presenting items from Peranakan culture plus a modern exhibition design & a small museum shop. You can take part in works of contemporary art, fashion, design & craft, by local & regional artists, craftsmen & designers. The museum has three floors & through the exhibition you get a multifaceted experience & answer to what Peranakan culture means. Fantastic colors, in pastels & charming interiors. Kind & helpful staff. A refreshing experience just a short walk from the busy streets of Singapore.

As a Peranakan myself, the museum has many significance for me. As people always say “ always know your roots”. The museum will show you artifacts of true Peranakan people who live and made the culture. It is a people museum.. Peranakan people contributes their artifacts to show others who the straits chinese are and our culture.

A really nice and enjoyable museum about Peranakan (Straits Settlers of Chinese origin) culture and traditional way of life. All the clothes, furniture etc were really interesting and the signs helped me understand the significance of each artefact. The museum will probably take about a couple of hours if you want to see everything.

Peranakan Museum is about to close at the end of March for an overhaul and it's about time. Its exhibits are tiring and lacking fizz. Same exhibition day in and out over so many years. Same cautious security guards who are intent to ensure that you don't stray out of line, lest the exhibits come to life. Hope the new museum will be more dynamic, featuring different dynamics at various points.

  • 5/5 Natrila F. 5 years ago on Google
A nice place to learn about Peranakan history. The place is so interactive, they provide you a sheet of paper to be completed with stamps that you'd find along the museum. However when I went here, some of the stamp machines are broken. Nevertheless, this museum provides you a complete lifestyle (and even lifecycle since there is a death section) of Peranakan.

  • 4/5 Yu Bin L. 5 years ago on Google
Looks small on the outside, but the museum is actually pretty big! I loved the "Family treasures" activity, where you are encouraged to collect stamps from various exhibits.

Local Singaporean get free entry! Start from level 1 then subsequently visit the exhibits from top floor and work your way down. It would be great if you can get someone knowledgeable to explain, because you're gonna be overloaded with information.

Located near the city center, there are many transport option to reach this place, from taxi to busses. There is also a small museum shop just outside the main door. A lot of things to see there. I used to think that I knew almost evrything about peranakans but visiting the museum really opened my eyes. Definitely a place to visit again and regret dragging my visit to there so long. Although I have to say that the musuem is quite small and doesn't have a vintage feel to it if that's what you're looking for. The place is extremely clean and modern. Be ready to bring at least a few hundreds there if you want to buy a souvenir back home. A small beaded pouch alone cost S$80! The shops are quite cramped and there's hardly any space to walk around as well.

After 4 long years of renovation, the Peranakan Museum is finally re-open. The place looks clean, modern, and welcoming. There is a good collection of the Peranakan heritage. A suggestion to the museum is that in the background, you can play some traditional Peranakan music, a recording of someone narrating about the Peranakan heritage, or even some modern digital virtual interaction. These will make the place more lively and attract more crowd. Well done, and I hope to see more exciting exhibits or related events held there. Singaporean / PR are free to enter. Tourists will have to pay a fee of $12 (Adult) / $8 (Student/Elder).

Went during reopening weekend and spent a few hours here! Many oral history stories from Peranakan of all walks of life - but it can get a bit annoying when young children raise their hands to change the video midway (they have a sensor system for you to change the video when you’re done watching…) it’s also not too interactive, kids may be bored, more for adults

  • 3/5 Benoit L. 1 year ago on Google
Lovely museum, and some exceptional pieces (The textiles! The diamonds!). Overall still feels like the collection is work in progress and explanations sometimes unclear. Hand hovering over some of the screens for explanation does not work well and can be frustrating.

The Peranakan Museum reopened it's doors after four years of renovation, and it was certainly refreshing. It continues to tell the stories of the Peranakan community in Singapore through the items depicting lifestyle and culture. There were furniture with intricate designs, exquisite kitchenware, clothing with fine embroidery, and more.

This building used to be where Tao Nan Primary was founded. It is now nicely renovated and filled with great artefacts, showing the rich Peranakan culture. It is not a big place so if you tour about slowly, it will take about 1.5hour. Worth a visit if you want to understand more about Peranakan history and culture.

An indepth immersion into the diversity of the Peranakan community is here at the museum. For us the 'crown jewel' is the exhibited accessories on the 3rd floor, for a true reflection of the "crazy rich asians".

Amazing museum, very well orginised. There is a tour guide there, and it’s a must. The guide was super cool and shared stories from his own experience. Very quick excursion, just one hour, but honestly - for me the timing is perfect cause it doesn’t exhaust you:) after the excursion you can walk by yourself. Highly recommend for all visits and those who live in Singapore.

I had a fantastic experience at the Peranakan Museum! For just 12 SGD, I got to explore a treasure trove of artifacts from incredibly wealthy and generous Peranakan families. What truly made the visit exceptional was the 2pm Saturday tour guide. Not only was he incredibly informative, but his sense of humor added an enjoyable twist to the experience. His introduction breathed life into the history of the Peranakan culture. I highly recommend taking a tour with one of their guides – it truly enhances your understanding and appreciation of this remarkable museum. Don't miss out on this gem!

Peranakans are materially and historically rich eh. So enlightening to explore their roots intertwined throughout Singaoore's history through the extensive collection of pottery, carved altar, cloths, fashion, and other artistic forms scattered throughout the beautiful 3-storey museum! The museum's architecture is so beautifully carved, with each room highlighting specific elements of peranakan culture- food, cloths, funerals, pottery, etc. How they came about is not a really distinct boundary. What defines a peranakan? What are they doing now? History tells you that they actually flourished during WWII as they can translate in English for the colonisers and the laymen, and emphasised on education. It's really amazing to see the museum FLEX on us by displaying such amounts of wealth. Any questions you may have are enhanced by museum staff and interviews with today's peranakans'. I had so many which were answered by the helpful staff at the jewellery shop. She says that anyone in Singapore technically can be a peranakan, so I can be one too? :) They are so welcoming and helpful. A peranakan friend also mentioned visiting "The Intan", a private museum!

This is a recently opened museum in Singapore and they also have guided tours, which is very informative. The place looks clean and well-kept.
