Saw this place from a friend's picture and instantly I knew I wanted to go there for my PWS! We were greeted with warm hospitality since our first recce visit by the owner, Clarence. He did not ask for a deposit nor any reservation fees when we asked to book his place for our shoot. Clarence was very accomodating to our needs, given that our PWS took place during the rainy season these few weeks. He was flexible in the timing for us to come over in view of the unpredictable weather conditions and we had to replan some of our itinerary last minute. He was ready to welcome us when we reached, and while we were there and touching up on our makeup etc, he voluntarily helped us to prepare tea and setup the utensils and kueh (which we brought over). He also initiated to share with my PG on some of the nice spots for photography. During the shoot, he too, helped us to snap some pictures and send it to us thereafter. We were more than thankful and grateful to have met Clarence and have his place for our PWS, which we both loved it alot! It was definitely one of the highlight venue for the day which our PG was also very impressed with the overall ambience. After the shoot, we received many enquiries on this place too:)) We were more than satisfied that we made the right choice for picking this place.

Excellent place to experience Peranakan culture and local food. Very patient and informative beading season conducted by Angeline Kong who is also a Nyonya where she shares her family stories and photos. Excellent food and knowledge sharing. Love the sarong kebaya wearing experience. They took great photos and share it almost immediately via whatsapp. It was truly an enjoyable session where I learnt a new skill and made many new friends!

Stepping into Straits Enclave is like a step back into history. Housed in an old shophouse, the cozy place is awash with authentic Peranakan collectibles and antiques. Not to mention the awesome food - we had very lemak Laksa cooked from scratch by the host. Great place to host private gatherings over a meal!

The Peranakan beading course was a great way to learn more about this dying art and the Peranakan traditions in general. Great teacher, cosy place. My pair of beaded shoes is the best souvenir I could possibly bring from Singapore!

This is an amazing hidden gem!! Must visit if you like to know more about Peranakan (straits ppl) culture. Clarence was very hospitable and gave us a crash course on history lesson on origin of peranakan and a passed on lots of cultural knowledge in the session. The furniture and items in the space were beautiful and very well maintained. Clarence mentioned they run painting and beading workshop once a month. Check their fb page if anyone interested to join those classes. We did a photo session with him- Clarence was very accomodating and helpful with lighting and pose to capture the best views. The location of straits enclave is great with lots of good restaurants. Highly recommend a visit. Would love to come back to do the workshop.

(Translated by Google) When you come to Singapore, there are not only well-known attractions such as Merlion or Sentosa. Nyonya culture is also a unique culture of Singapore and Malaysia. In Joo Chiat, you can experience traditional Nyonya architecture and special snacks. Straits Enclave can be said to be a small museum in Joo Chiat where Nyonya culture is preserved. The owner's enthusiasm for Nyonya culture can be seen in the small details of the exterior of the building. Entering the museum seems to have entered another world, you are interested in history and culture, or the collection of antiquities. This is a place worthy of your tasting. The host will also hold Nyonya cultural tea parties and gourmet feasts from time to time. Upon entering the premise, it honestly felt like time travel ensued and brought back the 1900s amidst the astounding array of magnificent antiques depicting the richness of peranakan culture - exquisite porcelain wares/colourful traditional costumes/prized antique furniture/ vintage artefacts/etc. make up the delightful private collection offering breadth & depth to enchant both laymen & enthusiasts alike. What is also clearly evident is the level of attention to detail devoted to the creation of such a passionate heritage space: while there is always a display to pique one's interest at every corner, the exhibits never once felt cluttered or mundane. For my next visit, I'm looking to partake in a gastronomical journey with the affable resident chef and experience authentic peranakan cuisine in the cosy setting of this hidden gem - truly a unique & remarkable cultural adventure in Singapore.

Went for an embroidery workshop organised by Straits Enclave and thoroughly enjoyed myself! Would definitely sign up for another crafts workshop at Straits Enclave!! If you're someone who loves the Peranakan culture, do come by or take opportunities of workshops held there to visit the place. It's truly fascinating to see a traditional Peranakan house kept in such pristine condition - it felt so surreal yet homey at the same time. Thank you, Clarence, for organising such wonderful workshops and keeping the Peranakan culture alive :)

Last Saturday 31 Oct 2020, my husband & I attended Peranakan beading workshop & we had a memorable & enjoyable time learning Peranakan beading from Ms Angeline Kong who is beading expert. Angeline also spent some time to give us an understanding the roots of the Peranakan community and the beauty of their heritage. Under her patience guidance, we also learn & appreciate new skills on Peranakan beading. On top of that, Mr Clarence Chia also prepare yummy & authentic Chinese chicken rice for our lunch, and some Peranakan kuehs for our afternoon tea. This is an eye-opening experience for anyone who is interested to learn/appreciate new skills, & to have an understanding Peranakan’s community.

I had such an enjoyable time learning beadwork at Straits Enclave. Good, comprehensive introduction to peranakan heritage and a very heartwarming sharing by Angeline about her personal experiences of being a nyonya and also her beading journey. She has a sincere passion for sharing beadwork skills with anyone who is willing to learn. The venue is beautiful, you will be surrounded by gorgeous vintage/antique nyonya porcelain pieces; a feast for the eyes I am definitely looking forward to the advanced beading class!

The shop house painting workshop was such a wonderfully rich experience led by such knowledgeable and passionate hosts. The rich sharing of Peranakan heritage, Peranakan snacks and tea with an opportunity to dress in Peranakan traditional clothing inside a traditional Peranakan shophouse with it's Peranakan owner Baba Chia was just fabulous. More than our expectations. The information and history was shared lovingly by Baba Chia about Shophouses in Singapore all within a beautifully rich local Peranakan heritage area with the added opportunity of visiting, drawing and painting these architecturally beautiful and impressive buildings with Kathleen Ng was indeed a privilege and a special learning experience. The guidance and support given to draw and paint your chosen shop house by Kat, was so supportive, allowing everyone at all levels of experience to create a lovely painting to take home as a memory of our day together. Thank you so much. We will be sure to look into other Straits Enclave experiences.

Shophouse drawing& watercolor class: Out of all the cultural experiences I booked while in Singapore this was my favorite. Not only did I learn about peranakan culture and architecture, I came home with a lovely painting, cute pics of me in a nonya outfit, and I can still taste the beautiful kuih made by their aunty. Being in their beautiful heritage house was a treat! Would totally recommend! I’ll be back for another class in my next visit.

What a wonderful day learning about the Peranakan Culture and experiencing delicious chicken rice for lunch, made by our host Clarance. The high light of the day was being shown the exquisite beaded shoes, and learning how to do it with our talented Teacher Ms Angelene - fair challenge if you’ve never done any beading before. It was a neat invitation to register for the beading workshop in facebook and least expected is that I will need to travel to Joo Chiat, a place that I will not imagine myself to be there. Straits Enclave was tucked in the narrow roads in the midst of Joo Chiat. Trust me, I really google to travel there. I was lead to this museum, lost in the flight of time that brought us back to the Peranakan Era. Actually, I am more interested in the workshop than the museum itself at first. But when seated, I could not but beamed at the collection they have. Peranakan wall tiles, the pillar bed amongst the rest. 麻雀虽小,五脏俱全. We had flavourful chicken rice as lunch and delectable kuehs for refreshments. Day ended with a bring home project and memories tucked in the pocket. Thanks Clarence (owner) and Angeline (trainer).

Bead by bead class Big thanks to Clarence owner of Straits Enclave and collector of peranakan cultural pieces. Prior to starting the beading class, he proceeded to guide us through the layout of the house and history each piece. I also appreciate that they adapted the chicken rice meal for lunch as I am not able to take rice. The 3-tier afternoon tea Kueh selection was also divine. The beading workshop hosted by Angeline gave us a taste of the intricate work needed to make peranakan beaded slippers. You really get to know how passionate she is about preserving the culture and passing it on to others. I do suggest for anyone joining to have some experience with sewing/embroidery first.

Ensconced in the cosy street of Joo Chiat, my friends and I chanced upon this gem of a place where Clarence kindly brought us down the memory lane of his rich Peranakan ancestry. It was followed by a sumptuous spread of all our favourite Peranakan kueh ranging from Kueh Pie Tee to the feast of colours you see in the picture. He was very kind to help us with a surprise birthday celebration too. We were beaming from both the wonderful catch-up we had in such a lovely ambience and the authentic dishes. Will highly recommend the concept to all family, friends and tourists who are looking for a nostalgic trip down Peranakan history paired with impeccable hospitality. ❤️

10/10 would recommend 👍✌️ Had a great time learning about Peranakan history, it’s origins, the garments, and little nuances of how to wear them. Of course the beading was the highlight. Angeline was patient, energetic and passionate about teaching us the beading techniques. They provided us with our own beading set and pattern to get started, got dressed in traditional outfits provided by them, and even had delicious kuehs and tea along the way. Very relaxed and fun environment to learn. Also have to add that the place itself - their house and all the well preserved antiques was stunning to see. Clarence and his wife were also great hosts and helped us take many photos along the way. Oh they also provide advances course for those who wanna become real pros

Clarence was very warm and welcoming while giving us historical insights on Peranakan culture and our lovely art teacher, Kat was patient with us and detailed in her instructions. I attended a workshop today, hosted by @straits_enclave, taught by artist @katgeo.art. For 45 mins, we sat thru an informative presentation about the Peranakans, their unique architecture, and then visited the nearby Peranakan houses to take photographs of the buildings. Back in the studio, we were guided to sketch, ink & paint, while enjoying traditional Peranakan desserts, and even had the chance to try on the sarong kebaya costumes. I finished my painting within 3 hours. A truly enjoyable afternoon spent with sister & nieces. Highly recommend! The Straits Enclave is a private museum, filled with beautiful artifacts, items of clothing, furniture, antique household items of Peranakan origin. An inspiring event space that can seat 20.

I attended the Peranakan heritage house sketching and painting workshop and had such a wonderful time getting to know the Peranakan culture better. We learned about its history and the unique characteristics of the Peranakan houses. We went to Koon Seng Rd, which is a short walk away from Straits Enclave, to explore the houses and to pick out the designs we would like to include in our sketches. Then we spent the rest of the time learning how to sketch and paint taught by teacher Kathleen. Kueh and tea were also being served during the workshop and we also got to wear the baju for a complete Peranakan experience. The overall experience was fantastic and I would love to come back to Straits Enclave to attend another workshop in my next visit to SG!
