We
had
booked
this
hostel
several
months
in
advance.
However,
upon
our
arrival
at
7
pm
this
week,
the
hostel
staff
informed
us
that
our
room
was
under
maintenance,
rendering
check-in
unavailable.
There
was
no
prior
notification
provided
to
us.
The
hostel
suggested
we
check
in
at
another
hotel
they
had
arranged
for
us,
and
they
would
cover
the
price
difference.
On
the
surface,
this
seemed
like
an
upgrade
from
a
hostel
to
a
hotel,
but
our
excitement
faded
when
we
read
reviews
about
the
hotel,
specifically,
HOTEL
MANHATTAN,
which
were
downright
terrible
and
horrifying.

Continuing
our
story,
we
inquired
if
the
hostel
could
offer
an
alternative
stay
or
if
we
could
pay
to
upgrade
our
room,
but
the
answer
was
a
flat
'no.'
The
reason
given
for
the
unavailability
of
our
room
was
a
malfunctioning
toilet.
We
were
willing
to
use
a
common
toilet
but
were
met
with
rejection.
While
the
hostel
kept
refusing
our
requests,
they
were
allowing
other
customers
to
check
in.
When
we
questioned
this
apparent
double
standard,
the
hostel
claimed
that
only
two
rooms
were
affected,
and
both
of
us
are
Asian.
So
I
guess
our
ethnicity
played
a
role
in
their
decision.
Regrettably,
we
had
no
choice
but
to
accept
their
offer
as
it
was
already
7:40
pm,
and
finding
last-minute
accommodation
would
have
cost
us
four
to
five
times
the
original
price.
