As an Archaeology student, I hate giving museums low ratings as I believe everyone should go to them and attend them but the Art & History museum unfortunately needs work. I do recommend people still go as there were lots of cool objects but if you only have a few days in Brussels, spend your time elsewhere. Museum Organisation: The organisation of the museum was unfortunately poor. I believe this could be very easily corrected which in my opinion would skyrocket the museum to a 5 star. If the museum would like more communication on this I would happily discuss my ideas if they reached out. Firstly, I felt so lost there were no maps (if there were I couldn't find them) and the sign posts were few and far between. I had no idea which exhibits were where and how to find them. The museum was also so empty which is sometimes nice but there were hardly any staff. The only staff we saw were people checking tickets on entry. This museum would greatly benefit from having staff scattered around in exhibits that you could ask questions to or ask for directions, without the museum just feels soulless. Also the signage was only in Dutch and French. I know very limited Dutch and even less French so didn't feel like I could properly engage with the items. I was even using Google translate to translate signs into English so I could learn more. I did not know the museum was only in Dutch and French when I decided to visit so this was a shock once I walked into the first exhibition. This would take a bit of time to obviously add but would make it so much more accessible for tourists or once again making an purchasable booklet (with a map)which at least discusses the highlights in English, I would easily have paid €5 for a souvenir guidebook. Artefacts and Display: I hate how bad the organisation was as it really has disappointed me as this museum has AMAZING POTENTIAL. The range of artefacts they have spanning so much of time is sensational. Some exhibits are amazingly put together and if it had better accessibility (maps and language) it would easily be a perfect exhibit. I particularly enjoyed how the prehistory section had replica models as they were so immersive. I also appreciated the portrayal of human remains in the basement section with them being in situ replica with their original findings. While it is a difficult topic to address if museums should show human remains this is definitely a good way of doing so and is easily avoidable if people don't want to see skeletons (however maybe have a warning sign). No exhibition really stood out as being bad however as mentioned the language issues being resolved would greatly increase the accessibility and some were easily better than others, the museum needs to be more cohesive. Also unfortunately some exhibits were closed due to renovations which I do not feel were adequately informed about on the website. Location: The location is pretty cool being next to the amazing Arc and the building itself is amazing. However, it is a bit of a trek from the centre but the underground is relatively easy to navigate so don't let it put you off it out want to visit! Pricing: I paid a student price of €4 which is good value for money and the €10 standard entry is pretty decent for a museum. I would have probably felt annoyed paying anymore than I did due to my inability to fully engage. Atmosphere: It was only about 20 degrees when we visited and not overly sunny but wow was it warm in there. The museum could greatly benefit from some form of ventilation. Conclusion: I obviously had a lot of thoughts about this museum which I needed to share as I think they will benefit from these points. Basically a 5 star museum trapped in a 3 star mid rating by only itself.

Great museum in Brussels to discover art and history. It is quiet and you can walk around without getting lots of people taking pictures. It's a complete museum with different periods in time. Would definitely go when you have some free time. Free entrance till 18 :)

What a collection... First of all: one visit is absolutely not enough! You can see almost everything in one visit but after 2 hours exploring you will lose your attention and it gets ineffective. The museum has collected thousands of exhibits from all possible eras and civilizations. Some of them are very impressive. All you need is patience and strong legs. And be careful, you risk missing entire sectors if you don't peek everywhere! Enjoy

Oct. 2023: visit to oerlanejt collection of the museum; the parts re the Americas and the Far East are tremendous !! The Roman mosaics are very beautiful as well!

The museum is absolutely huge and very rich in exhibits. Needs more than 2 hours for a basic visit. There is archeology, history and art, some about Belgium some about far away places.

A lot of interesting things to see in a lovely building, with many other museums close by. Unfortunately, many of the displays are not translated into English which is unfortunate for international audiences but both French and Dutch is available.

There are some interesting collections but in general this museum is not that interesting, as I've expected. Some of the rooms smell quite unpleasant, some windows/showcases are empty, others lack labeling. In general, the museum is not very suitable for English speaking guests (unless you take an audio guide, which we didn't do and we were sorry) because there's no labels in English... at all! It's a nice place for a few hours (you need at least 2.5 hours to barely go through all the collections) during your weekend but I wouldn't say that it's a must.

Very interesting musiem with archiological artifacts. A collection from Egypt, Greece, Roma, South and North America, Asia. Creepy tombs with bones under glass. Quite cold inside to visit in winter

A collection of collections, this museum is an interesting polythematic exhibition of great art from a variety of cultures and eras. From Egyptian to Pre-Colombian to Belgian Art Nouveau, there’s a bit of everything in here. The museum is quite large and its temporary exhibitions are always noteworthy.

If you can spare at least 2 hours, this museum is a must. Although the roman and Egyptian era can use some redesign, the other parts of the museum are already up to date. The building itself is also quite interesting and serves from time to time as an extra. You can really enjoy all kind of era's, going from the early settlements, roman, Egyptian, Mideavel, renaissance, etc. Also artifacts from cultures allover the world. And for fans of Tintin, it houses the mumie of rascar capac and the one eared statue.

Gorgeous museum with a lot of history, both for the building, the collections and its surroundings. Some exhibitions are dated and in some places the museum needs a bit of TLC, but it doesn't make visiting it any less worthwhile. We visited purely for the temporary Inca Textile expo, which was gorgeous. All objects had been cleverly given a place and there were some interactive spaces for kods as well. In the permanent exhibitions, especially liked the medieval carpets (which Brussels used to be famous for) and the massive mosaic and columns in the Roman Hall.

Arrived with the intention of seeing just the Art Nouveau and Art Deco collection. Ended up taking in room after room full of intricate tapestries, elaborate gothic altarpieces, ancient globes, clocks, and compasses, Buddhas and Hindu deities, exquisite Indonesian puppets, artefacts from early Roman and Merovingian civilisations. And not to mention the very beautiful Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces which make up the Magasin Wolfers. There was actually much, much more which unfortunately due to time constraints remained undiscovered on this visit. The building is vast but the signage leaves a lot to be desired and the museum plan which you receive at the entrance is confusing as well. This is a bit annoying if you are trying to find something in particular. The staff on duty are very friendly though and they will help where they can. Exhibits are labelled in French and Dutch but hardly at all in English, unfortunately.

This architectural design of this building is a true masterpiece. Amazing museum to visit with your kids or to even visit all by yourself 😉 Good to know: lockers available where you can stock your personal stuff and coats.

The art and history museum in Brussels is one of the largest museums in Europe!! It is located in the park of Cinquantenaire. In this museum you can see archaeological artefacts from the Belgian area from the prehistory to the Merovingian period. We really enjoyed the Russian collection and the collection of the airplanes from the WWII. The view from the roof of the museum is amazing and you could take some awesome pictures there!!! Highly recommended 😊😊

Probably not the best Art & History museum in the world, however, temporary exhibitions are really good. Check on their website and book in advance, if possible. The building where the museum is installed is historically rich and full of Instagram-worthy pics. Truly beautiful interiors, perfect for your Instagram post. Salut

We travelled back in time during our visit to this museum. It is very well organized. Keep in mind that you need around 3 to four hours to visit all different sections since the museum is big and there is a lot to see. We ended our visit by going to the roof to see the amazing view of Brussels. You can also combine your visit with other two neighboring museums and get a discounted price for all three but we didn’t have the time to do so. The museum also offers free lockers. The only missing element is the audio. It needs to be reintroduced for a wholesome experience.

A neglected building that has seen better days; steps leading to entrance has rubbish and grass growing out of the cracks, plaster work inside needs attention + a lot of display cases appears to be from the 1930s. Generally poor curation. That having been said, the building contains some remarkable material, and because of this is worth a visit. Note particularly the Ethnic American collection - one of the largest in Europe. Note also that display notes are only in Dutch and French.

(Translated by Google) Large collection but could be presented less boring Positive: - The staff at the entrance were friendly and helpful. - Large collection. Points for improvement: - Pay more attention to the highlights of the collection. - Use more imagination for the presentation of the collection, and more multimedia. The entrance to Rome, for example, was already a step in the right direction: a model and a film. Unfortunately, the film was always circulating in French. I know there is a button for the selection of the language of the film, but with Corona I prefer not to touch it. That is why it is better to do the audio loop alternately in another language NL-FR-EN-NL-FR -... - As suggested: use more audio (eg medieval banquet sounds, ...), more video, more variety. Decorate the rooms more, in the theme of the room (instead of bare walls). For example, do more with that mummy from Tintin. Use those opportunities. - Some rooms were closed for no reason. Corona? Indicate the reason to the visitor. - The visit actually got a bit boring and monotonous in the long run. - The entrance to the museum could be much clearer. I have been to the Cinquantenaire several times in the past months and passed along that side, but I had no inkling that there was the entrance to A&H museum! This may (should!) Draw the attention of unsuspecting passers-by (eg flags on the outside). - I visited the museum near closing time (3 - 5 pm), because I thought it would be quiet. On the contrary, because security people were at one point in a group (4 to 8 people) talking LOUD at the back of each room. I understand that they have to 'close off' every room, but I experienced this noise as VERY annoying. - Based on the name of the museum I thought I saw more 'Arts' (in the traditional sense: paintings, etc.) but I thought the objects were mainly historical ('History'). Not a problem in itself, but a bit misleading. - It would be useful, for example, to announce 15 minutes in advance that the museum will close instead of being 'surprised' when the time comes.

Impressive museum of Belgian art and history (tapestries, glasswork, stone work, magnificent hall for Art Noveau). It also has a great collection of items from Americas and South East Asia. You would need at least 2-3 hours to visit the museum properly. Gift shop is also worth a visit. Some original gifts could be found there.

We spent 3 hours here, amazed by the space and the many wonderful exhibitions. The 3-star rating comes down to a couple of minor things: - No airconditioning - No signing/information in English - A lot of knick-knacks on display (plates, vases, glasses, just things) - Low accessibility: A lot of stairs and walking in circles/returning to the same place

A lot of interesting exhibits in a beautiful building but unfortunately due to renovations, quite a few were shut. The pre history exhibit stole the show with beautiful models and displays. Almost all signs were exclusively in French and Dutch which made it a bit difficult to understand what was on display as I speak neither language, but it was still interesting to look around. Organisation of the museum was a bit odd and unfortunately if there were maps, they weren’t easy to find!

Fantastic museum with a very elaborate and impressive collection. Unfortunately almost nothing is described in English. Perhaps that’s why even though the collection can rival that of the MET or the Art Institute of Chicago, the museum was almost entirely empty when I visited.

Huge collection! Recently renewed dispaly of national archeological finds in the basement is worth the visit. Well presented didactic display of measuring and time keeping instruments in the cluster section. Several rooms being redeveloped with non-European collections. Great museum shop. Like all national museums in Belgium, this one is underfunded and tries hard with poor means. Please support it!

Although an impressive building, the exhibitions lack context and narration. Also if you are an english speaker then you will not be able to follow anything as very little is translated. There is also no step free access anywhere in the building for buggies or those who are unable to walk.

Alles is nogal functioneel uitgestald. België heeft zoveel betere voorbeelden van hoe je mooi voorwerpen in de kijk zet. Daar kan men hier nog wat van leren. Ook suppoosten mogen wel een opfrissertje hebben... beetje ingekakt zooitje.

(Translated by Google) We made an appointment for 3 p.m. with the sole purpose of visiting the so-called 3D exhibition of the Roman section. We arrive 10 minutes late and are directly garlanded by the cashier. "There is a lot to see and you have two hours to see everything! Then you have to clear directly". Well, once past the ministerial reception period in the 60s, first observation, there is not a cat in the museum except 3 peeled and 2 shorn. After having done ALL the course imposed in the deserted rooms we finally arrive at the Romans. Screens deactivated and access to characters who tell you what could have been interesting ... prohibited ... So, instead of hitting a security guard every 5 meters who obviously comes from a company which offers discount contracts and which are more static than mummies ... Why not dinamiser all this by making this staff useful? Entrust him with the tasks of accessing what is interesting by disinfecting touch screens etc. (even supermarkets do this with carts ..). In my opinion the management of this museum with faded glory is old-fashioned and dusty like the centuries gone by. Put screens with explanatory films on the whole route. This will make your museum more interesting. For communication it is frankly zero. Let's go ... stand up the dead! Positive point, some beautiful collections are well developed. Yes I know, you do what you can. But the Covid 19 is no excuse.

Don't go with a pushchair until Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. No elevators working (which is the case in all museums), but unlike other places they refuse to let you leave the pushchair anywhere to collect at the end of the visit. The exhibits were nice enough in the parts of the museum I could access. The receptionist was rude and unhelpful. The other staff were much nicer. But overall, disappointing compared to the approach of other museums in Brussels.

There are some magnificent items in the collection and the museum is vast but it’s in some serious need of curation and renovation. I cannot fault that they have made the museum ticketed entry only during the aftermath of COVID-19, nor can I fault that there were toilets during the tour of the museum. However, the course that we were sent on was oddly timelined and asked too much of visitors. To go through it, you really need to set aside around 3 hours but there are no descriptions in English (only French and Dutch) and the museum failed to make it an interesting visit. For a museum so big, I would suggest that they curate it so visitors can choose what time in history they would like to see, otherwise you go through a whole course from medieval history to renaissance to Peru to pre-America to Greek and Romans. It has no rhyme or reason. A shame.

This museum is Brussels' answer to the British Museum. It is divided in two wings. The right one as you enter deals with Belgian history and has sections on the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, the Roman era, the Merovingian era, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Modern Times. The tapestries and woodwork from the 15th and 16th centuries are particularly amazing. The left wing has collections from the Americas (Native Americans and Meso America in particular), India, Tibet, China, Korea and Southeast Asia. There are also temporary exhibitions.

The highlight of the museum's permanent collection is surely the exhibition on islamic art and culture. Well organized with additional material available in English and German. That can sadly not be said for the rest of the museum. It is probably not a usual custom to include an English descriptions in countries where there are two main languages. But it is counter-intuitive not to include an international description.

The exhibition 'before time began' is great. The personnel working at the museum is not. I emailed asking specifically about the Oceania section and got the answer that the section was under renovation. Fair enough. I phoned to confirm this and to explain that I was looking at something similar to bring my kindergarten class to as we'd been learning about the continent. I receive the name of an art gallery. It's only through this art gallery that I find out about the 'before time began' (aboriginal art) exhibition at the art & history museum! The excuse I receive? 'I thought you knew about that!' I then email (twice) to make a reservation for my class. No reply. When phoning, they can't help because the woman who takes care of the reservations works from home. Can I make a reservation by phone then? No, it's only via email. I'm still waiting... more than 2 weeks later. I could carry on but the post would become way too lengthy... Bottom line is- beware of incompetent staff! Do your own research, double-check what they tell you.

This is very much underrated hidden gem. Obviously this is no British museum but you see some top notch Nubian arts, a street from a Roman city in Syrian with large-scale mosaics and turtle shell on which first Chinese characters appear. Absolutely worthwhile an afternoon’s time. No AC and minimal English description are the small downsides. Hopefully they can receive some more funding to modernize the exhibitions—current form reminds of archeological museums in Istanbul

As you witness, neither building nor collection are an issue in this @artandhistorymuseumbrussels , it's the way it's marketed (not at all) and run. There's no coherent story, there's no restaurant that draws in people, it's basically a place devoid of people where art is left to die. It's very sad and as a regular I hope I'll see it thrive in my lifetime. This could be the Belgian @vamuseum #artandhistorymuseumbrussels

Decent European collections, but a large portion of it is under renovation. Almost no plaques had an English translation. Was appalled and disgusted by the volume of American indigenous artifacts and the Egyptian exhibition left a sour taste in my mouth. I guess that’s to be expected of most western museums, but still worth noting.
