One of my favorites museum in Antwerpen, one of the ones I really wanted to go and even better I've been there. The mood inside the museum is insane, the colours and the lights are really well placed. The garden in the middle of the museum is amazing as well. The workers are super kind and funny, helped me a lot because I was going in the wrong direction of the exhibition ahah I really recommend to go there.

This place is special. It is an historic place and it is organised as a museum for the industry of printing in combination with the history of Plantin-Moretus family which owned the business. You need 2 hours to tour yourself around and read the information provided. Audio guide highly recommended.

I almost walked past this place without noticing it all, but there were some cool woodcut images on the Building which piqued my interest so I had to go inside. There was no queue, the staff were really helpful and spoke perfect English, it was a mind opening experience and so so beautiful inside that I would highly recommend everyone going pst should pop in! It’s worth the money as you get some free prints and a free audio guide.

This museum is incredibly beautiful. It is located in a 16th-century mansion and features astonishing interiors, furniture, tapestries, and paintings. The spirit of previous generations is palpable throughout the building - you can smell it, feel it, and even hear it. I strongly recommend spending a couple of hours there.

One of the most unique museums I have ever seen. You will see how the old publishing system works and you can try to press print one page of the documents. The building itself is very unique, the wooden floor with leather wall and garden in its center. I have learned a ton from them.

Impressive museum! Located in the preserved house of the printing company, it hosts one of the oldest printing presses in the world, along with the original typesets and tools used by the company. The museum is very well organised and you get to know so much information about the evolution of the press, the processes and history of the Antwerp as well. It's impressive how much impactful was the company and how wide connections it had with the rest of the world, involved in printing materials all over the world but also conducting research! We had 3 hours available but didn't manage to see 9 rooms!! We will visit again!

I had an enchanting experience at the Plantin-Moretus Museum. The meticulously preserved 16th-century printing press and rich history showcased within its walls make it a captivating visit for history enthusiasts. The knowledgeable staff added depth to the tour with insightful anecdotes. The elegant interiors and extensive collection of rare books and prints are a testament to the museum's commitment to preserving cultural heritage. While the overall experience was impressive, a few interactive elements could enhance engagement. Nonetheless, a must-visit for those seeking a journey through the evolution of printing and publishing.

I could not imagine that a printer's legacy could be so impressive. It is thanks to Mr Platin that knowledge was able to spread worldwide in the 16th century. The museum succeeds in presenting the achievements of this epoch in a very interesting way and accompanying them with the explanations of the audio guide. In my opinion the most interesting museum in the city.

This was really amazing. If you're at all interested in the history of book printing, this is a must visit if you're somewhere nearby. Pretty unique focus, very well presented and the staff was super nice.

This is one of the most underrated museums in Belgium. It hosts a unique ensemble of everything related to print, from printing machines through printing matrix to beautiful collection of books. Add to that a vast collection of best Belgian paintings and you will see why it is a place you must visit.

So many books . It is very interesting but a lot of books! Also a little more description of the paintings and books are necessary. I wouldn't go there again but it's worth a visit if you are into arts and history. 5/10 . Also it's focused on the person , I don't like that at all. I'd rather have a nice explanation of the exhibition

The place has a great story and is really authentic, this makes that it is on the UNESCO list twice. Once for the building and once for the museums collection inside. Also a good place to teach your kids about the history of books and science.

One of the more hidden gems of Antwerp. It is both a former city Palace but also one of the places where history was written as one of Europe's most important book printing shops. You can download a museum tour which has quite amusing audio and a tour for kids is available as from 8 year. The buildings still breaths the ancient history and you can witness the ancient book printing presses as they just stopped working yesterday.

I visited this museum without any expectation but it really surprised me how good it was! We got so much information from it and the people who lead you around are so passionated about their work, it was an amazing visit and now I know how much work there was put into books back in the days. Thanks for the great day and definitely would recommend visiting it!

It's a really interesting museum telling the story of one of the first printing houses in Europe. Quite an interesting place if you have a passion about the history. An interrior of the place is the same as it was 200 years ago. Really atmospheric location.

AMAZING museum! Multifaceted but not overwhelming, this museum is about the history of the printing press, of book publishing and books in general, Antwerp history, and also the lives of a few very ambitious businesspeople that made this building into what it is. Add to that quite the collection of paintings by Rubens, a stunning flower garden, a beautifully kept building and a great audiotour to be guided among all the information available. Other highlights: two really old libraries and many many botanical books, atlases, prints... All displayed really well for you to enjoy. Don't miss the illuminated manuscripts they kept for inspiration... Book lovers, business people, plant lovers, art lovers and of course history lovers will have a great time here. There's even someone present to workshop the printing press and many interactive moments for kids. Would recommend 10+ though.

Interesting place to get to know more about the printing/press history in Antwerp. There’s is a nice inner court, I came to try out the printing experience, sadly it wasn’t open when I came. Overall nice museum to visit when you’re in the city.

This was a truly inspiring museum. The building itself is wonderful. Some 400 yrs old and given to the city of Antwerp by the family, with all the printing equipment, furniture, and artworks. It traces the story of the first large-scale printing house in Europe. Started around 1552. Their contribution to the progress of knowledge and education in society was significant. They published Bibles, prayer books, civil documents, humanist philosophy, scientific works, school books, propaganda, and even the very first atlas. I loved it.

A very rare gem of a museum. A must see, even a site of pilgrimage for graphic designers, as this is the birthplace of mass produced books and maps. See the Garamond fonts in their original state and marvel at some lesser known paintings by Rubens. I visited on a Saturday. It can get quite crowded.

I highly recommend this astounding collection of printing artifacts. This unplanned visit became the highlight of our visit to Antwerp. We stayed for hours wandering the halls and were eager to learn more about the family, their peers, and the printing process that lasted centuries. Gorgeous. Educational. Mind-blowing discoveries. Of the 4 of us visiting, 3 of us said this was our favorite activity during our time in the city. A gem in a city of diamonds. 💎

So many gorgeous old printed treasures are displayed here in perfect condition along with the type casts and historical printing presses that helped producing them (two of the oldest surviving!). Bibles, math books, botanical guides, world maps, almanacs, commandments, dictionaries. Along with the story of this ancient printing company we discover the astonishing revolution of the printing press that shaped our world. This museum gives great respect to the written word and to the people who worked very hard to spread it. Remember to take the free audio guide, it is very extensive and informative.

I was doubtful at the entrance because it seemed like a small museum with only a garden inside. It turned out to be one of the best museums I've been recently. The display takes you through the history of printing, and they have an amazing collection of old maps, machinery, works of arts, books. 10/10 reccomend visiting, is a must if you're in antwerp

The place was scheduled to close in one hour at the time I arrived, this point was heavily emphasized when I was purchasing the tickets. Fifteen minutes into the museum, an employee suggested that I needed to pick up my pace, as there were seventeen rooms yet to visit. Twenty minutes in, with thirty minutes ahead of me, there were a half dozen museum employees walking behind those who were in the museum, sort of like a broom, they were walking together in a group. Typically in a museum each employee stands in a room, not so here, very unprofessional, if they could have closed the museum an hour early and not let anyone in I am sure they would have been happy and satisfied.

It's extraordinary to see how passionate about science and culture people were about 500 years ago. Old printings that will do just right in our bookcases today. Makes you wonder just how much did Culture and Science really evolved in the past centuries. Great building too ?. Definitely worth a visit, could take between 1 and 4 hours, depending on how much to you like books ?.

Definitely one of its kinds museum. If the world of printing fascinates you and you would love to know about printing and look into the oldest printer, you should not miss it. Even if you have one day in Antwerp, this should be on your list. Just plan it in the first half of the day because it closes at 5 p.m. I quite liked the look and feel of the place, right from the entrance. Helpful staff.

Amazing piece of history through the life of both a family and a Company whose printing activity has spreaded throughout Europe from XVI to the end of XVIII sec. You can visit their large premises that were together family home, offices and workshops. You can feel the atmosphere of ancient medieval times and the struggle of the family members to succeed through hard work and innovations. The story of the firm, the house growing with the expanding activity and then the last sunset years remind me the events described by Thomas Mann in the Buddenbrook's. I strongly advise to pay a visit. You'll come back (as it was for me).

(Translated by Google) A very rare world heritage where the museum became a world heritage site. Moreover, since it is a museum related to printing, it is not flashy. Furthermore, there are few explanations in English, so I can only imagine what is on display. Even so, there are interesting exhibits such as interiors and decorations that made me think that I was making a lot of profit at the time, and the most advanced printing machines at the time. The exhibits are not flashy, but the state-of-the-art technology of the time and the prosperity it brings to it are worthy of a World Heritage Site.

This museum is really unique and offers a unique perspective on the art and far reaching influence of printing, but also on the city of Antwerp, on art, on science, religion and the importance of the Renaissance period. It also intelligently links past to present to offer additional insights on today's issues. This is all on display in the unique setting of the original building of Plantin's printing works. All of this would justify a five star review by itself, but I would be amiss not to mention how friendly and helpful the staff. During this COVID period they are very attentive to sanitary conditions and the safety of their guests.

The history of book printing is a story that ironically cannot be captured in a book. Luckily this place is the perfect solution. The printing presses might have been replaced with modern counterparts, they are still marvelous as ever and the whole place breathes wisdom. In an excellent tour that takes you to two floors you'll see the history of the family Plantyn-Moretus as well as some wonderful books from their presses and private collection. The audio guide comes from your own phone, by using the erfgoed/heritage app. It's wise to bring your own headphones for this. Marvel at the riches from this family and learn a lot of interesting facts while doing so. It's definitely worth your time.

Heel interessant verhaal en als je van oude boeken houd zoals ik dan is het de hemel op aarde. Het binnenhofje is ook een mooie rustige oase. Wonderful museum that takes you through time and really let you imagine what it was like in an 16th century printing press. It also highlights the power of the written word that will make you think differently about your boring school books.

The Plantijn Printing House was founded in the 16th century by Cristoffel Plantijn. He was taken over by his son-in-law Jan Moretus after his death. This printing house was also frequented by humanists and sages such as Justus Lipsius and Simon Stevin. In 1876 Edward Moretus sells this printing house with all its contents to the city of Antwerp and to the Belgian state. One year later, in 1877, the doors of the printing house were opened to the public and it was presented to the citizens. The doors of the museum, which was severely damaged by a German V2 racket in 1944, were reopened in 1951. Although this museum was nominated for UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2002, it was officially included in the list in 2005 (as the first museum in its history). This museum is still preserved to high standards, as it includes a historical printing house from the 16th century.

(Translated by Google) Very interesting museum, highlighting the exciting life of Christophe Plantin, an inspiring Flemish businessman and one of the pioneers of 15th century printing. In a second part, the museum teaches us about the development of printing since its beginnings, by means of video and a paper guide which achieves the feat of being pleasant to read while being complete. Incredible archive pieces to observe there, like one of the 4 old printing machines of the time still existing in the world today or this bible printed with the characters of Gutenberg! Little extra: a locker available for free at the entrance to safely deposit your personal effects. PS: for the skeptics, note that this museum is classified with the world heritage of UNESCO ... Rare enough to be underlined! Very well preserved memories from famous entrepreneur and his business. This place also forms a picture of Antwerp and how old printing back in 16 century worked. There is lot more to see and experience. It's definitely worth your 2 hours of time if you are facinated by history. For curiosity I am adding the picture of timetable of one of the family member.

Interesting to see the old maps. How printing worked at Plantin’ factory is nicely explained. It would be even better if there is also brief explanation of the history of printing invention.

Very interesting museum. Nice collection of books and manuscripts. Why is it though that in every museum in the world, staff starts bullying you to leave twenty minutes before closing? We did half the museum in those twenty minutes.

Very interesting museum. Combination of history, architecture and art (lots of Rubens on display!). It was fascinating to see paintings, books and printmaking machines that are hundreds of years old. There was also a kind old man who showed you the process and I could even get involved and take home my print. I was there for 2 hours but easily could have spent longer given the materials. I really liked that they give you a guidebook to read through each room and there’s also a free Audioguide you can access on their app or even Spotify and SoundCloud!

Surprisingly nice and historic museum in Antwerp. It is a printing plant and publishing house dating from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The building is of unique architectural value. It was the most prolific printing and publishing house in Europe in the late 16th century. There's a large collection of old printing equipment, an extensive library, invaluable archives and works of art, among them a painting by Rubens. And last but not least: a beautiful interior garden!

Staggeringly good. We spent at least three hours here. The building itself is fascinating, and there is far more to see and learn about than printing. A must for anyone interested in books, language, skilled craft, history and the Netherlands. The free (to borrow) guidebook (available in many languages) is one of the best I’ve ever used. Succinct, well-written and as compelling as a novel.

An excellent museum with an extensive collection and a really well done audio guide. Significantly more Rubens art here than at the nearby Rubens House. Will definitely be back.

Really interesting museum about a family who brought the printed word to the masses. One of the most significant inventions of all time and a must see. Audio guide is short and snappy so you can move through at a reasonable pace. UNESCO listed

What a great museum! You can see some of the first printing presses. This brought education (through books) to the masses! Someone even demonstrated how these presses worked!! Incredible!

Amazing museum to visit. Price 12€ adult age 26+, 8€ age 18-25 (card only, no cash payment). I didn't use the audioguide but they are available upon request. Lockers are available for coats and backpack (2€ deposit or ask the person at the ticket office if you don't have the coin at handl. The whole tour takes 60-90min and make sure you visit every room as some are easily missable. A lot more interesting than I expected. I recommend

Among my favorite museum experiences for sure. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes printing presses or the history of knowledge transfer. Also had a lot of interesting antique furniture and interior pieces. Also a fairly affordable museum. I read with the paper guidebook, rather than use the audio guide, so I can't compare them, but the paper guide was really useful, and gave a ton of useful context for the various pieces on display.

This museum was unexpectedly exciting! The walking audio tour flew by and was engaging for adults and children, including several interactive exhibits and demonstrations. The gift shop was full of treasures📚

€8 student discount, 1:25h visit. The museum is well organized, with an audioguide that gives plenty of details (except in one of the first rooms, when it describes the different paintings, the order is pretty mixed up - you need to constantly pause it to figure out which one it's talking about). If you are interested in printing and old books you might enjoy it, I found that it isn't my kind of museum.

  • 4/5 Alpaca K. 10 months ago on Google
Amazing museum. We went on a weekday and it was very quiet. We loved seeing the old educational materials and printing presses. We spent a little over 2 hours here. Unfortunately, the gift shop was disappointing. We would've loved to buy a shirt or sweatshirt with one of the cool museum artifacts showcased (like in the attached pics) but we ended up leaving empty-headed because nothing really caught our eye.

Extremely interessant museum that will satisfy your dark academia dreams. You walk up and down and up narrow rooms and staircases through one of the first printing houses in Europe. I would recommend taking an Audioguides or one of the free guidebooks at the entrance.

A nice 1 and 1/2 hour in a brilliant museum. First I thought there would be some old printing machines to see. I was wrong. The building is fascinating and I learnt a lot about the history of books

Wonderful museum located in Antwerp. The museum is not far from the Cathedral. The Plantin-Moretus houses an immense collection of artifacts related to early printing. The building is the former house and shop of the Plantin family. The rooms offer exhibits of printing presses, foundries for types, woodcuts, impressive paintings, and lots of examples of old books. My favorite room is the library on the second floor, which showcases the books produced by the Plantin family. The interior yard is also wonderful; it reminds us of the need to relax and pause. It's worth the visit.

With about 38 rooms to explore, this museum offers a vast playground for printing- and book lovers to explore. Don't forget to pay attention to the wall decoration, which ranges from tailor made tapestries with detailed designs to opulent leather wallpaper. There is a (semi)dark room with sound and light effects which encourages you to explore the tapestries' scenes and stories with all your senses. The staff is very friendly, good-humoured, and takes the time to answer all your questions. There are free audio guides with information on each of the rooms. The only thing that could be improved is the wording of some of the texts in the exposition. For example, one text pointed out that colonisers had "discovered" (South) America.
