I really enjoyed this mansion. The house is beautiful and it's wonderful to experience how they lived a 100 years ago. It's amazing that this mansion is free, as other mansions I've toured usually have a charge. Something about the original owner of the home required that it it be maintained as a free museum. Our tour guide was excellent and knew all the answers to my esoteric questions. Old mansions like this simply require a tour guide to make the most of the experience, and this was an excellent example of that.

The home is stunning, and it was very interesting to learn about how it was added on to over the years. The Lincrusta wallpaper is an incredible site to see! The layout of the home also has some very unique aspects I've never seen in any other historic home I've toured, including the round, marble-topped radiators! Two drawbacks are that much of the furnishings are period but not original and that a number of items collected over decades by the owner are no longer part of his museum (a sad comment on the descendants who seemingly did not honor the wishes of the owner when he willed the home to be used by the city as a museum). That said, it is still well worth a visit.

Neat to see the historic home of SD's first senator as it was when he lived there. A beautiful home. I recommend visiting if you have time. There is a museum attached on the back of the house also.

I am quite impressed. Normally a home tour like this would cost $5-10 but this is absolutely free. That's my favorite price. The tour of the home is guided and you have to wait...but they have a museum wing where you can pass the time looking at displays. What a great idea. The house itself is gorgeous. Well worth a visit. Forget five stars. This is ten.

A beautiful home. It is furnished the way that Mr Pettigrew left it, and the Pettigrew family had very good taste.

This place is amazing to see what it was like in the early 1900’s. The have a section that covers frontier life as well as artifacts from that era and earlier. The also have a full tour of the old house. The have a lot of things priori the house as well as other things brought in from that era. They’ve kept the place in pristine condition and preserved it so that generations to come can see it. The lady that gave our tour was very knowledgeable and made sure everyone got to experience the whole thing. THEY DO TAKE DONATIONS TO HELP KEEP THE PLACE RUNNING, it’s not necessary to donate but it helps them with upkeep and new things.

The day my husband and I stopped here they gave us a tour of the house. Make sure you don't touch anything. If you have little ones you probably need to put a leash on them (seriously). When we took the tour I couldn't wait until it was over with because there was a woman with her kids and the smallest one kept throwing tantrums and the older daughter was trying to help and the mom would scold the oldest one. The place is interesting and all but we just had a bad experience due to this broad not being to control her children. The staff were nice and tried to help by distracting the kid; anyways the kid was just being a kid.

The Pettigrew Home & Museum has free guided and self-led tours. I do believe that it is handicap accessible as I recall seeing an elevator. The tour guides were friendly and quite knowledgeable and eager to answer our children's questions. The museum holds many interesting pieces of history and artifacts which we were told that Mr. Pettigrew was quite fond of and we were particularly fascinated with the exterior of the home which we were told that Mr. Pettigrew was fond of the petrified wood and desired it for his home. If you are ever in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota do make this museum one of your must-see sites.

This is a super cool place with a good chunk of local history. We took a quick tour through the residence and also looked through the museum. It's free and very much worth the stop.

Some days you want to whisk yourself away to a bygone era, one without shiplap, barn doors and gray everything. The Pettigrew Home (named for the second owners of the house and the first South Dakota State Senator), offers an elegant glance in to the past thru architecture, furnishings, paintings, wall paper and artifacts. A world traveler, Mr. Pettigrew and his brother understood the importance of preserving cultures and specimens and had already created a museum in his home while alive. Upon his death, this home and the museum were gifted to the city for us now to enjoy, for free! An interesting visit and beauty to behold, highly recommend as a stop to anyone’s visit to SF or to a local looking to learn some history of town. Gorgeous residential area, free street parking. Protip: In the lobby you will find free walking tour pamphlets of all the Districts Sioux Falls has to offer.

This was a lovely historical home with an informative tour guide. We arrived shortly after a tour had started, but only had to wait around 15 minutes for the next one. There's plenty of stuff to read while you wait.

This is a very nice free museum for all ages. It is free but they do accept donations to help keep it running. They have a room of things you can look and wait for the tour of the house, which is also free. The tour took about 20 minutes or so. It is 2 story and they can accommodate for handicap, they have an elevator for those who can't take the stairs. There is also another room after the tour to view as well. It is a small museum but a good way to spend an hour or so.

The attendants and staffs really know the history of the Pettigrew family and the museum portion after the guided tour is well worth the time. You'll learn alot about Plains history and the Pettigrew family.

This house is the pride of Sioux Falls. If you haven't visited it, you should take the time to stop in for a tour. It's absolutely beautiful! 💕

Very knowledgeable tour guides. Loved the history! Still hard to wrap my head around the fact that he built his own museum! Such a cool experience!

I loved this museum as a child and now. The tour guide did a wonderful job. My 9 year old grandson actually chose to go here. We had a great time! My hometown all in one place.
