We enjoyed this zoo. We were hoping to fo the giraffe feeding, but they said they hadn't started it for the year. All the birds were in hiding because of bird flu so we couldn't see those. The komodo dragon was also closed off. The museum there was much larger than I expected and the kids enjoyed that.

Great little zoo and museum. Due to bird flu most are not available for viewing. Also having a heat wave so some of the other animals were out for safety reasons. They have great enclosure for the animals and a lot of viewing areas. The cost was $15.50 for adults and their are coupons sometimes available. You also get into the Natural History Museum with your admission. Memberships are also available. If I lived close I would join.

We really enjoyed this zoo. It's small, and because it was so hat, a lot of the animals were not out... but we got to see a lot, especially the giraffes! Would love to return on a cooler day to see those we couldn't see.

To date the zoo has some construction in process. I believe once construction has completed the zoo grounds will flourish in a more beautiful view. The giraffe have not been viewable in the African area to see them visit the area closest to the vet clinic. The wolf pups are now about the size of mom and dad. They grew very fast over the summer. Loss of Arctic fox and others was devastating this last year Also ; I have to admit, I feel wheelchair accessibility viewing can be an issue due to height constraints. I believe the Zoo will and can make some changes to accommodate all visitors. This will take ingenuity while keeping safety for all persons in practice. What animals are seen are based upon animal or grouping acclimation to the climate conditions such as winter or summer. Some animals do better in either winter or summer conditions. The Zoo Grounds are beautifully maintained. Enclosed and open sitting areas for those who need breaks. Super walking exercise. Get a yearly pass and get your walk on. The side walks are kept clean in winter and well maintained year round. Some smaller building enclosures for closer animal viewing. Also serve as needed warm up houses on a cold day. Friendly staff and animal care takers. Lovely eatery in back of zoo. Restricted winter hours for eatery. Beautiful little store with gifts or snacks for visitors to purchase inside main building. Museum exhibit s/Animal Taxidermy closed. The owners, city of Sioux Falls , are in planning stage of what to do with the exhibits. Please be patient as they gather information, funding ideas, and make plans to present to the people. Restroom facilities on both sides of grounds. Summer season the restroom mid grounds is open to public. Classes and clubs for kids check their programs for times or availability. Many different fun events through the year watch the zoo site. Membership pays for itself in a few visits.

This zoo is such a great little place to visit. I have a membership and it is definitely worth the cost! It pays for itself afer just a couple visits. It's not too busy during the week. The train and carousel don't operate during the week, but they are a fun treat for kids on the weekend. The volunteers are the best! They are so kind and patient with children and do a great job helping people of all ages learn more about wildlife. The Delbridge Museum is awesome.

We are very fortunate to have such a great zoo locally. The staff of always friendly, the food is great when you need a snack, and the selection of animals is well cared for. We always renew our family membership and support the local zoo!

Great variety of animals and spaces. Lots of construction right now, May 2022. Love the penny smashing machines.

Very enjoyable morning walk outdoors on the well laid out paths. Great signage throughout provide good details on every animal or exhibit. And zoo keepers are happy to answer other questions. The natural history museum with mounted animals was a surprise and contrast, but provided a really good up close learning experience.

If a zoo is missing half of its animals attractions and reasons to be at the zoo then the zoo should charge half price. None of these animals looked well in spirit, except for two bears it just wanted to get down and play and wrestle in the pond.

The wife and I took the kids here for the first time, and they were just floored by all the amazing animals. The exhibits are clean, well maintained, and really beautiful. The animals really felt at home and happy. Many of them seemed to perk up and put on a show for us as we visited them. The staff was really knowledgeable and shared some really fascinating information about the large cat exhibits. We had gone here as kids and just couldn't believe how well it was maintained and all the great improvements. The surprise hit with my daughter were the wolves! So thankful to have a zoo of this quality nearby, and we'll definitely be back!

We absolutely love this place. Winters are long but they keep it changing and keep it fresh. We are excited for the lions to be added. Some of the more interesting exhibits here are the Primates, African Safari, Asian Cats, and definitely the bears. If anyone is wondering whether or not the family membership is worth it??!? It is and helps the cause.

Giraffes, rhinos, flamingos, monkeys! It was still winter time for the zoo so we didn’t get the full experience, but it was worth the cost of admission. Great family fun!

Small but finely managed zoo. It was clean. You can find basic amenities. Birds were living in much narrow space. Space for African animal seemed better. Train-ride for kids was fun. There are farm animals too!

Great zoo with a variety of animals! Nice mothers room in the museum. More places to eat would be nice! They bring out animals to see up close and pet.

Great Plains Zoo is Great! It is not the best zoo I have ever been to but definitely in the top 5. The employees are nice, helpful and courteous. The animals are great. We highly recommend it, when just wanting to stay in South Dakota. But the only thing that I would recommend they do is have some better prices in the gift shop. I understand everything is going up but at least have a Little bargain area. A little goes a long way.

Fine little zoo. Outdated and in desperate need of some funding to get updated— a lot of it was empty and had been empty for quite a long time, but the plans for a new exhibit and the bear exhibit were lovely. Loved the attached museum with old taxidermied animals. Many of them were done wonderfully and some of them were terrible, but those are almost more fun than the good ones.

I spent 1/2 day in that zoo it’s fully worth. Variety of animals… worth of spending a day with kids!! Very neat and clean environment… we can feed some animals by getting food from the booth there… I noticed that many kids were enjoying a lot by feeding the animals! There is a very nice gift shop!! A very good food corner… I did enjoy a lot and worth spending a day there…

First time ever at the zoo here. I have to tell you it sure is a nice layout overall. Plenty of different animals. The Fortress of bears was our favorite part. Would recommend seeing it when it's really nice. We didn't get to see everything because weather just started warming up and some animals where off exhibit still. Then at the end we found out they had a very cool museum of animals that we walked through.

  • 4/5 Samantha M. 1 year ago on Google • 36 reviews
The zoo was fun, most the animals were running around. Some of the animals where gone and there is some work being done plus the train is shut down, but it was still fun to see what was there. We were able to walk the whole zoo in about 2 hours.

We took our kids and noticed a golden egg in the giraffe enclosure. We opened it to find a pin and a coupon for a free stuffed animal! We were lucky enough to find another before getting ready to leave. After turning in our 2 coupons we thought there may be another egg to find so we headed back inside to look around and ended up finding one egg for each of our children we brought to the zoo that day! Our kids were so excited and thought it was so cool they each got a fun animal to remember our zoo trip with. It was a fun surprise for us because what kid doesn't want a fun animal to bring home after spending half the day at the zoo?!

So so so nice! Very clean. It’s has so much for the kids to do. What I love the most is it does not cost an arm and a leg and it’s very nice! Honestly if you have kids and are passing through it is worth it.

Not gonna lie, I was expecting a bit more from this place. It was good, but pretty small and bland. Good thing though was that nobody was around!

I honestly hate to say anything negative about the great plains zoo, because I feel it is a very nice local attraction and my granddaughters and I always enjoy ourselves there. However at the last outing, it did seem like a lot of the cages were unkempt. Lots of weeds and overgrowth. I understand that we are living in unusual circumstances these days, but I feel like these things should still be addressed. I completely understand why some exhibits were closed, and I have no complaints with that. But many exhibits that were open were untidy. Still in all we had a very nice time.

This is a smaller zoo, but very well maintained, and it does seem like they're always adding to it. For its size, there's a lot of variety of animals, from birds to big cats to bears. It's also a nice bargain. For the price of going to the movies, you could have a fun and educational experience checking out all the fascinating animals. There is a markup with the refreshments in the cafes and such, but that's to be expected, and again, it's no more expensive than the movies. For $11 today, I got a shareable portion of delicious fries and a cool commemorative refillable cup. The museum portion of the zoo has some realistic models of animals and is interesting if you're into that sort of thing. I also hear that there's a good selection of kids' programs and events at this zoo. You can also go during the winter and still have a great time, as we did several months ago. Keep in mind that all animals may not be available to see, but they do have special winter viewing areas. All and all, a very enjoyable time, and I will definitely be back soon.

This is s great zoo to visit. It'd been a few years since we'd been there, and it didn't disappoint. From bears to giraffes, there is a wide variety of animals to see. You don't need to make a reservation ahead of time, like many other zoos during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have some of the indoor exhibits closed temporarily for safety reasons. There is still plenty to see and do while you are there.

I am originally from Illinois, so I have been to some big zoo's EX: Brookfield Zoo. BUT this was my ultimate zoo experience. It wasn't very busy for a holiday today (Labor Day) so there wasn't much of any waiting in lines. Lots of animals to look at. My girl's loved the Carasol!!!! We will be back.

  • 5/5 Sarah S. 4 years ago on Google
We had a great time. Most of the animals were awake and ready to be seen.

  • 5/5 Victoria 4 years ago on Google
Very well maintained facilities. We love the new spaced for the penguins outdoors. It's the first time in years I've seen them happy. They were swimming so fast and walking around outside of the water. It was the most active I've seen them too. Made such a difference in the quality of life for them. 💕

Nice little zoo that only takes a couple hours to see everything. Don't expect something like Omaha but the selection is just right. Bring the kids and enjoy a family outing at the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History in Sioux Falls! Oh, and don't forget to bring sunscreen!

A good zoo, particularly for younger kids. Because the zoo is relatively small so it's easy to get through the whole thing in an afternoon. Also has quite a few options for activities that can be done inside when it's cold out.

My family and I have been here in the past, we made a trip again on 9/5/20 and were highly disappointed. A lot of animals weren't on display and nothing here has been updated at all. Our previous trip here was a few years ago and it looks exactly the same. We felt like it was a waste of money and time to go here when we weren't able to see a lot of animals. Next time we will take on the extra 2 hr trip to go to the Omaha Zoo.

The great plains zoo has become a great place to go! I have been coming here for almost 25 years and I can tell you my latest visit there was the best buy a mile! They have added so many great attractions and animals. And the best part was that you could actually see all of the animals. We've all been to Zoos where you can't see anything because the animals are all sleeping somewhere. Definitely not the case here. It's clean and convenient and there was plenty for kids to do including the petting zoo and a really nice carousel sponsored by the Sanford family. I would highly recommend this sue for any one of any age.

  • 5/5 Pete B. 5 years ago on Google
Very cool animal museum inside! Large selection of animals here! Only 12.75 to enjoy!

  • 4/5 Lucas w. 4 years ago on Google
My son is 3 and had a blast here. There is a lot to explore! The puppet show was the perfect length for his attention. We rode the train - I love that the rides don't cost extra. So much to climb and touch and run and slide down. We didn't even get to everything.

  • 4/5 Taylor S. 3 years ago on Google
We had our son's first birthday at the zoo and he had an amazing birthday! We purchased the birthday package and it came with the goodie bags, wristbands, animal feed, cupcakes, juice, tablecloths, silverware, cups, plates, etc. We also purchased an animal encounter and got to meet a tortoise. The handler was very knowledgeable about the animals. Additionally we purchased merry go round tickets and our guests had a lot of fun with that. The party picnic area is close to the front doors which was very convenient. My only critique is we wish there were more animals out in the Africa area and we wish they would bring feeding the birds back. Thank you to the zoo staff! We recommend the birthday party package here, you get a lot of bang for your buck.

  • 4/5 Brett 2 years ago on Google
Really fun, would recommend for all ages, it makes you appreciate wildlife! I do think it would be best in summer as some of the exhibits were closed for the winter season, like the Komodo Dragon.

  • 1/5 Nikita C. 3 years ago on Google
I have heard great things about this zoo but seeing the animals myself they look extremely underfed. the Red Wolf in the picture added looked so thin and weak and you could see their bones when standing. That it very disturbing to look at and especially kids go to this zoo to see the animals and they are gonna ask why they look like that and what are you supposed to say? That the employees don’t properly feed there animals? Very unprofessional. There was no signs of indication that 75% of the animals were going to be put away; otherwise i would not have paid $35 to see 3 animals.

It was a beautiful day outside, and we got to see many of the animals. We went the day prior to spring, so it was fine the animals weren’t out yet. The kids enjoyed seeing the animals and also playing on some of the playground equipment.

Love that it's a small zoo. Kids are able to learn about all the animals and didn't have to rush to see everything. Some exhibits are still closed for the winter.

We unfortunately visited the day after a storm. Most of the animals were off exhibit while they cleaned up. The penguins did not disappoint. Carousel was a hit too.

  • 4/5 J H. 2 years ago on Google
The displays in the museum could use a good cleaning but the animals outside were pretty active. The birds were put up due to a bird disease threat but at least we could see the penguins through the window.

It's a lovely zoo. It was a little chilly for some of the animals so they had them put away and you couldn't see them. A lot of the birds in the tropical type animals were unviable. Would be nice to be able to view them inside. But overall the zoo is very well laid out it's very walkable it's a beautiful lay out and they have gorgeous Displays. The foods a little expensive but it's a zoo.

This is a great, little zoo! It is the perfect 2 hour experience with your kids, and it never seems to be too crowded to enjoy like some larger ones I've been to. They have a diverse range of animals to see from all over the world, and they are currently adding a new lion exhibit for next year! I even love that they have a nice size park outside the grounds that makes for a good picnic spot after your visit. Best of all, for a small fee, you can even feed one of the giraffes during one of the designated feeding times. Overall, my family and I enjoyed this zoo enough that we became seasonal members so we can come on the weekends any time we want.

Have not been to the Zoo since I was a kid. I jointed the military and moved away and this was my first time back in over 40 years. What a great place to visit.
