Pleasant and grand temple situated just outside Madurai city. Best time to visit is during early morning and evening. There are trees and hills around the temple, making it even better to visit and sit for a while. Beware of the monkeys. If you're carrying any food, you have to save it from them or share it with them. There is a hall inside the premises which has some stone carvings. There is also a hall for stage performances like puja/classical music and dance .

One of the divine place to pray, have sight-seeing, take bath in holy water and a place to enjoy. Located just 18kms from Madurai. Karuppasamy, Perumal, Murugan temples are there here. Kindly avoid throwing out plastics in hills and ride/drive responsibly. Do not tease monkeys as they tend to hurt you, when they get irritated. One thing that they need to improve the parking in the Noobura Ganga, if they lay down cement or tar road there it would be easy for the people to park the Hatchback and Sedan cars.

Positive vibes all around the temple. April month festival was about to kick start when we visited. Place is getting ready for Chittarai thiruvizhaa after 2 years Covid restrictions. Public is allowed and asusual long queue to see our Hero Kallalagar. Due to Pachakappu this year Mullavar was closed with curtains. Only uchavar dharshan is allowed. Chakkarathaalwar & Narasimhar is having seperate idols here. Not back to back dharshan. Special in this temple. Special dharshan 10₹ is available, bcoz general dharshan is having long queue. If you want to skip some part of the crowd. Positive vibes and must visit temple on April month Chittarai thiruvizhaa and Kallalagar divine dip in Vaigai river.

This temple is located 17km from madurai . You can cover three temples in this area, kallalagar temple at the ground and pazhamudhircholai Murugan temple at the mountain which is just 1-2km on the mountain from ground and above half kilometre from Murugan temple you can see rakkayi Amman temple where you can see noopura gangai (silambaru) a hoky river at this place. This temple is covered by dense forest and a lovely place to walk from ground. But be careful with monkeys there. Shuttle service is also available from azhagar Kovil entrance.

Constructed in the dravidian style of architechture , the temple is glorified in the Divya prabhanda , the early medieval tamil canon of the azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries CE. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshiped as Kallazhagar and his consort Lakshmi as Thirumamagal . This temple is being the one of the most important and famous temple in madurai . In tamil month chithirai (chithirai thiruvilla ) happens based on this temple. Such a huge festival in madurai , Tamilnadu . Great place with great architechture .Do visit it !! 🤩

This temple is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple is at the foot hills of the Alagar Malai (mountain) which hosts a lush green forest. This temple has a beautiful tank. A huge fortress like wall separates the wall from the surrounding forest. This deity is a very powerful God who fulfils all your wishes.

Kallazhagar Temple is a revered place of visit, but be prepared for substantial crowds. The recommended special entry ticket doesn't significantly reduce waiting time. To ensure a satisfying darshan, it's advisable to avoid weekends and public holidays. While there aren't nearby restaurants, you can find refreshments. Opting for a cab or auto is preferable over crowded local buses, ensuring a quicker journey from Madurai, which is approximately 40 mins or more.

It is one of the most divine places to visit in Madurai. Such a serenity environment. Azhagar Kovil is one of the prominent temples situated at the foothills of Alagar hills. The Lord Thirumal is known with the name of Alagar here. Hence, the hills are named on the Lord. Lord Alagar or Sundararajan, who is the brother of Goddess Meenakshi. The temple has a shrine of Kalyana Sundaravalli, who is the consort of Lord Alagar.

This Kallalagar Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desam of Sri Maha Vishnu. Azhagar Kovil is a temple is located at the foothills of Alagar hills’. This hill is named Alagar since Lord Thirumal – Lord Vishnu is known in this area by the name Alagar, so the hills are named after him. The Azhagar Malai is none other than Dharma Devatha in the mountain form. The Thaayar is Sundaravalli. She has her own Sannadhi in this temple. Kallazhagar Temple in Alagar Koyil / Azhagar koyil village, Madurai was built by the Malaiyadhvaja Pandian, who is the father of Madurai Meenakshi Amman, and renovated by great Pandya and great Vijayanagara nayakkar Kings. Since days unknown, it is believed that the lord Kallazhagar comes to Thenur via Malaipatti, Alanganallur and Vayalur. In Thenur Mandap, the lord redeems the sage of his curse and leaves for his abode. “During Thirumalai Nayak regime (1623 to 1659 AD), in 1653 the Mandooga Maharishi relieving ritual was shifted to Vandiyur village where the event is performed at Thennur Mandapam, built by Thirumalai Nayak himself. Alagar kovil (Alagar malai or hill) is situated at the north of Madurai (Tamilnadu,India), away from 20 k.m. The other names of this are 'Thirumalirunsolai, Uthiyaanasylam, Solaimalai, Maalirunkundrum, Irunkundrum, Vanagiri, Virushapaathiri' etc. It is 18 k.m long in east west direction and 320 meters of height, in dimension. Some small hills are diverted from here, going towards all directions. This hill is fully enriched with a lot of vegetation, herbs, fruits and springs etc. Here the residing deity is called as Alagar, Kallalagar and Sundaraja perumal . The origin of this isthalam (place) could not be judged clearly. Moorthy, Isthalam and Theertham of this temple had been described in Varaaga puraanam, Pramaanda puraanam, Vaamana puraanam, and Angneya puraanam clearly. The compilation of all these at in one form named as Virushapathiri mahathmium found in Hindi language. Among the 108 Dhivyadeshams of lord Vishnu, the name 'Sundaraja perumal' has come in as common in the following three Isthalams, namely Anbil, Thirunaagai (Nagappattinam), and Koodal nagar (Madurai). Alagar malai had been highlighted in the Vaalmigi's Raamaayanam, Veda Viyasar's Mahabharatham and Sugar's Maha Bharatham. Viyaasar quoted in His Mahabharatham, that Yuthistran (Tharuman) came here, when they had been experiencing the forest life for 12 years. Again in Sugar's Bhagavatham, Balaraman, the incarnation of lord Vishnu, had reached the Virushapathiri (Alagar malai), and had gone to Sethu (Rameshwaram), when on His pilgrimage. In Silappathikaram (one of the five maha Kaapiams of Tamil language), also the glory of this hill had been highlighted, that one brahmanan (one who learn the veda and Upanishath etc.) had told Kovalan (hero of the kaapium),Kannagi (Heroin) and gownthiadigal (a jain guru), when approached Madurai for their survival, that they should visit "Thirumalirunkundrum", which is on the way to Madurai, and there they could capable of finding three holy Theerthaas namely, Siravanam, Bawahaaruni, and Istasiddhi, provided if they could fulfill some rituals there, which had been very difficult to follow.Otherwise, they simply worship the feet of the lord Thirumal (lord Vishnu) and could get the moksha definitely. But the sign of those three theerthas has not been here, only Nooburagangai or Silambaaru is the only theertham seen nowadays. It has been there under the shrine of Goddess "Sri Raakachi amman". A lot of sages belonged to various religion like Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism had been there at the caves found in the hill.

Parking lot is much free with a mild climate as this is situated in the outskirts of city. Outside Temple : God : Karuppar (Padinettam padi Karuppu) Ways to Visit: First visit Padinettampadi Karuppu. Offer him sandal and Panner (rose water) and get his blessings. You can offer towels for him. He is the one to whom even the Kallalagar asks before venturing out and in. He stands for justice and he demolishes fear within. Very Powerful god and he supports you by all the way he means. After that, head to Azhagar temple. Inside Temple: God : Kallalagar Goddess : Sridevi and Boodevi Ways to visit: There is a free slipper safe rack just outside the temple. Keep your slippers there and head into the temple. Monkeys will be more here. So please be safe with your belongings. Try to keep everything intact inside a bag. During lockdown, you’ll be provided a single lane to reach the god. While following the lane, you will reach Perumal directly. He is the one who stands like Thirupati Vengadachalapathy. Sridevi and Boodevi are sharing space with him. He is considered as the brother of Goddess Meenakshi. As Meenakshi is the queen of Madurai, here the perumal Kallalagar aka Sundaraja perumal is treated like a prince. While coming out of the place, you’ll be fanned by peacock feathers by the adiyavar over there. That is the ROYAL TREATMENT. Then head to pragara to visit Sundaravalli nachiyar and Andal. The dosai is the famous prasadam over here and delicious. One should not miss that. Then, at last, collect water near the place of exit (From RAKKAYI TEMPLE). It is blessed as the dheertham (divine water) of Noopura Gangai (Holy one). During lockdown, it is not allowed to take bath on Noopura Gangai on the top, so do collect water from here itself.

There are 3 temples 1. Base of hill: Mahavishnu and kallalagar temple 2. Mid hill road: lord Murugan abode 3. Uphill: noopuragangai holy water and lordess rakkayi temple The Kalalagarh Temple covers an area of about 2 acres (0.81 ha) and has a five-story gopuram (gate tower). The temple is surrounded by a rectangular enclosure with massive granite walls. The central temple houses a statue of the main deity, Sundarabahu Perumal. Statues of Sridevi and Budevi are also kept in the sanctuary. There are two life-size statues of Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The 10-day Chithirai festival at this temple is one of the festivals proclaimed by the government of Tamil Nadu. The day of this festival is declared as a local holiday. In Chithilai (April-May), Lord Kalalagar begins with Alagar Covil in the form of Kalala. And reach Madurai on Purnami (full moon day). Here he mounts his horse Vaganam and steps into the Vaigai River. Hundreds of thousands of devotees gather on the Vaigai River to watch this event. The Ethir Sevai festival is celebrated the day before Alagar enters the Vaigai River. Ethiru Sevai is part of the Chithilai Tiruvisa of the Karajagarh Temple in Alagar Coil and begins on the 4th day. On this day, Alagar or Lord Vishnu transforms into Kalal and enters Madurai via Kalal Nadu where the residents of the city welcome him. It is a tradition for Madurai people to welcome Alagar. When Alagarh returns from Vandyur Dashavatharam, an all-night festival takes place at Ramalayar Mandapam, north of the Vaigai River. After this event, Alagar is taken to Mysore Veera Mandapam in a decorated Anantaryar palanquin. The next morning, Alagar, disguised as a karar, returns to Alagar Kovil in a "poo parallak" (a palanquin adorned with flowers). The grand Chitra festival is held annually on Purnami (full moon days) in April and May. Kallalagar temple has tradition of giving lemon to protect home. Mahavishnu temple Prasad include dosai, laddoo, pongal. Murugan temple has sweet pongal as Prasad

The temple site adorned by the spectacular stone idol of Hindu Lord Vishnu. He is praised and worshipped here as the beloved brother of the lovely Goddess Meenakshi. This form of Lord Vishnu is known as the 'Azhagar'. Pandyan Kings have enjoyed control over the temple premises right since its construction period. The marvelous tower which welcomes you right at the entrance was built under the Pandyan ruler named Jatavarman during the mid-thirteenth century. The 'vimana' over the tower had been further detailed beautifully by the shiny plates of gold. There has been no looking back for the temple premises since then. King Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagar has been funding the temple with innumerable festivals ever since. The entire temple area has wonderful sculptures and sites which are full of breathtaking art of sculpting and construction. Major attractions One of the most wonderful highlights of the site is the breathtaking sculpture carved in stone of the beloved Hindu Lord Vishnu. The interesting part for all the Vishnu devotees and even art lovers here is that there are several sculptures depicting various famous postures associated with the Hindu lord. Known famously as the Azhagar Kovil is this magnificent temple located at the wooden Alagar hills. Alagar kovil temple darshan timings This exquisitely carved Madurai temple opens for darshan in the morning at 6 am and remains open till 12.30 pm. It opens at 3.30 pm again for evening darshan and continues till 8.00 pm. Alagar kovil festival The temple attracts a huge number of worshippers every day and especially during the festival of Chitra, the temple is flooded with a large number of people congregating from everywhere in the country. During this festival, Lord Alagar’s idol is taken out in a procession to Madurai. The procession makes many stops en-route. All these breathtaking attractions make the sacred temple of the beloved Hindu Lord Vishnu one of the most popular places to visit in Madurai and definitely among best places to visit in Madurai and a huge part of every Madurai tour package.

I have never seen such architecture in my life. Behad khoobsurat temple mana hai. Or the location in which it also binds the attitude of the temple. This is the only temple of India whose main door is the place of worship. The architecture of the temple is worth seeing.

This temple is located about 10Kms outside the main city. It's located on a large area. Entry to the temple premises for 2 wheelers is 5/-. One can experience calm when one gets here. Temple is located in the laps of hills and there is another temple uptop on the hill behind this Temple. Once can take their vehicle to get there. Charges are 10/- for 2 wheelers, one can even opt for regular busses that take 10/- per person. The route to the top is through the forest range here and has a lot of monkeys. This route is a small version of the tirumala trip for tirupati. On the top there is a revered site where a waterfall is considered as Gangai water and provides drinking water in all seasons. One can see many people walking to this place throughout the road. The place has a rich history and people get inside the temple and almost all take bath in this holy water. A person sprinkles water via a pipe and people take bath in their clothes, fill up water in containers. This is a wonderful place located in alagar hills.

Neatly maintained temple. Need some improvement in the queuing system. And devasthanam also needs to take action so as not to use plastics into the forest and the hill area. Roads leading to pazhamudhir choolai and raakai Amman temple are well maintained.
