If you enjoy unmaintained paths, constant skipping over dog waste, dog owners who don't use leashes, then this place is for you. Marked as a "Special Area of Conservation", I'd take a guess that it means conserving every dog t*rd that happens to drop there. Avoid.

Very disappointing visit to this lake. Clearly not being managed by council or any other government body for that matter. Pathways overgrown to the point of being obscured if you are going on the right trail despite signage. Pathways are a health & safety risk to the general public particularly young children & the elderly. Donadea Forest Park and its pond are a better option to visit and safer.

A beautiful quiet place for a walk. Definitely wear suitable footwear, paths are very boggy in places!

A well hidden gem. The area was once a manmade reservoir now purely letting nature take over. Tread carefully here with respect, and watch Nature do her work. A lovely day out.

Visited Ballynafagh during a warm summer morning in Aug 22. Had not been for about 4 years since last visit. I was very very disappointed about the management (lack off) and particularly the upkeep of the walkway trails to the perimeter of the lake. It was badly over grown and virtually impassable on some of the trails but for a few locals beating down (perhaps with a walking stick) the over grown vegetation, particularly ferns and nettles! I was shocked to see the site supposedly as a special area of conservation (SAC). Signs for trails were old, faded and some were missing on the lake perimeter walk. Only for meeting two local gentlemen whom were both local and retired from Kildare County Council - they reassured me I was on the right path back to the car park. They too as locals were discusted by the lack of management and upkeep of this amenity ans nature reserve The conversation with these two lovely gentlemen was much welcome and best part of our walk. Kildare County Council & the Heritage Council of Ireland need to act fast to conserve, protect and enhance this site for future generations or if left unmanaged will fall to ruin. I look forward to returning to this site before the end of the year to see much improvement to the trails, car park and signage.

Beautiful quiet place, great to get away to and enjoy the landscape and nature. I'd recommend wearing some hiking shoes for the terrain, as it can be quite rough and muddy. Car park is located conveniently, but unfortunately closes quite early while still bright out (even earlier recently at 8pm, rather than 9pm as before, it seems - sign has been crudely modified). From the car park, a quick walk to the body of water brings you a beautiful view. Taking away one star for the unfortunately early closing time for the car park. Personally lost track of time and got back to my car a few minutes late. Gate had been closed over, but thankfully I was able to lift it open, and close it again on the way out. No guarantees this will always be possible, however.

Great tranquillity in unspoilt surroundings. Well worth finding. Short walk to the lake but you will need wellies or boots if it's been raining.

A hidden gem. Such a peaceful spot for a nice walk. Waterproof footwear are a must as it's quite soft underfoot.

Nice little spot. The walks around the lake aren't overly long but it's a nice place if you have a dog. Lovely scenery too and decent carpark.

Fabulous hidden gem. About 3k walk around the lake. The ground could do with a little firming up in places for when the weather is wet, but it's a very charming area.

Definitely do not come here in trainers or everyday shoes, it’s very muddy and mucky. Not the most scenic walk

So muddy/ overgrown! Suitable for someone who likes dirt and trees cause that's all it is. Not suitable for kids or small dogs and be prepared to get stung alot by bushes.

Beautiful natural landscape, plenty of pollinator plants and the place was buzzing with life. The car park is average sized but not huge.

Great place for a quiet walk. Can remain muddy/marshy throughout the year, so have appropriate footwear when visiting.
