Stayed May 2024. Would not stay unless you are a keen surfer, there is not much to do otherwise. The beach off the resort is swimmable but not your classic fiji soft sand clear water beach. We were able to get on a reasonably priced boat each day to go out to the main breaks. It was quite dependent on what breaks others wanted to go to as there isn’t a huge amount of boat availability. You will go surfing as a group with the other guests etc. Bring your own boards, there were only a couple boards for rent when we were there, and it can be a rigmarole to rent them. If you score with the swell, then Funky fish is a good location and budget friendly place to stay. If the main breaks are flat though or blown out, you’ll feel like your stranded on an island with nothing to do very quickly. Basic rooms, did get a couple bugs in the bure huts but you get what you pay for etc. Were fly screened so no mozzies in rooms which was good. Food was basic but fine, was just a set menu each meal of the day. Nice walk up the hill behind the resort.
Was overcharged for $99 surf trips never taken. Poor customer service and communication. Boat not available surf trip when prearranged. Caption of the boat was amazing, legend. Problem was with manager, very dodgy character who said he’d discounted my bill, but after checking out discovered he hadn’t. When emailed, totally denied the offer. Big toxic bonfire of plastic burning all night. Very rundown. Unhealthy food. Smelt like rotten fish and a dead animal in pool area. Cigarette butts from staff in ashtrays in pool area. Still waiting for refund for items overcharged. My bar tab was overcharged, keep your own record of your bar tab. Saw staff drinking from juice bottle that was used to make mixed drinks for guests. Staff came and sat with me on deck of my accommodation while I was trying desperately to access internet for work, asking a lot of personal questions like, am I married, how much money do I earn a week. Felt very for comfortable, had to say I was going inside to sleep to end the conversation.
New owners are taking over so we were impressed by the rooms being clean and the grounds being very well maintained after reading some questionable reviews. This place has a lot of potential for backpackers and surfers. The food could definitely improve and we paid for transfers to eat at other resorts. The biggest struggle is the manager who failed to communicate and said we had boats to go surfing and to catch our ferry 3 times that no showed. This sucked. Staff partying next to our bure until 2am wasn’t very pleasant either. I’m optimistic that these kinks can be worked out and this is still a good option in an area filled with expensive resorts for folks on a budget. We enjoyed the snorkeling out front and hike up the hill.
A low key beachfront resort on Malolo - offering clean/basic and good value bures in an area where most resorts are $$$$+ for a stay. It’s a great option for backpackers or travellers looking an authentic experience. The best bits - the beach front location, option to snorkel off the beach and warm, friendly staff and Fijian hospitality. Thank you Tu Meli, Skelley, Ben and many others. The rooms, gardens and beach were very tidy when we stayed. The evening music and goodbye songs from the staff felt very authentic. Few niggles - the food is simple and there’s some scope for some improvement (we popped to resorts for a few meals). The team made sure our boat transfers ran on time / but it’s worth double checking to make sure the ‘ferry’ is free when you need to travel (especially if connecting to flights on the mainland).
