Well worth a visit. The gate may look closed during the weekend, but drive up and security will open it. The Mapungubwe collection is the center piece. Very helpful woman in the shop.

I had such an amazing experience taking in and interpreting the beautiful art pieces. Majority of them tell a story about Africans or African history. I learnt a lot and would definitely go again! UP students and students from other South African public universities enter for free🥰

Engaging artistic experience that crosses the disciplinary divide. The main drawing card is the golden rhino from Mapungubwe - a South African national treasure. The temporary exhibition related to the township experience and the resistances that derived from that. In all, a lovely experience.

Beautiful place and art. Very welcoming staff members. Art is beautiful with meaning attached to them, learn more about SAn History and African History in general. The work of the artists is Impressive, we are proud and they are one of the SAs top Art Heritage attractions🔥💯. Definitely I will pay a visit once more because I was told new exhibition will be opening soon.

Beautiful little gallery, a bit expensive compared to the government run galleries but better run.

This is a spacious, multilevel volume art gallery and possibly the largest and most modern of its kind in the capital city of Pretoria. Safe parking is accessible from Lynnwood road, and the Art Centre is adjacent to additional surrounding space for open air music concerts and an area where food can be served. A connecting passage forms a decorative bridge across Lynnwood road, the most visible part for commuters traveling along that busy road. This means the complex is also linked to and accessible from the opposite side of the road, where the main campus of the University of Pretoria is situated. Students have free access, though the public needs to pay an entrance fee. Memberships to some arts associations offer free or discounted entry rates.

Excellent uncluttered open spaces on many levels that let the art completely come to its own: taking its own space and let you breathe each and every display. And the Gold room..wow. Overall, so many thought-provoking pieces that ended up stirring deep emotions. Well done. Worth a visit, you will go again. I can't wait.

Beautiful place of art. It has been very well put together, with a wide variety of art pieces and installations. The old African gold pieces, especially the Mapungubwe gold set from the UN World Heritage Site is a must see!

Need new ideas on where to go on a first date and not sure what to do? Art galleries are always a winner and the Javette is absolutely stunning. It’s modern architecture and current art pieces are something to marvel. Highly recommend checking it out! 🖼

Great venue. Amazing art. Be aware that the JAC charges an entrance fee for all visitors to events; even if the event itself is advertised as "free of charge". You need to pay a steep entrance fee if you are not a member of staff or a student at UP. This fee is payable even if you do not visit the museum at the time of an event. This may affect community participation and accessibility. I would encourage the JAC to review this aspect.

It was a wonderful experience, a museum that portrays much of the South African history and stand point through art. Much of the work by African and South African artists. The museum is quite big so bring something to stay hydrated if you want to tour it all.

The Javett Art Centre, located at the University of Pretoria, is an exceptional new attraction, showcasing the art heritage of South Africa and the continent of Africa. The museum bills itself as dedicated to the "Art of Africa". "Art centre" is really a misnomer - this attraction is a large and impressive art museum or gallery. It houses a range of exceptional art of Africa, from Irma Stern's "Arab Priest" to Alexis Preller's "Discovery". But the most impressive exhibit of all is the Mapungubwe Collection, with its centrepiece, a tiny, but perfectly fashioned gold rhino. The Mapungubwe Collection dates from AD 1000 – AD 1300, and was discovered by archaeologists in the what is now the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, in the north-east of South Africa. The Mapungubwe Kingdom boasted master goldsmiths; the rhino, and a range of other gold pieces including necklaces and other small figurines, are testament to their craftsmanship. The museum is large and spacious, with three floors of exceptional art, all laid out expertly, in a way to entice the viewer in. Opened on 24 September 2019, it must already rate as one of South Africa's top attractions.

It was a great night out. It was my first time going to their local movie night. It definitely is a place I'll want to go to again. I hope the movie that plays on the first Friday of August is as great as the one I saw on the first Friday of July.

Great place to visit. Was fascinated by the collection of Ghanaian art that they have. Free for students. I'll definitely visit again.

What a fabulous gallery and the Boschoff exhibition is a must. This man is a genius. The Javett is a gem 💎 that deserves to be discovered.

It would be really great if you would pay more attention to your website!!! It states that you are open, we drove all the way there for a great day of art viewing, only to be informed by the security guard at the gate that the museum will be closed until 11 January 2022. And apparently we were not the only people to arrive there today. Pls update your details!!!

It's a fun cool space to be at if you love art. The exhibitions change every certain couple of months and the atmosphere is often quiet. You are allowed to take pictures and tours are available to take you around the space. Plus entry is free for students with student cards.

Lovely show by Willem Boshoff. The African Gold exhibition is also extremely cool. Half of the space was closed but it was still worth it. Love the parking garage graffiti. It was also empty so me and my friend were the only ones there, it was so cool to have a whole museum to ourselves.

I may have built it up in my head, and of course the press around it was robust, but it is otherwise a rich location. Pretoria needed another major art institution that was not pretoria art museum. The Javett collection represents an interesting perspective on south African art history. Hopefully there will be much opportunity to have critical discussion here. There is a very quaint gift store, but no coffee shop as yet. There is an entrance fee which does make things a bit exclusionary, but at least student tours can be booked at no cost to the students.
