It’s a northwestern and north Evanston staple and a great place for good, affordable lunch. I have been coming here for the past 5 years almost once a week. Their burritos are yummy with several vegetarian options. Over the years, I have grown to love the sweet potatoes and the tofu burrito and every once in a while I order the yucca or the spicy mushrooms. They also give you a standard red salsa, but when I have asked for it, I have also gotten either a salsa verde or a spicy salsa. If there’s one place that I would come back to eat in Evanston this would be it. I think their burritos are second only to the ones I have had in Mexico City. It’s a great blend of heat, fat, salt and acidity and their taste has been consistent over the past 5 years. I love their new online ordering system, it’s faster and more organized than their original system where you’d go into the store and stand in a line to place an order. The older system was chaotic. The online system has some issues occasionally but it’s pretty reliable and convenient. It is take out only and during the summer they have a few chairs outside, I’ve never seen the outdoor seats empty though! All in all, amazing place, fantastic service and great food.

Nice place. I tried the burrito which was just okay (all the meat was at the bottom and it has too much rich and very few veggies to my taste/opinion). If I'll have a chance I will try something different.

We love Tomate Fresh ! The tacos and burritos are super fresh and delicious. We pick up or have delivered at least once a week. The Aqua Fresca and chili relleno burrito combo is very satisfying.

I love the food, everything I’ve tried has been very tasty. A close friend of mine is visiting and is very intolerant of gluten, this is one of the few restaurants that’s taken the care to make sure her food is safe and she was able to enjoy her dinner without getting sick. I especially like that they highlighted the allergy notes on the ticket. I wasn’t able to get ahold of them on the phone to ask about allergies but I was able to use the chat feature on their Google listing which was quick and easy!

Tomate used to be much better then they currently are. Their meat never tastes freshly cooked and always shows up cold next to other ingredients like rice and beans in their tacos and burritos. Whatever you do, DO NOT order delivery. Their drivers are always an hour or more late! The food really isn’t safe to eat at that point in my opinion. They never answer their phones and their delivery drivers are not traceable. They need a better system for delivery and fresher ingredients.

Three dollar tacos! They have burritos and other stuff (to long to list, but there is something for everyone), as well as desserts and horchata. Very tasty, good customer service, no room to eat, barely any room to order. But still great! Patio seating out front.

If you’re looking for authentic Mexican food in north side chicago (let me tell you, not the easiest to find without going south chicago) this is the place to go. I come here regularly to get lunch for my partner and I and the food consistency is always there. They have wonderful vegetarian options (the sweet potatoe gordita or black bean burrito are two of my go-tos but they’re all good) and the meat there is tasty as well. The food is always ready in such a fast time, even if there are a ton of orders. I don’t think I have waited longer than 10 minutes for my food but usually is like 3-4 mins. I recommend this place to anyone, great food and the staff is super friendly. **UPDATE I wanted to add a few more to my review. The consistency is amazing at this place. The food is always so delicious and the portions are generous for the cost. The salsa is fantastic, and the heat varies on the day. overall, it’s not very spicy but sometimes more than others. Sometimes they have fried plantains and they are SO GOOD AND SOFT. the pomegranate sauce with it is a nice touch. They will continue to have our business. SIDE NOTE - The burritos do not come cut in half, this was for pictures.

Favorite burritos from anywhere! So fast for pick up. Highly recommend the chili rellenos burrito. Tofu and yucca are also excellent. Amazing for vegetarians. They only do pick up.

Was excited to visit this place only to find out they were doing online orders only. Had to stand there and make the order online and then wait for the food. The first person I interacted with here was somewhat rude about the fact that it was online only, but the person who handed me the food was much friendlier. They did have a small table and 4 chairs outside on the sidewalk. Wasn't the most ideal eating space, especially considering 2 people by a train got into a screaming match during my meal. Can't control crazy pedestrians. I just wish they had a space to sit and eat. However, when we did get our food it was delicious. My burrito was slightly overpriced in my opinion but it was yummy.

We hired the taco cart for a backyard summer party and it was fantastic. Tania and her team are so easy to work with and the food was tremendous. Everyone raved. They present plenty of choices for the menu, supplied everything and were timely. The set up and take down was seamless, so it was not only delicious but also convenient! I highly recommend the taco cart for a catering option. It’s better than a truck in so many ways, it’s quicker and more personal, and quiet and clean.

This is my favorite spot for lunch in Evanston. The food is always fresh, made very quickly, and delicious. I’ve yet try something on the menu I didn’t absolutely love. I don’t normally leave reviews, but I need to tell someone!

Amazing food and great people working here. My personal favorite is the carne asada but all my friends have different favorites which goes to show you everything on the ment is good!

Last weekend I drove down from Buffalo Grove to Evanston to grab some food here at Tomate with my cousin. I wish I lived closer, the carne asada burritos are super clean & the best that I have tried in illinois. Friendly service as well, i will be back soon for the Chicken Gordita!

The food was good. Horchata was too sweet for my taste and expensive for the size. Prices are fairly decent, however each additional extra ingredient such as sour cream and cheese is $1.50, guac is $3, you can potentially be paying $11 for 1 taco. I think if they change their high fees for extra ingredients I would return. So far, all of my co-workers had a sticker shock when we ordered.

Food was good. I tried quesadilla and taco. They were really good. Taco can be more flavourful though. This place is take out only, but was impressively quick, I waited for less than 10 min after my order I guess. Good to order and go ahead.

Haven’t tried the rest of their food, but the pastor burrito was really bad. It doesn’t have flavor at all. On top of it the register guy isn’t friendly to the customers

Good cheap food. Online ordering makes it convenient. I've only had the tacos but they're tasty and cheap! Go for it!

Food is very good and staff is nice. My only complaint is the online ordering system is frequently down, even when the store is open. I've tried calling in when this is happening but they don't answer the phone.

Delivery was very fast and well packaged. Food was excellent. Both the mushrooms and the black beans were a big hit throughout the office. Also found the menu to be inclusive and reasonably priced for the street tacos. Would order from here again! I loved the super fresh salsa included with each taco too!

Man, the salsa at this place is somehow super great on their burritos. (I don't usually add salsa to a burrito, just here.)

Not the best tacos in the world, not wow, meat is a bit dry in tacos beef. I loved their empanadas and will order more than one next time. Shop is tight, don t expect to eat there, it s only for pickup but food is well wrapped. Shop has different juices (rice, mango, etc.) but haven t tried them yet. Last but not least, staff is very kind!
