There is a decent collection of contemporary art exhibits. Good location at seaport. Simple walk around the gallery. Free entrance on Thursday evenings for the main gallery. Good seating view of the harbour area. Worth a trip although not a must go for non contemporary art fans.

Nice architecture and seating spaces overlooking east Boston. Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” was very interesting and reflective. Free under 18!! 💵 Parking is impossible like anywhere downtown 😕 unless you want to pay $473937 📉

I really enjoyed this place, not just because of the art (contemporary art can sometimes be difficult to appreciate and connect with), but also because of the institute's shop and wine/coffee bar. The shop has a fantastic collection of items that you'll immediately want to buy - funny books, art albums, original jewelry, and interesting and meaningful pictures and decorations. I spent an entire hour exploring everything they had to offer and ended up buying some things too. As for the cafe, it offers a fantastic view of the harbor where you can enjoy a glass of Californian Chardonnay while contemplating the sunset. It's a truly wonderful place that is a must-see.

The exhibits are only on the fourth floor and encourage contemplation. The location is amazing and one can enjoy beautiful views from the glass walls on the fourth floor. One can sit on the benches out there and enjoy watching the boats go by as well as planes taking off from Logan airport. After visiting the museum, taking a walk along the boardwalk is totally worth it.

Free entry on Thursday evenings (can book online). A decent art gallery, quite small in size with a few thought provoking installations. I wouldn’t pay full price as you can finish the full gallery in 1h, but some installations were very innovative. Also great views from the 4th floor at the end of the exhibit.

Cool building— glass elevator and waterfront view. The art is pretty good too.

Located in the Boston Seaport area, the Institute of Contemporary Art is a beautifully situated and realized arts institution. Though the collection and gallery space are relatively small, the ICA offers a full experience by utilizing each space as fully as possible. Though the current (November 2021) main draw is the Kusama infinity room, the exhibit of works by Deanna Lawson are a highlight as well. Equally compelling as the contemporary art are the views of the water from both inside the museum and out on the esplanade. If you love contemporary art, this is a must-visit for any Boston trip.

The exhibition was good, the museum store has a lot of fun stuffs, but they have way less arts than I expected. I thought the 4F building was full of arts🤣 If you want to take the water taxi, you need to book in advance. Also they have an artwork from Julian Opie and it’s on the 3F! Don’t miss out!

Nice location, great people who work there, beautiful views from the front seating upstairs, but I really didn't care for the exhibit on display at the time, really not my style. Too narrow minded. But we all have our own perception of what we view as 'art'.

ICA is a must-do if you’re visiting the seaport. The museum offers a nice variety and it’s easy to move through the various galleries. The sitting area on the 2nd floor offers a spectacular view and is a great place to pause and reflect.

I was looking forward to visiting, but was pretty disappointed. Directions were unclear and there was only a handful of exhibits open. Kind of disappointed that we paid money and it took less than 10 minutes to walk through the exhibits.

First of all, the building itself is absolutely beautiful. The entire gallery is located on the 4th floor only and features art in different mediums (paintings, photographs, sculptures, etc). There are cards and pencils available with games that kids can follow. Definitely worth visiting!

The museum was okay, the architecture was great, but the staff was amazing which is why I gave 5 stars. My friends and I went on Thursday after 5 to get in free and we didn't purchase the online tickets ahead of time. As we are from texas we didnt know to purchase the tickets. However, they were sold out but the staff was very kind and allowed us in. Thank you!

Very cool spot. The art inside is even more gorgeous than the art that is the building and the space. Be sure to book the exhibit beforehand!

This is a super small museum. It might be good if you are new to museums or don’t often like them that much (that has been me for a while), but it’s not necessarily the best if you want detailed descriptions of the work. It’s mostly left to interpretation and again it’s 1 floor, so if you want to be free and float around a museum, this might not be the one. I went on MLK day when they had free admission and it was definitely worth it.

Cool contemporary art museum. The building is very interesting and located in a very dynamic part of Boston. The exhibitions were very varied and well curated. Despite the building's size, only one floor hosts exhibitions. Therefore, the visit was shorter than I thought. $20 for an adult ($15 with a student ID) felt a bit much for the size of the museum. It gets sold out, so book in advance.

Definitely worth the stop if you're visiting from out of town. Large selection of art and easy flow through the gallery rooms. Clean bathrooms and fast elevators. Visitors were respectful and friendly as well. Great view from the fourth floor looking out into the water and fun adventurous atmosphere wandering the the museum.

A total of 30-40 sculptures, a handful of images, some dreamed art, an AV experience, and a view of the Boston Seaport is what is available here. There are far better art museums, even in Boston. It just seems small, which is emphasised more by the large size of some of the art displayed. Nothing to compare to even Mass MoCa. This space is probably better as the teaching institute it is, rather than the museum I paid admission to view.

Nice little art museum that offers interactive installations, which is great since it engaged the audience and made the visit more fun! I went on a Thursday to take advantage of the free admission. All galleries available were on the 4th floor. They have a little space behind the elevator for your belongings which was helpful since I went after work. After stepping off the elevator, it takes you through a series of small exhibitions before a great view of the port. When you're done, go sit outside on the grand steps for a nice view and breeze!

Outstanding building design. The museum allows natural light and inspiring views. We visited during Black history month and were able to see African-American portraits. Appreciate the portraits' honesty and beauty. My daughters loved the stuff at the gift shop.

It was a well put exhibit, however some of the employees were very rude to me. They single me out for “ having my mask too low “ but when I looked around everyone else was wearing it the same way but they only told me. I also wish the employees would’ve been more quite instead of gossiping very loudly with one another when one is trying to enjoy the experience (not all employees but some)

A great diversity of multimedia exhibits. My only complaint is that it didn’t have more exhibits. It was only one floor! And the view of the harbor was beautiful.

Went with my friend on MLK Jr. Day and it was so nice. It was quite a bit of ppl out, but still a great time. I love that most of the exhibits had Caribbean origins.

  • 4/5 Wayne G. 2 years ago on Google
It's a small museum with all the exhibits on the top floor. We got timed tickets, presumably to control the number of people in the space. Masks were required and it appeared as if they were prepared to provide a mask if you forgot yours. Parking was conveniently located across the street, but was, as usual for Boston, a bit pricey.

Great galleries, but only one floor.. It’s a modern building, great harbour view, nice gift shop, not too much to say really. The tickets are free on Thursdays, but the regular general admission it’s $20 (in that case, not worthy)

I have Cultivist Membership for free entrance. I love the architecture building here designed by John Hancock. There is a beautiful observation deck on 4th Level. However, this museum only have one level of exhibition the rest of the levels are not opened to public. It’s a small museum to relax and get refresh.

Beautiful art museum, both architecturally and in its exhibits and galleries. With lovely views of the harbor and surrounding Seaport district, the ICA is both elegant and bold in its presence within its glitzy, new neighborhood.

IcA offers free membership for the littles 5-17 years + 1 accompanying them… this is worth it because paying for tickets at this place is not worth it. There is only one floor of gallery space. They do keep changing it up, so you won’t see the same thing if you go every few months. Right now they have some Caribbean art which was good, and some Asian artists… We were there for a workshop on the ground floor, by Lily Xie. It was a stop motion workshop, but the time for the workshop was so less, by the time they taught us what’s needed to know, it was hurry hurry hurry to pack up because they had to set up for the next workshop (which was a drop in from 12-5 pm) we rushed thru our stop motion videos which wasn’t fun. They said we’d have enough time to make our videos or if we wanted we could take our materials home to make a better video… They had a light puppet workshop after where you could make shadow puppets. The view of the harbor from the galleries are nice. The galleries themselves could use some improvement. Some art pieces in the middle of the room have their write ups in random places, and it’s not easy to locate them especially if there is more than 1-3 artwork on the wall; with random art names, and no description for what we are looking at. I struggled with 2-3 of them before giving up. And the write ups themselves are very less, doesn’t give a glimpse into what the artist was thinking, why they did what they did, or what we are walking into (if it’s a room art) maybe they want us to do an audio tour, but it’s not clear when you enter where to get the info… a whole lot of employees but looks like they are all there to just protect the art but not really educate the patrons about what we are looking at. (They chided us for having an empty crushed water bottle when we asked them a question about some art) 🤷‍♀️ overall didn’t feel the vibe at this museum It was nice to have lockers to stash our stuff at the entrance, felt light without our jackets and bags. Your local library may have free or discounted passes to go here, I don’t think it’s worth it to buy a ticket for this… The animation workshop was fun, but it was badly organized, if it wasn’t cheap ($5 a ticket) and the free admission for kids, I wouldn’t be back here.

Came here a few days ago to experience Yayoi Kusama’s LOVE IS CALLING, an infinity mirror room. It was awesome but you’re only allowed in for one minute, not enough time to fully appreciate if you’re snapping pics.

  • 4/5 Ana S. 11 months ago on Google
We went on a Thursday at 5pm which is their free evening. The lockerroom right next to the stairs was also free and easy to use. A lot of people complain that there isn’t enough to see but it just means they are not actually taking time to read the snippets from the artists about the process and intent of the piece which is often a big part of the artwork. I actually thought the museum was a good size, and I was able to give each artwork its due amount of time. It helps if you have someone with you to bounce ideas and perceptions off of. We also got to participate in a short 20 min discussion talk about one of the pieces organized by one of the museum employees. They were very nice and informative. There were 3 exhibits total. The first one was my least favorite. It had a variety of artists and some of the art seemed more pretentious and fake deep. The other two exhibits were great though.

Love the ICA building and location, very beautiful! The gift shop and everyone working there is great. I also really appreciate that they do free Thursdays, and I think this is great for the Boston community. That being said, I wish they had more art. For a large museum it seemed like most of it was administrative offices etc and the exhibit space was pretty small and left me wanting more.

  • 4/5 Youn S. 10 months ago on Google
The art museum, despite being small, is a very modern building with breathtaking views of the Seaport area. There are currently three exhibits in total, with a particular focus on Simone Leigh's works. I was a bit disappointed as the ICA building is quite large, yet the artworks are only limited to the 4th floor. The rest of the building seems to be dedicated to administration purposes. Quality of the artwork is great so I was hoping to see more.

  • 4/5 Kaley C. 10 months ago on Google
Beautiful views, delicious snacks and coffee drinks, the gift shop kind of stole the show for us! Much of the art were very, very large pieces and therefore the singular floor of exhibits was a little disappointing. Still worth the visit! I look forward to going back during a different series of exhibits.

  • 5/5 Sophia P. 2 years ago on Google
Nicely located, very clean and knowledgeable and professional staff. The seatings overlooking the shoreline and East Boston offer the most amazing views. The exhibition of Virgil Abloh "Figures of speech" was very original and reflective. It was at a reasonable price, discounted for seniors, free for students and children. There was parking next door in the back of ICA and it was only 17 dollars when we spent 3 hours around there between the watershed, the restaurants and ICA itself. My family really enjoyed the outing and would certainly take them back soon.

This museum has a very nice waterfront location and building, but I was disappointed with the very limited art space - only 3 exhibitions on the 4th floor. Great artists though. Basically, it is a small museum despite a relatively big building. But, they have a pretty good museum store - lots of interesting finds and very unique books and art pieces.

  • 5/5 Joseph A. 10 months ago on Google
This place has my attention with it's architectural design rather than the art work inside. Building design has unique features with it's cantilever floor, elevator, seating below cantilever floor so that people can watch the harbor from the best location etc. I have seen better art museums such as Princeton art gallery, NY open sculpture museum. Best exhibition section for me was an exhibition of collages with Japanese craft paper. The section where clay sculptures and videos were not pleasing for me.

  • 5/5 Collin D. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful museum. Unique architecture. Always a good ticket show. Saw the infinity wall. Completely mirrored room with pastel black spotted tentacles. Dope. Also the study room has a wall that is not level that is also glass and all you can see is the ocean Trippy. Like it makes you almost trip because you are. Disoriented. Cool.

The Kusama exhibit was beautiful and so unique! I would definitely recommend visiting just to see this exhibit while it’s still in Boston. The rest of the museum, however, was lackluster and very sparse. I was warned that the majority of the exhibits were closed today but even still this museum only has one floor with exhibits out of the four in the building. The rest of the building seems to be occupied with office space. I don’t think a few statues and some embroidery is worth even ($15 student discount price) to see. The shop is cute but mostly has coffee table books and tableware, not many prints and very little related to the exhibits they have.

  • 3/5 Abigail E. 1 year ago on Google
I visited the museum about a year ago to find at least one closed exhibits, which had not been mentioned on the website. It is rare that I visit a museum and take very few pictures, but this was the case for the ICA. The view of the water from the hallway was my favorite part of the museum. Part of the mental block that kept me from enjoying the museum is that the space felt empty, as if the curators were not using the walls and floors to their full potential. William Kentridge's film KABOOM! was my favorite exhibit and Ragnar Kjartansson's incredibly lengthy film The Visitors was at least unique, but I was generally not enamored with the rest of it.

The actual gallery space is smaller than you'd expect. If you're just walking through, don't expect to spend a lot of time there. Good museum but felt the galleries and artifacts are a bit lacking. Museum was not very large with the entire gallery on one floor. Half was split in to a large permanent collection and the other half is a smaller collection. Staff is friendly and the admission prices are reasonable although a bit higher than I would have expected for the small space. They do participate in Bank of America's Museums on Us program though.

It was not worth the price. $30 for 2 min inside the installation "Love is Calling". There are 4 floors to this museum but floors 2 and 3 are closed (but there is one piece of art beside the elevator on 2nd floor. Make sure you don't miss that!) and floor 1 is a cafe & a gift shop.

Don’t expect to see much. There is usually only one floor of stuff to look at. But the quality of curation is usually there. The view on the 4th with the sea and sky is great. Spent an hour with the art. And 30 mins staring at the view. Haha.
