Oh My Gosh this place is amazing!!! Everything was amazing but do yourself a favour and please try the fried chicken entree! It's crispy, fatty, tangy and with just enough spice to make it interesting! They only had 2 staff on but they were both incredibly lovely and very accommodating and my daughter who insisted on dancing in the middle of the restaurant. We sat outside on the side area and the ambience and decor really added to the experience. My partner and I both felt like we were on a vacation! Definitely give it a go!

Really wanted to like this place but for $43 for these 2 very bland dishes I must have got them on a bad night. The chicken tagine had 3 chicken drumettes and some veggies in a watery bland sauce for $20. The lamb lovers had 1 lamb forequarter chop and lamb mince pieces not much bigger than a pea and rice for $23. The amount of actual edible lamb from this dish was minimal, as shown by the photo. To serve drumettes and forequarter chops for that $$ is definitely working the margins in their favour and surely times aren’t that tough?

Beautiful interior decor with lovely basket lanterns. The cassava fries ($7) were tasty while bacon plantain ($8) was bland. The beef stew ($20.90), goat soup ($24) and fish stew ($24) were all very tasty and had approx 2 ladles of soup in each bowl. We left feeling hungrier than when we first started, so if you eat like a bird, then this is the right place for you. I also recommend the Kalam Farik cocktail ($16), which was sweet and refreshing.

No joking this is one of the best place I've been in Brisbane! The food is INSANE, healthy, tasty and affordable. We had the whole fish (delicious), the cow feet soup (I love jelly thing so it was absolutely beautiful), fried eggplants, spicy brown lentils and the black plantain ( a sweet and savioury dish). All so so so good! The staff was really friendly and helpful. Highly recommended

The food was amazing! All the dishes had so much flavor and the spices complimented each other perfectly. The cocktails were great as well and nicely presented. Prices were more than reasonable. The service was lovely and attentive. The place was cozy and gave a peaceful and warm vibe. I’ll recommend this place with all my heart and I’ll be back!

Well now I know why it's called Wau Kitchen! Definitely one of the better meals I've had out locally lately. Really nice, enjoyable food. Money well spent. Was worth it and will be going back.

Above and beyond customer service and excellent food! The Baked Tilapia is amazing with a side of pap(semolina) a pot of hot tea. The atmosphere is cozy, with a very pleasant interior, and very close to kangaroo point cliffs of you plan a stroll there afterwards. Perfect for a date!

Recommendation - Aseeda (to accompany your meal); Sancocho; Fried Tilapia; Boerewors; Salata Aswad; Everything on the menu is amazing Wau Kitchen is an amazing restaurant run by a wonderful team. The food is very diverse and the team takes great effort to explain the origins of the dishes to its customers. Over the time it has been open, we have taken many different groups of friends and they have all loved the food and the vibe at Wau. On busy nights, it could take slightly longer for the food to get your table, but the wait is worth it. There's plenty of good drinks and music to keep one entertained in the meantime. Making a reservation is advisable as many nights can get a bit busy. Please take the initiative to visit, and you'll not leave disappointed.

I have done Uber eats, take away and dine in. I'm a regular and I keep going back because of the whole experience. By my second visit, I felt as if I was going to see my family! They make you feel welcome and the vibe is just different. The food... That's something else. Straight from Africa to your plate! The spices, the authenticity of each dish is remarkable!! My favorite is the bacon wrapped plantain and the fried Talapia. Yummmm! I have brought friends and family who also have continued to return because of the quality, portion and value of the meals. The atmosphere is another whole vibe. The aesthetic is tribal and color, true African. Love it and will continue to recommend people!!! ❤

I had the whole fish , the goat pepper stew and fried chicken. The fish was a very generous size and delicious with the lime and light spices. Goat pepper stew also very nice. Fried Chicken had a Moroccan spice and dipping sauce which really went well together. The chef and host is very friendly and gives a good explanation of the dishes.

Both the food and the staff was amazing. Would absolutely recommend to everyone. One of our first time eating African food and the chef was really good at explaining the different courses, flavors etc. Be aware that the bar and the kitchen are two separate business which can be a bit confusing when you arrive, but just ask for help and they will show you. Hope to be back soon!

Delicious food complemented by warm, welcoming service! Wau Kitchen is currently located within The Palace Lounge Bar - go up the flight of stairs off steet level and tell bar staff you are there for the African Fusion food. You won't regret it! 🤤👍

Authentic & delicious, excellent value, great atmosphere This is the best new find in Brisbane. Let’s start with the basics/fundamentals: Cuisine - African fusion. A different take on traditional African cuisine. It’s authentic and interesting! Location - 536 Main Street, Kangaroo Point. (For years this space was occupied by a pretty basic and somewhat dodgy/greasy fast food place.) On a high traffic road, so there is a bit of traffic noise during the day. Less at night. But frankly, I stopped noticing after a while. Price range - OMG super cheap for what you get! Starters are about $6-$7. Mains are about $17.50 to $24. Most are on the cheaper side. Opening hours - check their website (esp during COVID-19 days). But generally open for lunch and dinner Thursday to Sunday. COVID-19 safe - yes. And they have the most wonderful and delicious smelling spray hand sanitizer on each table. Alcohol - they serve alcohol (including some tasty cocktails) but are also BYO. Beers and wines are local. I love that they stock SeaLegs beer - the brewery is literally just down the road, under the Storey Bridge. The first time I came, the beer and white wine was not cold. Afterwards I suggested that they needed the refrigerator in which they store the drinks to be colder. The second time I came back the beer was perfectly chilly. 👍 Reservations - they take (and recommend) reservations but my second visit I was a walk-in and they happily accommodated me even though they were near capacity. Family friendly - yes. Groups? - yes, but book. There is limited space. Cleanliness - yes. Everything was clean. The bathrooms too. Ambience and design - they have done really well with the design, especially given what the place used to be like. They have been thrifty but it’s worked. The feel and ambience is casual but funky. For a moment you forget that you’re on Main Street. Great background music. Tip: the free standing chairs (not bench chairs) need a cushion. They have cushions handy, so if your chair doesn’t have one, just ask. Now the important things: Food quality - this is where they get my 5 stars! My god, every dish I have tasted has been delicious. My friends have also agreed. Not one complaint or reservation. Not even from my fussy friends. I’m always reluctant to pick favourites but if I had to, then I would say the garlic chapati for starters (OMG, the best I’ve ever tasted!), for mains the Mashi (stuffed capsicum), the Misir and the Afro-Moqueca. My friends rave about the Boerewors and the Fried Tilapia Fish. However, a word of warning: If you’re precious about your fish (eg bones etc), maybe try one of the other amazing dishes. The fish dishes are for those who don’t mind navigating around the bones and scales. Value for money - did I mention how cheap this place is?! Well, it is! The baked fish or fried fish is enough to feed two people and it’s $22. Service - Be patient and understanding with them. They are new and they have employed people who might not be experienced wait staff. But they are supporting the neighbourhood and local people by employing them, even if not qualified. I can give you examples, but you know what, you should just experience it yourself and count yourself lucky to be part of a new, raw and interesting restaurant. It’s a wonderful experience. This probably also extends to a bunch of other little things. Like the beer glasses don’t actually fit a whole 375ml can of beer in them, their menu is on their website and they refer you to that when you order (although, I don’t mind this - I think it is more environmentally friendly), both times I was there they only had one chef so warned about delays up front (but neither time was the wait long, and I actually like not to feel rushed anyway), they don’t give you fresh wine or beer glasses unless you ask (again, I’m cool with this!) .... Overall - this restaurant is a real gem in the rough! Go there and experience it while you can. Your life will be just a little more enriched for it.
