This is one of the few aquatic centres in the area I've not visited before. What I found was a wide range of fish, well kept and at affordable prices. The range of swordtails and platies was particularly impressive. But that's not to say they don't have a selection of many other species as they do. The aquarist is well catered for here, tropical and cold water mainly. I must admit I don't remember seeing any marine fish. The dry goods, medication, aquariums, accessories are reasonably priced and their prices haven't been jacked up here to unreasonable levels due to the 'cost of living crisis'. Got a couple of pairs of black swordtails (not seen them anywhere else). A good aquatics centre run by fish keepers for fish keepers.

The guys here are down to earth and go above and beyond to look after you even to the detriment of a sale

Long story short: Check what you buy before you leave and question harshness of fish handling. Prepare a grave site at home. Personally? Avoid, if at all possible. First impressions: off from the start. Staff very odd and unprofessional. Went around to look at fish and realised there was alot of dead fish in each tank - after assuring the kids this was apart of life, I was seriously having doubts about getting any. Trailing of black hoses in a dark room across the floor with no warning signs of such - health and safety eat your heart out. Once kids decided to put in their order, the staff member was extremely rough with the fish placing into the bags, even flicked one from the net into the bag! I walked out thinking it was odd how we never got asked what tank we even had (size, water quality, equipment etc) or any of our knowledge. Went home, and after sitting the bags in the tank we started to really study them and, my god, they were not very well and clearly not had a good life. Out of 12 - 5 have died. Yesterday/overnight 2 had fin rot. 2 missing all fins and 1 died before we got home which was the first red flag. Back to Swallows antiques in Rayleigh we go! - I don't know why we went with another place I didn't even know existed! Lesson? : Learnt.

I purchased a fan tail goldfish and it died within 9 days. My previous 2 goldfish lived 12 years and 9 years respectively so provided good care of goldfish. Went back to tranquil and informed by shop assistant have to return in 48 hours.Pets at home have 2 weeks but this made no difference when making this point. Other comments by assistant included how much did you pay £5(actually £13). Should not matter how much - you should still get good customer service. Have emailed manager but got no reply

Bought a Lilly plant it had loads of leaches , had to sterilise , I would be very cautious with their plants in general as most holding tanks have snails.

This company have been extremely helpful and unlike many other companies they don't put fish welfare above financial gain. Extremely helpful staff and excellent advice during a recent breakout in my pond.
