If I could give a one star rating, I absolutely would. Came to visit an elderly family member today and the nurses and security guard in the front emergency entrance (because for some reason the regular from entrance was blocked off) were extremely rude, disrespectful and just all around didn’t need to be around GRIEVING families. When we first entered there was a body with a sheet over it in the emergency room, that same person was dead laying there until we left 2 and a half hours later.. I didn’t take a photo of that because it was too gruesome. Security Guard was upset when they used COVID as a reason that we couldn’t sit in a waiting room, but didn’t have any hand sanitizer in designated areas, said we could “come back another day” when brought to her attention as if freedom of speech isn’t a thing.. There was blood on the chairs, floors, that was stepped over by staffstaff was all around just extremely unprofessional. I happened to sit in the blood, and as a pregnant woman, this experience from somewhere that should be saving lives made mine feel at risk. Do better for these Veterans.

As a service connected veteran I am appalled by the service here. On the 3rd floor the receptionist(s) who check veterans in are unprofessional. One lady held up her finger and said "one second" while talking on her personal cell phone to someone she called "boo". The other was having a personal conversation with someone and she said you can go to the next lady. I don't feel they understand the sacrifice we have made.

Every *single* time I try to call to make an appointment, I am on hold for 20+ minutes. Several times I have been unexpectedly disconnected - even after speaking with someone - and, thus, have to call and wait again. I have been hung up on at least three times (and I just moved to this area). This is the worst of 4 VA systems at which I have been enrolled to receive care. I needed an appointment for a pap smear, and the patient call operator said, "they are not taking new patients," then hung up on me. Thank god I am not forced to rely strictly on VA healthcare, and I will look elsewhere to receive care; however, there are patients who have no other options, and this answer is completely unacceptable.

Honestly, if I could give “no stars” this VA would have earned it. The customer service is lousy. No one returns calls. They say that they care about the veterans experience but that is only lip service. Caring Community doesn’t care. When you go for a service at a provider, the bills are not paid. So veterans get the bills at their home. They reject a bill, quick to say that there is no authorization/referral on file but they are the ones sending the veteran to the provider. No one takes the time to look into the situation and see how it can be resolved. Once, it took me almost a year to settle a bill. I had to beg the debt collector for more time to work it out with the VA! Mind you, I had already addressed the bill with someone who told me he was going to take care of it but yet did nothing and there is no accountability. Just the veteran left to deal with the problem. This time it wasn’t a year, but it took 3 weeks and a congressional inquiry to even get one phone call. I have been to other VAs and have received wonderful service, but I can’t say the same about DC VA. Let’s talk about the pharmacy. I came to the ER, and went because I wasn’t feeling well. I normally prefer not to come to the VA unless I have to. Nevertheless, due to the holiday and my medical emergency, I went there. I spent under 1.5 hours in the ER. But spent over 1.5 waiting for meds! This pharmacy system is so antiquated! This is definitely not a 21st century operation! DC VA, you can do a lot better so veterans can have a positive experience.

This VA is not a place I would really choose to get my Healthcare from but it's what they give me. Getting seen by a specialty clinic can take months. I've experienced 3 - 6 months wait before. And even if you attempt to seek treatment through community care it will take them months to contact you to schedule an appointment with an outside clinic, although you have a confirmed consult. I'll be moving soon, and hopefully I can get to a better VA that cares about the patients.

Never used VA as a retiree. I am registered just never used it. Turns out Tricare doesn't cover audiology and hearing aids...VA does. I live just outside DC. I took the step to call the Washington VA Medical Center and register for care per the VA website. Site stated come by the office or call the number. Office is in the heart of DC...let's try the phone call. Called the number and used ext 56333 as prescribed. Automated message said experiencing longer than usual wait times...makes sense. Wait time will be longer than 3 minutes...I can handle that. If not urgent call during a less busy time...umm when would that be? Turns out I spent literally 8 hrs calling the number and experiencing 1) the phone ringing but then reverting back to the automated message or 2) the phone ringing then hanging up. I had taken the day off with no real plans and thought I would handle this task I had been procrastinating. After the the first couple hours I became determine to see how bad this VA system really is. I saw lots of reviews on how good the medical staff are. That may be so but the support system is what I feared it would be. Do a YouTube search for "trying to get an appointment to the VA hospital for my husband". Now I know why the phone never answers...absolutely terrible. Now what do I do? Drive to the heart of DC for similar service? Really? Needless to say I never completed this task.

**Someone Please Forward this to Alexandria ocasio-cortez! ASAP!!! Madam idiot or Pendeja... In Spanish!!! *** April 26,2019*** read update Below! As a concerned Disabled Veteran... I want Washington DC to see what's going on at Audie Murphy VA hospital in San Antonio Texas. I posted the Working Hours and I believe they take pride in displaying their work schedule! Everyone gets Mad but I tell them it's not a joke! Over paying employees at this so called Clinic and calling it a Hospital is "The Joke"! Knock down this clinic in San Antonio, Texas and Build us a "Real Hospital for Military City U.S.A.!" We are Proud Veterans Who vowed Duty, Honor and Country... For our GOD! We swore... We were on Duty 24/7 ~ 365 days a year... I don't care if you had a desk job or in Combat! We didn't drop everything after 8 hours and say I'll take care of it Tomorrow or maybe Monday after the weekend! At least I didn't while Being in Mobility Operations in the Air Force! January 18, 2018 Addendum... If you want a botched job... And You've never been a Guinea Pig... welcome to Audie Murphy VA Hospital of San Antonio Texas. Right before Thanksgiving 2018 I had cancer removed from my right kidney... to this day I thought I was being cared for under UT Health Science Center Doctors were performing surgery on me... little that I know I was one of several she was performing surgery on(they meet quotas this way for $$$) and she had her minions close me up, and I turned out to be a botched job which I am still deformed from it. Never select to be operated at Audie Murphy for any reason whatsoever. This is a confessional and I will go to court and swear under oath that this is the truth. I was told by a lawyer and they say that there is no way you could sue the VA Hospital so they know that and anything goes once they Operate on You... so feel pretty much like a Guinea Pig anyway! And get a Life Insurance policy! What a pathetic place for a VA clinic... it seems everybody has an attitude when they should be happy to have a job! It seems just because you showed up for either blood work, urine analysis or you just don't feel good or you hurt yourself and need to be checked out! You are a burden just by showing up. I stopped by here April 24,2019 just so I can walk across the street to save me a 4-Hour trip on the bus or two hour trip on a rainy day by car! I hate going to Audie Murphy so I stopped here just so I could get some blood drawn to see the doctor the next day! This is the second time I stopped here for assistance, the first time I walked in was back and June 2018, on a Friday a little after 4 p.m. because I wasn't feeling good but everybody had left already except the clerks and triage nurse and she checked me so she can write a report on my status! I notice when I walk my dog in the back of the parking lot, tiny alcohol bottles and beer cans all over the grass, drainage and the parking lot. I guess coming from the veterans taking a swig or drink during lunch time or right before they get off lunch... but there seems to be an issue of alcoholism in this facility! Three out of the four phlebotomist that I encountered had an attitude, one of them that has to call your name out to go in seem to have a good attitude by singing your name out and that's about all the best I could tell you about personnel working here! **** Update... April 26,2019, just goes to show you what the Hell is going on... My Dr. Yi Yang was looking for my Blood analysis on April 25,2019, and guess what he found!!!??? They only drew a fraction of the Blood Test they were supposed to!!! He asked me why the rest of my blood analysis wasn't in the system, I told him that I had "Fasted" and they only drew one tube instead of the regular 5 or 7 they normally draw. I told my Dr. Yang that and he was upset because Now he has to find out who were the Screw-Ups from the Far Northside are!!! He showed me his orders exactly what where in "The Computer". OMG!

The DC VA Operators or Phone Assistants are RUDE and very impatient! I called at 6a.m. when call volume shouldn't have been stressful and I get YELLING and SCREAMING on the line prior to being abruptly connected to radiology. This happened on 20 June 2019 at 6 a.m. I recommend SOME FORM of customer service training. But, since this ISN'T the first time this has happened. I'd recommend automating the entire department. I am SURE other VETS only want assistance with their issues NOT ATTITUDE! Automating the call center will be frustrating but AT LEAST WE WON'T RECEIVE NASTY ATTITUDES AS IF...YOU ALL ARE DOING US A FAVOR BY DOING THE JOB YOU SIGNED ON FOR!!! R. L. NELMS

After moving from Fort Worth, Texas it was time to choose a new VA center. During my first visit to enroll (in person), I was left with mixed feelings. My first appointment was over a month away for a general check up. Now that I've been back I am very satisfied with my new physician and clinic (yellow).

UNACCEPTABLE! You will be waiting a minimum of 3 HOURS or a half day to pick up medication from the pharmacy. I AM Waiting here for my ONE PILL!! One pill!!! not a narcotic either. Going on 3 hours wait, what’s the point!! And this isn’t even super busy it’s a Friday and still slow AF. No point in driving home now traffic is at its worst in dc at 3 pm on a Friday meanwhile Im watching employees run out the door. They have one lady at the counter on a Friday and everyone is mad cuz they been waiting HOURS. Is this why veterans kill them selves??

I go here often. For labs or to see a specialist. Yes it looks rusty and crowded but the staff are friendly and caring. Lots of volunteers and all of them, volunteer or not have a great attitude dealing with each patient. Normally there is not much wait there, especially if you are in time. They do go above and beyond to provide the best service possible. My big thank you to every single one of them.

There have been three deaths here in the past month that have been related to the incomptence of the staff here and complete disregard of their patients' health concerns, and I can attest to the fact that these people aren't concerned about you or your health in the slightest. I was admitted to the ER for symptoms of anaphylaxis and was supposed to be "monitored" for a few hours before getting discharged. After appropriate drugs/antihistamines were administered, I was left in the room to recover. The whole 4 hours I was there, NO ONE checked on me. NOT ONCE. It was freezing in the room and I got up to ask for a blanket (which they should have provided already). I was handed a blanket and never saw anyone's face until the nurse came in to discharge me. No one assessed my condition before discharging me. In the neighboring rooms, I could hear patients calling for help, and NO ONE attended to them. Aside from my ER visit, I have also attended scheduled appointments here. Appropriate health procedures/sanitation procedures are not practiced. Doctors do not follow up with patients. I was supposed to receive my prescriptions via mail... It's been three months, and I have not received any of my prescriptions yet. Most workers here are incompetent and should not be working in this field. If you care about your life, please do yourself a favor and seek alternative care. PS: There is an Asian lady who works in the pharmaceutical department and she is extremely rude and disrespectful to patients. I have seen her deny patients their prescriptions.

The VA wants you to call to make appointments but it's easy to be on hold for more than 30 minutes before you're disconnected. If you do go in to help get help desk staff (like in the lab on the first floor) in many departments will just look at you. No "Hello, how can I can help you?" Nothing. They just stare at you like you're interrupting something more important until you break the ice. This DC VA is consistently the lowest rated VA in the nation for a reason.

My first experience in the cafe was terrible. Taco Tuesday at 12 noon they run out of 5+ items that up make the taco bar. Only meat, cheese and lettuce was left. The problem escalated when the cashier told me I was “entitled” for inquiring about a discount considering they discounted the food. He said “well, you still ordered it”, and even tried to charge me more than the set price. When asked about it he said he was told to charge that price yet adjusted the total to the original amount listed. I spoke with Kevin (manager) to oversee this unacceptable behavior. This service was despicable. As it is acceptable to say no, it is not acceptable to dishonor and disrespect anyone. The attitude was undeserving and unprofessional.

Emergency Room is the worst at check-in in the country. Unfortunately last few times I have gone to the facility it has been awful. Now once you have triage and seen by nurses and doctors they have a tendency to recover very well. It is the people you have to deal with upon arrival. In my last visit I heard the gentleman at the front desk engage man who happened to be awaiting a ride to the homeless shelter. The way he spoke to that man was dehumanizing to say the least. There are times when some of those people can be the wretched of the earth.

10/14/21-My first time ever coming to the DC VA ER, I was admitted. I called the nurse hotline before arriving and she told me "to go ER now that staff will be waiting ", and sure enough they were... I was taken straight back for vitals and labs. The staff was very nice and attentive. They were very patient with me even with the bad brain fog I was experiencing (thyroid issues). I've heard horror stories, so I was scared about the doctors not believing me due to my lack of memory on specific details, but they kept encouraging me and performed every test they could...sure enough my body was going through a crisis state and they admitted me. The Endo doctors on call were very responsive and kept me informed on their plans to get everything under control. The ER Physicians and Nurses were equally professional, patient, and made me feel like I made the right decision to push through DC traffic to come to the VA. The ER and inpatient wards look brand new and very inviting. The ER can be scary in some hospitals, you can easily get the feeling as if you need your will in hand. Would I come here again, yes I definitely would...Veterans are being taken care of here. -Disabled Veteran

Multiple times I have called and stayed on the line for thirty minutes to an hour only to be hung up on after I reach number one. The departments you call never return messages. It takes an act of god to get through to your primary doctor. Miscommunication is a big issue here. I have not received the care that I need because my primary doctor is either confused or just doesn’t care. I swear you will either die or get worse coming to this VA location for care. I’m so tired of them.

The worst! We lay our lives in the this country and this is our reward. How does one ask for an appointment in May and we are told that we can be seen in January of the next year. Honestly, I don’t think some of the medical personnel is knowledgeable about their craft and they are numb to what some of us really need. This is apart of the reason all of the armed forces are low on numbers…..who wants to serve a country to be rewarded with care from people who really don’t care about you. We are just numbers and the actions of the staff justify us feeling this way.

You have a 1:00 pm appointment and not Seen until 2:00 pm, poor service, it is now after 2:00 pm and I still have not been called. I will continue to write reviews, you would think things would improve, the orange team eye clinic. It is now almost 2:30 pm and I still haven't been seen. To add, the fee for public transportation using Metro from Gaithersburg Md $16.00 to get there and back no reimbursement .

The worst experience I’ve ever had at an ER. I am a disable veteran and you would’ve thought I was an escape convict. The ER was not busy, 3 people in the waiting room. We all sat there for a couple hours with no one being called. I was in severe pain, so much pain that I was in tears and had to leave to drive to another hospital. I will never step foot in that place again. Brothers and sisters, if you have any other choice, go there first. This is sad.

If you want to die this is the absolutely best place to go. Been having the same infection for over a year. Was rushed to the emergency room in VA 3 times in 3 months the hospital in Virginia could only treat the emergency and discharge me and not do the proper surgery because they don’t have a consult form so therefore I would be responsible for the bill. After being discharged again last week I decided I needed a getaway from this stressful situation. Went to Florida just to relax. The day I get there the infection in the same spot comes back w a vengeance. Running 102 temps etc. did not want to get stuck in the VA in Miami I caught a emergency flight to Richmond Virginia where I was close to the Richmond VA. They saved my life. The entire team and staff w the exception of RN Loretta who should transfer to DC she would excel there. Instead of simply keep giving me antibiotics they finally addressed the real situation and fixed the problem w surgery and a game plan. It’s unbelievable how 3 surgeons who saw me for over 1 year did nothing for me but caused me anxiety and stress. Not sure who does the recruiting for the DC but they should be fired immediately. I’m my opinion the only qualified people there are Dermatology dept and Dr Mazarat. Everyone else from the executive office down is horrible. No accountability at all. I firmly believe that if I didn’t go to a different VA for treatment I would not be writing this email. Y’all suck and are horrible as an entire operation. The attorney general should investigate the 711 operation that is running here. Chick-fil-A has better customer service than this place. I’ve filed several complaints with patient advocacy which is a waste of time. The only thing good about this entire situation is the cafeteria. They are more professional than the staff

Rarely do I post reviews but I am afraid this facility needs a serious Joint Commission inspection. The doctors are great however in regards to the process of some their Departments greater heads have not prevailed. There should be absolutely no reason why there should be 2-3 hour wait at the pharmacy and only one person retrieving medication. I understand that some days you may be short staff but this is clearly a process failure. Operating your pharmacy like a 1930s pill mill is highly unsat for any medical facility. You could easily do away with pharmacy check in verification with biometric devices. Or rather than having one person collect slips it would be far more beneficial to have one person collecting slips at the desk and one runner so people are not standing waiting for one person to grab medication and slips. I would love to overhaul the process just so my future visits are more seamless.

But, secret service helped me and my kids to visit President(President of the USA) Zone of Walter Reed for CBCT for dental implantation. My mother has been there in the ER since 5:45pm it’s now 11:30pm and she is finally being seen. This place should ashamed! You’d think there would be a higher standard in regards to accommodating veterans. My mother is also a breast cancer survivor who’s been sitting there in pain this entire time! Imagine going to a place specifically for you but, the lack of professionalism and adequate staff make you feel you don’t belong!

Appointed Dr. Rachel Harrison is completely unprofessional. Upon meeting her due to military sustained injury, she rolled her eyes at me as if the sight was to much to bear. After she pointed at the chair for me to sit as oppose to common decent manners of introducing herself, I begin to tell her why I came in and after she pulled up my chart, she ask me well why you coming in here now. This information is literally spelled out in the records, that she was looking at on the screen. I have access to the records as well, again this is after I explained to her in quiet area why I came in..absolutely no listening skills but she had no problem pulling rank on me for an urgent abnormality issue that was diagnosed by the VA themselves. She ignored repeatedly when I asked to speak to patient advocate office Representative. After leaving the office due to feeling uncomfortable being around her, I was able to retrieve the patient advocate information by other members of hospital staff…she’s the chief of Orthopedic Surgery there. I pray for anyone who catches the wrath of this person’s bias when conducting surgical matters, The Hippocratic Oath just does not mean much to some any more, only their title… I advise all not to go to this location if it has such poor leadership that pulls rank on disabled veterans with abnormality disabilities that are considered urgent matters to address. John Hopkins would be a good location. More professional and respectful to disabled veterans.

VAMC in Washington, DC is an embarrassment. As a retired 05 former Army medical professional, I was extremely disappointed in low standard of professionalism and employee conduct. Perhaps most disappointing was a lack of responsiveness by "the system" to deficiencies--basically ignored. The Patient Advocacy Office was a joke. I reported incorrect Rx's,. lack of an accurate clinic/service directory, panhandling in the lobby, security personnel not present in critical areas, boisterous hospital personnel convening in hospital lobby, Cafeteria personnel loudly complaining about management and coworkers, substandard primary care, i.e. an annual physical with no lab work or hands-on exam, and incorrect prescriptions. One female doctor with inch-long fingernails, heavy makeup, high heels and no lab coat with her name consistently dressed like that while treating patients! Proper triage upon check-in by intake personnel in the Ophthalmology Clinic (waited for 3 hours) wasn't practiced, despite clear explanation of patient problem (sudden blindness post-eye surgery operation). Because time was critical, I almost went blind as a result of this lackadaisical attitude. I finally called the White House Hotline when I was denied travel reimbursement (I'm 90% disabled) for 22 appointments at a Non-VA Provider's office per the VA Doctors' orders for waiting 4 months until the eye treatments were finished to file the claim. I couldn't drive for 4 months! Zero reimbursement by the Washington, DC Travel Office. Got no help from hotline either. I finally gave up and transferred to another VAMC. ANY VAMC is better than the one in Washington, DC.

Cavier Thomas in the VA travel office did a fabulous job helping me with the travel arrangement. She went above and beyond to ensure that I was reimbursed for traveling from Maryland to the Washington DC VA. She took the initiative to herself to one was responsible for signing off on the travel voucher. She solved the problem and followed up with me days later with a notification phone call. Pay Raise immediately!! I attended the emergency room on July 14, 2023. My experience dealing with the entire staff was nothing short of phenomenal. The emergency room staff to include the police officers, security, nurses, intake, and doctors were friendly, engaging, and informative of their procedures. Although the emergency room and urgent care was filled to capacity, the staff kept a positive attitude and continually informed the patients about what was happening with their care. Secondly, two pharmacists came to the emergency room on separate occasions to inform me personally about the status of my medication and how they could help me with my needs. It has been over 40 years since visiting the hospital with my Dad and the attitudes and work ethic is second to none. Kudos Washington, D.C. VA Medical Center.

I had a bad experience at the radiology. The most painful screening Mammo and had to deal with the tech's attitude. I often feel that employees at the VA do not believe that vets deserve any health benefits. I have to get my diagnostic mammo but I can't be fooled for fourth time by VA. Do not go to Washington Radiology both in DC and Potomac, if they referred you to go outside the VA. They are horrible.

Good afternoon. Can someone direct some attention to the VA Medical center in DC. There still is too much bureaucracy. I have a service connect sleep apnea, recognized by VA. I have a CPAP already, and My VA Dr tells me VA will send me supplies. Mr. Kenneth Brooks in VA Neurology sleep center, headed by Dr. Michelle Baelish, tells me they won't send me machine supplies until I come to see their clinic. Wait I had COVID and will not use the machine until I get new mask, filter and hose. Earliest appointment the clinic can give is July 24. I guess I'll need to wait until July to get some sleep. If this is taking care soldiers, sorry Veterans, there still is a serious problem.

If you have anything less than an honorable discharge, you will be treated as inhumane and told to wait until the discharge gets upgraded to honorable under medical conditions like in my case. It's unfortunate that they judge the discharge without knowing the why and issues how things happened to have that discharge.

First appointment with VA. After waiting two weeks to been seen, not a great start. Was scheduled for a 0730 virtual with Dr. YELAMANCHILI. The doctor never joined. I work nights and only on a few hours of sleep but managed to make the call - it’s disrespectful for Dr. YELAMANCHILI to not do the same. It’s now 0814. I’ve spent an hour on with VA trying to wake her up or reschedule. Teleworking isn’t for everyone.

Eligibility never answers the phone. I’ve been calling and trying to transfer. To the DC location after moving to southern MD. I have been on hold for one to two hours each time I called. Never to ever get in touch with anyone. If something this simple is a problem. I highly doubt that the medical services are any better. This just reassures my thoughts about dealing with the VA.

Waited 2hrs to be told to wait for 4hrs, was just trying to get PTSD meds. They asked me the same questions over and over again. Meanwhile I waited in a hallway while other patients where calling for water, and blankets and being ignored. They(Nurses, Techs?) where discussing what the other patients were asking for. And then doing nothing about it. This went on for 2 hours. I was so uncomfortable with the service being provided I had to leave. Was treated like I was looking for heroin, meanwhile just trying to get some zoloft. This really sucked.

This is my second review of this Hospital but the first after an Emergency Visit and my first visit with my Primary Care. So much to complain about so please bare with me. To start my optometry appt was smooth, I came in as a homeless Veteran. I was literally sleeping on the street and showering in LA fitnesses to present myself the best I could. With me I had four bags and the nurse allowed me to leave my belongings in a vacant office as well as charge my tablet and phone. The process of getting examined went smoothly or so I thought after two Optometrist spoke to me and viewed my eyes. The first was thorough and communicated ok and the second somewhat more advanced in my opinion as the overseer completed what the first was uncertain about. Unfortunately once my glasses arrived I was dissapointed the prescription was terrible for both eyes and both lenses were/are completely off. I threw them away and wanted to complain however I'd already submit several complaints with Patient Advocate and I was exhausted with this process because there's more. My primarcy care visit I was rushed throughout the meeting, the Doctor did not listen nor did the nurse. She repeated herself several times and I also repeated myself stating my issues however I later found out she documented nothing I said. I detest going to see the VA and the only reason I gave in was due to a friend Errol Nevers who insisted I do so. Lastly the Emergency Visit in which my feet and ankles were swollen which Id never expérienced so after the third day of this I visited. This was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. I understand I am under the watchful eye, however this doesnt change how I conduct myself, maybe it should. With that being said I was treated terribly, insulted and I had to wait in order to be humiliated six hours. The final Doctor knew I was homeless yet didnt care. Story is the same for every person I met over A two week period in the DC Maryland triangle. I contacted every social worker every Vet help center every outlet and nothing until it was basically too late. I explained this to the final Doctor and her response was how is your mental health? She stated this three times and after the third time I left realizing she doesnt care and this is simply a sick game in which Im playing the fool. Makes me want to hate America and my service as well. I literally lost everything except m'y mind but it seems they want that as well.

Whoever is running the eligibility office phone needs an attitude check or a new job. Her discontent for answering phones and scheduling appointments is palpable. Hands down one of the most disrespectful 2 minute encounters I've ever had. If you don't want to work for the VA, get a new job. Not just veteran, but people in general do not deserve to be talked to in that manner.

Took my cousin in after he fell at home. It took almost forever to be seen ( if you're not bleeding most hospitals have long wait times.) When the Dr did come in, she apologised for the long wait. Then she got right to work. Next day I called up there to see how he was doing, the operator couldn't find a listening for him.... To make a long story short when I got a hold of the nurse the Drs had left for the day and she was busy. The only thing she could tell me was that he was asleep.

It’s the VA sometimes they try, sometimes they don’t 🤷🏽‍♂️. Treat it just like you would the military. Hurry up and wait. Make copies keep copies of everything. Lower your expectations. Try to make connections with ppl. Read the bulletin board in the hallways of the hospital; a lot of valuable information.

Sharing specifically about the enrollment / eligibility office. I stopped by today to get my ID photo taken for my VHIC. Everyone I came into contact with from the security guards in the parking lot, to the front desk, and especially the ladies in the enrollment / eligibility office were so helpful and kind. Although this was a quick trip, I am so pleased with the staff I came into contact with!

It's a VA hospital. Not sure what else to expect at this point in dealing with the VA healthcare system. You have to fight super hard just to be seen and get the necessary care. And, if you are lucky enough to get seen, you need a specific follow-up appointment or you will not be seen again. Except for the dental clinic (which is horrible in all aspects of administration and care), the doctors, nurses, and lab techs are pretty good and some are even great. It's the administration, front desk employees, and dental clinic that make this facility (and other VA care centers) a nightmare sometimes. You need everyone who works at the VA to have a desire to serve veterans, not just some of the doctors. The doctor's attitudes mostly seem good and they seem willing to help veterans, but what good is that when the road to seeing an actual doctor is met with everyone else trying to get you out of the system and trying to deny us care or make sure we don't care that we veterans desperately need?

This place is a lifesaver. The Virginia facilities were just impossible, a Veteran can’t even be seen within a reasonable timeframe. DC VA gives great care and I am so grateful to the staff.

I can not believe that someone has to be waiting for 10 hours in a dirty room, which we saw a roach walking across the floor and I had to kill. I could not believe that everywhere I look the dirtiness of this VA hospital. Our men and woman deserves better, and waiting for 10 hours is horrible. Something must change, who do I have to write to about the conditions of our VA hospitals.

I get to the VA. It had been some months since I had been to the VA, but I remembered being able to park fairly easily. Drove to the parking garage, it was packed to the brim. No parking available for anyone who needs the handicap access lane. Drove around the parking lots hoping to find something fast. Mind you, I arrived to the VA 40 minutes before my appointment. I finally gave up and asked one of the parking lot attendants where I could park where there is an access lane for my van's ramp. They said just take it to the valet. I had completely forgotten the valet parking was a thing here. So I drove it up, and waited another 25 minutes to get parked. I'm already 5 minutes late for my appointment. I get to the basement, then turn to my phone because Driving Rehabilitation is not marked, and GC210 isn't labelled either. There are no signs for either of these. I did not know that it was the same location as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. A nice lady saw me in the hallway, and asked me if I needed help, I said I'm trying to find driving rehabilitation. She said follow me that's my department. (pay attention to that bit) SO I wait in line for another 10-minutes. Finally I make it to the window and the 'gentleman' behind the window says something confusing.... didn't quite get what he was saying at first. He said "Hi, oh I tried to call you". He doesn't have my name yet, or reason for my visit or know anything about me other than I'm an amputee in a wheelchair at first glance. Me: "I'm here for driving rehabilitation". Him: "Yes Sir I tried to call you to cancel your appointment (fires off name of person I'm supposed to see rapidly) won't be in . I tried to call you but you didn't answer." Me: "Funny, the only call I've had from the VA is the one to confirm my appointment for today". Him: -insert disingenuous apology so he can dismiss me so he can get to the next person in line- Me: "OK then" Him: "She should reach out to you in the next couple of weeks to reschedule when she's back in the office". Thing is, I have no missed calls, no blocked calls, no texts, and no voicemails, and no emails from anyone from the VA, except the one call around 3PM 2 days before my appointment, which was the automated system asking me to confirm my appointment, which I did. It seems to me that an OIG complaint is in order. If I'm wrong about this, you can look me up by name and clear things up for me.

Support staff don’t care about you and the doctors are so busy they don’t care either. Went in for a checkup because this is my primary care and the doctor straight up told me he didn’t have time for me if I didn’t have any pressing problems because he was late to a shift in the ER. When I *do* receive care it’s usually good care, but good luck actually getting any doctors attention or time to help.

For the most part my experience with the VA have been good. Sometimes the call and appointment lines take forever and hang up, and sometimes the personnel I speak to are grumpy but overall the service is good, the ER is relatively efficient, I can reach my Dr or their team with ease, and, aside from one ER incident with a certain Dr. I feel heard and well treated. My medications come fast, and the variety of programs is nice. Thank you for your service !

Doctors are great and that’s where the positive part of this review ends. PA’s are unprofessional and lack skills and experience, the nurses are rude and uncaring. The staff is disrespectful and lacks attention to detail, resulting in countless mixups and errors-with real life consequences on people’s health. It makes me really sad to see America’s veterans treated this way, they deserve so much better.

I’m active duty and my husband is a veteran. He had an appointment this morning and I just happened to go in because I needed to use the restroom. The attitude of the staff is terrible! They do not care in the least who you are or what you’ve done. They could at least show a little respect, especially on a holiday. Although most of the staff was surprised that “today was even a holiday and had no idea.” The heck?! Really.. Then.. The admin ladies at the front desk of the ER DO NOT listen to words coming out of the persons mouth that is standing in front of them trying to get care. They asked my husband the same thing twice and was given the same answer. Then she had the nerve to say “oh I didn’t know that” uh what.. not to mention he has an appointment but waiting in the ER where it is full and I’m sure many people have been sitting there for hours. I see more movement of staff than patients. The building is old and just poorly kept and right across the street you have a great looking MedStar. This place needs some serious turn over or people who just genuinely care. It’s harder to be rude to someone than it is to be nice! Especially for those who have put their lives on the line for those sitting in the admin chairs! Come on folks! Embarrassing man. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Our vets deserve more. I see why so many of them say that no one cares about them.. it shows in this dang hospital. I wouldn’t go in either.

I've been getting medical care at the DC Medical Center for about 18 months, and it's a mixed bag. The pharmacy seems to work reasonably well, and primary care appointments scheduled online have worked. Specialty care appointments can be a mess: 1) calling through central scheduling often results in being number 40 inline (a 30-minute wait) and then sometimes drops before being answered, 2) calling the specialty clinic directly sometimes works, but more often the voice mailbox is full and the line drops, or I leave a message which never gets returned. Management follow-up often appears lacking. Fortunately, for me, Medicare has many more choices and less annoying problems, and I plan to do most of my future care through it.

This letter's to recommend Cecilia (Garland?) as nurse of the year. She was my nurse at rthe COVID-19 ward on the 4th floor at the DCVA medical center She was excellent beyond belief. In my short time here I've witnessed her skills and she's amazing. I have no reservations in giving Cecilia my recommendation for awards, raises and promotions. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or feel the need to discuss her skills any further. Also, if there's any way possible that I may qualify for a private nurse, I'd surely prefer her. I salute her and her kind only. Respectfully, Sydney D. Bolling

My most enjoyable and professional VA visit ever. I am a patient at the Yellow Clinic and had my appointment on FRI 15 APR 2022 w/ Dr. Benton. Routine physical and continued evaluation of service-connected issues. The Medical and Lab Technicians were cheerful, polite and engaging and the Phlebotomist Tsedey was amazing. I thought the Women’s Clinic would be a step above the rest of the hospital when it came to competence but I was wrong. Every time I have a phone appt, a nurse will call me the day before to confirm and ask a bunch of weird questions. Each and every time I’ve had to explain and remind them that they needed to call a certain number depending on my schedule for that week. Every time I ask them what number they should be calling, it’s they say the wrong one MULTIPLE times despite them saying they made a note of the right one. I’ve “missed” two appts now because they have FAILED to take note on what number they are supposed to be calling. When I call the office to explain that I was expecting a call, I get told I need to reschedule because I missed it. The incompetence runs rampant in this hospital and it’s a shame that this is what our veterans have to deal with.

This was my first visit to a VA facility. After so much bad press about VA medical care, I was mentally prepared for a nightmare. Frankly, I was stunned by the friendly and helpful people, from the contractors controlling traffic and access, to the check in personnel, to the nurse and doctor. I came back a couple days later for a hearing assessment, and was again blown away, leading me to believe that customer service is a characteristic and not an accident. I wandered into the wrong location for the appointment, and a random employee asked if I needed help, then walked me all the way to the correct building and office. Usually when you go to a large facility, you run into someone who wants to make your day a little harder, but not at this Center. Even if navigating DC streets is challenging, this will remain my go-to VA facility.

My doctor is great so the review isn’t about them. The pharmacy is terrible, I’m 100% but they didn’t have my medication when they should’ve and I had to pay 3000 dollars out of my pocket for my meds. I filed a formal complaint and sent my receipts off for reimbursement. it’s been over a year, no one has contacted me and I have NOT been reimbursed despite everyone saying I would be. I needed that medication but the reason I was given for them not having it was you’re too young and a woman, we are used to old men here. News flash people in their 30s are veterans too. Caring for all patients regardless of age or gender is imperative. ENT doctor missed medical issues that were confirmed via MRI. Traffic and parking is usually a hassle to get here. Dental is a joke. Since I got out I have needed a lot of dental work done but they are booked out months and months and community care for dental is a joke. They say they cover 100% disabled p&t folks but they don’t. I’ve been waiting over a year for dental follow up but you can’t reach anyone. Patient advocacy is a farce. You don’t get call backs or real help. The people who work at the VA don’t seem to care about the way they talk to you or how they treat veterans. It’s embarrassing. I refuse to waste my time driving an hour+ to this va. Use the app, speak directly to your doctor, cut out the middle man and ask for community care referrals. Specialists out in town will jump through hoops to solve problems. Not here If you enjoy living life use anybody else other wise prepare to wait on the phone for 30+ minutes, get hung up, or not receive the specialty care you need. This VA should be an absolute last resort. I only stay because my doctor is great and very responsive via the app. They are the best doctor I’ve had since I’ve separated. Other doctors have been condescending and dismissive. The fear of experiencing that again keeps me with my current dr but if not for them I’d be driving to West Virginia

When I call and wait on hold to make an appointment they will use a tactic of pick up the phone start saying hello and hang up right away. I have called on two different phone each a different service provider, it is not a service related thing.

Nothing wrong with the actual care teams but the admin side is terrible. I've had scripts not actually be filled and takes 2+ weeks to get (after I refill them). They use a 3rd party that told me I opted to drive into the city to pick up my prescription (which I did not). When I got there, I was told it has been shipped and has been sitting at a UPS facility for a week. I've scheduled phone appointments recently only to never get a call. This place is a mess.

I've had to go in here a few times for exams and such. What a dump! It's old and decrepit with hand written signs on things. The doctors here are some of the worst I have ever encountered. Not to mention, you have the pleasure of getting hit up for spare change as you walk a gauntlet of beggars when heading towards the front door.

Being referred to a neurologists is a bit scary, but my visit with Dr. Taha Gholipour was the best experience I've had with any doctor in more than 20 years. In general, getting timely and compassionate medical care today in America is impossible. But, Dr. Gholipour is the exception. First, and most importantly, he took his time listening to me as I explained my list of symptoms. He asked me a lot of questions and showed genuine concern. That NEVER happens with most doctors any more. I didn't feel like just another nameless person being rushed out of the exam room as quickly as possible. He referred me to another specialist, and I can only hope I get the same level of attention that I received from Dr. Gholipour.

A visit to the VA DC was not bad at all. I arrived, parked and was given a mask when I entered the facility. I think that was helpful in the fact that I didn’t have to go back to my vehicle to grab one. The info desk person was helpful in giving me directions to where I needed to go. I was able to get to my docs office to drop off my record and was happy to see that she came out to visit with me at the front desk. I am happy that there was consideration and care for taking the time to make a patient feel comfortable by answering questions. Truly great. I’m looking forward to my future appointments. In and out appt - have had other appts here but must say it is what it is with a wait - they see a lot of patients here. If you go to another doc office maybe less if a wait but they also see less patients a day. So just set your expectations.

Prior to my initial visit Im posting to begin a trail. Protocol can not be avoided regardless of situation based on this morning. I suppose it is what it is, however if someone is volunteering he or she should be in the mindset of a volunteer not a dictator, unless the goal is to get a rise out of people. People/clients/Veterans calling dont need to hear the same sentences repeated over and over especially if calling is the last thing we or I in particular want to do,(DAV office[Harriette]) if thats her real name. Secondly, all other calls were simple being that most likely professionalism was taught or learned as well as empathy however volunteers should undergo a training to prevent lost causes due to inappropriately addressing concerns. Ill reply again after or if I visit. Id rather not continue visiting places where people intentionally cause disruption, drama or friction due to whatever excuse or stigma attached to callers such as myself or just me. Honestly this behavior is why I speak ill of the VA and the country i served, its all too familiar and quite frankly Id rather not play this game.

The service I received was 5 stars. The environment was not. First, aesthetically that is simply a donated looking interior. 2nd I asked someone that works there where a section was and they had no clue. Ok better hope there’s not an emergency on your floor cause that person would be lost wasting time looking. 3rd, I’m waiting to go into surgery in the bed & there’s an argument about wearing masks. Lady, you have patients about to have surgery why are your raising up people nerves? The ventilation ducts haven’t probably cleaned in idk because the vents were not too clean and I believe there was spotting on the ceiling crud. 4th the staff was great. I can’t stress that enough. Maybe I’d need to go back but I’m sure it looks gloomy in that facility. Oh my surgery room looked like a ROLE3 operation room that’s all peace.

I have utilized the services of the VA in Washington, DC for many years. Not one time have I ever received anything less than exemplary service. There are simply too many people to thank for all their kind service. Just this week alone, a cadre of folks stepped up to literally ensure I had the routine care I needed to infuse myself for the disease I have. From Page, a pharmacist I’ve never met, to Mrs Jackson and her staff in prosthetics, also a group I’ve never met, and my primary care doctor, Dr Goraya of the green team, I received unparalleled care this week to ensure I stay healthy and have the supplies and drugs I needed. I simply become angry when I hear anyone bash this incredible institution. The staff, without exception, from medical, to labs, to pharmacy and all support groups have my love, my admiration, and my eternal thanks. You are simply the best. William D. Whittaker

VA - where support staff rides out a fed position & does the least in your favor. #1 Know your patient advocate team, keep track of your doctors(they come & go being in a large city.) Know that as a patient you have rights to accurate documentation & efficient service. Keep the VA accounatble for poor service.

Tried calling in to set up an appointment and the operator was rude. But other than that been trying to set up a neurology appointment for over a year now. They keep saying they are calling me, but I have not received any calls. Other VA departments never have a problem calling. But, overall this VA facility and department is one of the worst health facilities I have ever experienced. I would recommend just never even trying because it's like a 1/100 chance you'll be seen or even hear from someone. (Exclusive to only neurology department) Need to hire some new people who care for others

If I could give this hospital zero stars, I would. Can't get a reasonable appointment for ANY department. No one answers the line, no one knows the correct transfer number, and don't even think about showing up to the emergency room. By the time you get seen, the doctor you want/need to see will be gone. Trust me everyone is there to just collect a check including the nurses/doctors. Veterans listen to me and listen well, Google some information and call around to see if you qualify for community care coverage and get with a civilian doctor asap! These people DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.

I recently had a not-so-great interaction with an employee named Lewis while trying to refill my prescription. Despite my frustration with the ongoing issue, it would have been better if he had been more understanding and helpful. I understand it's not his fault, but his attitude over the phone was unprofessional. It's important for customer service representatives to be respectful and provide assistance. Hopefully, the VA can address this issue and improve their service.

😠 I wouldn’t suggest this hospital for young inexperienced first time black moms. I’m 28 and I was told this was a decent hospital however I was given poor care by the staff here. It was one point for 3 months I wasn’t seen by my doctor and was only getting ultrasounds monthly. I didn’t know any bette...

Everyone from the medical staff was very kind and caring from the person who took my vitals, the PA, and X-rays staff. The PA lis...

I waited 2 hours before I was called and after been place in the patient waiting roo...

😠 Dealing with AllCare has without a doubt been the worst experience I’ve ever had with any doctor’s office. Doctor Duke can’t be bothered to fill out a simple form my insurance company needs so I can get my prescription. His office told me that the insurance company declined to cover the cost, but...
