A beautiful setting for this Priory and Castle giving you great views along the coast and out to sea. You can buy a guide book, but there are three information boards on this site which provide you with a brief history of the place. It's Wheelchair accessible and toilets on site. Hadn't realised it was Pre-Booked tickets, but booked online just 5 minutes ahead of entering.

“Each to their own.” I am someone who loves beautiful scenery, nature, good food, and most especially, a place that is rich in culture and history. If you’re the same as me, then this one is for you! Truly, a feast to my eyes. I am in awe. If you wanted to take beautiful photos for memories or have a new profile picture, Tynemouth Priory and Castle will not disappoint. I felt a surge of emotions when I saw the ruins. The mighty castle before turned to an attraction and education makes me sentimental. Years from now, our fate and homes could have the same fate with the people who lived there. The houses and establishments before going to the castle are in Victorian style. Just imagine that instead of cars, there are carriages! Oh my! #BridgertonFeels There are many restaurants in the area so you do not need to worry if you feel hungry. If you wanted to travel more to other English Heritage sites, I suggest you to have a membership so you’ll get discounts.

What a fantastic venue to hold a food festival. More councils should make use of historic ruinous buildings. Families with fold out chairs, blankets for picnics, food & drink vendors, and a live music stage - all for only £4 entry. Superb!

If you visiting English east coast , pop in to visit Priory and Castle. Its situated above beach , and behind you could find small town centre with great restaurants and pubs which lures local tourists for a meal and drink. Down bellow on beach itself you could spot some surfers at summer time ,as its shallow and creates nice mild waves perfect for beginners. Great place and people out there.

If it's a lovely day it's a great time to visit as is the case on most coastal places. There isn't a huge amount to see here but it's a lovely walk and some great views at the back end of the priory looking out over the sea. Parking can be a problem as there isn't much parking so be prepared to walk if needed. There is a carpark down a steep hill nearby too but again it's a steep walk.

Lovely spot by the sea. Bit of history and a nice walk. Parking near by and lovely sea views. Dog friendly and toilets available. Also an ice cream van outside on hot days. Easy to walk to Tynemouth market or the Collingwood memorial

Took a trip from Newcastle to experience the coast and was not disappointed. Loved walking the grounds of these ruins and learning the history both old and modern of this site. Affordable ticket fee. I am only sorry I wanst able to stay for the evening ghost walk.

I have visited this place on quite few occasions now, I never get bored of visiting. There is so much history. Plenty to see from the old priory to war artefacts. Lots of information boards dotted around. It is definitely worth a visit.

Lovely scenery and lots of history but if you don't have membership to the English heritage I'd personally give it a miss, for the price it's not that big and will take only 10-30mins to explore what's on offer

This is my hometown although I live many miles away its still my favourite place on earth. Its still worth a visit with some graves dating from the 9th century. Tynemouth itself has everything an upmarket seaside town needs. No amusements. Lots of places to eat, a weekend Market and a beautiful hotel, the grand.

Haven’t visited the inside of the castle but it already looks stunning in the outside. A lot of cafes nearby which is great spot for tourists who want to have a great view of the coast and to fill their tummies in😀 you can as well enjoy the beach below. Will be going back again to look what are stored inside

Beautiful place! There is a long stretch that leads up to a lighthouse that gives beautiful views of the North Sea and the back of the Priory and Castle, gorgeous detail to the brick and building. Dogs can go to as long as they are on the lead!

Excellent place for a visit, especially when on such a sunny day. The site is well laid out, with the priory and castle, juxtaposed with 20th century WW2 gun placements. The views are spectacular.

Great priory and castle grounds to visit. There is so much to see here; you can easily spend a few hours here. Tynemouth sits on the coast and the views are amazing. The priory was protected by the castle walls, towers and gatehouse. After the monastery was suppressed in the reign of Henry VIII (1509–47), Tynemouth headland became a coastal fortress and remained so until 1956, because of its strategic position at the mouth of the river Tyne.

English Heritage property spanning hundreds of years, still being used in the 60s for the army. This is a large property, with the remains of a gatehouse/castle, which you can walk around, there's little rooms, spiral stairs etc. There's the old priory which is really amazing - totally in ruins, with a beautiful tiny Chapel, and then there are the WW1 & WW2 armourments at the edge of the coast. The gravestones, amazing landscape and beach views are stunning, you can see the pier and the Collingwood statue easily from the priory walls. Toilets and shop on site. We parked (motorhome) only about 50 yards from the site, street parking huge bays (£2.20), running alongside the site is a road down to a free carpark, but it's quite a hike back up to the entrance. English Heritage have quite a lot of events advertised for this property during the summer hols. Admission for two grey haired folk was £8.50 each - bargain !!!

An old priory mostly in its ruins. The site is managed by English Heritage and free for the members while non members will have to pay. Vast area and very good sea view. It has a stunning view of the Tynemouth lighthouse. That which is still in its original position will be the chapel in the priory. The interior of the chapel reminded me of something I saw in St Giles cathedral in Edinburgh.

A great place to take the kids on a nice day. Great value if you get the day pass allowing unlimited time on the inflatables, a round of crazy golf and the maze. Also includes an ice cream and some chocolate coins in the maze. All are really well done. The maze was fun but is a little scary in places for young children.

First Castle been to with powerchair. Got around well enough. Due to current restrictions there are barriers along the entry way, so it would be best to park on Front Street and trundle over. Parking on Sea Banks seems convenient, but is not recommended for wheelchair users heading for the castle - serious lack of drop curbs.

  • 5/5 Sophie L. 3 years ago on Google

Didn't go into the priory and castle but what a great place Tynemouth is. Lovely beaches, walking, restaurants and bars. Disappointing that the council had closed the only public toilets for Covid. Everyone else has gone to great lengths to make safe provision - the council could be doing more. But a great place and well worth a revisit

English Heritage property. We have been going to Tynemouth for 25+ years but had never visited the priory before. Bigger than we expected inside. Some bits are well preserved but some, including records, were destroyed when it was used by military. Great views over Tynemouth Village, out to the North Sea and down the coast. Plenty of room for children Nd for picnics.

  • 5/5 Gemmy 3 years ago on Google
We had a great day here! The staff are super friendly and helpful, they gave the girls a task of finding the 5 buried pirates and next time we go they have to find the 2 graves with a sun and a moon. Good places to sit and have a picnic and the gift shop had some great things to buy!

My family have lived up here for 7 years but it was the first time I’ve visited the inside of the Priory. It’s a lot bigger than it looks and is a beautiful old building which has been very looked after. There is a lot of outdoor space which are ideals for picnics or relaxing (the views are great too!). The staff are also lovely and the gift shop is super cute.

  • 5/5 Gustav B. 3 years ago on Google
The Tynemouth Priory and Castle is a truly historic place! The entrance is not free, so it can get costly for larger families. However, it's definitely worth a visit. Some fantastic views and also an opportunity to learn about the history of the Northeast. There is a small gift shop, too. Would definitely recommend!

Not much to say as I refused to pay entrance fee. Its beautiful, very picturesque and a real prize for Tynemouth but who decided on the prices. Needs a rethink because when we were there more people turned away than went in.

Did not actually go into the Priory this time,as been before. But on the Sunday that I visited Tynemouth the weather was glorious and after stepping off the train at said place I strolled around the market that is situated situated on the Railway Station. So many stalks selling new items and pre loved goods on sale. The market was very busy and people of all ages were walking around soaking up the atmosphere and looking for bargains etc etc. Lots of takeaway food available also to purchase there and 'collectibles'. Covid seemed like a memory as everyone forgot about social distancing,a good idea ? Probably not it did to me feel a bit complacent given the dreaded pandemic is still causing suffering . However my day was pleasant and the weather remained very warm all the weekend. Was going to get lunch out and had seriously thought about visiting the local fish and chip shop, but decided instead to take a packed lunch and sit by the sea. Actually it was a good idea because the queue for that particular building stretched down the street,Longsands if I remember correctly was the name of the building and it also offers inside seating. It did look as though it was a very popular place to eat. Not many other shops in Tynemouth to visit especially if you're looking for a small souvenir to purchase at a 'smallish' price! The purpose of my visit however was to spend a day or a good part thereof relaxing . Quite a number of people were down on the beach which to me looked golden and well kept, although it was admittedly from the wall near the Priory that I viewed it. People I feel were thankful to be able to get out and about again and enjoy the surroundings.

Tynemouth Priory and Castle is a historic site located in Tynemouth, England. It is a combination of a ruined Benedictine priory and a 13th-century castle. The site is perched on a rocky headland overlooking the North Sea, and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The priory was founded in the 7th century, and was one of the most important religious centers in Northumbria. It was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century, but was rebuilt in the 11th century. The castle was built in the 13th century, and was used to defend the priory and the town of Tynemouth from attack. The site is now owned by English Heritage, and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the ruins of the priory and the castle, and enjoy the stunning views from the headland. There is also a museum on the site, which tells the history of the priory and the castle. Tynemouth Priory and Castle is a fascinating place to visit, with a rich history. The ruins are well-preserved, and the views from the headland are breathtaking. The site is also a popular spot for walkers, cyclists, and birdwatchers.

One of the beautiful scene in UK. Cold in winter so please bring a coat with you. Dogs will like to run freely in this place. Waves and tides are actively dancing. Restaurants and couples of car parks nearby. Excellent choice for spending a weekend with your friends or family here. Lastly, I love the seat which put there very much, it was well designed and be put at some perfect positions, I will draw something or read few pages on the seat in front of the sea and make friends with the birds.

Another place in the North East steeped in history. A scenic ally located Priory and fortified headland. Excellent storyboards laid out to describe the events. Great views of the sea and Tyne estuary. From ancient to modern are encapsulated within its walls. No parking but there is close by No cafe so take a picnic

Timed our visit to coincide with the knights tournament and so glad we did! The knights certainly went for it and were great entertainment! The priory is located close to the high street which offers plenty of parking and opportunities for refreshments

👍👍 I was told that this park was really nice by my air bnb host. So I decided to check it out on the weekend and I was not disappointed. It was a beautiful park that was well maintained. There's a wide selection of stuff for kids in the play area. Great for walks with dogs too.
