What an amazing find this place was! This place is the most amazing location to check out Durham. The pub downstairs is the ideal venue to start and/or end your evening. All the staff were lovely and the breakfasts were cracking! Really clean and comfy bed. For us, this was perfect. So much so, I have recommended this to a larger group of my friends (couples) as a place we all come for day out in Durham. I would say, if you are the type of person that runs your hand over every surface in the room looking for a bit of dust, or spend lots of hours in the room expecting a cinema size tv..... This is not for you my friend. Pay 3 times the price and book elsewhere. We had an amazing stay, great beer and food and thank all the staff for this. We will be back. Thanks again.

Visited yesterday 2/11 to meet a friend and the bar service was so brilliant we ended up staying all afternoon. The beers on offer were just great and the barmaid on duty was just fantastic going out of her for table service knowing my friend has trouble walking. Well recommended.

Did not stay in a room. We just popped in for food on a recommendation. Staff were attentive and very friendly. The inside was very clean and tastefully decorated. Service was friendly and efficient, and the choice of food had something to suit the majority of tastes. We opted for garlic mushrooms and the garlic ciabatta and mains of surf n turf hanging skewer and the steak stroganoff. All were hot, well presented, and tasted beautiful. Unfortunately, we had no room for dessert but will return to try. A button bursting afternoon out.

Lovely staff. Great drinks. Perfect breakfast. Clean rooms with a view. What more could you want?!

The reason for the low mark is there was a very long hair in my food. Server stated the chefs had short hair. Barman had a huge beard and long hair. Took the dish and drinks off the bill. Puts you right off.

Baking hot inside on a mild day, radiators full blast. Nice pub, seemed to be in the throes of managerial change though. Excellent one pint, then had to leave cause of the heat!

Fast, friendly and efficient check in. Very comfortable room and beds and generous, delicious breakfast, all served with a smile. The nearest accommodation to the railway station so ideal for us.

Went to an informal wedding reception here on 3 June. The kitchen catered for around 30+ guests. Food was fresh, pkentful, cooked to order and delicious. Highly recommend.

Stayed 1 night in room 6 for our wedding anniversary just to get away, I should have stayed home, extractor fan right outside our window kept us awake all night very noisy turning on and off all night, sweaky floor boards, sent a email to management no response, if you stay in this hotel refuse room 6 , breakfast fine staff pleasant, very very disappointing it really spilt our anniversary, never again staying here, lucky I'm giving it 2 stars

Four of us booked for the Christmas fayre meal. So glad that we did. The food was lovely. So tasty and plenty of it. The service was also very good, it was reasonably priced too. The pub had a lovely friendly atmosphere , so it was easy to relax and enjoy the night.

Very friendly, welcoming staff, we were made to feel really at home. We stayed in the rooms at the pub, they are relatively basic but very comfortable and clean and excellent value for money. We had lunch at the pub which was also very good, menu to suit all tastes, very reasonably priced and good service. Breakfast is included in the room prices and that was also very good. Good value and good service all round.

I found it hard to believe it's a 3* establishment. The windows were absolutely filthy. The horific photos of the bathroom speak for themselves. Housekeeping seems to be a distant memory. It's obviously not been inspected for too long. The only redeeming factor was the breakfast.

A good pub/hotel with excellent bar and restaurant service. Food was well prepared but menu not much variation. Room was ok, and clean but lacked refinement. Dripping hot tap in ensuite, no housekeeping given although advertised. Good hot water and effective shower. Very convenient for station and ten minute walk into city centre.

Great traditional pub with excellent service. Warm and welcoming as soon as you enter. Dog friendly with treats and water offered. Table service on a tab was unusual but very much appreciated. Our 2nd visit we had Sunday lunch which was lovely. Nice beer, nice food, nice staff. Well worth a visit.

We often pop in the bridge and are always greeted with a friendly warm welcome. And there Sunday dinners are fabulous.

Came in for my sisters 60th quite a large party of us. The food was lovely and the gent that kept dropping by our table was so pleasent but, I'm saddened to say the 2 young girl whom did the majority of Our service made us feel like an inconvenience. Not sure of the name of the gent with the ginger beard who has served us on previous occasions but, what a great asset he is to the place

Stayed for 2 nights, just 5 minutes walk into the centre so great location, good bar atmosphere, choice of cooked breakfast options, room was good size with tea and coffee facility, bathroom bit outdated but plenty of hot water. The reason for 3 stars is the emergency light in the room which was bright green and was on all night we asked for this to be turned off but staff said this was not possible so this attributed to lack of sleep for our 2 nights stay.

Would have given this pub a higher score but two things let it down. 1st my pint was flat and didn't taste right so I took it back to the bar, they pulled another and again that wasn't right the manager came over and said in 25 years no one has ever complained about the fosters in here....I felt a little belittled and I find that hard to believe that not one person has ever complained about a beer! 2nd issue I was in with my family and a big group of men came and sat right next to us and we're shouting and using vulgar language right next to us! Even turned around and looked at us! The staff and management walked right past them not asking to keep the language and shouting down! Yes it's a pub, yes I can understand that you do expect a little but they have kids menus on the tables so expect families to come in, bit not if they let big groups use the language they were using! Mind you the food was fresh, nicely presented and tasty and reasonable priced.

Spot on food off the specials board. Dropped in just before the rugby, but still made us a table and to feel welcome. Great food and service.

Absolutely love this place, a traditional watering hole with well kept beers and comfy seats. Stayed in the rooms and they were fantastic, like staying in a stately home. Really good breakfast too with unlimited filter coffee
