Stayed at this exquisite establishment for 8 nights, I can't recommend this place enough, if I could rate it a 10/10 i would !! From the minute of my arrival the proprietors gave a warm reception and staff were very professional and tended to every need. The rooms are stunningly decorated and equipped with everything you need, their attention to detail exceeded my expectations. Breakfast is included and served in a beautiful comfortable surrounding with a great choice on the menu, you will not be disappointed as the food served not only tastes amazing but is presented with such detail. I look forward to returning back soon. Well done to the proprietors and all involved with team Clifton. X

It’s my second time staying at The Clifton. It didn’t disappoint. Hosts and staff are very friendly and helpful. Our family room was very comfortable and I love the decor I even decorated my own bedroom similar. Great choice on the menu at breakfast and cooked to order so it’s nice and hot. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else….

We just came back from a 3 night stay at the Clifton and would definitely stay again. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the rooms were clean, well decorated and comfortable. The location is very convenient with the sea front and metro both easy walking distance. The code entry system and WIFI both worked well. The breakfast was full of choice and excellent quality. Having researched carefully for our stay I think I chose well and this is probably the best hotel in South Shields. The real mark of the quality of this Hotel was that as we were visiting family, people wanted to meet us and they organised an afternoon tea in a private room so we could all be together and even our older family members (a little deaf and maybe talking loudly....) could feel comfortable. This was really lovely and the quality of the cakes and sandwiches was very good. We really appreciated this. Thank you.

Visited Coffee shop today with my Mam and sister, for a birthday treat. The staff were very helpful and customer service was great. Coffee shop space itself was calming and really comfy. Even though it was super busy , there was no rush and a great atmosphere. Highly recommend, food very well presented and not greasy at all and best of all a fabulous cup of tea x

This was our 3rd or 4th stay at the Clifton. The staff are wonderful the rooms are gorgeous, breakfast is out of this world and the fact that it’s dog friendly is an absolute godsend when we’re visiting family. Keyless system is safe and sanitary and the whole building SMELLS AMAZING. We love it here. If you need absolute silence on a summer or weekend night ask for a room at the back - it’s Ocean Road after all!

This is our 2nd year that we have stayed at the Clifton, and like last year, thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay. It is so warming to be greeted by friendly staff, and to be remembered our selves. All the staff we met were extremely helpful, polite, friendly and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was 5 star. Our son missed breakfast one morning, and as we were going on a long day out, Callum got him some sandwiches made up, to eat on the train to our destination. The accommodation is extremely clean and some of the decor is very quirky and unique, compared to some places which are standard fixtures and fittings, making it, for me, stand out from the rest. The food is of top quality, and the lunch/afternoon menu has portion sizes way better than most hotels. Ideally located for the seafront making access to this within a 5 minute walk, and local restaurants on the door step. One of thee best hotels I've stayed in, 5 stars from me, and highly recommended to anyone.

The Clifton high tea was very good the food was both tasty and beautifully presented. The one minus point would be that the teapot for two should come with the accompanying pot of boiling water. This would allow patrons to pour tea to their preferred strength.

First time back after 2 years and found lots of changes have been made and the hotel now extended into the next building. Love the updates and that the rooms are as well presented as when I first stayed. The team are professional and welcoming with nothing being too much trouble. Great breakfast selection which is always well presented and consisting of quality produce.

What a fantastic hotel! The single room was very comfortable and had everything I needed for the stay. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was to die for. Perfect location, short walk in either direction to the sea front and to the centre so will absolutely be looking to stay again in the future.

This is a stand out hotel in South Shields. We received a warm welcome. The whole hotel is well presented, clean and modern. We stayed in a superior room which was a great size and we felt was worth the extra cost. The breakfast was excellent too with a great choice of things on the menu. The parking is street parking and despite us arriving at 6pm on a Friday night we still found plenty of spaces. Tip: if you can't get a space on Ocean Road, go to Henry Nelson Street which is at the side of the hotel, maybe avoid the smaller of the two car parks on Dale Street as it didn't look too safe when we got there so we decided not to leave the car there and moved to Henry Nelson Street instead.

Beautiful decor and ambiance. Sampled a delicious Full English breakfast from a wide range of breakfast options. Our table had a number of specific requests regarding alterations which were all carried out perfectly. Customer service was excellent and the food was delicious and well presented. We will certainly be returning to see their afternoon menu.

Went for Christmas afternoon tea yesterday, can honestly say it's the BEST ever!! A selection of finger sandwiches, pig in blanket, mini quiche and vol au vent, a great selection of cakes (the carrot cake was to die for) and a trifle. Every single item was absolutely delicious if I could give it more than 5 stars I would. All of this was topped off with wonderful, friendly staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We will be back throughout the year but will most definitely be booking for the Christmas tea next year. Thank you The Clifton for starting off our Christmas in the most perfect way!

Scott and Liz are very accommodating nothing is too much trouble, we had a lovely 4 night stay with them, the rooms are clean and modern, the breakfast is very tasty. I would recommend the Clifton to anyone wanting to visit South Shields it is a great location for the beach, town and transport links.

We visited the coffee place today. Staff was friendly and very helpful. We had lattes to drink and steak and egg for breakfast. The food was absolutely amazing and filling! The place looks so cosy and beautiful inside. Comfortable chairs. I would definitely go there again and I would recommend it to others. 5 stars!

We had lunch twice while staying local, dog friendly, lovely stylish place and fabulous food, gluten free options on most lunch menu items, staff professional and friendly, we'll definitely return when in the area again

Disappointing, my family had booked the ground floor room for an aged relative who had difficulty with stairs. When she got there late but had let Clifton know they had given the room away. She left with no option but to take an upstairs room. We will have to be very assured that the booking will be honoured before we would consider booking again.

WOW WOW WOW!! Firstly what a warm welcome we received from the owner Scott absolutely lovely so happy to meet his guests. Checked us in and guided us to our room, 18, this is one of the guest suites and all I can say is how lovely this hotel is. The moment you arrive you can tell this business is loved and taken care of with investment into all areas to improve things for their guests. The curb appeal stands out on the street for the absolute right reasons. It’s gorgeous from The outside it flows and continues throughout the entire property the theme and colour scheme throughout. So many lovely touches that make this hotel not only modern but feel a little place of home from home. Really surprised by an independent hotel invest in up to date technology and innovation, from entire keyless entry of the front door to your room via keypad entry systems, to the Google assistant in your room. The Wi-Fi is super fast throughout too! The welcome pack is heartwarming and a lovely introduction to the entire team, a genuine passion and joy pour out on each page. Although there wasn’t an iron or ironing board in the room. A quick call and this was immediately delivered to our room with pleasure. The bed was incredibly comfortable and I love the mattress, medium firm and you can tell exceptional quality. Our room lights did trip a couple of times, but this wasn’t a huge issue and the fuse panel was reset, it certainly didn’t affect our stay. Breakfast was hot and delicious, the entire staff welcoming and friendly, the surroundings again just beautiful. If you are visiting the area I can’t recommend this venue more highly. You will not regret staying and if booking please book directly to ensure this family run business receive every penny of your fee rather than a booking site. They clearly reinvest into this hotel. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Book today you will not be disappointed! To the entire team, especially Scott thank you for our stay.

Stayed here for 2 nights in one of the Superior Double Rooms. Well appointed inside, lovely interior design features, comfy bed. The room was bay fronted, so room felt light and airy, with the bay being a nice place for the seated area. Good quality breakfast provided. Although we had a late arrival, host was welcoming and friendly when we arrived. Excellent place to stay.

Clean, tidy and new. Comfy bed, amenities included. We had a lovely stay and had the included breakfast. Rooms are small so if you’re staying be aware if you have big bags plus getting them up the steps! All over we would stay again.

Nice location in South Shields, close to the beach and parks on one end, the metro station on the other, and plenty of restaurants across the street. Well-appointed rooms, nicely decorated. Great breakfasts! Would recommend to anyone traveling here!

Went for afternoon tea on Mother’s Day & it was appalling. Had a booking and we were still sat waiting 25 minutes later. A table next to us sat down & received their afternoon tea within 5 minutes. I therefore asked the waitress why ours was taking so long, she cut me off mid sentence turned away saying ‘I’ll check’. She came back over to our table and advised the waitress had gave our order to another table and it was their fault but ours was being prepared now. The food eventually arrived & was nothing special. The holders for the food blocked our view of the others dining opposite & it wasn’t ideal. Had to ask for water twice, they brought a bottle instead of tap water obviously so we had to pay more. When I paid no apology was offered for the long wait. Overpriced for what we received. Won’t be returning.

I stayed at the Clifton for two nights recently as a single traveller. The room was comfortable but quite small. The en-suite was likewise small and using the toilet meant, for me, sitting at an angle! I like a hot shower! I could only manage to get the water from the shower to a reasonable temperature but it wasn't as hot as I would have liked. The same for shaving in the mornings. The breakfast was fine without being anything special. The sole sausage had to go back as it was impossible to cut. Its replacement was very nice. Certainly the food arrived very promptly. The staff, the little I had to do with them, were friendly and helpful. Five stars for them! I think that the hotel is pretty good value for the price. I would stay there again.

This hotel was booked by my company and what a little gem! My room on the ground floor was beautifully decorated with a really comfortable bed. Plenty of sockets and charge points which is a bonus these days. Nice sized shower cubicle and nice shower in the small en suite shower room. The cafe attached serves delicious meals with a varied choice of breakfasts for the hotel guests. Lovely friendly and helpful management and staff. South Shields has a lot to offer, right in the location of the Clifton.

Stayed here over the weekend hotel is in a good location with free parking on the street if you can find a space! Beautifuly decorated throughout. Breakfast was good also good choices! Only thing I didn't like was it was dog friendly normally a big no for me on morning of our leave someone came in with a dog at breakfast was sat at the table next to us and the dog kept barking staff did there best and move the owner into another room on there own but it really is annoying. I would definitely stay in hotel again tho if came back to South Shields and would definitely recommend it! We paid £159 for 2 nights over Bank Holiday 2 adults and child breakfast included really good value 👍

Lovely hotel, only trouble was we were on the top floor of the new part of the building, you have to come out of one part of the hotel to go in a different part for breakfast. Had a keypad for entry and a small round knob to open the door, not the best as kept catching my knuckles when turning. Only one bath towel and one hand towel, not ideal for 2 adults staying for 2 nights. Breakfast were lovely and plentiful, would liked to have seen fresh fruit and yoghurt on the menu, staff were attentive and friendly.

We often go for food at least once a week at the Clifton, mainly for a breakfast, service and food is good, have stopped having the coffee as it’s not nice so have opted for tea, which is a very small pot and a small cup, few mouthfuls and it’s gone 😏 I have noticed that when you ask for the bill your always asked card or cash, upon getting the bill and card machine brung to the table the bill is never given, which happens all the time, strange, why print a bill not to be given, we visited a few days ago and ordered, asked for extra butter which I always do to find we had been charged a extra 50p per portion 6g portion, (bill was given this time)as owner wasn’t there!!!! I find the reason the bills are never given is because stuff is always being added, I understand prices have gone up and am happy to pay but find the owner is very sneaky and holds on to the bill for this reason, also when my sister questioned them over it and we were told they pay 24p a portion of butter, a mean come on what business would pay that sort of money for portions of butter!! Just wanted to add the lad who serves us is always lovely, polite, friendly, always go’s above and beyond, never ever have a problem with the food or the serving staff.

The food was AMAZING! Room was spacious, spotless and comfortable. Staff professional and friendly. Lots of smiles from the team. Plenty of parking. Central for all attractions. Ideal for exploring the North East coast. Will be going back. X

Perfectly located in the heart of South Shields. Staff were fantastic and rooms were nice, clean and comfortable. Nice breakfast included. The only problem we had is that my wife has bad sinus issues and heavy fragrances can cause he sinus distress. Of the 60+ places we've stayed on our holiday, The Clifton was the most heavily scented throughout. If that's not an issue for you this is definitely the place to stay but if you have similar issues bare that in mind.

I gave this hotel 5 stars, as my husband and I had the most comfortable night stay. The room was decorated beautifully, shower cubicle large and the cleanliness of the room was tip top. Food also very good. Nothing was a bother to the staff, all very pleasant.

1st time staying here. I visit South Shields to visit friends and family fairly regularly and usually stay in the larger hotels. This was my 1st solo trip and decided to look for somewhere smaller and more central. I was there for 3 nights and The Clifton was perfect, a beautiful single room, spotless throughout and the most helpful pleasant staff. Breakfast is quality ingredients and plentiful. A short walk to the beautiful sea front and the town centre, surrounded by restaurants and the famous Colmans fish and chip shop/ cafe is directly opposite. When I make my next trip home I will definitely be staying here.

I've been a few times for breakfast now and it's always delicious. The staff are really welcoming and the place is nicely decorated. The only reason for a 4 star is that I really can't drink the coffee, not sure what it is but it always has a funny taste

My first visit to the Clifton. We booked a table for breakfast at 11am. The first thing to say is how struck I was by the quality of the decor. This place looks very modern and well presented. Service was fast and our breakfast was lovely. I certainly intend to go again.

What an absolute gem. A dog friendly guest house within a very short walk to the park and with plenty of choice of eateries and a really good night out. Our host was really friendly, the place itself beautifully decorated and our room had everything you would need for a short or long stay. The breakfast is something else. Will certainly visit again.

Stayed for 3 weeks because of a course I was on at a local college. Rooms and hotel decorated tastefully and the restaurant coffee shop is a nice place to sit also. The staff were all friendly and helpful and i was well looked after. The location is a stones throw from the sea front in one direction and the high street in the other.
