This museum has so much potential. It has AMAZING Roman artifacts and yet, there’s basically no information at the museum about what exactly you are seeing. There are little plaques that tell you what each item is but there’s no big picture on Roman life in Split. Further, the exhibit on Vis has no English information at all. This could be a five-star museum with just a bit more information for visitors.

I've visited over 20 museums all around in Central Europe in the span of 70 days and this has got to be the worst museum ever. For 40 Kunas, you get to visit 4-5 poorly curated rooms with fewer artefacts than the ones at the courtyard which is completely free to the public. But even then the sarcophaguses at the courtyard are poorly, or if not, labelled at all. Do also note that everything is in Croatian, which is understandable. I bought an English guidebook, titled Vis-a-vis 200, which is more of an archaeological book with some pieces from the museum rather than a guidebook. Overall, a huge disappointment.

@Jess Gibson is completely right. This museum has so much potential. Could be 5 stars if more effort was put into the information ie English. There are book guides of the area for 25kona but not of he museum itself. It's 40kn or about $6usd to enter. Really amazing artifacts. Very well displayed. Just not very much information. Great building too.

Very disappointing : closed in high season , begin august...Bureacrats on holiday themselves... Very bad. Nothwithstanding google maps stated museum to be open ! Staff was even lazy to maintain google maps ! Surely this museum deserves better, new management !

Good museum but right now only outside exhibits accessible, entire inside part of museum under rearrangement. Still worth visiting even just for the outside exhibits, a few nice mosaics, lots of roman stones and statues/ fragments.

I am sure we this is one of the best archeological museums I've seen. I am happy to be there even though the exhibition in the building is currently closed and only the garden is available (you get 50% discount for this reason). Beautiful mosaics, well preserved gravestones and columns. All beautifully arranged and well-lit. What is even more important, you can wander around the exhibits, smell and touch them. I definitely recommend to visit this museum. 🧡🌴🇭🇷

This amazing museum has a lot of artefacts from the beginning of millennia from the capital of ancient Illyria, a Roman province. I learn that Soluna (very close to Split) was a multicultural city, very advanced and rich. It is wonderful to roam its amazing space and learn bout the history.

Do NOT go to this museum. The entrance fee is definitely not worth 8€. If you do chose to visit this museum, you will only get to see tombstones with no context whatsoever. You will not learn anything about the city of Split. Inside the museum, you won't see any historical pieces – only reproductions and explanations (of very poor quality ; ChatGPT definitely wrote them) as to how they were reproduced. Save your money.

Super collection and outside area. Perfect to escape traffic and notice. When we were there, there was museum cat that came inside 😻 cheap student tickets 🎟

Huge collection of (mostly) Roman stellae and sarcophagi. Well described and even transliterated. Unfortunately main building is under renovation and exhibition is unavailable. They offer 50% discount for the tickets because of that (20 kuna for adults). Still worth the short walk, even to see a beautiful building and lapidarium.

Overpriced. The main attraction is outside of the museum, and you need to pass through it to get to the building where you pay for ticket. I was expecting to learn about the history, but it didn't happen as there is no interpretation outside. You can walk and take photos of Roman heritage. Inside was ancient glass exhibition from Zadar, but Zadar has entire museum dedicated to it. I expected some content from prehistoric period of Split but there was nothing. They made rude comments when someone mentioned student discount.

Museum was actually closed for renovations, however we were able to walk the portico and see the limestone carvings and mosaics.

Not worth the price (8€). Only the first floor was accessible with half the glasses being a reproduction and outside mainly stele and Tombstone. 5 stars looks like they are bought.

The indoor exhibition (glass) was interesting in principle but seemed to be rather half-baked — a lot of the content was photos from the Murano glass museum and some 3D prints. The outdoor area, which you also have to pay for, is in a state of utter neglect, with a lot of the artifacts laying around in random piles and poorly organised. The museum could be very interesting, but unfortunately they seem to not be spending enough money on it, and I can't recommend paying for the entrance.

Great stuff on display around the main museum-buliding. The inside was a bit lackluster and almost all of the signs are in Croatian (Google Lens can help you with that) Well worth a visit!

Short but sweet collection of Greek era artifacts from the island of Vista as well as some work from the Roman city of Salona. Ask for an English booklet with descriptions of the displays.

I expected a larger exhibition but the artefacts on display are worth seeing. Definitely a place any museum enthusiast should visit.

The interior of the museum doesn't have a whole lot to offer; the magic is in the scores of Roman artifacts scattered throughout the exterior walkways of the museum. There are some amazing sarcophagii as well as mosaics and other engraved relics, some with original coloration and wording easily legible. Pretty incredible display!

Not the best archeological museum experience. It had an excellent exhibition on Roman glass that was five stars in itself, however the main bulk of the exhibits are outside and mainly consists of artefacts from the necropolis at nearby Solina. This is mainly sarcophagi and inscriptions. There are some labels, but the bulk falls into the pile of broken stuff category. I’d give it one star for that. If you are really into Roman history and your Latin is up to scratch, then it’s great.

What fun time looking at different optical illusions and taking pictures to share. Puzzles and interactions will work for any age.

The experience was pretty meh and the showcase was pretty scarce while enjoyable, there are pretty exhibits, but in the end not worth the price

Pavel Wodecki We have visited this museum just yesterday. During my first visit of this place many years ago l saw many artifacts on display in the museum building. This time it was unpleasant surprise. Inside was just one room with copies o Roman glass which we checked in few minutes. Than front desk officer send us our with remark that exhibition is outside. But outside was a lapidarium only. So they sell lapidarium for the museum and leave the visitors to discover this "new reality" by themselves. After this l skipped visit of the local gallery to avoid another surprise.

The permanent exibition is closed for the summer and the staff give absolutely no information about this. They don't have any knowledge on the remaining objects on display in the garden. Don't come here during summer 2023 unless you have a special interest in the stone and lead sacophaguses from Salone that you can actually still see.

The museum was very nice, it consisted of many stone carved pieces, very big mosaics which included information about where they are from and what time period they were created in. The inside had some of the first glass creations in the world, some were imitations to better demonstrate its looks but most of it was real, all the exhibits included very detailed information about how they were created and how they got the specific color of the objects.

Almost nothing to look at inside, what little there was was neglected. Only points of interest are outside.

The museum advertises itself as the oldest in Croatia, with exhibits from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, it turned out to be extremely small, the most interesting being the things from the nearby ancient Roman city displayed under the sheds outside. The guy at the ticket office was sleeping like a corpse and we couldn't buy tickets, we couldn't even wake him up...

Just feels like they got as many artifacts as they could and stuffed them into a large room and a garden. Not much unique stuff on display and there isnt any proper flow to the museum meaning you can see most of it in 20 minutes. Kind of feel like it needs more than stone and pottery.

We loved the museum. I read the reviews before going saying that it is a small place with few exhibits, and i couldn't disagree more. sadly, because of this, we timed the visit poorly and we had to hurry. It is rather small but PACKED with exhibits and if you use an app to translate texts and photos, it's all very nicely done. I wish to visit the place again soon.

Short walk from palace area, exhibits well displayed and everything is described in Croatian and English. Worth the visit. Not sure how previous posters missed all the descriptions. Also, it is close enough to the palace that it doesn’t need to be inside the walls.
