We were so stunned walking through this Roman palace in Split! It is actually the world's most complete remains of a Roman palace. On first sight you may not recognize it as a palace as it looks rather like a city wall. This is because in post Roman times the people of split built their city inside the palace. So you will need some imagination when visiting. Best is to start your way in the cellar, entering from the harbor side. Then walk your way up to the historic Peristyle. Also three of the original four gates are preserved. Our biggest highlight was the temple of Aesculapius. Five stars is not enough for this site and even our kids could not get enough of it!

It's an old fortress in old town of split. You can roam around the fortress. Mostly it's closed so you can see ruins from outside but still it's beautiful. Many GOT scenes are shot here this whole place has cafes and bar, ice cream shops and shopping outlets. it’s beautiful place

Excellent to visit. You can walk through the old Roman streets which are nearly unchanged since when they were built. There are statues of sphinx, sarcophagus and other curiosities scattered through the palace. The evening I went there was even an open air mass that took place which was magical to experience given the acoustics. Plenty of tours cover this, but I found it fine to go alone and just look up the history on my phone for each area. All of this is a UNESCO heritage site, and it's free!! Honestly one of the best things to do to get a feel for the city and some of its history. Recommended 100%.

The palace and grounds are an amazing opportunity to step into the past. A guided tour would take you 2 hours approx but give you a history of the development of the palace and it's many uses. Also, at midday every day there is a small 'welcome' from the acted ruler and soldiers at the door to the palace.

Great place to jump back in time to Roman era Split. Well preserved structure however it is a very busy spot. Diocletian’s palace covers a wide area and you will find ruins on multiple levels. You will find most of the columns in great state of conservation as well as the original steps and architraves. There is also an Egyptian sphinx on the side of the main nave. It was great that you could also access the underground gallery leading back to the Split promenade and port.

Only the Romans could have built something 1500+ years ago and we’d still be talking about it. What was once a retirement palace is now half a town. Enjoy it. It’s what makes Split worth the visit. Don’t bother with tickets and rushing. Just walk around and take in the Roman remains and medieval Venetian architecture.

Great place to see. A lot of activities here. Shops, food, drinks, etc. Please make sure you allow yourself enough time at this ancient historical site. There is so much to see. You need at least 2 solid days to explore all the nooks and crannies, streets and alleyways. Only parts of the original palace remain but are still a significant chunk of the site. It's interesting to see how the newer portions intermingle with the original. If you are into ancient history and enjoy the grandure of construction from that time, this is the place for you. Well... given the multitude of other activities, it's a great place for everyone. Oh, and don't forget to check out the Riva and enjoy the view of the Adriatic sea.

A beautiful location of living history. Contemporary business and active household intermingling and adapting to the Roman history that it all resides in. An audio walking tour of the area is highly recommended, but don't hesitate to stray a few blocks outside the palace on any given side. There are wonderful restaurants and shops near the palace in addition to those inside.

A fascinating area of Split. Which draws in a lot of tourists. We found it best visited early morning as the foot traffic was less. This allows you to capture the beauty in a more relaxed environment. The streets are beautiful, and some of the alleys are tiny. Just walk round and take it all in. Tickets are needed for attractions such as Bell Tower and Cathedral but elsewhere free. Keep your eyes peeled for faces and artwork on the walls above eye level. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the area, and it's buzzing with life. Which is also great.

Diocletian's Palace in Split is truly a gem, seamlessly weaving history and aesthetics. The palace's architectural beauty serves as a testament to its rich past, providing visitors with a captivating journey through time. Exploring the shops within the palace reveals a mix of treasures, although some may find them a tad pricey. However, the elevated quality of the items, including a remarkable but relatively expensive ice cream priced at 2.50, justifies the expense. It seems that the taste surpasses the cost, making it a worthwhile indulgence for those with a penchant for exceptional treats. For an optimal experience, I recommend scheduling your visit in the evening. This timing not only allows for a more intimate exploration of the palace's historical significance but also helps avoid the bustling crowds that tend to gather in the middle of the day. A highlight not to be missed is the bell tower. Ascending its heights provides not only a panoramic view of the surroundings but also a unique perspective on the palace itself. It adds an extra layer of charm to the visit, making the exploration of Diocletian's Palace in Split a truly enriching and memorable experience.

It's a beautiful spot where you can feel the Roman atmosphere. If you like the history, here's the spot for you. But if you don't know the history so much, it's better to learn something before you visit. You can sit down around the historical buildings and enjoy it.

Wonderful. A living roman palace. This is the feeling that you have for visiting this amazing place. The architecture is a dream. I love that I can see standing up roman columns (restored). You get the feeling how it could have been the place 2000 years ago.

Best view of the palace opens from the stairs of bell tower. Narrow streets makes all the cities look the same from above. Worth to as indigenous historical and cultural place. PS. Parking feels like lottery.

If you are visiting Croatia but do not plan to stop in Split to see the Castle, you have your priorities wrong. This is a must see as it will create many wonderful memories for years to come. If you can stay in the castle, although it might not be the most comfy, it will also be a neat experience.

Really stunning ancient walls, well preserved and a calm place for walks in the evening. Lovely restaurants and shops around the area. Whilst it is one of Splits most popular tourist attractions there really isn't much to see compared to landmarks in bigger European cities

We stayed three at the Diocletian Palace Experience for three nights and had the chance to use some of their special offers, such as the peka and the wine sampling. We were very happy with the staff and selection of wines. The room we stayed in was beautiful and well appointed. Therefore, full marks for this hotel!

Amazing place, beautiful, kept in good condition. It's best to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds of visitors. The atmosphere there is absolutely gorgeous and makes you want to come back there again. From the Palace, you can enter a maze of charming little lanes spreading out all over the old town. This place is a must see!

Absolutely spectacular view from the top of the bell tower. It gets very busy in the square so would recommend doing this fairly early in the morning to avoid massive crowds (there are still lots of people just not as many!!) you don’t have to walk right to the top if you don’t want to but would highly recommend!!

Diocletian Palace is an absolutely spectacular destination, one of the best I've ever visited. For history enthusiasts, it's a must-see. The 4th-century Roman imperial residence showcases remarkable architecture and attention to detail. Exploring the labyrinthine streets feels like a captivating journey through time. What's impressive is the seamless integration of modern life within the ancient walls, creating a vibrant atmosphere. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Diocletian Palace holds immense cultural significance. From underground passages to the bell tower's panoramic views, every moment is unforgettable. Prepare to be transported to a bygone era and captivated at every turn.

Visited here whilst travelling through Croatia. Couldn't pronounce the name if I tried. Beautiful old city, similar to Trogir, Dubrovnik old town. Beautiful architecture, stunning alleyways, and cellars. Tickets are applicable for various areas. Loved the cellars and the Tower. Multiple restaurants and bars / takeaways. Parking nearby - traffic can be heavy as close to the harbour and ferries. Interesting visit. Recommended

The place looks amazing. Except for the fact that is usually very crowded, this place is definitely worth visiting. The bell tower is one of the things that are worth visiting if you are a tourist. The view and architecture of this tower are one of the best aspects of Split.

I really like the old town cores. This one is really amazing, especially this year whem there were not so much people there and you do not have to fight your way through the streets. The overall impression is somewhat diminished by the large number of restaurants and stores on every corner, but worth seeing.

The silver and iron gates, the St. Domnius Cathedral are all just a stone's throw from the port. You have to see it. (Original) Wir waren im Oktober 2019 hier. Split hat eine wunderschöne Altstadt. Loved it's insane history since it's construction. Had an amazing tour guide, Maya that explained it's story in a concise way. It's a lesson of life, built with one purpose, quickly losing it's meaning and then being adapted/ocuppied for centuries and giving birth to a full medieval city, later the city we see today. Fully recommend it's visit. Let's see how the history of the city evolves and the Palace itself.

Historical Roman place in Split, Croatia. It is an ancient palace, built for the Roman emperor Diocletian in the fourth century AD. If you are visiting Split, you should visit it. For the real experience, go for the organized tour with the tour guide. Otherwise, you will most probably miss the sphinx. 😉

What a beautiful place to visit. I could wander around the old town in Split for days and still come across places if not seen before. So much history and well preserved whilst still being lined in to the current day.

A very interesting and historic set of buildings. A real mish mash of different periods and architecture... Egyptian, Roman, middle ages. Highly recommend paying to visit the substructures, hugely impressive underground rooms and tunnels. The whole place is not really a fun place for small children, but adults with time and an interest in history will really enjoy it.

The remains of a huge Roman palace intertwined with medieval buildings and more modern ones. You cannot miss visiting it if you come to Split. Some parts are very well preserved and restored. Others are old and crumbling. Very crowded in the evening. It is difficult to walk through the narrow streets, but worth the trouble nevertheless for the special atmosphere.

Very beautiful place, even though we didn't buy tickets and only saw everything for the outside - not necessary to visit the museum, you'll enjoy the place anyway. Beware of many people and very hot weather during the summer.

Wonderful to see the amazing roman dry stone walling lasting centuries and for GoT fans the dragon room. Very crowded in the market above but areas of shade. Lovely places to eat. It was opposite our cruise liner stop, but glad to do it with a guide.

A place where there are a lot of tourists in the summer. August is hot, but you can always find a shady street. There are a lot of places to eat. You can't write on the streets, there is a fine of 300 euros for this. If it doesn't bother you, you'll like it there.

Stunning Roman remains right in the heart of Splits. Most of the palace can be visited for free and there are great views of the harbour when you get to the second level. I also highly recommend checking out the crypt for some more touring but I would stay away for the shops as they're overly expensive and clearly tourist traps.

The palace and surrounding bell tower was a very interesting walk. The views were worth the climb and to capture all of Split. The palace was beautiful and historic with many points of interest. In the palace square there is a cafe and also live music and emperor performance at certain times of day. Also plenty of shopping below in the indoor market

The old city of Split is one of the most wonderful historical cities in the Europe. The labirynth of streets, hidden shortcuts and historical spirit give you a feeling that you are walking in ancient Rome empire. I recommend to walk across streets during day and also to see this beautiful city by night. It's also worth to buy ticket to visit city's attractions - everything in reasonable prices, but experience exceeds expectations.

With all the restored and still standing ruins, the experience makes it magical. The architecture of all the remaining structures from the Baroque period back to the Middle Ages can be seen despite the bombing that occurred during WW2. it was truly a site worth visiting

We took a walk through this very impressive historical site whilst on a visit to Split. It's beautiful and awe inspiring to stand there and take it all in. Split us a very pretty city to just explore and wander around.

Really nice old town esque part of the city. Highly recommend not eating until you arrive, and then explore to find some hidden restaurant treasures tucked away within the city walls

This was such an amazing place to visit and explore. We learned so much history. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Split was an amazing place to visit. We learned about the palace being decorated with numerous 3500 year old granite sphinxes, and now there are only three remaining left. It was supposed to be the retirement home for Diocletian. It was also one of the filming locations for Game of Throne's so that was cool to see as well.

The palace is not typical like other Roman sites as there are shops and museums in the palace grounds with crowds packing all the main areas even during October time. It is quite impressive and in a prominent sea facing location. You can easily wander around the palace to see the history, architecture shop and get some food to eat. I would recommend the underground tour to see the massive structure below the streets and admire the construction feat. And don't forget to visit the cafes, restaurants and shops in the palace grounds
