I rode my bicycle across the state of Missouri last week from KC to St Louis with a detour through Grafton and Alton because for fun I wanted to ride the ferry across the Mississippi. I found this restaurant on Google and it looked interesting. I asked the young lady taking orders if there was anything on the regular menu as good as the special they were offering. She conferred with another young lady and they both agreed the special was awesome and even described how the sweetness of the peach combined with the salty flavor from the grilled hamburger was amazing. I thought this was a pretty good description so I ordered one. They both asked me to come back up and let them know how I liked it afterwards. I was impressed by how enthusiastic, friendly and sincere they were, it seems like most teenage girls don’t want to be be bothered talking with strange adults. That burger was absolutely delicious. It does sound like an odd combination for a hamburger, but everything was done right, down to the last ingredient and the toasting of the bun which always makes a burger better. I chose the chips for my side…I wanted salt since I was on a long bike ride in the heat, and was pleasantly surprised they were homemade and served in a miniature brown paper bag. They were very good. I suspect that this place does everything good because my experience was outstanding. I regret that I won’t have more opportunities to visit since I live in Kansas City. Thanks for an excellent meal and experience!

This is easily our favorite restaurant in Alton, and the whole St. Louis area. I try something new (almost) every single time we go, and I have yet to find something I don’t love! Today I got the Garden Variety sandwich with a side of pasta salad and both were phenomenal. Everything is so fresh and clearly made from scratch. The dressing and hummus they put on the Garden Variety is addictive. I didn’t get it today, but the Broccoli Cheddar soup is the best you can find. The patio is so quaint and relaxing. I honestly can’t say enough great things about this place. You can really tell that the owners take great pride in their food and atmosphere.

The soups and sandwiches here are fantastic!! You will have a hard time deciding what to get because the whole menu sounds amazing. You really can’t go wrong with any of the sandwiches. The Naan Flatbreads are absolutely incredible! The appetizers also look good but the sandwiches are so big that I never have room to eat any more. The staff is friendly and gets the food out as fast as they can. They get a lot of online orders so it might take a bit to get your food if you just go in and order but it’s worth the wait. They have plenty of outdoor seating and the place is really nicely decorated for the seasons.

What a great spot! Plan to stay for a bit they are so busy but the wait is WORTH IT! They are very attentive to my food allergies and verified TWICE my needs. Made changes to an order at no charge and came out front to check on us. VERY VERY NICE service. We enjoyed the food and service so much. Coming back on our next trip here!

I highly recommend this place to everyone. There is nothing at all bad about the food here. If you have a big appetite, I suggest ordering their gigantic sandwich, called the Wadlow. This sandwich is jam packed with all the right ingredients and is very healthy although it has at least four different meats, as it is piled high with different vegetables, avocado included. I love this sandwich all around. The bread was soft and fresh, and everything tasted great, as well as the small salad I ordered on the side. The sandwich is so huge, I could barely get my mouth around it to bite into it, but it is well worth the effort and can serve two people. After eating the whole sandwich for lunch, I did not have to eat anything else for the rest of the day. The meats are of high quality, served in very generous portions and were bursting with flavor. This restaurant is five stars hands down! We will definitely be back to make the trip across the river when we are in St. Louis again visiting from Colorado.

Really cute spot and the Granny's grilled cheese w tomato soup was incredible. So tasty and interesting. Also tried the cheesy jalapeno bread and that was a lot better than we were expecting. Everyone was so accommodating and got our orders in even though we arrived right before closing. Next time I'm in town I'm definitely getting another meal or two there.

This is a happening place. The wait was a little longer than I like but I was not in a hurry. They also make this stuff fresh. Love the stuff Sicilian sandwich. I also got to split it with my husband.

Food was alright, open faced sandwiches aren’t really my thing wish they had that stated in the description of it. The service was good they were ready to take my order as soon as I walked up to the register and they brought us our food. Great location, Okay prices. Will probably come again.

We went here for lunch. I had the Granny Grilled Cheese. It was delicious and one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. The flavors were so good. The rest of my group enjoyed their food as well. The only issue was seating. When the weather is nice there is quite a bit more seating outside. I will definitely go again when we are in Alton. There is a Chilli Mac I would love to try.

Went here with a coworker the other day. This was my first time ever coming here. Sandwich was amazing and staff was very friendly. I really enjoyed the outside dining on a beautiful day as well. Will definitely be back to try some other goodies.

Food is always made perfect. It's so delicious. The people that work here always do a great job. We eat here a couple times a week and never had any issues. I definitely recommend eating at brown bag bistro. Try the granny grilled cheese and the cheese cakes.

Wow… maybe their cheeseburger is the best I’ve eaten in a long time because they only serve it on the The Weekend. I have confirmed the burger is not named after the rap star, but the literal translation to gluttony. They only serve two days because they want you to eat at other restaurants. The burger, actually looks like a picture. Everything about it made it special, the provolone is a nice choice because it’s a blind tasting cheese, so the meat and toppings come through so much more vivid. This is definitely a paranormal pitstop for the boys of the haunted garage podcast. The place is clean and smells amazing. Real good, real people, not to mention a signature chili recipe with a hint of sweetness! Definitely Check it out!

This place is always good. I don't like the tip first idea, but it's self service after you pay so you may want to tip yourself. The sandwiches are 100% awesome I've never had a bad one. The ultimate ham and cheese is fantastic. I wish they had a little more indoor seating.

Plenty of inside and outside seating. Menu is posted on a board by where you order. You are given a number to place on your table, staff will bring food to your table. Chicken salad was plentiful with grapes and celery served on a croissant. Sandwich came with a bag of chips or you can upgrade to pasta salad. Don't forget a delicious dessert or and to go into the 1904 General Store next door for some ice cream or fudge.

Great sandwich shop in lower Alton. They were pretty busy when we went and still got our food around ~20 minutes. Very good sandwich with pasta salad. The patio outside is mainly covered by table umbrellas but can get a little hot if you don't have one. A fun local shop you must try if you're in the area. The picture is of the 'Rugrat' sandwich and pasta salad.

Delicious food, I enjoyed the New Yorker. The wife had Ham and Cheese, coleslaw slaw was perfect, my only complaint was price it cost for lunch what I would generally pay for dinner. You are paying $13+ for a sandwich. Price is subjective. it's all about if it is worth it to you to pay for good food

I really loved this place. I had the Peachy Patty (think cheeseburger with onions and peaches). It was absolutely heavenly! Best burger I've ever had. Everyone else liked their food and we enjoyed eating in the store right next to it. DELICIOUS! I would definitely go again.....and again!

This is nice place to grab a sandwich, salad, or soup. Love the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. We sat in their upstairs over-flow in the gift shop next door. They also had outside seating that must be great in the spring. We had the rugrat and ham and cheese sandwichs. Both were winners.

We had catering for 40 people for a corporate event. They showed up on time and the food was awesome. Great sandwiches, sides, and homemade desserts! I can’t rate the atmosphere. But the variety of sandwiches they provided had something for everyone. ZERO complaints. Plenty of food and the leftovers disappeared with the crowd. I especially liked the homemade salt& pepper potato chips. I would make the 1 hour drive for carry out.

The food is pretty good! But be prepared to wait awhile - a long while. Haven't had a bad sandwich yet. Love the soups, too. But I can't understand why it is so long of a wait for a sandwich, be it take-out or dine-in. They have a few seats inside (key word FEW) and a nice patio - I suggest take out during the hot months...we waited 40+ minutes out in the heat for 2 sandwiches today. That's bordering outrageous (so if you have small children keep the wait time in mind). I'd give 3 stars for timing alone, but staff is nice, and food is awesome. It's pretty much serve yourself, so, maybe tip after service is complete.
