Good Museum for entertainment and knowledge purpose. In 5 building knowledge is vast. Kids likes most. Stone art is more . Small park for kid . Augmented reality video.. From Egmore Railway Station only 1.4 km distance. Only walkable distance. If you are going by auto they will ask 100 rupees. Inside book stall and public library also available

Worth visit at Chennai. Its basically archeological and exhibits mostly relate to that. Sadly many of the halls were closed, may be due to the pandemic. One or two halls / rooms are very dimly lit and the exhibits were poorly visible. No area about plants or animals could be seen. The Children's museum is very poorly maintained, especially the Science park. Overall maintenance is mediocre. Anyways, good for a day's trip to know about history and view the artifacts.

The museum is a beautiful building and needs more maintenance. The natural history museum is the main attraction and will take the longest time. It'll easily take 3 hours of walk so wear comfortable shoes and carry water with you. If it's sunny day also carry something to cover your head as you may walk between buildings. The ticket covers 6 building but today only 4 were operating. There is ample parking available inside.its an ideal place for those with a curiosity mind and want to learn a bit of history, biology, science. The building itself is slowly crumbling and needs lot of care, painting etc. There is no structure inside to have food or water, though there are shops across the street.

It’s a nice place to visit and feel lost in the Master pieces of art in Bronze, different kind of stones & work done in different century’s . Must visit Bronze and stone art gallery . There is also a nice library in and students come there to hang around, discuss amongst them on various topics and learn. There is also a nice park to sit enjoy the nature. There is also a canteen to enjoy local tea ☕️ & coffee. If you have time while visiting Chennai don’t miss the place.

Definitely, would rate as one of the most comprehensive and highly rated list of collections. Pros Entry ticket is priced nominally as any government museum. Collection and subjects are huge and exhaustive. One would neatly need more than a day to go through the objects. Super collection of local flora and fauna, especially the aqua life Cons Staff is literally none with no support. One may find quite a few of the objects are ill maintained, at any point some quarter or the other is either under renovation or closed. Tip - carry a water bottle and start your day early, you may sometimes get delayed at the entry counter and strongly advise to carry exact change at the ticketing counter

Such is the charm of Government Museum in Chennai (Madras Museum) that from over decades it has been one of the top attractions in Tamil Nadu for all ages of people. Established during the British Epoch in 1851, the museum is an ideal place for the people who are inclined towards history and art and are in a search for any historical site where they can blindly take their Tamil Nadu holidays. Being the 19th-century repository, the Government Museum is reckoned amongst the oldest museums in India and is known for holding a wide variety of arts and artefacts relating to human history and culture. The Indo-Saracenic tree-studded infrastructure of this museum has six buildings and 46 galleries which exhibits numerous artefacts. Amongst which, there is an archaeological section which consists two galleries - Bronze and Hindu Bronze. Artefacts related to Vijayanagar, Chalukya, Hoysala, and Chola periods along with bronze effigies of Hindu deities are out on display in these galleries. As you further explore the repository, the resplendent art of Raja Ravi Verma with an in-house theatre, where you can enjoy the performances, awaits to astound you. Not just for adults, the place is also a treasury for kids as it houses the Children’s Museum, which has many galleries relating to dolls, technology, transportation, and science to keep them engaged. Next in the museum is Zoological section exhibiting galleries of - invertebrates, reptiles, foreign animals, mammals, birds, and corals. Last but not the least, there is Numismatic - must-visit section in the museum for the coin lovers. Here, you get to savour the sights of some impeccable replicas of rare coins. Therefore, whenever you plan for a vacation in Tamil Nadu, just keep in mind to spare a day for this nonpareil place for an indelible holiday experience. TIMINGS Saturday to Thursday (Friday remains Closed): 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS Arts Artefacts Sculptures Paintings Rare Coins Replicas Zoology Archaeology Numismatic

Audio tour available through app which is very innovative.only disadvantage is toilets, which are smelling bad and no locks on doors.

Museum is in large area and can take half of the day if gone through each area leisurely although when I went some part of the museum was closed for renovation so couldn't got chance to explore. Ticket price is 15/- per person. Parking place is not having any fine which is one of the good point. It's a must visit place once you are in chennai especially for kids as they will get so much information about southern dynasty and their history. There are archeological artifact's and sculpture of different southern ruler period. Well adults also find it intresting as place and associated videos Convey detail about respective area. Geological section is quite a intresting place and one can see different species of animals and birds in it. Astonishing fact about this museum is most of the animals and birds displayed here are real one those are preserved and placed. As I have confirmed this with one of the staff and even once you visit can feel same while observing these animals and birds. Elephant and whale huge skeleton bones amaze us as how small we are in size. Upstairs there is sea creature section with all wide varieties of aquatic animals and corals details. Also don't miss to see robotic dinosaur which they play time to time might be hourly for 5 mins which was really good. Also one thing which I noticed in this place is they have automatic chairs for physically challenged and elder people to avoid stairs which is something unique thing I have seen in museum. Outside garden is also get used for exhibition so one can go there if interested.

For New Year 2024, I explored the Government Museum in Chennai. The location was pleasant and aesthetically pleasing, with 80% of the exhibits well-arranged and captivating. However, the remaining sections were undergoing renovation. The highlight was the impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits. Unfortunately, the experience was marred by inadequate toilet facilities, drinking water provisions, and insufficient signages. Basic amenities were lacking. Moreover, the museum complex closed after 8 pm, yet the on-site toilets shut down promptly at 5 pm, reflecting a poor service for essential facilities.

It is so exciting and informative. I must say it is really worth visiting the place. Indian adult can get in the museum with Rs. 15 ticket and the foreigners have to pay Rs. 250. Its really worth visiting for it has rare collections of early century stone works of deities from the south India. Not just that, you will get so much by spending just rupees 15. some galleries were closed for renovation but still it took 2 hours for me to make a fast visit. they have kept the place neat and clean and its really a good experience to make a visit. They dont allow camera or phone to click pics inside. I must say the virtual tour screens/ interactive screens will help in a great way to know more about the things presented there. moreover through QR code scanning you can have audio guide. I recommend this place for all those who are interested in the early history of the south India and also for those who love to have information about other facts too.

It has library and many people are visiting such a good place. It opens at 9:30am and closes at 5:00pm.The Museum Houses An Art Gallery, A Museum Theatre, Connemara Public Library and Department Of Natural History. It is an Amalgam Of Various Sections Like The Ones Devoted To Geology, Anthropology, Numismatics, Botany, Zoology, Archeology And Sculpture. It's the largest of the museums I've ever been to. Despite being so wide, the museum is very net and tidy. You need atleast one fulll day to take a complete view of the museum. The place is also very quite and serene despite being in the hearts of the city. I really liked the place.

This is an integrated government building complex that houses several key must-visit places in Chennai. First, of course, is the museum building that houses several key historical materials and statues. Some of the material goes back to centuries, anyone interested in history and archaeology would find it highly resourceful. Then there is a building that has a children's museum that would help kids to know a lot of things about India and the world. Everything is reasonably well maintained around the complex, and the government department deserves a lot of appreciation! Due to time constraints, we couldn't visit everything but it was generally worth a visit. There is a multi-story library that has huge halls for students to study, then reference, periodical, language, literature, and other sections. When we visited it wasn't crowded at all, yet I feel people should come with families, and especially with kids to learn a lot. I would submit, the government is doing a big well here with taxpayers' money in funding, expanding and looking after these institutions, and people should take advantage of it. The Museum is located In the middle of the city, easily accessible from the main road. It closes at 5 pm strictly. There is ample parking for cars. The entry fee is Rs 40 per adult for all building visits.

Very much worth visiting. 250Rs for foreigners, 15Rs for Indians. The beautiful exterior is undergoing some restoration. The interior is like stepping back in time to a museum of a bygone age. No doubt it will eventually be rescued from decay. But in the meantime it has a huge charm of its own. An eclectic collection of everything from superb Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculpture to threadbare stuffed animals. It isn't what you would expect from a modern museum but come anyway!

Huge museum, covering all areas like archeology, biology, nature, art gallery and sculptures. You can see beautiful old buildings with a library and a contemporary building. There's one children's museum with lots of interesting information with a activity park for kids. Also has a library. And the theatre has interesting architecture and conducts shows too.

It's a wonderful place to visit in Chennai. Great for children, students, researchers and even for working professionals. It may take a whole day to explore everything in detail. It's spread across a wide area at Egmore. There's lot of parking space for both 4 wheelers and 2 wheelers, though it's not marked properly. Many things needs lots of maintenance inside. Moving model of dinosaur is a great thing to experience. It will be operated/turned on when there's sufficient spectators inside the hall. Main thing to not if you are visiting from far is that FRIDAY is HOLIDAY.

Visited here solo to take in more of Indian and Tamil life. The museum is made up of a number of buildings each with their own unique galleries. The cost for foreigners is 250 (Indians is just 15). I understand a "tourist tax" but the multiple is huge! The good first - bronze exhibits, stone sculptures and contemporary arts were gorgeous. Whilst pretty much everything else was terrible. The natural history exhibits were very old and not really well looked after, whilst the children's museum is pretty laughable (see picture of Indian costumes) It is a good way to spend some time in Chennai, I was just expecting more. One of the best museums in India. It is located in Banglore near Chinnaswamy stadium. There are many machines and engines used in the past and kept in the museum for viewing purpose. One can gain abundant knowledge from this museum. One day is not enough for covering the entire museum and each and every thing in the museum can explain lot of science behind it. There's a thing which explains hyperbola and it's amazing. One must this place when they visit Banglore.

Spread across an area of 16.25 acres of land, the Government Museum is also counted among the largest museums of South Asia. Its campus has six independent buildings with 46 galleries. These are: Main building, where you will find artifacts and sculptures from the past, animal galleries, botany galleries and philately gallery. Best place for exploring Indian history starting from stone age to present day. This is a museum that is huge and can take up to 2hrs to roam around all galleries, artifact's or sections. This place contains abundance of information, if you like facts and wanted to know history - this is best place for visit. One visit is enough and can get easily bored if you are not good in exploring historical artifact's and statues. Children Museum is best for kids for exploring science and getting interested in studies.

Government museum or Chennai museum a worth visiting place was established on 1851. You need atleast 2 days to cover entire 6 Halls. They have a proper parking, clean washroom and good resting place where you can have your own meals. Main attractions are around Halls 1,2 and 3. Did not get time to cover other sections. Will visit again for sure. One star less because it needs some maintenance, not that good shape.

This is my first time to the museum. Actually for a workshop I visited this museum today. From Royapettah where the workshop was conducted, 20mts away was the museum. Being a Sunday the roads were devoid of traffic so I reached early. Parking our car, at the entrance is the ticket counter. You need to buy them along with photography ticket. Since the visit was a part of our workshop only two galleries we visited. One is Bronze gallery other is Rock gallery. Bronze gallery is yards away from the entrance. An air conditioner room welcomed us. Two floors full of bronze statues were laid. The room is fully lit with dark ambience around. Though clicking pics are tough because of the black surrounding, the place is neat and well maintained. From ground floor you climb stairs to enter first floor. It’s full of statues kingdoms order. I saw more of Hoysala and Vijayanagara. You need two hours to spend time in this place. From here you move to Rock gallery also known as Stone gallery. It’s more of chozha, Vijayanagara period rocks. Many are damaged and unidentified too. Still it’s a sight to watch the statues and know about the kingdoms too. Two full hours are much needed to spend in this gallery. As you come out don’t miss seeing the Naga tree which is a unique tree of this place. A lovely must visit spot of chennai filled with lot of heritage and culture.

A Treasure Trove Awaiting Proper Polish: A Review of the Government Museum Chennai The Government Museum Chennai, also known as the Madras Museum, is a true gem nestled in the heart of the city. Established in 1851, it's the second oldest museum in India, boasting a vast and captivating collection of artifacts spanning history, art, and natural history from across the Indian subcontinent. As you step into the grand halls, you're immediately transported through time. Ancient sculptures, intricate bronzes, and tell the stories of bygone eras, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of India. The museum's archaeological section is a treasure trove, housing everything from prehistoric tools from Amaravati. The numismatic collection is equally impressive, showcasing coins and from various Indian dynasties. But the museum's appeal extends beyond just history. The art galleries display a diverse range of traditional and modern paintings. The natural history section houses fascinating exhibits on the flora and fauna of the region, perfect for sparking curiosity in young minds. However, amidst the magnificence, it's impossible to ignore the signs of neglect. The grand old building, is in dire need of restoration. Some exhibits showcase damage, which is a heartening sight. Despite these shortcomings, the sheer depth and breadth of the Government Museum Chennai's collection is undeniable. With proper management and restoration, this museum has the potential to rival any major museum in the world.

It is a very large museum in multiple buildings displaying a massive amount of items ranging from biological, historical to anthropology items. Great for school field trips for children. I enjoyed displays of musical instruments and items of different tribes in Tamil Nadu. It may be a good idea to break up this massive place into several museums of different themes. Due to its size, I was exhausted and completed only 2 buildings out of 5 in my visit. Admission fee is 250 rupees for foreign visitors.

It involves a variety of topics and various collectibles pertaining to various centuries. The architecture of few buildings will just blow us away and also gives a chance for great photo opportunities

What a great location in the heart of the city with ample parking space. Loaded with information. Except the contemporary art galleries ground floor, all other buildings need lot of maintenance. Kids area especially to mention. Most of the lights are not working. Every were dust and sober looking. Officials should look into it seriously. Even the ticket charges are very low. Increasing the entry fees will bring revenue. Variety of medicinal plants could be planted. Increase the excitement of the visitors. Enhance the look and feel to attract more visitors please.

Best place to visit when you are at Chennai. Very pleasant during the evening's. We haven't visited the Museum, instead we went for Artisan bazaar. The museum closes around 5pm. The environment is good and the climate feels pleasant with more trees. The Artisan bazaar ends by Aug 6th try once.. if you can. Visit Museum plus bazaar which is happening currently. One good place to visit.

With its intriguing voyage through India's diverse cultural fabric, the museum provides a special fusion of art and history. All visitors will have a more enriching experience because of the interesting and instructive exhibitions. In particular, my 10-year-old daughter loved the vivid exhibitions and interactive displays that brought history to life. Visitors can experience India's diverse legacy through the museum's meticulous curation, which cultivates an awareness for our cultural origins. The good environment was further enhanced by the staff's eagerness to share thoughts and their excitement. The museum is a great family destination because of its clear commitment to education. The overall tourist experience is improved by the immaculate grounds and the unambiguous signs. I value the Chennai National Museum's initiatives to help young people understand and love history. It's more than just a museum; it's a historical voyage that deepens visitors' appreciation and comprehension of India's rich past. We anticipate additional explorations and visits to this cultural treasure in the future.

A place all chennaites have to visit, lots of history to learn about. Reasonably well maintained. But the staff are bit rude particularly if you have a camera in hand, be prepared to be checked if you bought the separate ticket for camera by 20 different staff before you finish.

A beautiful place worthy of multiple visits. The museum has to offer history, arts, science themed houses and a beautiful garden to enjoy some peace away from all the rush and crowds. Their audio tour app was really good at explaining the displays especially at the bronze museum.

It is a very big museum in multistored buildings and halls showing a large number of items such as biological, historical to anthropology items. This museum is place Great for school students trips for children. I liked displays of musical instruments and items of different local tribes in Tamil Nadu. It may be a good idea to break up this massive place into several museums of different themes. Due to its size, I was exhausted and completed only 2 buildings out of 5 in my visit. Next time I am planning to complete the remaining part. Admission fee is 250 rupees for foreign visitors. Must see place. Come with children and spend time. It will definitely help your children in understanding various things like Indian culture, Engineering, animals and many other things. It will take one day to visit all things. So plan and visit. You will remember for ever.

For a history buff, the place would be very interesting. Even if you are not into it, seeing centuries old sculptures/replicas and the history behind them is awe-inspiring. It also has an art gallery with a few good works and reptile, bird museum for kids. The arms and weapons gallery is also really good. Public library also has a large variety of books in different genres and subjects.

There are about 6 different locations in the museum varying from zoology specimens , statues made of rock and stones , coins , contemporary painting and all sorts. This is a complex that was built by the English during their colonial times and now converted to a museum. There are several buildings displaying various items but the buildings themselves are nice. What is even better are the spaces between the buildings which are so serene and peaceful with seats to sit down and relax to catch your breath before you venture into the next building. These are also picnic spots where people have their food packed from home/restaurant thus spreading a mouth watering aroma. The bronze statues, coins and medals are, in my opinion, the best of the lot. Exceptional art work of yesteryear. The expression on the faces of the different statues and the way the details on the legs and hands have been done is fantastic. The medals and coins are simply amazing.

Amazing place to visit along with friends and family members especially children to understand our history and to understand different culture and the different civilization of the world. Main attraction of this museum is the first building where we can see stone statues of multiple dynasties. They have even placed the skeleton of whale, elephant and other animals in the Zoology section of first building. They have a huge collection of Raja Ravi Verma's paintings. Draw back of this museum is there is no maintenance, whatever is available today (11th December 2021) don't know whether they would be able to retain for another fifty years due to poor maintenance. So Govt. has to take immediate step to modernise this museum so that it lasts for atleast another fifty years otherwise we would lose this landmark place.

Huge museum without not much big renovation or upgrades in recent years. Ample car and bike parking. If this was upgraded then Egmore museum will become hot tourist attraction spot in the city. Science park is very worst. You’ll feel like entering into 80’s or 90’s time period. Nice opportunity to visit British period building and see their architecture.

This museum is located right on main road and easily accessible. There are many section like Anthropology, Numismatics, Children's Museum, Archaeology, stone/metal statues including one fossilized tree, Art Gallery etc. Maintenance is going on and due to this couple of places are not allowed for visitors as of today 23-03-2019 and this may be completed soon. One need to take care of walking in open sun between buildings. The semi circular Museum Theater in the Museum Campus is very much visible from the Pantheon Road, a rare example of the Indo-Saracenic mode of architecture. The theater was built by the British in the year 1896 in the model of the then Globe Theater in London. Rest rooms and parking space are available. One large children play area is keeping children busy. The cleanliness need to be improved by management. Dogs though passive, visitors need to be aware of. One need to carry hat, sun protection cream, sun glass and drinking water to feel comfortable.

The Government Museum or Madras Museum is a museum of human history and culture located in the Government Museum Complex in the neighbourhood of Egmore in Chennai, India. Started in 1851, it is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata and is the tenth oldest Museum in the World.

Many of the ancient items dont have any description or name. Entry fee is 15₹ per adult. Parking fee 3₹

The museum and it's surrounding areas are huge and will take up a considerable able of time to cover completely. The facilities are clean and we'll maintained. There are currently in the process of renovating the place and the parts that are completed look real good. The exhibits are nice and interesting to watch and cover history, culture and science. There are no official markings or route guidelines to take. So you are on your own to find you way around and you have chances of missing exhibits. This is one place they can improve. Worth a visit.

It is the third largest museum in the world, and with 0.6 million visitors in 2018. It has the richest collections of bronze idols, 500 of them dating to 1000 BC, in Asia. In August 1778, the governor of Madras granted 43 acres for an estate to a civil servant, who, subsequently in 1793, assigned the grounds to a committee of 24 which then regulated the public amusements in the city. In 1821, the committee sold the main house and central garden space to E. S. Moorat, an Armenian merchant who, in turn, sold it back to the government in 1830. The government first used the buildings and the grounds as the collector's "Cutcherry" and later for the "Central Museum." The museum was originally established in a building on College Road in Nungambakkam in the year 1851 and was shifted to the present site in 1854. Many additions to the original building were constructed between 1864 and 1890. The core of the old museum building includes the only surviving remnants of the Pantheon, identified from the broad steps leading into it when viewed from the north. Amongst the additions is the Connemara Public Library, built with stained glass windows, ornate woodwork and elaborate stucco decorations, formally opened in 1896 and named after its progenitor. The building was built by Namberumal Chetty and was designed by Henry Irwin, with the interiors resembling those of Bank of Madras (SBI). The design included a huge reading room with a wooden ceiling between two curved rows of stained glass, supported by ornate pillars and arches embellished with sculpted acanthus leaves. It was supplemented with teakwood furniture, marbled floor, and decorative windows. All of these were restored in 2004–2007. The building now houses the Old Collection (pre-1930), which is used for reference purpose only.

One liner - If you are 🔬 Science 📺 L😍ver, you should definitely visit this place ASAP ############################ Visvesvaraya 👳 Industrial 🏭 & Technological 🚀 Museum 🛶 or VITM was established in the memory of the great scientist of Indian history and Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya. Situated next to Cubbon Park which is 10 mins walk from the Richmond Circle in Bengaluru serves as the center of Science and technology fusion, where people of all the ages should visit and learn from the history creators. The entry ticket is ₹75/- for adult and free for children below 5, I tried visiting on January 26 which is Republic Day of India however it was still open. There are so many great learning for people of all ages right from kids to adult, the way we interact with different machinery in our day to day life is easily explained over here in a demonstrable way which is really intuitive and awesome experience to witness. One of the best thing I liked about this place was that they are talking all precautionary measures for avoiding Covid like proper Temperature check, providing hand gloves during entry and keeping hand sanitizer at different areas and not to mention you can't enter without a mask.

The proposal for a Museum in Madras was mooted by the Madras Literary Society in 1846 AD and Sir Henry Pottinger, the then Governor, obtained the sanction of the Court of Directors of the East India Company in London. In January 1851 AD, Dr. Edward Balfour, Medical Officer of the Governor's Body guard was appointed as the First Officer in charge of the Government Museum. The notification in the Fort St. George Gazetteer dated 29th April 1851 AD contained the first announcement regarding the opening of the Madras Government Museum

There are separate buildings for stone carvings,Bronze,Coins gallery etc. There is a open auditorium where some stone carvins are kept which visitors can touch and take photographs. This musuem is at walkable distance from city bus stop

I went this place in a school trip, really unforgettable memories of the time, still wondering many rare master piece you want to see in this place absolutely marvelous in chennai. Then this is history - Established in 1851, Government Museum of Chennai is popular as the Madras Museum. Factually being the second oldest museum of India (after Kolkata’s Indian Museum), this museum is a treasure in itself! As a rich repository of finest masterpieces of art, archaeology, anthropology, numismatics and much more, the Madras Museum assures to lure one and all. Front building has a very interesting puppet gallery and galleries preserving the folk art and music. Bronze gallery – Besides the bronze artifacts, there are also numismatics and chemical conservation galleries. Children’s Museum is one section that fascinates all kids with is doll section, technology and science galleries. National Art Gallery has some excellent paintings and pieces of artistic marvels

Egmore museum is one of the finest informative centre to visit in chennai.Entrance fee was only 15/- per adult. If you opt take videos camera fee was 500. It has 6 centers inside. A child museum, activity center, anthropology, adichanallur excavations, zoological department, geology center, Ravi varma paintings, sculptures. It is highly highly exciting to see historic events and their remainings in front of us. The entrance fee was only 15 rps but we had spent almost 4 hours over there still left some things because the leg was paining. I would recommend to visit each center a day. Atleast the first center a full day and the other ones for the next day. Some of them were closed. Worth a visit.

CHENNAI GOVERNMENT MUSEUM IS AN INTEGRATED GOVERNMENT BUILDING COMPLEX THAT HOUSES SEVERAL KEY MUST-VISIT PLACES IN CHENNAI FIRST OF COURSE, IS THE MUSEUM BUILDING THAT HOUSES SEVERAL KEY HISTORICAL MATERIALS AND STATUES SOME OF THE MATERIAL GOES BACK TO CENTURIES, ANYONE INTERESTED IN HISTORY AND ARCHEOLOGY WOULD FIND IT HIGHLY RESOURCEFUL. THEN THERE IS A BUILDING THAT HAS A CHILDREN'S MUSEUM THAT WOULD HELP KIDS TO KNOW A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT INDIA AND THE WORLD EVERYTHING IS REASONABLY WELL MAINTAINED AROUND THE COMPLEX AND THE GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT DESERVES A LOT OF APPRECIATION! IT WAS GENERALLY WORTH A VISIT. I WOULD SUBMIT, THE GOVERNMENT IS DOING A BIG WELL HERE WITH TAXPAYERS MONEY IN FUNDING, EXPANDING AND LOOKING AFTER THESE INSTITUTIONS, AND PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT.

An incredible establishment by the govt. of Chennai and so well maintained! What a privilege to be here and able to witness history firsthand. Building 1 will let you do a deep dive into the various dynasties that ruled and perished in India. From religious figures to war artilleries to clothing to vessels, used in the earlier years of humanity, you can touch and feel almost all of it.

Parking is free and outside park some decent hotels are available. Entry ticket is cheap and affordable. Some build are new and some building are very old, so needed some major renovation. Similarly kids park need some renovation as well. Book sale has no back up power. Over all need some renovation.

The museum was magnificent, but there was nothing new to see. There they have kept 10th century statues that are the awesome handiwork of the people who lived in those days. If you are visiting for the first time, it will be a great experience. In the art gallery, the oil paintings are marvellous, especially one of the ravi Varma paintings that is extraordinary compared to others. I can say more about the museum, but we can't express the feeling through words. All should give it a try; it will be a terrific experience.

Amazing place. An absolute worth the visit. I visited here in April 2023. Location - It is located at approx 2 km from Nehru Park Metro station and 1.7 km from Egmore Metro. We walked from the Metro to reach here. It's a walkable distance, however please do keep a cap &/or an umbrella handy because the sun makes it quite uncomfortable. Use Google maps, it will make things easy. Tickets - Indian adults have to pay ₹30 for entry and ₹100 for taking pictures. Overview - The museum has 7 main buildings - Main museum building, Archeological museum, children museum, bronze museum, public library, museum theatre and an Art gallery. All of them are worthy of a visit. Do download the audio tour app from the QR code to understand the relevance of main artefacts in the museum. It makes the visit much more interesting. Staff members - Most of the guards are very friendly and help as much as they can to guide the tourists. However, there are a few typical government employee type people also who will make you wait while they are talking about what they will eat at lunch or such rubbish, and even talk rudely without any reason. Artefacts - Before going inside the museum, I feel each and everyone of us must really contemplate the value and hardwork of those who made the artefacts as well as those who fought tooth and nail to preserve it. That way the experience becomes really enjoyable and worthy. Artefacts dating 1st century till 20th century are placed in these places. It's really important to not touch these items which may lead to their speedy deterioration. Garden - A lush green garden is placed in the premises which acts as a resting place for the visitors. One may see various variety of flora and birds here. It is truly beautiful. Art gallery is a really special place with numerous mesmerizing paintings of Indian painters. It's heartwarming and awe inspiring to see such beautiful painting were adorned by Indian painters. It also felt great to see the influence of Greeks on Buddhism and it's subsequent growth along with Hinduism. I would suggest everyone to be prepared to tackle the hot environment inside the museum because of absence of AC and fans. Do keep 1-2 bottles of drinking water handy along with some chocolates. Do use the dustbins provided in the campus. This museum is so good that if one is looking at all the artefacts with detail then it would take almost 2 whole days to feel the satisfaction of successful completion of the tour. However, it is also possible to complete the whole tour in 3-4 hours if one doesn't spend time at each and every artefacts individually. However, I would recommend the former technique along with the audio tour.

It is both what you expect to see at a museum as well as a curious mix of odds and ends that kept the entire visit entertaining. (For instance, there is just an unusually high amount of taxidermy present in the museum, which alludes to just how much work went into setting up the animal displays!) While a bit woefully undermanaged in some areas which require updating and restoration, it's a worthwhile stop and more so given that it's right next to a children's museum and an art gallery. And can anyone afford to miss the staging outside of a stegasaurus with a monstrous t-rex (even though they're technically from different epochs, but still fun to look at nevertheless).

The museum is very vast. It can take a good 4-6 hours to visit all the compartments. Artefacts vary from fro Indus Valley Civilization era earthen pots to whale skeletons. It is the ideal place to visit if you are an interested in anthropology. Although, the maintenance can be much better than what it is presently.

  • 5/5 Ross T. 4 years ago on Google
Forming part of the Govt Museum are some buildings from around the early 1900s of architectural merit, sadly they are in need of maintenance, but they are still worth a visit on their own. As for the museum contents, certainly from an ethnological, cultural and religious point of view they are very much worth a visit with statues of Hindu, Jain and Bhuddist deities, a myriad of ancient musical instruments, spectacularly intricate jewellery in bronze, silver and gold, many set with precious gems and demonstrating a long long history of beautiful bling. The forms and shapes of a thousand years ago are as fresh as ever and rival modern jewellery that is created with modern tools and technology. The names of the carved deities give a westerner some appreciation of the origins of recurrent names that appear as company names and brands, people's names and street names in today's modern India. Apart from the traditional aspects there is also a good representation of fauna, flora, reptiles, fossils and fish. Overall very worthy of a visit.

Do you love artefacts? If you do, you will love the Government Museum of Chennai. This place is known for preserving some of the best ancient (10-13th century) and modern South Indian bronzes. What’s more is that the Amaravathi Gallery houses marble sculptures depicting the life of Gautam Buddha dating as back to 2nd century. Truly a gem of a place to visit in Chennai for kids and grownups alike!

The theatre here has the ancient auditorium with a vintage appearance and perfectly maintained. The specimens here are extremely useful for students and research scholars. The museum depicts all the deity statues of different religions and from different places mainly from South India and western Coastal regions. The museum has a children's park. It has periodic table and this table has chemical names and scientific names in it,which is quite interesting and informative. The temple cars (rathas) are beautiful and one should not give a miss. Everything here is neatly maintained and also has all basic amenities. Good place to spend time usefully with family. The ancient treaty and monarchy can be felt there. From the canons and war weapons to ornaments of women, utensils they've used and their lifestyle can be felt there. It has mesmerising effects. We can feel the pride of our ancestors.

A grand old museum that's once again left to rot! Sadly despite all the tall talk of the Minister and officials in charge at ground level it's a big cipher when it comes to giving tourists a good museum visit experience. With dusty environs, lack of air-conditioning and hopeless discretion in crowd management a museum visit is a recipe for disaster for any discerning foreign tourist. Perhaps a talk less work more attitude would help for the authorities responsible or else you may just shut shop!

  • 3/5 Amit M. 3 years ago on Google
It was good and informative.. good for high school kids. Bad things 1) no tickets has been given ... Written on the back of payment slip of atm.. not sure authentication about where the money is going. 2) as it's government museum don't expect cleanliness 3) toilet/wash room for ladies are locked. 4) and worst thing is while leaving security at main gate was asking 10-20 rs for "Chay-pani" while leaving.

Excellency in peak! Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Bangalore is a part of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and was opened by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962. The museum is truly designed for all age groups with different education backgrounds. The museum does trigger the curiosity all all the visitors about: Physics Chemistry Machines Illusions Mathematics Mechanisms - all that in a very comprehensible way so that even an layman gets to know the secrets of Universe and machines. Its specially recommended for students of all age groups to trigger their scientific temperament and to ignite their quest for the unknown and known . The rolling machine contraption installation spread over two floors is the biggest attraction.

It was very old but still well maintained, so neat and so systemically run by the government of Tamil Nadu, You could see the Art works the painting of famous eminent Personalities. Of course as of now some maintenance work is going on. So wait for few days then you can see full coverage of the entire museum. In one block shocking I was human skulls, they were once solider the armed people who lost their lives in battle field. Many old warriors dress and their tools to fight. Ancient sculpture and letters written on iron plates by British ers. In front you can see dinosaur models . Kids like those pics. And out side animals shapes figures and neat and greenery park like places.

Awesome place within in Chennai for a day's visit..has 6 different sections from sculptures, zoological section, real life size depiction of animals, birds area, Miniature structures, ancient civilisation, antique bronze idols all from 9th century onwards, war weapons were displayed and antique pots, various cultures, excavation items also displayed, have a separate arts gallery having paintings of various artists including Raja Ravi Varma, and few contemporary artists too..each area has a very good illustrative posters to read, they have lot of items from even indus valley civilization ..to my surprise beautifully maintained space by government...if you are not fit enough for a full day walk..please split your visit into 3 different days covering 2 sections each and you can spend enough time at each section and learn something really worthy..you would find manuscripts by Mahakavi Bharathiar too..good parking area and nice ancient structures..it looked like a place outside India...my heartfelt appreciation goes all the workers there..for time being all the shops inside are closed due to covid restrictions..hence plan your food accordingly...Inside the campus you would find Connemara Library and a permanent book fare too..enjoy a day out in Chennai Govt. Museum....

A museum is an institution that cares for a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance. Many public museums make these items available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. This is one of them. 🤞

A killer offer at 15/- per adult. It spans a vast area, and the bulk seemed to be archaeological, which I couldn't focus on, as the purpose was to entertain the kid. But the biological sections were extremely exciting, with the multitude of animal skeletons, stuffings and live motion dinosaur exhibits, which left my kid shivering with fear and excitement. Carry own snacks and water and enjoy the shaded sitting spaces outside as you need anywhere between 1-3 hrs to cover it all depending on how much attention you pay to the exhibits. They frown upon clicking pics/videos inside, but take requests kindly for a few especially with kids. Another thing I noticed was that they seemed to have lots of facilities for the differently abled, in the form of ramps or mechanised rails over stairs in most places.

The Government Museum, Chennai, or the Madras Museum, is a museum of human history and culture located in the Government Museum Complex in the neighbourhood of Egmore in Chennai, India. Started in 1851, it is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata and is the tenth oldest Museum in the World. It is particularly rich in archaeological and numismatic collections. It has the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe. Among them, the colossal Museum Theatre is one of the most impressive. The National Art Gallery is also present in the museum premises. Built in Indo-Saracenic style, it houses rare European and Asian painting of renowned artists, including that of Raja Ravi Varma. It is the third largest museum in the world, and with 0.6 million visitors in 2018. It has the richest collections of bronze idols, 500 of them dating to 1000 BCE, in Asia.

This is a museum where you can find a lot of artworks, paintings, libraries, cultural heritage moments, etc but unfortunately, they didn't take proper care of it. In some places light is not properly working, some boxes have no objects, some places have cleanliness issues, etc. If the management can take proper care of it then it's one of the best places to visit. The ticket charges are Rs 15/- for 1 adult. Make sure you are double vaccinated as they allow only vaccinated people to enter museum.

Good place to see all age group. Especially for children. It takes 4 hours to see all 5 buildings. Evening 5pm it closes. More historic things particularly about ancient Tamilnadu. All Indian culture are well show cased. Tamilnadu's Kiladi samples are well displayed.

Very very reasonable entrance ticket at 15 rupees for adults. Quite extensive museum with lots and lots displays. But very hot and sweaty inside the museum not even the fans were switched on, they can increase the ticket price and maintain the place even more properly. Having said that really impressed with the size of the museum and you really need atleast 3-4 hrs to see all the displays properly.

The madras museum (Government Museum Chennai), known around the world as on one of the oldest museums in the world, is Chennai's must go places. Its collections are vast, but their exhibits are below par. There are lots of scope for improvement, but I don't mean to discredit what already exist. While you walk through the museum also keep an eye up for those beautiful stained-glass windows that are rare to find these days.

This museum is a great place to visit ... Especially for children in age group of 8-15 . Since it has lots of information on different type of period like stone age , medival age , bronze age etc .. and has information on different type of animals..the most important part of this museum is it has information of civilization about past rulers , arts and culture of Tamil Nadu...

I liked it. Disregarding the fact that you will have a lot of ground to cover through the entire museum, the various branches will keep you in awe about our history. 5 buildings all in all, spread aparts quite well, you will need to start early, and if you like taking your time reading into the details, i recommend bringing energy drinks.

A truly must visit spot. Being a Chennaiite, wasn’t sure what value add a museum would be to me but this place left me speechless. The entry fee is INR 15 and that covers most exhibits not to mention a few open air ones. The sculptures and carvings are simply brilliant. I didn’t have much time to explore as much as I’d like to but you can easily spend a day here and not know the time pass. Four wheeler and two wheeler parking available. Photography isn’t allowed for most of the closed exhibits.

This place is full of knowledge, history, paintings, historic & religious sculptures from mainly Chola dynasty, dianasour sculptures, library, Gandhi gallery and a lot more. Parking is very spacious & free. Ticket is just 15 Rs only for all the attractions within its compound. It's such a cool & quite place amidst chennai's hot crowded street that you can spot hundreds of students studying here n there, which feels good.

This is by far the best museum I've ever been to and it's so big and there are so many sections of different artifacts that you're gonna need a whole day for this, and yes it's one of the best places to visit in Chennai.

This place is very good for exploring the history of south India, with many things to learn. The history goes back to Mauryan empire and there bronze museum is pretty exquisite. The ancient very in very large amount.

  • 4/5 Abhishek 4 months ago on Google
There is a substantial number of artifacts, fossils and other articles. Worth spending some time. The building seems to be some old palace or residence of some imperial. Architecture resembles indo-saracenic style. One star less because of lack of maintenance; name cards, boards look very old, there was a lot of dust and spider webs near the exhibits, some areas were empty.

Today I visited the Government Museum in Chennai, also known as the Madras Museum, and I was amazed by its sheer size and incredible array of historical artifacts and cultural heritage. Established in 1851, this treasure trove houses an extensive collection spanning various fields like archaeology, numismatics, art, and natural history. Visitors can explore fascinating exhibits such as ancient sculptures, coins, rare manuscripts, and the impressive Bronze Gallery showcasing exquisite Chola bronzes. This iconic institution offers an enriching journey through India's rich past and diverse cultural legacy.
