One of the best places I visited until today If you find a peaceful place except the temple, you must visit this place and spend lots of time here. You will find lots of heritage buildings and a beach where you can spend quality time. This is a combination of heritage and a clean beach. Mahabalipuram is famous for its vast beache, monoliths, stone carvings, and temples. Visit with your family and enjoy it a lot. The best historical place ever One of the largest temple complexes in the world Wonderful stone works, It's a much more attractive place for tourists. It is always crowded on Sundays and government holidays. You must visit with your friends and family to make some memorable moments with them. The stonework of these monuments is famous worldwide.

The group of monuments are a bit spread out in Mahabalipuram but easily coverable in 1.5-2 hours. The Pancha Rathas and shore temple are in separate complexes but the rest are in one single complex. Key ones are Pancha Rathas, shore temple, Ganesh ratha, Krishna's butterball, pancha Pandava Cave and Arjuna's penance. Would recommend starting early as it gets hot after 9 am. We started at 7.30 am and completed at 9 am. Keep the ticket safe (35 rs) as you need to show it at entry points. We had a car but there are autos plying.

A great place to visit, max. 2 hours by car from Chennai. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples and caves, furnished by the Pallavas in the ancient times... have been maintained well. The complex is best viewed from the Mahabalipuram lighthouse.

Idk history but it's a Significant place for tourists witnessing South Indian architecture which are specimen of Dravidian temple architecture and Pallava art. Mamallapuram is a excellent destination with just a short drive away from Chennai along the superb ECR highway... Visit this historical place earlier asap so you can avoid crowds and roam peacefully orelse vendors will irritate like a hell. **Worst case is fees are triple the price high for foreigners and its not fair, Treat everyone equally and make our nation pride coz we all are humans at the end. Kind req : Keep the place healthy & clean 💚

We reached Shore Temple at 6:00am and finished all the historical landmarks by 11:00am. I am glad that we are allowed to enter at 6:00am - this allows us to avoid the hot sun later in the day. Also planning to visit later in the evening to see the same landmarks lighted up. Suggestions for improvement: More toilets at various locations and maintain them well. Cleanliness is key. Maps at all important landmarks, showing the relative locations of other historical spots (with distances) will be very helpful.

Beware to avoid during summer heat and holidays else you’ll be drawn in the pool of people. You can hire auto for 100 bucks to go from one monument to another. Be sure to buy one ticket only for 40 bucks which covers all monuments for the day. Also pay only once 75 bucks for entry in the city.

The temples of Mamallapuram, portraying events described in the Mahabharata, were built largely during the reigns of King Narasimhavarman and his successor Rajasimhavarman and show the movement from rock-cut architecture to structural building. The city of Mamallapuram was founded by the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I in the 7th century AD. The mandapa or pavilions and the rathas or shrines shaped as temple chariots are hewn from the granite rock face, while the famed Shore Temple, erected half a century later, is built from dressed stone. What makes Mamallapuram so culturally resonant are the influences it absorbs and disseminates. The Shore Temple includes many reliefs, including one 100 ft. long and 45 ft. high, carved out of granite. Neolithic burial urn, cairn circles and jars with burials dating to the 1st century BCE have been discovered near Mamallapuram. The Sangam age poem Perumpāṇāṟṟuppaṭai relates the rule of King Thondaiman Ilam Thiraiyar at Kanchipuram of the Tondai Nadu port Nirppeyyaru which scholars identify with the present-day Mamallapuram. Chinese coins and Roman coins of Theodosius I in the 4th century CE have been found at Mamallapuram revealing the port as an active hub of global trade in the late classical period. Two Pallava coins bearing legends read as Srihari and Srinidhi have been found at Mamallapuram. The Pallava kings ruled Mamallapuram from Kanchipuram; the capital of the Pallava dynasty from the 3rd century to 9th century CE, and used the port to launch trade and diplomatic missions to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia....

You will have a gala experience looking at all of the ruins out here. It surely is going to make your day trip to Mahabalipuram even better. Just a suggestion for the site managers. Please make sure to do the signages in the most proper way so that people do not have to get lost while going from one monument to the other. If it is done in a particular way so that one comes after the other, it would make the experience even more better.

At the time of its creation, the site was a busy port during the reign of Narasimhavarman II of the Pallava dynasty. As one of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. It is one of the oldest structural (versus rock-cut) stone temples of South India. Shore temple is a complex of temples and shrines. #DivineIndia

The group of monuments date to the reigning period of the Pandavas, 7th and 8th century. You can also explore one of the largest open-air rock relief in the world, which is included in the group of monuments. This place offers too many antique temples at one stop. And this place seems to be the perfect destination for the historical enthusiasts. It is spread over a large area and it is favourable to get a guide who can help you in knowing the stories about each of the temples. It takes an entire day to see the places properly if one is interested to see all of the temples closely. The carvings and sculptures are unique from one another and all of the monuments are well-maintained and clean.

1,400 years ago Mamallapuram, or Mahabalipuram as it was known, was the bustling port-capital of the Pallava dynasty. Today it is a small, tourist-friendly town that can be crowded with day-trippers (from Chennai) and schoolchildren. But with its monolithic sculptures - temples carved from a single rock - it is very worthy of its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. There are over 40 carved monuments in Mamallapuram. They're spread out just enough that renting a bicycle to see them is a good option. (You can also get around by walking, rickshaw, or taxi.) The most popular of the monuments are the Shore Temple, Panch Rathas(Five Rathas), and Arjuna's Penance. Mamallapuram is an easy 1 1/2 hour drive from Chennai. You can hire a taxi or take one of the inexpensive buses from Chennai (they run every 30 minutes). It's also a great stop if you're traveling between Pondicherry and Chennai. The best time to visit is between November and March. A month-long open-air dance festival takes place in December/January and encompasses the Christmas and Pongal celebrations. (Program information and tickets are available at the tourist office.) Although Mamallapuram is a great day-trip destination, it's also a great place for a beach holiday. Just outside of the town are several beach resorts. In town there are plenty of restaurants, shops (carvings, obviously!), and inexpensive guesthouses.

This is the same place which Modi and XI (china ) visited in 2019. Monuments are really good and picturistic. Please hire a guide to understand the history that will create a story which will help to understand the logic behind these monuments. Please keep some change as people will be coming to sell something or other. A small help for them is really good . Guide will also help you to take to different places otherwise on your own you could waste time and you will not enjoy .

Mahabalipuram was quite an underrated town for us and thats y it took us by surprise. Its beautiful, ancient & so mysterious. Start off with buying a 35/- ticket, which covers all monuments. We first visited Shore Temple, unique in its own way. At a walkable distance are the rock sculptures, panch rathas, light house, krishna s butter ball and a lot more. We spent an easy 2 hours here exploring everything. Though this location is not marked right on Google Maps, this is just the location of Shore Temple. Nevertheless itll be fun to just explore the whole town on feet.

A great place to visit. Even amidst pandemic, since it is quite spread out. It is pretty hot. And to cover all places in Mahabalipuram, you can plan for a full day trip. Obtain an e-pass from Archeological Society site. Small snacks and water available. Pretty well maintained. Clean. A good place to explore. A recommended place to visit for those interested in Archeology, History etc. Almost 1-2 hrs away from Chennai Central.

Mahabalipuram is closed on 15th , 16th and 17th Jan 2021, I guess this is to avoid overcrowding for all safety measures. 👍 It was a disappointing experience of visiting and seeing the sign boards in Tamil indicating the closure. Cops were standing at the barricades and guiding people about the closure. Will plan to visit later .......hopefully soon!!

It is an old city situated in Chengalpettu district. Well known for monuments, most of them are carved out of the living rock. These monuments are build in 7-8th century. There is a shore temple nearby. Cave temples are the major things which can be seen here. Most of the structures are made by carving single rocks. Bigger rocks can be seen here which is in a ready to move position, but not moving! An old light house is here, Draupadi’s tank can be seen which is just like a bath tub. This is one of the major places to visit in Tamilnadu. Entrance fee is 10₹. Historical place. Suitable for family.

Built during the 7th century, Shore Temple is one of the oldest South Indian temples constructed in the Dravidian style and depicts the royal taste of the Pallava dynasty. The work of the temple has been listed amongst the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. It is located in Mahabalipuram and is one of the most photographed monuments in India situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The Shore Temple's name originated as a result of its overlooking the shore of Bay of Bengal. It is built with blocks of granite which can be dated back to the 8th century AD. It comprises of three shrines, where the prominent ones are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. In the Sanctum Sanctorum an image of Shivalinga is present. Towards the end, two shrines facing each other can be spotted. One shrine out of this is dedicated to Ksatriyasimnesvara and the other one to Lord Vishnu. The image shows Lord Vishnu reclining on the 'Seshanag' which depicts "consciousness" in Hinduism. The Shore Temple is no more a living temple. It was constructed as a work of art. The Pallavas, who were known to be great patrons of art wanted to create a temple in their own style of architecture. At present, Shore Temple is made the background of the Mahabalipuram Dance Festival which is held in January/February every year. The festival marked as well as promoted the traditional dance as well as tourism in Mahabalipuram. The temple looks beautiful due to the lights during weekend evenings.

The Cave Temples of Mahabalipuram are part of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, less well-known than the ratha temples. They are located on the hillock of the town, overlooking the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal in Kanchipuram District in Tamil Nadu, India. They are cut and decorated with panels in the Mamalla style of the Pallava period in the 7th century. They are differentiated from the Adiranchanda cave temples which are dated to the Mahendraverman period of the 8th century. Remnants seen in the caves also indicate that they were plastered and painted when built. One of the most impressive sculpture panels, bas-reliefs, carved on the walls in the caves is that of the goddess Durga (a form of goddess Shakti) who killed Mahishasura the buffalo-headed demon which has a natural beauty with elegance of sense of movement. Many of the caves of the Pallava period have remained incomplete. The procedure in creating these caves involved creation of a smooth rock face, then cutting columns through the polished rock faces of required size and then carving bas-reliefs on the walls of the cave. @RameshSmile😊 15/05/2020

This group of sanctuaries, founded by the Pallava kings, was carved out of rock along the Coromandel coast in the 7th and 8th centuries. It is known especially for its rathas (temples in the form of chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), giant open-air reliefs such as the famous 'Descent of the Ganges', and the temple of Rivage, with thousands of sculptures to the glory of Shiva.

The Shore Temple is both a rock cut and a free-standing structural temple. The entire temple stands on a naturally occurring granite boulder. The complex consists of three separate shrines: two dedicated to the god Shiva, and one to Vishnu. The Vishnu shrine is the oldest and smallest of the three shrines, The other elements of the temple, including the gateways, walls, and superstructures were constructed out of quarried stone and mortar.
