I went to SPS (Sri Pratap Singh ) museum of Srinagar, which is located at the Lal Mandi just opposite to the Ghanta Ghar of Lal chawk where a foot bridge just need to cross. During this winter inside the building bit was too cold. Good collections of terracotta carvings from the belt of Indus and Jhelum. The earlier buildings is renovated currently and the museum is shifted to the adjacent new building. The earlier wooden building was the Maharaja's summer house. Enough collection of Gandhara carvings. Strict security and ticket price is 10 INR only. Photography charge is separate.

The best museum in shrinagar. The whole history of Kashmir is unveiled through the sculpture, monuments, idols, painting etc. Ticket per person is just 10 rs. For photography it's 235 rs per floor. Total floors are two. Ground floors have mostly 4th century sculptures. Those are mostly from Hinduism and Buddhism. Various deities are shown. Second floor has cultural heritage history of Jammu, Kashmir and laddakh area.

Shri Pratap Singh Museum, commonly known as the SPS Museum, is a museum in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Established in 1898, the museum houses a collection of over 80,000 objects from various regions in Northern India. History In 1889, a proposal for the foundation of an archaeology museum in the Indian city of Srinagar was formulated by Amar Singh and S.H. Godmerry. Singh was an officer in the British Indian Army, while Godmerry was a scholar. The pair produced and submitted a memorandum to Pratap Singh of Jammu and Kashmir, the ruler of Sringar and Amar's older brother. The Majarah accepted the proposal and agreed to allow for the establishment of a museum; this new institution would house artifacts from Jammu, Kashmir, Baltistan and Gilgit. The museum was to be located inside a state-owned building near the Jhelum river. The establishment of the museum was overseen by John Marshal, a British archaeologist (and future director of the Archaeological Survey of India) who was renowned for his work in preserving the archaeological history of India. Srinagar's Accountant General, one Mr. Blerjee, was appointed as the first president of the museum; Blerjee was also tasked with recording a large collection of coins the museum added to its collection. The museum opened to the public in 1898, with its first collection consisting of items from Majarah Pratap's palace treasury. Following the re-organizational efforts of Indian archaeologist Daya Ram Sahni in 1913, the museum received objects recovered from archaeological excavations in Panderenthan, Parihaspora and Avantipura. The collection of the museum continued to grow through the donation of items by private collectors; many of these items were domestic or household in nature. In 2017, the museum finished constructing a second building. The new building was built to be fire and earthquake resistant, and is used to house some of the SPS's more popular exhibits. The older 19th-century building remains in use.

They have coin collection since beginning of using coins as currency, All sorts of stuffed animals, birds etc. and much more.A learning place for kids to get aware of history. Entry ticket is just 10/- and at 5 min walking distance from lal chowk and 10 min from dal gate.

The ticket price is 50 rupees for foreigners. Taking photos are needed to be charged for extra. You need to keep your belongings in the locker cubby outside. If you're interested in Hindu gods or Buddhist, there are lots of info here.

The museum is in Lal Mandi. You cross the bridge near Lal Chowk and reach here. Don’t forget to buy the pamphlet. You will love it. When I visited it was winter and light was not there. Hence , the pictures of specimens are a bit dark.

This place has large collection of Hindu deity idols, ideally this is one of the most significant museums in India however the premises has very poor construction standard, the floor tiles has come off, cracked at some places, electrical wiring is exposed, passanger lift is non-functional, PoP material is broken into pieces thereby giving perception of how badly govt premises are maintained in our country. If u take a closer look at the pictures then even the restrooms are filthy, I wonder how a woman will feel while she is in it. I'm of firm opinion that we have to preserve our heritage and exhibit them in grandeur. If anyone agree then pls report it to the State ministry or central so that adequate care is taken in maintaining the premises. I've done my part, its upto you to do yours. Thank you.

A fairly well-maintained museum with a good collection. However, the staff is quite unprofessional. While the stated closing time is 4:30 pm, they begin closing the gallery doors and switching off the lights at 4:10 and basically chasing visitors off, even though there were a few groups genuinely interested in viewing the artifacts. One must also take into consideration the fact that museums around the world are open till 5 or 5:30.

Really good set of artifacts, enclosing great Kashmiri, Ladakhi and Dogra heritage, with quality statues of various gods (mainly vishnu), paintings, a number of coins, crafts, utensils etc. Also contains various south Indian and Tantric sculptures. Nice copies of ancient houses (maybe Burzahom) made. Everything was explained in good detail. But, the only thing this place lacked was good lighting. Sometime it requires a phone to be used.

A must visit place if you are in Srinagar. I was amazed by the extensive collection of excavated & restored pieces of our history, exhibited here. The original museum building is the erstwhile Palace next door that's under restoration, so a new building houses the collection. I was a bit saddened by the fact that they were barely 6 or 7 visitors in the whole building when we went. I am hoping more visitors visit this place to understand more about Kashmir & its history. However, lighting of the exhibits needs a serious improvement. The numismatics section needs more attention to how the coins are displayed. Slivergrey coins mounted on a dark grey background are barely seen. The taxidermy gallery needs to be decluttered as too many exhibits cram the display units, making it a tad bit unpleasant to view & appreciate. But overall, it is an interesting place to visit. Ticket is Rs. 10 per person. There are six galleries in the museum. If you want to take photos of the exhibits, you have to pay on per gallery basis.

Old coins, currency notes dating back to thousands of years and idols dating back to extreme old civilization is the collection of this museum. Extreme informative place for history lovers and is on way to Srinagar airport. Extremely cheap tickets about 20₹ per person and if you want to take photos, you have to pay as less as 50₹. One important note, if you go to the museum, gate seems to be closed, tell the security personnel you want to visit the museum then they allow you in. During our visit, the gate was closed and we were about to return thinking it's closed..
