One of the oldest and beautiful Masjid Paak at Fatehkadal Srinagar. Built by Noorjahan in 1623 AD, this monument is historical legend and is under Archeological Survey of India (ASI) Srinagar Circle.

This mosque is locally known as Naev Masjid and built by Mughal Empress Nur Jahan the wife of Emperor Jahangir, in 1623 AD, constructed under the supervision of Mughal historian and architect Malik Hyder Chaudhary. Generally, mosques in the valley were built with wood while this mosque built with stone, as most of the Mughal edifices were built with Marble. Pathar masjid was built with locally available grey limestone and the style is practically the same as edifices found in Delhi and Agra. The grey limestone was generally used in Kashmir for face work and this stone is an excellent material for carving and for moldings. Also, high grade of polish is possible on this stone and same testified in the pavilion of Shalimar Bagh. The facade of Pathar Masjid, "The Stone Mosque" consists of nine arches including a large arched portico in the middle. The arched openings are enclosed in shallow decorative, cusped arches and horizontal construction of these arches is outstanding. If this mosque compared with the other Mughal architectures in India, certainly it is not as grand like other but it is really unique in Kashmir. The plinth of the mosque is very impressive, as lotus leaf coping on it and looks excellent. Also, this mosque does not have the traditional pyramidal roof that visually separates this mosque from other mosques in the valley.

Such an amazing historical place to visit. Also called shahi masjid. Visit on summer evenings and your soul would be nourished. You can offer asr and then stay till maghrib. Masjid is made out of stone which makes it cool during summers. Lawn is good and laying there soothes soul. During Ramadan, families visit and have iftari there.

A beautiful Mughal Era mosque, Pathar Masjid is a stone mosque built by Empress Noor Jahan in 1623. The mosque stands out owing to its distinctive limestone architecture. While the landscape of Srinagar is predominantly dotted with wooden structures, the mosque stands proud as a testament to the splendour of the Mughal era. One other feature that sets it apart is that the mosque lacks the traditional pyramidal roof and has nine mehraabs (arches). A legend states that when the empress was asked how much the mosque cost, she replied indirectly, pointing to her jewel-studded shoes, and said, "As much as that"! The mosque is situated on the left bank of River Jhelum in Nowhatta area. The mosque' surroundings are pristine, giving a feeling of peace and tranquility

Pathar Masjid is a magnificent building, unique both in design and structural prototype. Although it was initially constructed as a mosque, it was never used as such.Pathar Masjid was built by Empress Nur Jahan in 1623. Unlike most other places of worship in Kashmir Valley, this mosque was built with grey limestone. Since stone in local language is known as pathar and mosque is known as masjid, the edifice so built began to be known as Pathar Masjid. It is to be remembered that mosques in Kashmir were generally built with wood while most Mughal edifices were built with marble. Perhaps the Queen chose limestone because she realized that in absence of a transport system bringing marble stones from the plains would be an impossible task. Contrarily grey limestone was found locally; in addition such stones could be carved and polished easily. Therefore, she decided to build the mosque with limestone. Now, it is said that Nur Jahan was once asked about the building cost of such a magnificent structure. The Empress did not answer directly. Instead she pointed to her shoes, which were embossed with expensive jewels and said, “As much as that”. When this remark reached the religious leaders they found the reference to be sacrilegious and declared the masjid to be unfit for religious activities. Since then, the mosque is lying idle. However, another version says that the mosque was desecrated because of its architectural style; it followed a distinct Mughal pattern rather than indigenous Kashmiri style.

Aesthetic mosque made entirely of stones. Remains open for prayers only during summers. The arches are preserved as they were (open) makes it really unbearable to pray during harsh winters. A must visit place.

Beautiful architecture and a lot of history to look at. Although the place needs more limelight than what it is receiving, right now in order for it to survive. A must vist for scenic and serene experience.
