Welland Canal Lookout

Observation deck

👍 Good lookout platform to view ships but you have to enter the building and risk Covid-19 transmission to access the platform. The outside access (safer option) has been sealed off even during operating hours. Lots of parking (free). People often mention ships, watch, canal, ship, Great, time, lock, museum, visit, Welland,

This is a must stop if you are nearby. It's even better if a ship is passing through. Fortunately when we were there one was just going down the canal just before it came to the lock, so we had plenty of time to get there and watch it come through. There are several websites where you can see the ship schedule so you can time your visit to match with a ship passing through.

Great place to watch the ships go through the canal and learn about the history of the area. Clean washrooms, great exhibits, and extremely friendly staff. It’s Completely free and they have good COVID precautions. I highly recommend you check it out, especially when there’s a ship coming through. You can call them or check their twitter for the daily ship schedule.

Enjoyed spending time watching two boats as they passed by coming and going through the lock. We didn't realize the museum was there, would have spent more time if we had it, especially since we love lacrosse so much! It took about 30 minutes to watch the one boat enter and leave, quite mesmerizing to watch!

A very nice place to get oxigenated these days of isolation due to the virus. Nice views and if you are lucky you might watch a ship in the excluses. Everything else is closed due to the lockdown in the region

The Welland Canal Lock 3 features an elevated lookout platform to watch ships transiting the lock. I checked ship schedules ahead of time to make sure I would have a great experience. Unfortunately the ship I planned to watch arrived ahead of schedule and I missed it; and the next two were delayed by hours so I never got to watch a big cargo vessel! But the day was nice for October, and the museum attached to the lock is really well done. Two negatives to the experience. First, no boat - luck of the draw I guess but probably would have increased the star rating. Second, if you are into photography as I am, there is no place to really observe that is not looking through a chain link fence or metal bars. A viewing platform that provides better viewing, or perhaps cutout areas in the fence for photography would be nice.

Quite an experience to see those big ships climb the mountains. Completely awestruck after coming to know the whole history hidden behind this wonderful construction. There is a museum you can visit for free to learn more about this canal. And there is a schedule for us to know about the ship schedule. So check it before visiting. The whole canal is closed during winter. Lastly I would say we won't get a chance to see such a huge cargo ship so close. I loved this place.

Nice large parking lot. Saw a decent amount of ships in a short time between lock 1 and 3. Would definitely recommend knowing approx. timing of when ships would be locking up or down if you want to visit the museum/watch ships in the same time frame.

Great place to spend some time watching ships in the Welland canal going through the lock system and learning about the history of the canal. There's a playground/picnic area on site as well for kids and families.

This lookout is always a highlight! I have childhood memories of being here watching large ships go through the locks and I like to stop any time I’m passing by.

Excellent location to learn about the Welland Canal allowing ships to climb the mountain and bypass Niagara Falls between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Free parking and viewing stand, watch the huge lake freighters ascend and desend the canal levels right in front of you. You can almost touch the ships. Its interesting, free and the whole family will enjoy it. Kids playground on site. Snack bar on site as well as a shipping museum. Check Welland Canal, St Lawrence Seaway for ship arrival and departure times for lock 7 to not be disappointed.

This is probably the best spot to see the lock system on Welland Canal. You can watch ships from ground level or you can go up the stairs to watch from the platform above which is my favorite. There is also a museum about the history of Canal and other things which is interesting. There are washrooms and benches. You can check the schedule of the ships before going there so you won't be disappointed.

This is nice place to come on weekends or any afternoon and see the ships going by. Specially in summer time. There is trail where you can take a walk, ride your bike or jogging in summer or winter time.

It has been better in the past as the gates to lookout area were locked at 5pm. Previous times it has been wide open after 5pm.

We went through the canal. Both the canal website and its personal could not provide less information regarding taking a pleasure craft through the canal. It wasn't until we were in lock 6, that we were advised we had to wear life jackets...oh, and, they can't touch your boat, and make sure you have fenders on both sides...and take the line (you need to instruct them), that stops your boat from moving forward FIRST! Generally it would be the stern line. You need at least 2 people to go from Erie to Ontario and 3 from Ontario to Erie...regardless of the size of your boat. It would have been nice if it said any of that on their website or when we called them or when we got there. And regardless of the signs, they only contact you on channel 14.

Amazing views and got to watch an ocean liner cross through. The lookout is accessed through the museum and entrance is by donation. The museum has some interesting displays that are worth a visit. Although due to covid, you have to call and book a timeslot to go in as only limited people are allowed in.
