I have been in and out of the Emergency Department at the St. Catharines Hospital since June 30th and have taken some time to reflect on the experience. Of the three visits, it took over 6 hours to see a doctor every single time. My visits all had the possibility of becoming life threatening as I was waiting. I understand staff shortages and burn out but that does not replace respect and empathy for others, especially vulnerable, sick people. As I was waiting during my last visit, I witnessed an exhausted patient approach the triage RN and ask her a question. This resulted in the patient ending the conversation by saying they just wanted to go home. The triage nurse responded, "yeah, me too." I remember my jaw dropping as the nurse spoke those words to the sick patient. At that point I knew this was not a healing environment for anyone. This hospital is broken and needs fixing, especially if their "commitment is to provide extraordinary caring to every person, every time is receiving international attention, demonstrating Niagara Health’s leadership in creating positive change in quality and safety." Hearing that nurse speak those words to a patient did not make me feel like I was about to receive quality and safe care, I was glad she was almost done her shift. I could continue to write about the misfortunes of this facility but I believe my review will fall on deaf ears. I am hopeful one of Niagara's "leading" hospitals will shift their focus to be more patient oriented and address the large gaps in patient care.

With an increase in active COVID cases and a decrease in hospital staffing I can understand the wait and limited support. The 1 star is due to knowing this an having my disabled mother in hospital and making the point to be there to support her due to these increased risks and staff shortage; however them refusing access. Yes I made the hospital aware she is disabled and that I am her primary care provider. Yes I made the hospital aware she would need additional support and I was willing to provide it as again I am aware of the current climate of the world right now; however again they refused. Our health care system needs some restructuring if empathy and understanding are no longer necessary but optional quality’s each staff should have.

My wife was hemorrhaging and they just let her bleed all over the ER waiting room without doing anything for 3+ hours. She begged for a bed so she could lay down or even just a pillow and they refused. This could have become life threatening but they never really did anything for her; no IV, no medication, nothing. Sometimes I’d walk up to the nurses to ask for help and I’d see them playing on their phones. I’m just really upset with how everyone handled the whole situation. There was very little compassion or professionalism. It did not feel like a safe environment to be in for an emergency.

The lack of empathy in this hospital is concerning. I understand people are burnt from covid but the attitude and how insanely dismissive some of the staff are is unprofessional. Not only did I wait 11 hours in agony, they discharged me after talking to me for less then 5 minutes. 2 hours into being home I was rushed back and put in the ER for 3 days waiting on answers. Only checked on every few hours if that. I was finally admitted to the surgical floor, and nurses there were a breath of fresh air. I never want to come back here again, it makes me nervous even thinking about it.

Horrible experience! Stay away from this hospital and keep your loved ones away! Zero communication with family members. Rotating doctors with no fluid understanding of diagnostic results. Terrible bed side manners. This hospital should be ashamed of themselves. Patient relations must be backed up as I’m still waiting to hear back from them. Stay away!

This is by far the worst hospital. I understand staff shortages completely. But the way nurses talk to patients is absolutely disgusting. Not only did I have to wait over 6 hours for someone to see my new born with a fever, but trying to talk to any health care professional here is a joke. The triage nurse was condescending and didn’t even take to time to properly check out my new born. It’s unfortunate that this is the closest hospital to me or I’d never come here.

DONT GO HERE. Took my sister to ED due to complications with Covid, she was pale, shaking, couldn’t breathe or speak. She has an underlying condition whereby she couldn’t eat solid food and has trouble swallowing and breathing. Triage nurse yelled at her from across the waiting room and told her to get up and walk (she was in a wheelchair), ripped away her blanket and when she was taken into triage, proceeded to yell and curse my sister out for not wearing her mask properly, even though the paramedics advised against it as she could not breathe with one on. Gave my sister a panic attack and was shaking and crying. Five hours later when we were finally called we were told to essentially go back to our home town (we’re not from St. Catharines originally) and get treatment there instead (it’s several hours away). And then they turned her away, didn’t give her any medication, treatment plan or anything at all. Not to mention paramedics originally took twenty minutes to get there, standing outside in the parking lot as I was trying to usher them inside to get to my sister who was semi-conscious, just talking to each other.

I sand my daughter for the 5th time to ER with extreme abdomen pain. I am very discussed with Register Nurse attitude at the registration desk.if you don’t know what is the problem don’t tell my daughter to stop acting because averting is fine with her. I’m not aloud go with her because she is grown up but then you dot treat her with the respect.her condition can quickly turn to life-threatening situation. So none of the nurse should tell her you are fine and stop acting. What kind of health system we have here? I should not send her 5 times to ER in one week.

I HAVE SCIATICA, came from the local detox centre but I am from Scarborough so idk the area, they took 8 hours to see me just to give me a toradol shot. They then proceeded to give me a bus ticket to get back to the place I came from even though I arrived by ambulance and don’t know the area, horrible hospital, horrible staff, especially a certain blonde working in the emergency room. She shouldn’t be working in the health field.

Months ago had surgery. I had to return after being discharged. The lack of help and empathy was disgusting! No one would push wheelchair as I could hardly move due to JUST HAVING SURGERY! The triage nurse would not help push wheelchair into room and she didn't even want to help when getting off examination seat/bed. Even though I told her from surgery that sitting up I needed help. I'm small too and her reply when I asked for assistance was "I might hurt myself". I was not asking for her to full lift me, I asked that she place her arm along shoulder blades to assist while I get up. Pathetic! I was there in ER 13hrs before being admitted again. Which I was then there 7 days because surgery complications. In ER the lack of help continued. No one helped to push wheel chair because again I could hardly move or walk. No help to go to examination room, no help/assistance to lay for xray, and no assistance for MRI. Then once admitted the staff was amazing on floor. I believe it was unit D, and yet there's always one. Out of 7 days of being admitted there was one nurse who was rude and neglectful. Her name was Rachael. I had her for 2 days which seemed like a long nightmare. She never emptied my catheter bag until her 12 hr shift, she never changed or washed me, she didn't want to come in my room to do medication, she continuously closed my door and never did checks on me. Seriously the absolute worse nurse Ive ever come in contact with my entire life. Thank God the rest of the staff on that unit were absolutely amazing!

I was admitted for aorta bi femoral by pass While in surgery someone stole a tin of Quality Street Chocolates from the bottom of my personal bag of stuff, clothes etc... In recovery I had a nurse that spent her 1st hour discussing household blinds with in the hall way instead of checking on her patients. At the end of her shift my monitor flatlined & my call bell was not answered for 34 min, I have pictures covering 24 min of that time, while she heard all about Arrowhead holidays & a trip to London, again not checking on her patients I would highly recommend a different hospital for anything life threatening

I am seven months pregnant and having trouble breathing. I was brought through an ambulance up to the labour and delivery room where I am having trouble breathing and have called the nurses many times and pressed the red emergency button, but nobody has showed up or even asked me if I’m OK. Which means someone can die here, whether you’re pregnant or you are elderly or you’re a child and nobody would even know or care. The nurse pushed on my belly so hard to the point that I felt my baby get poked. Very unprofessional and very rude and careless I could hear them laughing in the dorm outside. Last time I gave birth at Etobicoke Hospital and it was the best experience of my life there’s a reason it has 4+ stars. DO NOT COME HERE .

My mum recently had to take my dad to ER. My dad had just had a pacemaker and an aortic valve replacement and was now having severe foot pain. Not knowing if this was related to his recent surgery My mum tried to explain but was met with the lack of empathy and understanding that any good nurse should give anyone. Still waiting to hear how my dad is, but wanted to post this review right away. My advise go to Hamilton or Burlington. Stay away from St Catharines.

My 73 year old Mom fell on June 8 at around 230pm. Its now June 9 and she has been in hospital for over 24 hours with a broken hip. In pain, no food or drinks. According to the nurses the Doctors can't decide when they will be able to do her surgery. She's on a list for surgery. Mom is starving and frustrated. My 83 yr old step dad and I are so worried and frustrated about it. I contacted patients relations, they say that they can't discuss her case. I'm OK with not discussing her case. But God's sake fix her hip.. I hope one of these Dr's breaks a hip and goes through the same thing they're putting my Mom through

My sister was hospitalized for 7 days, we want to thank the Nurses and Doctors for the wonderful compassionate care she was given. She is a senior and was treated with the best of care. She is home with us now and we appreciate your work during these trying times.

If you are thinking about going to emergency, go to Niagara Falls hospital emergency, which is way fast than this one. It should work more efficiently. If emergency could make you to wait almost 5 hours, why it should be called emergency.

There must be a policy that states, do not help the patient with their meals, do not make them comfortable in bed, make sure patient is NOT getting toilet… it’s a disgrace!!!! We hear all about the neglect and abuse in LTC but nothing is ever said about the neglect in hospital!!!!!

Took my mother to the ER yesterday and had the most horrible experience ever. It was emergency pod A.The bed given to her had lots of hair on the bedsheets, the gown smelled terrible and when asked to replace it looked like they gave the same one as it smelled the same. A trainee nurse was sent to draw the IV line which she failed in and could not get the vein. It caused immense pain and discomfort which was never apologized for. This led to a huge flare up of the hives attack on her right arm today. Her reports showed low haemoglobin and still they kept drawing blood for extra tests which could have waited as they weren't necessary for immediate care. It was for an appointment at a clinic which she had to go after a few days. This was wrong decision made by the doctor there. The excess drawing of blood has caused her blood pressure to drop( 90/56) causing her dizziness and weakness. Now who is responsible for her worsened state of health after visiting the ER? Very disappointed and upset. My advice is to never visit this hospital again. Please look for a better option for your loved ones.

I am totally appalled by the lack of empathy by some staff members.Espespecially the young triage nurse with the pink and purple hair. During Christmas week, my 80 yr. old mother was in the hospital to get xrays and ultrasound done. She was there since 9:30am-6pm. Upon completion of all her testing (which they ended up doing more), she asked above said nurse to please call her a cab, explaing her time spent there with no food. This so-called nurse told her to use the pay phone. Upon which my 80 yr. old mother explained that she did not bring any cah with her. She told this person, she was very tired and just wantd a cab to go home. She promptly told my mother to go back to the area she had come from and get them to call her a cab. So she did. Upon returning to ultra sound area the Attendant graciously called her a cab. My mother when telling me this story ,was in tears. My heart was breaking for her. Teach your staff how to treat people with repect and dignity. This was one phone call asked to be made by an elderly tired person who had spent her day being probed and prodded. By the time this triage nurse, had her refusal converstion with my mother, she could have made 12 dam phone calls to the cab company. My mother has been in the nursing field all her adult life, starting at the St. Catharines General Hospital and moving on to a Long Term Care facility for the rest of her career. Never would she have ever refused any kind of request asked to her by a patient or their family. Shame on you!!!

My mom is at this hospital, the first times she was here and got a feeding tube she aspirated. Ok mistakes happen, they are probably over worked and under staffed. She was transferred to a hospital in Hamilton and so much was done. She got so well she was requesting to go home.she was transferred back to this st Catherine's hospital and the decline started all over again. What got me the worst is that under 24 hours she gets a swollen lips, and severe weight loss.......the nurses said they don't see a difference. Whatttttt. This was not a gradual change this was over night. The very least a nurse can do is notice a change in patients conditions. I don't get it. How do I even have my mom transfered to a better hospital with better competent nurses? HELP HELP HELP

Waited in the ER with a fractured fibula for 8 hours. Was never offered any kind of pain relief, ice, elevation....nothing. Just sat in a wheelchair for 8 hours before they took me in for x-rays. I had already gotten x-rays done at a medical imaging centre, had the paperwork and a CD with the actual images on it, but apparently they don't accept x-rays from other facilities. So after all that time waiting, I had to get in the same extremely painful positions to have x-rays of my leg and foot done for literally no reason. I asked multiple people why they wouldn't accept the x-rays I had brought with me, and no one could give me a straight answer. I spent a total of 11 hours in the ER before they finally sent me on my way with an "appointment" to see a surgeon the next day. I say "appointment", because when I arrived at the scheduled time, I was triaged and registered in the ER (again, why?) and waited 4 hours before being able to chat with the surgeon. I have been waiting for orthopedic surgery for 6 days now. This is the second day I've been told that I'm "on the list". Yesterday, I woke up early because I was advised to and fasted all day, until about 3pm when they called to tell me that I wasn't getting in. So today is the same thing, just sitting here hungry and thirsty, hoping that someone will call me so I can get this over with. Some of the hospital staff were professional and kind, but this has been an overwhelmingly negative experience for me, full of redundancy and disorganization. It's also troubling that there are posters everywhere claiming that the hospital is a "zero tolerance" zone for harassment and violence, yet everyone had to sit in the ER for a solid hour listening to a junkie scream the N-word at people, using the most disgusting language, and threatening people. The security guards seemed sleepy and didn't care, as though this happens every day. What is going on with our hospitals?! I'm so disappointed in this province.

Someone went into your medical health unit at this hospital and had my car key which is a $410.00 key plus tax. When they recorded the stuff this person had in his bag was my car key and his watch. He gets his bag back yesterday and no key or watch. I try calling and no one seems to know anything. I call the customer relations and no one bothers to answer the phone. When you call the main desk and ask to speak to someone higher up and they say sorry we can’t do that. His bag was under lock and key buy the nurses and now it is gone. I am very upset and someone has to pay for this. If I could have given them no stars I would have. Terrible terrible hospital and this is a newly built hospital and is suppose to be better. Well where is the better.

Absolutely ridiculous. If you don’t have enough staff in this place to run it, why even open and continue taking patients? Waited nearly 2 hours in the waiting room with my 2 year old son who had a broken arm and wasn’t even triaged or registered yet. Meanwhile a majority of their staff are just playing on their phones while they’re on the clock. The lady behind the desk when you first walked in was absolutely horrendous and has no sense of compassion in her. Ended up leaving and going to Welland hospital. Ended up being seen, having a cast put on with sedation and out of there in 4 hours (Thanks Welland hospital staff) Will not be going back to this hospital again unless absolutely needed. Someone needs to fix our health care system or do something about this mess they created and hire some people that actually have a heart.

Just be mindful of the staffs chatting/cake time, us patients should really avoid needing care during that 15-25 minute window. Oh and just make sure to schedule your emergencies around the shift changes as it is very inconvenient to the staff.

My mom was brought into emerg with difficulty breathing very early on a Sun morning. I did talk to a nurse around 9 am who said she had an oxygen mask on and was doing ok. Mon I called 5 times not once did anyone pick up. Tues morning I was told she was moved to the 4th floor and asked to be put through to the nurses station. Again 3 times that day no one answered. Wed morning at 7 am they called me to tell me she passed!! I'm sick that my mom had to pass on her own not once seeing or talking to family. Is there no compassion?? Could they not have called while she was alive to say she was very ill? FaceTime with my mom? I'm so disgusted. Yet we were able to see her when she was gone!!

I called the ambulance for my girlfriend at 7pm on Saturday only for her to be brought to the hospital and as soon as she was taken from the EMT’s the nurses placed her in a wheelchair and sat her in the waiting room alone. SHE COULDNT BREATH OR SPEAK. When I got there I seen her sitting there alone in tears only getting worse. She was told if she gets worse to tell the triage nurse. I told the nurse what was going on only for her to tell me she won’t be seen “for a while” and “there is nothing I can give her” This hospital is a complete waste of time and the front of office staff/nurses are A JOKE I Know nothing will be done to help this situation so I am speaking to the public when I say DO NOT GO HERE. You are more likely to catch Covid then you are to get any help here. I’ve personally never gone here and been out in less then 6 hours. This hospital will cost you your health and your money. STAY AWAY

Gave birth to my daughter on may ,then I asked the nurse for a pair of underwear, she said don’t you have an underwear. Then I stopped asking ,honestly nurses role is supposed to be better then what I expected when I stayed here for three days. Then, I looked in the cabinet that was in the private room there was nothing. I paid $310 for a private room it was useless because the room wasn’t being cleaned or take the garbage.I’m sorry I wouldn’t recommend anyone to here because the nurses attitude are very bad ,not nice , they think they’re doctors ..like this is not how a nurse supposed to be..careless nurses.

Under funded ER , one doctor on overnight is ridiculous with half a dozen nurses not being patient utilised, leads to rude and unsympathetic staff. Eleven hours which includes 2 hour wait for a CT because I had been forgotten about with potential life threatening condition indicates this department is not functioning.

The new policy of no visitors is a great way to allow 0 accountability. You’re not allowed to visit or accompany elderly patients. They will not give you any information due to “privacy laws”. This was a direct quote from the nurse at the ER. The physician can call you if they choose to. This is a great way to remove patient advocates and treat people poorly. I was on site a months ago and an 80 something lady with a hip problem was upset at 11 pm she was left since 5am in a wheelchair with a hip problem and dumped in emerg to wait. We helped her get to the bathroom and bought her a drink because the hospital staff wouldn’t help her. There’s a door for minor emerg near the emerg waiting area and the nurse came out and told the woman she would need to move. This new policy is a great way to treat patients like garbage and have 0 accountability. Our father was brought by ambulance at 3am unresponsive. We have no way to tell how they are treating him or if they are caring properly for him. Given the abhorrent bedside manner of the nurses at the emerg window; we can only assume he’s being treated very poorly and we have now way to know the health of our loved one and the staff have no obligation or accountability to anyone from the general public.

Went to the check in, needed a stitch or two in my finger. It wouldn't stop bleeding. Checked in. Sat down and looked at the information board. It said 73 people seeking treatment, 38 people in treatment, 35 waiting, estimated wait time 3 and 1/2 hours. I left. It took 2 hours to get the bleeding to stop. I'll probably have a scar. Oh well. I won't wait 4 hours for a stitch. If it wouldn't stop I would have gone to the walk-in clinic the following day. Our emergency room health care in Ontario leaves a lot to be desired.

Very disappointed with our experience in ER and the care of my mother who is in heart failure. After 11 hours in emergency she has had no food no drink and no medication. Cardiologist told her she would be admitted and placed in a monitored bed in cardiology, however a very rude nurse has told me the doctors know nothing about available beds and my mom could be sitting in a chair all night. (Is not being monitored and has not been provided a buzzer or call bell.). She is not mobile and needs help getting to and from bathroom etc. Very very frustrated with our 1st experience here.

Never had a good experience at this hospital. Unfortunately have had more hospital trips then id like and every time its a mess here. Paramedics once diverted me to another hospital on request because they know how bad it is. When the paramedics are worried about the care someone will receive there's a massive problem.

Disappointing Experience I recently had a distressing encounter at Fourth Ave. Hospital, which left me with concern for the level of care and professionalism provided. While I understand that my visit was to the emergency mental health unit, the treatment I received was far from satisfactory. Upon leaving the bathroom and entering the isolation room, I was accompanied by multiple security guards, which immediately made me feel uneasy. Despite my nonviolent demeanor, one particular security guard in white attire forcefully grabbed my arm and maneuvered me into the room. The abruptness of his actions and the subsequent slamming of the door felt completely unnecessary and excessive. The aftermath of this incident has only added to my disappointment. Several weeks have passed, and my arm continues to throb, causing ongoing discomfort. I find it deeply concerning that an encounter meant to provide mental health support has resulted in a physical ailment. The incident itself raises serious questions about the hospital's commitment to patient well-being and safety. The use of excessive force in a situation where I posed no threat is entirely unjustifiable. It is disheartening to think that vulnerable individuals seeking assistance may be subjected to such treatment within the hospital's walls. Furthermore, the lack of follow-up or any acknowledgment of the incident has left me feeling neglected as a patient. It is crucial for healthcare facilities to take responsibility for their actions and address concerns promptly, ensuring that patients' physical and emotional well-being are prioritized. While I cannot deny that hospitals face complex situations daily, it is essential to approach each case with empathy, compassion, and a commitment to patient-centered care. Unfortunately, my experience at the hospital fell short of these expectations. I hope that my feedback serves as an opportunity for the hospital to reflect on their practices and improve the quality of care provided to patients in the future. Everyone, regardless of their circumstances, deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism. Note: This review is based on my personal experience and may not reflect the overall quality of care provided at this hospital.

Nursing staff are as bright as asphalt. I was told you may be here for 48hrs and try to keep your 2yr Olds arm straight the entire time. Clearly never been around kids. If she thinks a 2yr old will sit still for 2 hrs with their arm straight she is on glue. We were then told by a doctor to bring our oldest child almost 12 in because she witnessed the episode then we are told our child can't leave the room as she could have a virus but it's some how fine to bring a 12 yr old in to the room let her leave and go back to school. If ny child is so contagious she can't leave the room why is it fine for her older sister to come into the room and then leave why can I come and go are we emune to this virus and can't spread it. All in all terrible experience with doctors and nurses on conplely different pages.

This would have been a 5 star review except our last nurse couldn't be bothered to write down the after care instructions for my son's puffer regime. She went over the instructions verbally and I struggled to remember and kept mixing up the colours/doses/etc. I asked for it to be written down and she said it was on the other page. On the page she was referring to it was the doctor's prescription which is not clear to anybody except medical professionals and pharmacists and I am neither. I was a tired mom who just watched her baby struggle to breathe for 2 days. She was also not gentle with my son, had a brusque manner, and burst into his room without knocking. Some nurses have professions that are a calling and some just have jobs. I am very grateful to our first nurses and the doctors on site. Thank you for your care, attention, and time for my boy.

On June 02, 2023 my family doctor sent a CT scan request for my abdomen. I do not have rectum colon and 90% of my pancreas was removed. At the end of August 2023 I called the booking dept. at the hospital. They said they do not know what is going on. They suggested I should bring another CT request directly to the X-ray dept. On Sept 06 2023 I got a copy of the CT scan request from my Doctor and I gave it directly to the X-ray tech, at the Hospital. She said we will call you shortly. Today is Dec 05 2023 I have not received any response about my booking day for a CT scan. I assume I may have a faster autopsy than getting an appointment for my CT scan. I wish I could rate 0 stars.

The nurses here keep their badges inverted so you can't see their names, they treat you like an inconvenience, like how dare you become sick? Treat you like a nuisance. Pregnant women left alone no assessment, no blood work for 7 plus hours, no explanation. No care, no compassion. You don't like it they tell you to sign out and leave I will be writing the mp and government. You can't even treat a sick young mother with any compassion or respect. Shame on you all

I took my 81 year old Mom in today for a pre-op appointment. First we were directed to the wrong floor, although that problem was figured out quite quickly. That was about the only good thing during this visit. Once going through the papers that had been generated during a 10 day stay from the end of October to early November it would seem that it had been noted that my Mom had a heart attack that neither I or my Mother had been told about. So this was going to extend our hospital visit that I had figure would be less than hour, to an outrageous 4 hours with no doctor visit which was the reason for our prolonged waiting room visit!. We waited over 2 hours to see doctors for what, I wasn't sure, with no word from anyone how long it would be. All the while, staff are walking thru the waiting room, ignoring everyone there who are all wondering why very few people sitting here are being called to see anyone. I was so irrate that a asked my Mom, "you wanna go, this is degrading!!" So we left. They called about an hour and a half later saying we'd better come back or they were going to cancel the surgery!!!!! . They can wait for us now. I will be rescheduling tomorrow morning and making a formal, in person complaint for the rude behaviour and threats and lack of health care in a manner suitable for Canadians that are paying such a huge premium for. I was discusted, shame on you for wasting our time, that you obviously have no regard for!!!

The 2.8 rating is 100% accurate! This is a horrible hospital! I'm the POA for my aunt who was hospitalized there & 90% of the nurses & dr. provided low quality health care, were dismissive to my queries & slow to act in finding what her medical condition was to help to prolong her life! From my first visit in the ER with my aunt back in November I knew this hospital wasn't any good! But, being new to the St. Catharine's area I felt like this was my only option. I pray that I NEVER get sick or another one of my loved ones DON'T get sick where they need to be hospitalized BECAUSE I WILL DRIVE ALL THE WAY TO UNIVERSITY ST. in Toronto before I seek treatment from here! DISGUSTINGLY SAD!!!

Honestly has the be one of the worst hospitals in Ontario and now they just use covid as an excuse to cover up their incompetence. They know this "pandemic" is nothing but they'll milk it for all it's worth 8 hr wait times while nurses play on their phones and mess around with co workers. Absolutely disgraceful

I would give a zero if I could. Nurses are overworked and it shows. Zero compassion or empathy. I know they are short staffed but all quality care has left, and in it's place are bitter angry nurses. The doctors actually still care but sadly they are always understaffed, which leaves you with the nurses who give subpar care.

Staff took 1 hour to take my IV out. they took so long even though I mentioned them my IV already was done and took out my blood. They didn’t check up on me and thought I had left already because the doctor discharged me but I was waiting for them to take my IV out so I could leave. Doctor and nurse made unpleasant comments and were gossiping. This is my second time coming to the hospital with the same pain within 3 months and they treat me like this. You’d think they be considerate and mindful of comments they make of patients specially because they work in health care. If you live by Niagara Region, honestly just go to Niagara Falls.

My dad and I came to this hospital when his foot had been hanging on by a piece of skin, gushing blood. It took over 12 hours to get to see a doctor. Another time, I was vomiting blood and they offered me morphine. I was 15 years old, and I had a really bad ulcer. I was able to see a doctor just after 6 hours.

Not sure how the reviews can be so low. Some of the furniture definitely needs refinishing/updating, but my wife recently gave birth there, and the doctors and nurses were over the top helpful and nice. Even the security at the front door grabbed a wheelchair and helped my wife get upstairs while I checked in. I truly can't even express how above and beyond all the staff were. Now just get them a hospital worthy of them!

I came here at 7pm with chest pains, apparently the triage nurse didn't feel I was in any crisis,7 hours later, I still have the pain and there is still 4 other people ahead of me. It is now 2:15 am and I need to be up at 6:am for my work. This is definitely a place I won't be back to

I've been coming here for the pass few years with my daughter and I'll be here up until her release , mom and I will be here every second. This one nurse Sylvia I don't kno if she hates black people but she will not communicate with me at all. If my wife leave the room she will wait until she gets back to share details. I swear am here for help and I feel so horrible being here. If I had one wish is that my daughter never get sick again so I don't have to come back here. They are not heros here sorry. She was just here and ask my wife if she need anything and she didn't even look at me. She is so uptight and rude. I hope she gets replaced. This place is the worse. We need baby doctor in port colbrone and Welland.

Overnight in the ER over Dec. 31/Jan. 1. It was a loony kind of "full moon" night, but staff were all around excellent (that's a whole other essay sent to patient relations). The ER staff are people giving up their holidays to save lives. I am beyond grateful for that and I know many others are. I sincerely hope everyone will give them the respect and gratitude they deserve. They are real, caring, selfless people; not some nameless face not allowed to feel anything since they are "working". *Graphic content warning* it's a bit rude from here on. Sorry about that. We all know how long it takes to get in and now I know why at least partially. Please do not pee on the ER floor, nor abandon the elderly and force the doctor to give up valuable time to call (koodos to the doc for the amazing grace on the phone). The space and time is needed to save lives and treat those in real distress.

Took my 2 year old son in with breathing issues. We went to the walk in clinic first and were sent to the hospital with a doctor’s note to be treated immediately. The lady admitting him refused to read it. Arrived at 3:00 pm and he wasn’t given any puffers until 6:30. Had some amazing nurses who were also shocked that we weren’t treated sooner.

I recently had a biopsy done at the Niagara Health Centre. My appointment was for 0900, and I was advised to be there by 0830 to register. I arrived at 0820 and was in a waiting room by 0830. Someone came and brought me to a change room within 5 minutes. Ten minutes later, I received the biopsy. I changed back into my clothes and was back in my car before 0930. The staff, nurses, and physicians were great.

Hospital is by far the worst in ontario. I have listened to battery low alarms on 3 iv until THE PATIENTS fixed them themselves one nurse walked by and could deal with it because he couldn't find a plug..... like really 😒 Lack of care, empathy and desire to want to work is apparent with every breathe the staff takes in the emergency dept. Except the cleaning staff I will add the emergency room dr we had is great very attentive and caring . The nursing staff .... ..

Waited 7 hours in the waiting room only to have a doctor make me make a self diagnosis. He agreed with my self diagnosis(stomach hernia) and said "thats what it probably is". After speaking to him about an eye issue (in a room with blood on the floor and a broken bed) he didnt even want to talk about it. And wanted me to self diagnose my other issue (stomach). 5 months now with a red eye. The clinic found no stomach hernia after going for an ultrasound. They do not have medical professionals working at this hospital site as you can see from this doctor. Any medical professional would know if someone has a red eye for 5 months it should be treated /dealt with / monitored closely. I reported this incident and i was told i need to report it again to the Ontario college of physicians. If you dont believe me just look at the 2 star overall rating. It is too late for this Hospital and for our city as you can see this hospital abuses many individuals.

Was here due to some stomach issues I was concerned could be pancreatitis, and was given a dose of Zofran and a prescription for home to help with nausea. When I returned home I was informed by my pharmacist that Zofran can interact with a medication I’m on and cause serotonin syndrome. My medications were entered into my chart during Triage. Could have left with a bigger problem than I started with

The actually attitude I just recieved from whoever answered the emerg phone was not helpful whatsoever Extremely rude and super sarcastic….. I understand your a nurse and your under a lot of pressure at times but that does NOT give you a free pass to speak or I should say snap at me like that This is what the health system has come too….. it’s a pay check to most they don’t care about the client or their families HAVE SOME EMPATHY for goodness sake you work in a hospital

Here's the verdict: Last year, I had the same douchey nurse in triage the two times that I'd previously been there. Yesterday, I was admitted for an e-coli UTI and a stomach flu, and the staff have been absolute angels this time around. My faith in this healthcare facility has been restored... And as an added bonus I got these really cute decorative lights, a new phone charger from the child life specialist, those cute grippy hospital socks, an endless supply of cranberry juice, and even a room all to myself.

Worst emergency room I’ve ever been in Ontario. Got here at 10pm and it’s 5am and still no emergency doctor to see patient. How can there be no doctor in a emergency room ? While all the sick patients are waiting in there rooms the nurses all are sitting down with their feet up talking about their relationship advice etc. Never have been more frustrated waiting 7+ hours to not even see a doctor yet.

Been here since Wednesday morning . Spent first 30 hours in emergency where they made me a room with a privacy curtain until my room was ready. These nurses were so busy and never missed a beat. So wonderful with providing the medication I need and when I needed it. Been in my actual room for a full day now and still SO impressed with every single nurse and healthcare worker I’ve been dealing with ( and it’s been a lot ) my parents worked in Hamilton Health Sciences the last 30 years and they are also very impressed how I have been treated . I am glad I ended up in this hospital ! Katelyn Perisic

My mother arrived to emerg by ambulance two months ago. Sadly, I was not allowed to see her for six hours, but I asked a nurse to tell her that I was there. That was a long time for her to be alone, as elderly and ill as she was. Luckily, she was in a back roomed section of emerg. Dr Tim St Amand was the first to diagnose her, and he was very kind and thorough and patient. The next day, my mother was still in the emerg but the nurses were nice and doing the best they could to care for her. Dr Sangha gave an accurate and astounding diagnosis for which I was SO grateful. He was such an expert, so professional, so patient and sincere. I was grateful for a proper diagnosis since my mother had been suffering for a year without knowing why. After 27 hours in emerg, my mother was admitted. The following day, Dr. L. Jensen saw my mother with the same diagnosis as Dr. Sangha. She is also a palliative specialist. Thanks to Dr. Sangha and Dr. Jensen, from then on everything was taken care of for my mother. The palliative and discharge departments were outstanding in working around the clock to get her the palliative / hospice care she needed. After ten days of wonderful care by all staff, we were sent to Shavers. Despite the pressure, stress and gaps in the system, I am so grateful that the staff did their best to offer my late mother so much attention. It took the pressure off me, so that I could be with her in her last days. I admire the diligence of the professionals at emerg, 4th and 5th floor ortho.

Brought my wife in with a massive migraine at ten pm. Six hours and fifteen minutes later we see a doctor. Says he was going to order an IV with some meds to hopefully break the cycle. One hour and fourty minutes later and we are just now getting the IV. Unbelievable!!! What a disappointment this hospital is.

They left my 90 year old father sitting outside sight impairment and hard of hearing . Because they release him before someone could come pick him up. We found him walking down the street . This has to be the worst hospital in the Niagara region. If you can go to any other hospital.

We saw a doctor after a 4.5 hours of wait, then were waiting another 1.5 hours for an x-ray. My kid was so tired and exhausted that I decided to leave without X-ray done at 4 am, so I can give him Tylenol at home and he could have some sleep. Emergency room wasn’t that busy. If I’d knew that I wouldn’t even bother to come there, very disappointed

Very happy with emergency room care. I waited a little to long to bring my daughter in because I was afraid of long wait but as soon as we walked in the nurse at front desk, Isaac, took one look at her at started to help her. He expedited the triage and alerted the doctor to her needs all while still attending to people at front desk of ER. The doctors, nurses, blood work nurse and ultrasound technician all provided prompt and kind treatment. It was obvious they were all extremely busy, they never stopped, the nurses practically running but every interaction we had or that I overheard was kind and professional. I thank them all for their care and feel very reassured that we have good people working in the ER. I think they need more supports so that they don't have to keep that pace up continuously, its not fair to them.

Waited 2 hours last night to see a doctor, the whole process took a few minutes and he ended up diagnosing me with the wrong condition and prescription. I had to follow up with a family doctor to find out what was actually happening to me. I understand if you’re busy with multiple patients but atleast do your due diligence as a doctor, I was quite disappointed by the service from doctor despite how nice the rest of the staff and hospital was. I wasn’t able to identify the doctor as he didn’t bother to introduce himself.

All the expectant mothers out there, you are in the best hands possible at the Niagara Health - St. Catharines Hospital. I'm super impressed with the staff at the Mom and Baby department. To the nurses Niki Ferko and Meghan. B in particular: thank you for the commitment and your compassionate care when I was admitted in the hospital on November 18th, 2021. Niki and Meghan, your dedication and expertise is incredible, you two were my angels in disguise. Right after my operation, I had dedicated nurses for the next 24 hours to monitor progress. I had a Senior RN, Joanne, another Meghan and 3 other nurses but I don't remember their names (my bad). All the nurses were alert, caring, patient and checked on me every 30 minutes. Thanks to Dr. Denise Campeau who was the bearer of the bad news :( who decided my emergency-c who played it safe, which ultimately saved my baby when the fetal heart rate was decelerating. Thanks to Dr. Uthra Mohan for performing the cesarean, within 5 minutes my baby was out and safe. I came to know that the doctors work a 12 hours shift and I really thank you for taking care of us during this pandemic. A sincere thanks to all the nurses and doctors from triage to registration, to my Cesarean, to discharge who cared for me and my baby!

Was there a month ago through the overnight in the waiting room. The housekeeper who was working ( should have got her name as she was amazing ) was helping patients who were waiting with things they needed such as drinks of water , showing the washroom , getting a diabetic woman a small box of cereal and milk , bringing Kleenex to another man all while the 4 nurses were at the desk drinking , eating and talking non work related topics , not busy on the floor. I would give this woman a gold star if I could. Kudos to you ! That hospital needs more of you !!

I had a broken heel bone in my left foot that had been diagnosed as an ankle sprain by my family physician, only because the fracture wasn’t easily visible on a standard X-ray. After 3 weeks I still couldn’t bear any weight on my foot, so my doctor than referred me to the ER. I arrived around 6am and was called within half an hour. After doing more X-rays, the nurse insisted on waiting for an orthopaedic surgeon to give an expert opinion. I had to wait almost 4 hours for him to be available, but it was worth the wait because he ordered a CT scan and was finally able to identify my broken heel. I received a cast and they were so generous as to give me a personal follow up appt. 3 days later with the orthopaedic surgeon to evaluate whether further treatment or surgery may be required. I’m very grateful towards the staff here for the care and compassion they showed me. I really couldn’t ask for anything better than the opinion and knowledge of an orthopaedic surgeon. I trust his diagnosis and I cannot thank him nor all the staff enough for all the help they gave me. Don’t listen to the bad reviews….wait times in the ER are inevitable and they make sure to first give care to those who need it most.

I had to visit the ER yesterday. I was braced for a long wait, stressed out staff, and poor handling of my care. (In my defense, this has been my experience in the past.) What I got instead was a reasonable wait, amazing staff, and an incredible outcome. Considering what you're up against, I'm honestly shocked. I want to thank everyone I interacted with, from the ladies at the front door, the triage nurse, the registration desk staff, the phlebotomist, all the way to the most amazing ER doctor I've ever met. Everyone was so kind and helpful, and I want you all to know how very much I appreciated it. When you visit an ER, you're typically made to feel more like a number than a person. My experience at the General last night was nothing like that. You all made a terrible situation bearable, and the care I received from each of you was absolutely amazing. I just wanted to say thank you. And a special shout out to the ER doctor who went absolutely above and beyond.

I went in via ambulance and needed to stay overnight on IV and heart monitor. The doctors, nurses, and paramedics made sure I was in good health, and were very kind to me. I felt very safe and cared for, which was a first in a while because I live alone. The nurse that did my blood work and IV was amazing, no pain at all. Went in at 7pm and was gone by 11am. It made me sad to see how often the staff here get yelled at. Obviously the emergency room wait time is pretty long but you have to understand they will treat the most urgent patients first.

Just writing my personal experience based on a scheduled procedure in Endoscopy not anything emergency related. It was a nice experience from start to finish. The process was smooth and easy and I was in and out in no more than two hours. The handful of RN's who helped me during the experience were excellent and very kind (Wilma). Especially the RN in the recovery area (Anna) while coming down from the Anesthetic. These people work extremely hard and are on their feet all day. It's a tough, thankless job and they're under staffed. Please try and remember this before giving them a hard time. We're blessed to have free healthcare in this country. Thank you again to the Endoscopy floor team!
