The first Catholic Church at St. Catharines was built to meet the spiritual needs of the Irish labourers who built the first Welland Canal which was opened in 1829. It was a wood structure on the same site as the present cathedral and was called St. John’s because the Anglicans were already using the name St. Catherine for their church in the town of the same name. On November 12 1831 Bishop Alexander Macdonell of Kingston blessed and opened this church, the first Roman Catholic Parish church to be built in the Niagara Peninsula. This first Catholic Church was burned down by an arsonist on August 23 1842. Fortunately the second Welland Canal was being built between 1842-45 and there were once again many Irish labourers in the area who used their free time to build a new parish church, this time of stone as we can see in the structure of the present Cathedral Church. Father Patrick McDonagh laid the cornerstone on Ascension Day May 25 1843 and opened the new church on June 10 1845. The new church was now dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. On November 25 1958 it became the Cathedral Church of the newly formed Diocese of St. Catharines.

My late father and myself would regular this beautiful church, him more so than myself, but we would always go every year, for many years, in memory of my brother, though we had to stop going in 2014 due to him succumbing to Alzheimer's. Father Lizzotti recently performed my fathers funeral service, and it was beautiful, everything from the readings he read to the organist and especially the church choir woman's heavenly voice, all would have made my father so happy. The father even dropped by our house after the service and spent time with the family, this was extremely kind and was something else. I truly will do my best to attend more services. The family is grateful to the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria and to especially know Father Don Lizzotti. Thank you!

I have only been there to ask for food assistance. The setup for this program run by the st. Vincent DePaul and their system is a real timewaster for both the clients and the volunteers! There are 4 people doing the work as 2 people. You have to wait in line for about an hour or so even in really bad weather, and they only stay open until 11:00 am, because they only take 20 people! Don't forget, they are located in the downtown core .

It is wonderful to see the owners of Pioneer Elder Care spearheading another much needed senior's facility (Chapel Heights). I have heard many people refer to Pioneer Elder Care as, "The Best". Chapel Heights is sure to be the same. Heads above the rest. This team always delivers. They bring excellence in comfort and support, to the people they serve. With inovative ideas and a deep sense of what people need to feel good, in a wholistic sense. Their homes are beautifully, stylish yet incredibly clean. The staff is always genuinely caring and professional. I have witnessed these things first hand. I have seen the happiness they bring to the families they help. Bravo for seeing and meeting the needs of seniors once again. You always go above and beyond. This is wonderful to see, especially at this difficult time. You continue to keep seniors safe and their families reassured now and always.
