We love a good roast! We were recommended via Facebook to try this place by several people. It’s a traditional English pub… decor a bit dated but it has a nice feel and lovely service. I ordered the pork and everything was exactly what I wanted… lots of gravy, good veg and well cooked with apple sauce. My girlfriend ordered beef which was a bit over cooked for are liking but still nice nonetheless… I’d recommend the pork. We haven’t tried the chicken.

We booked for a family meal, and the service and food was top class. A fantastic friendly service, with staff who couldn't do enough for you, and who had a great sense of humour. We often go out for meals to recommended places, and The Masons Arms is the best that we have been to for years. We think that tourists to York should know about this place and go there - it's just 5-10 minutes walk outside the city walls but not in 'the tourist boundary'; not sure how the proprietors can promote this, but hopefully this review can be of some help

We are visiting from the Glasgow area and thought we'd stop in for dinner as we were staying in a hotel nearby. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered the Fish and Chips and the Sheppard's Pie. The fish had the most wonderful batter - the perfect balance of crispy without being dry, and the chips were fluffy with a slight sweetness to them which made them impossible to resist. The lamb in the Sheppard's Pie was probably the nicest lamb mince I've ever had. It was tender and perfectly seasoned. I'd happily return on future visits to York

A proper English "pub". Stuff on high shelves and hanging from the ceiling. A proper fireplace. Wood panelling aplenty. Even the pipes in the gents toilets were polished. You know, like pubs should be. Staff were friendly and easy to talk to. It's even dog friendly. The food was absolutely first rate. Proper portions of very tasty food. Not pretentious, no ceremony, just a proper feed at a cracking price. I don't drink so I can't comment on the beers but I didn't see anyone complaining and it, again, looked like a pub who knew how to keep its ales just right. We'll definitely be back next time we're in York. I've bookmarked them on Google Maps.

Discovered by accident on a weekend away in York. They are the Sunday Lunch Kings. Super service, very friendly, and serving traditional lunch with an astoundingly good Yorkshire pudding and beautifully cooked vegetables. The icing on the carrot: they don't follow the latest trend of putting a whole root on a plate or mushing them to a pulp: they still chop their carrots up the good, old fashioned way. Excellent venue.

We came here 10 mins before they finished food service, but thankfully, they found us a table and gave us a menu asking us if we would choose quickly. We chose a steak and also the pie of the day. The meals came out and they were wonderful, the pie was a huge wedge and deep filled, the steak was cooked perfectly. Lovely food and very attentive staff made a great evening in a lovely atmosphere. Would highly recommend.

Great food in a nice friendly welcoming pub in the city centre. Parking available. Super friendly staff and dog friendly too. Food portions are immense and we had a really enjoyable evening away from the hustle and bustle of York bars and nightlife but still in walking distance

Nice pub with friendly, welcoming staff and relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately, there was a mix- up with my vegetarian pasta (it had chicken in it), so l ended up not eating there. Staff were genuinely apologetic and didn't charge us for my partner's meal or the 2 drinks we had. Would go back if l was ever in York again, but wouldn't risk eating there.

stopped off for lunch at Masons Arms, just across the road from the city walls. Very friendly welcome from the staff, excellent pint of ale from the pull pump and superb food in a great old style pub. Cottage pie for my wife was very good, but the ox cheek with mash and gravy off the specials board was awesome. I was full well before the end but finished it anyway as it was so good. would love to return if I lived closer. - Highly Recommended

Reasonable for a quick drink if you're in the area. Miss the food though - we had the chicken wings and some were cold in the middle. The turkey roast was very basic, the only good bit was the yorkshire pudding which was appropriately great. Staff generally very friendly and lovely except one waitress who was not.

We eat here every couple of months. Whilst the food is always good quality and provided in large portions (I wouldn’t bother with a starter) it is the friendliness of the staff that is the stand out feature. We at the pub last night before a Barbican concert and it was rammed but the welcome and service provided to everyone was first class.

Favourite pub in York. Friendly staff, proper pub and great food. Had the Mason burger the wife Shepard's pie, so full can't manage a sweet. Jealous as just seen the missus potion of apple pie and custard. Well worth a visit

Had a very tasty pub grub dinner on the garden terrace. Very pleasant and attentive staff, swift service and very reasonable prices for pie & chips / sausage/mash. Bit loud with a group of after-work expletive uttering drinkers sitting close-by but not much the pub staff can do about that. Would return again and recommend. Thanks very much.

My wife and myself visiting York, found this pub by chance, we was only going to pop in for a pint. When we stepped inside we were so impressed by the pleasant greeting from the staff. We saw the food specials board and decided to stay for food. I chose beef cheek and my wife chose the lamb shank along with starters of lamb kofta for me and pate for my wife. I then chose lemon cheesecake with cream. The food was amazing, the beer was very good. But I must conclude on mentioning the staff. They were so helpful. A young lady on the staff was so knowledgeable on the history of the pub, right down to the old fire place, which was once had a place in an old York prison. Anyway we enjoyed it so much we booked a meal the evening after. Will we call again if staying in York? Oh yes, a proper pub, with proper food and fantastic staff. Well done.

Great bar with even better food. Called in for a drink as we were passing decided to eat there that night. The food was absolutely fabulous couldn't fault it. Then decided to have Sunday lunch which was even better. To add to the experience all the bar staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We didn't stay overnight so can't comment on accommodation

Great pub with fabulous food, short walk outside York City centre. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Varied menu with plentiful options for those with dietary preferences especially gluten free. Would highly recommend.

Fabulous Sunday lunch. Huge Yorkshire pudding, and a nice variety of veg and potatoes. Generous portion of meat. We did the 2 course deal which meant pudding was only £3. All in all, good food, good service and good value. Would definitely go back.

Didn't have food or stay over but popped in here as we were staying at a nearby hotel. Girl who served us was lovely. We sat outside next to the lock which was beautiful and peaceful. Beer garden is quaint and cosy. Inside the pub is quirky and clean but there were no customers in other than my husband and I.

We stayed here for one night in room one and it was superb!! Really clean and tidy and everything we needed. The staff were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much. We will definitely be back again and thank you to the man who works there that was really helpful with our parking in the morning.

Gorgeous beer garden out the back overlooking the river. All the blooms were out, a riot of colour, they certainly have a good gardener 😁 it was so lovely to see all the beautiful flowers!

We went for some food after arriving in York. It was well recommended on Google so we thought we'd give it a try. Plus they are dog friendly, which was an absolute must for us. Staff were great, there was a roaring fire and it looked very festive. I had the steak and potato, and it was incredible. I don't think I've had a pie so big! Very tasty.

Food was great, service was great, and the portions were huge, we barely finished our food. The prices were also very decent considering how big the portions were. The pub has overall had a very cozy feel too!

Just a fantastic traditional pub! We went for Sunday dinner. The staff were so welcoming and friendly, not to mention, they never stopped the whole time we were there. The food was absolutely top quality! After having a few weekends in York and visiting a quite a few pubs in the town, this is our favourite by far! Thanks again and see you again soon!

We had a lovely few drinks here and were served by the incredibly friendly Daphne who was always on hand to fetch us more drinks with a smile. Lovely venue full of interesting pictures from the past. They seemed to serve some lovely meals from what we could see coming our from the kitchen. The place was busy but it was never too loud and we had an enjoyable evening chatting away before our comedy gig at the venue just round the corner. Thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Great Sunday roast. One of the few left in the city that provide a real value for money. Roast priced at £13.5 which is a real bargain, and you can upgrade to 2 and 3 courses if you want to add starters or desserts. The Yorkshire pudding is star of the show, and easily the tastiest I’ve had in town! Will absolutely be back.

So impressed! The staff were great. Very welcoming as soon as we came through the door. We all ordered the Sunday roast. It was fresh, hot and well presented. Very generous portions but I managed to clear my plate. Shared a cheesecake which was the real McCoy not a fluffy imposter. Really can't fault you at all. Honey my dog was also made very welcome with treats and water. 10/10. Would definitely recommend

We recently stopped at The Masons Arms and it was great! The staff were incredibly friendly and happy to answer any questions, the room was a good size, clean and had plenty of provisions. The location is great, and I would happily stop there again for an overnight trip to York

A short walk from our hotel. This place can get busy and you may need to book. Nice clean pub, friendly staff. Plenty of choice of drinks. We ordered off the specials board and both had pan fried sea bass. Well it was absolutely tickety boo! I had a mini cheese board for one afterwards and quite frankly there was plenty on there to share. This was a really good Pub meal - fairly priced and worth the money. So give it a go !

Nice oldie place, loads of staff so served very quick. Beer tastes fresh and crisp. Worth a visit. There is a beer garden out the back but didn't have time to look at it.

Absolutely fantastic food every time I eat here! The beef skewers are to die for! The next dish on my list is the pie of the day, homemade and looks scrumptious

Excellent proper pub in York. We called in early evening as a party of six with no booking but they managed to squeeze us in. Very friendly and helpful staff (nut allergy in the group was catered for) and food arrived very quickly. Lovely homemade food from the burger to the curry, all enjoyed by all. Just a shame our appetites weren't up to the portion sizes as it was so yummy! Would recommend anyone looking for a proper pub atmosphere with delicious home made food.

Visited here on a recommendation and I wasn't disappointed. The fish and chips was absolutely superb. Perfectly cooked fish and home made hand cut chips. The pub itself was a good traditional English pub. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Also, the background music was great too.

Just popped in on the off chance. Luckily due to cancellation we were shown to a table and they are dog friendly. The service was excellent and friendly. The food was amazing with a Verity of meals chosen with dessert for £15. The food was hot on arrival. Table cleared within a good time. Good selection of ales. Lovely little find. I would certainly recommend.

A proper old style English pub. we called here whilst looking for somewhere to eat. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food and drink was excellent. Massive portions and very good quality would definitely comeback again. Would have loved to stayed and sampled the beer but unfortunately was driving.

We booked a table for 10 ageing golfers on a trip to York. Close to the hotel the Masons Arms was perfect after our days golf. Food choice was extensive offering well priced traditional meals. Service was very friendly and attentive. Plenty of clean plates and empty glasses.....

Went into The Masons Arms when in York for a weekend away as we were staying in an apartment round the corner. Fantastic pub with amazing staff, we were made to feel extremely welcome. Food was equally fabulous, partner had a great burger while I opted for pie of the day, that days being steak and potato - well it was so full of meat I think I only found 3 or 4 pieces in the huge wedge of pie on my plate. To top it all off a great selection of well kept beer. Next time we're in York we'll definitely be back!

We recently stayed at this pub for a two nights during a sightseeing trip to York. Our room was basic but perfectly reasonable for a short stay. An advantage of using the accommodation is the availability of free parking in the rear secure yard. The pub facilities were fantastic with friendly staff and a good selection of beers and spirits. We ate there on both nights and both meals were delicious. Good choices from the main menu with an additional specials notice board. Second night was very busy and it was a good job that we had booked a table. All around looked to be enjoying their food and the busy atmosphere shows the pub has a good reputation. Very pleasant visit and we would highly recommend this place.

We went for dinner on Sunday and it was amazing. We had the Sunday roast and my daughter had fish and chips. The food was lovely. Only small thing was it had a lot of gravy on the plate. Would have preferred it to come in a pot on side . The food tasted amazing tho and a lot of it. Service was amazing and staff super nice. We sat outside as they have done the seating area up and it was lovely. Lots of seating and can imagine. It look amazing at night with all the lights. Would recommend this place to anyone as was a really nice place.

Really wonderful service, friendly & accomodating. We had the Sunday lunch which was great (and massive!). The stuffing was a real highlight, and the chicken was great too, very tender. The Yorkshire puddings were immense, and delicious. The quality and quantity for the price was fantastic value.

Absolutely amazing food here. If you are hungry have the steak and potato pie and beef cheeks. So filling and well presented. Definitely not short on portion size. If anyone if going to York make sure to go there. I’ll definitely be going back.

Charming classic pub with a warm atmosphere. Food was good and reasonably priced. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Had a bitters and it was good. Interestingly, despite all the warnings about the British serving beer at room temperature, all beers I have had in this country were quite cold. I guess room temperature in Britain is about 40F. Overall a good value dining option.
