The only way to describe this hotel is: worn down! Even if the front building is very old and quite pretty the actual hotel is in a bad bad shape! The room was filthy, fitted carpets that feels like a bio hazard! Bathroom was reasonably clean but old and worn. Cracked enamel and brown grimy cracks in the floor. Staff was friendly but couldn’t really manage. Usually the hotel, bar, restaurant and reception was manned with ONE person running between station. The restaurant functions as an Indian restaurant sometimes and then it’s a really good place to eat. Outside those times- not so much. Food was pretty bad. Picture shows a “medium rare” “steak”. Only “plus” side is the price.

First off all the staff are all so lovely here, they were superb! The pub was a little smaller than we expected but the locals were all friendly enough and the bar staff was very relaxed and chatty. We didn't get the chance to eat in the restaurant due to travel constraints but it smelled lovely. The rooms are a little dated but they were comfortable and cool. The water runs fast and hot so the bath fills really quickly. The room, and the rest of the place, was all very tidy and only a little dust on the carved features of the desk and side table. We would certainly stay there again if we are in the area. 9/10

Rooms are very dated. Staff are very friendly, rooms are standard with TV. Our room was very dusty all over bed and picture frames ect, food in the reasaruant was good and drinks are decent prices, gardens are unkempt and overgrown. Not a lot of parking. No bedside plug sockets.

Old fashioned pub with a good number of rooms. Ideal for a overnight stay for business or a local get together. Staff very friendly and helpful, supplied recommended taxi and multiple other numbers if busy. Food and restaurant was excellent for a evening meal. Room had the normal facilities, was clean and tidy, very strong scented spray used, carpets and curtains dated and needed cleaning, bathroom needed a little maintenance around shower and the floor was super slippery and almost dangerous. Only a short walk to the roaring Meg retail park.

Really really nice curry house. The dinner is lovely. The bar is nice and well stocked. Much nicer than the curry houses of the old town, as here it's about flavour over heat heat heat.

Went for a curry and it didn’t disappoint, lots of variety on the menu, food was delicious. I find it can veer to the hot side but if you ask for it mild they are very accommodating. All in all a fantastic place to have a curry

Very disappointing - very dated, stained carpets in bedroom, tiles falling off walls in bathroom. Needed to ask for thick cobwebs to be cleared away from the upper window incline. Could not see out of bedroom window due to very overgrown/thick bramble. This beautiful little pub has been badly neglected.

We stayed at the Roebuck when visiting family in Stevenage. The staff is fantastic, from reception to bar to restaurant, nothing was too much trouble and our needs were anticipated ahead of any requests we made. They really could not do enough for us. The Roebuck is a hotel of two halves, the 15th Century original building which houses the reception, bar and restaurant and the hotel rooms in an adjoining annexe. The food was fantastic, the restaurant has an English and an Indian menu. The first night we ate from the English menu which was great and the second night we had one of the best Indian meals EVER and believe me we have had A LOT of Indian food over the years. There were some very exotic dishes on the menu that we'd never heard of which were absolutely delicious. I can recommend the Bhel Puri starter for example. As other reviewers have stated, parts of the hotel annexe could do with some updating but our room was lovely, pleasant decor, comfy beds, coffees/teas/milk/biscuits in large amounts and frequently replenished, generous sized fluffy towels. Some of the reviews say the hotel's prices are not competitive but then again you can't put a price on generosity, friendliness and kindness, they are in short supply but the Roebuck Inn has more than enough to go around. Would definitely recommend.

The Roebuck does what it says on the tin...budget hotel with good transport links. Its a little dated (no bad thing tho) but always clean and tidy. Has a decent pub atrached. Main reason I come back is the price of course, but the lovely Indian family that run the hotel and pub, always super friendly and polite...oh, and they also run an Indian food service, which is absolutely top notch food...has to be sampled

Booked a room last minute. Location of the hotel is perfect. Right next to a supermarket and in a quiet area. Called reception before booking as we were bringing a baby and wanted to ensure the room was on ground floor. We were advised that the room we were staying in the heating wasn’t working. The maintenance at the hotel supplied plug in heaters and pre heated the room for us before our stay as it was cold outside. Very clean and comfy room. Both me and my partner thoroughly enjoyed the nights stay. Very homely hotel. Will definitely stay again :)

Stayed on business for 1 night (thankfully). Outer building is nice and rustic. I was greeted at the reception by a lovely lady, who was welcoming and friendly and helped with enquiries but this is where the enjoyable experience ends as soon as I got into the room I realised this would not be a great stay. Dingy room, old decor that hasn’t been maintained. Limescale on shower and kettle. Room hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned in months. Radiator constantly clanging all night. Wifi was horrendous, kept cutting in and out. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. Can’t speak on the food as did not eat there.

We had a lovely stay in the Roebuck Inn. They were also kind enough to let us check in early, as we were on our way to a wedding. Very kind staff. Highly recommend!

Rooms comfortable, service excellent and the best Indian meal we have had in a long time. The hotel was the venue for three of my family weddings in the seventies and eighties when it was one of thee places to go but times have changed and now The Roebuck is in private hands. Look beyond the refurb required and here is a a great little hotel. Free parking and lots of character Throughly recommend

Pleasently surprised. Although the Roebuck is very old and quite quaint in parts. It hasn't changed much since I was last there over 50 years ago. Rooms are spacious, bed very comfy. Could do with a bit of a Spruch up but on the whole very reasonable and a good night's sleep. Very friendly welcome.

A lovely old hotel with a friendly welcome and nice staff throughout. The attached bar was clean and welcoming. The attached indian restaurant was fantastic, some of the best food we have had in years. Everything you need under one roof. The hotel rooms are large and clean with comfortable beds but could maybe do with some modernisation. A perfectly located hotel for people attending events at Coltsfoot Country Retreat

What a great little find. I needed a reasonable priced hotel whilst working at Sign of the Times music festival. I stayed in a single room at the back of the hotel and it was nice and quiet. Comfy bed, nice and clean room with loads of nice touches that takes it up a few notches from being basic. Staff were amazingly helpful and friendly, I was looked after over and above many five star hotels I stay at. Okay the decor could do with a spruce up, but overall this is a great place to stay. I have to leave a night early, almost sad to be leaving 😝

We quite liked it here although it is getting a little tired as others have said. They had no hot water but did give us a £20 discount on the room. The receptionist/barmaid/general everything was very very pleasant and helpful. The bar was cosy and did have one decent cask ale on offer. Ideally situated for the Lamex stadium.

Was here for a friend's birthday party in the function room. Beautiful historic building with oak beams and olde worlde feel about it. Had lovely atmosphere in the bar, very friendly and welcoming. Food at function was very good, various Currys etc. Didn't stay over as wasn't told this was also a hotel, but staff couldn't have done more and gave access to one of the rooms for use of bathroom to an elderly disabled guest. Obviously with this building being so old they were limited to just how much they could do for disabled guests access but we managed and they couldn't have been more helpfull

Hotel room was clean but dated and shower didn't work. But staff were polite and the bed was comfortable. However the Indian restaurant connected was excellent 10/10 highly recommend to any one staying or local.

Excellent value for money, wonderful staff and wonderful food. Our room was standard, clean sheets and towels, a nice selection of teas and coffees and had a decent TV and channel selection. Our room was quiet and cool. We dined in the Indian restaurant in the evening and the food was superb - we had some leftovers so they were even kind enough to pop in their fridge until we left in the morning (no fridge in our room). Would stay here again!
