The Edinburgh Museum is a hidden gem in the heart of the city. I had the pleasure of visiting recently and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the exhibits and the overall experience. The museum's layout is well thought out, allowing for easy navigation and exploration. The collection is diverse and covers a wide range of topics, providing a comprehensive view of Edinburgh's history.

Lovely museum . I personally thought that there was a lot to see and it was very interesting . I was pleasantly surprised that it was free . The staff was very kind and helpful . The building inside and out was beautiful and despite the buzyness of the street it was very quiet inside which I truly appreciated . The outside exhibit in the garden was also a very beautiful touch .

Free entrance but do donate when you get out and buy from the shop. A good number of collections from the different eras of Edinburgh.

Diverse free museum providing not only the history of Edinburgh but is filled with decorative art with history about Edinburgh's silver and glass industry. One has a chance to walk through the 16th century house through a maze of corridors

Not bad but good job it’s a free museum. Super squeaky floor everywhere, some collections not much interesting, loads of different vessels, dishes etc. I wish they talked more about the actual city and places in it. Instead of mostly people and bits and bobs. Could make it all so much more interesting too. But I guess worth stepping in if you’re going past.

Well worth a look if you want to find out about the history of Edinburgh. We stumbled upon the Museum whilst walking up the Royal Mile and very glad we did. The Museum has so much to see in it and goes into a lot of detail of the history of Edinburgh. George, one of the museum attendants, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and the pieces on display. There is so much to see we are going to make a second trip back (at least!) to see the rest of the pieces there.

Disappointing. No way you can learn the city history from this little randomly arranged exhibits, however many of them are very beautiful (some silver, glass and potery peaces). I believed the city museum should answer the question how the city was found, how people have lived here though all 600 years, what they have been doing, producing, eating, entertaining? How the population has grown? When was electricity first used or when were first baths and toilets installed in houses. How many schools were here before and now? What they study at schools 300/200/100 years ago? When first supermarkets did appear? How the city lives now? What are main industries/trades here? Who are they modern Edinburgh citizens? You will NOT find any answer in the museum.

WAY BETTER THAN EXPECTED! And it just keeps going and going and going! They did a great job of providing activities for kids.

Small museum housed in an old building with creaky floors. Displays are over several floors. We spent less than an hour there. Enjoyable.

It's a free museum to enter and is deceptively large inside. It has a large variety of exhibits. Including the original architectural plans of modern Edinburgh that can be viewed. Also, Field Marshall Haig's family donated his war memorabilia. It's well worth a visit.

Museum is pretty small but it has its own vibe. The entry is free, you can give a donation later. A lot of nice expositions, we can get to know Edinburgh history. The staff was friendly and open to help. All trip through the museum takes no more than 1,5 hour.

Free entrance! I definitely recommend the museum to all who want to explore explicitely the history of the city more. It is much larger than it looks like from the outside and contains details on Canongate but also the whole of Edinburgh. Also more details on Bobby including his collar can be found in the museum. The yard with additional objects is not open in winter

What a great free museum in the heart of Edinburgh! I loved learning about the city and seeing all the relics from the past to present. Truly recommend this place if you want to learn more about the city.

Great start for visitors to learn about this amazing historic city. Details on so many aspects of the people, culture and history. Excellent displays of a beautiful diversity of highly crafted items. And it’s FREE

Well worth a look around. It’s a great little museum with tons of different things to see. It has a lot of information about Edinburgh and the history of it. Friendly staff and a cute little gift shop at the end. It’s free entry and a great way to spend an hour to so, especially on a rainy day.

Great experience at the museum. We were able to store our pram at reception. Cool little museum and not too crowded! Higly recommend stopping by if you're around the area. We made sure to take pics at the back of the Museum through Bakehouse close.

You will not regret the time spent exploring this museum. It's like a Tardis, with more to see around every corner and up every staircase. A big thank you to the staff, who are charming and helpful. Don't miss this on your visit to Edinburgh.

Loads to see walking from the castle down the Royal mile to Holyroodhouse. Lovely city well named the Athens of the North

First of all, it’s free! Secondly it is right on the Royal Mile. And this little gem is filled with history and artifacts. I went midday in early September and there was no big crowd which was lovely. There is a quality gift store on your way out and a place to make a donation. Enjoy!

Wow another great place to add to your list of places to visit in Edingburgh. The history of the formation of the city laid out. With lots for children to do. You will definitely come away with knowing more than when you went in. Great place

Great museum with a lot of information about the history of the city. Worth a visit when you go see Edinburgh. If you are an outlander fan, you should go see the close next to the museum.

I was not very impressed by the collection. I guess it showed pretty well how the life must have been in the old days of Edinburgh and what kind of possessions they people must have had. But I need more sign to tell me what I was looking at. Very charming old house though and it was free to enter so I guess that's good.

We couldn't get inside because there were no tickets online and on site. He's handsome out there. I recommend buying tickets much earlier.

Charming little museum that's free tl visit. Don't be fooled by its facade, it's so much bigger inside. Small collection on Greyfriars Bobby too!

Thr museum is opposite to the People's Story Museum, and a few minutes' walk from the Childhood Museum. All of them are FREE. You should visit all in one go. The historic building houses the museum is called Huntly House which was built or remodelled in 1570. I learned a lot about Edinburgh's facinating history from reading the stories about the displayed objects. The story of Greyfriars Bobby brought me to tears.

Loved this seemingly little museum, but the items on display seem to never end, and that is a good thing! Make sure to visit this museum when in Edinburgh, put it on your to do list and you won't regret it.
