Great food and vibe. It was nice/fancy. We weren’t dressed that nicely but it was fine. They have a lot of Swedish items for an authentic experience. We went towards the end of the night and got lucky because they hadn’t closed the kitchen yet. Would go back again if I end up in the area. I’m gluten free and dairy free and there weren’t many options. I still found something, though. The soup was delicious.

Came here on the weekend for fika and was served the driest carrot cake that I have ever tasted. The cake crumbles immediately as one sinks ones fork into the cake. Feels like I have been served a cake that is a week old. Either that or I was served a carrot cake flavoured cookie / biscuit.

Very cute place within a small crossing in the middle of Gamla Stan (below a Chestnut tree, hence the name). The food was absolutely great, although it could have been a bit more and it isn't exactly cheap (as in 99% of restaurants in Stockholm centrum). 6 Stars for service, the two ladies are absolutely lovely, super friendly, cared for their guests and always polite and with a smile.

Good efficient service and very friendly. Food was excellent, very tasty. Great atmosphere, a good place to chat with friends (no loud music). I had meat balls with mash which was really flavourful. Our friends had the fish stew and said how satisfying it was, it was served up with bread which was great to mop up the beautifully tasty sauce. The cost for each couple was 715 SEK so this was for 2 main courses and an alcoholic drink each. This is approx £61 (dependent on exchange rate). This is about average pricing in this area.

Awesome Swedish food! They have a separated area in the kitchen to bake and prepare gluten free meals, so it’s safe for #celiac. You just need to inform the staff about your restrictions and they would be really careful.

Gluten Free Review: This was a central spot in Gamla Stan. When I asked the server for gluten free options, she confirmed that most of the items can be made gluten free. I ordered the Swedish meatballs & a slice of carrot cake. The food was brought out very quickly. The meatballs were great, the carrot cake was a little dry but still good. I would recommend eating here for fika or a quick lunch spot.

Under a Chestnut..literally under a big chestnut tree in a tiny “well kept secret piazzetta” in the middle of Gamla Stan. So good Scandinavian seafood and tasty chocolate desserts on the table will d’élite your days. The proverbial Stockholm kindness gives a twist. Must try👑🇸🇪

I have been three times in the restaurant. I tasted the salmon salad and the meat balls. Everything very tasty and good quantity. In fact, i repeated the meat balls. They have a variety of delicious desserts and gluten free. The restaurant is nice and is in a very nice area in the old town. The waiters very diligent and specially tonight very nice. I just can say one think: 5 stars.

In the heart of old city you can get Swedish specialities so sandwiches and /or fika all home made ? (Careful they will not let you sit and work on your laptop during certain hours :) )

Ordered the meatball which was delicious, especially the sauce. Curry rice also not bad. Great location and reasonably priced dishes. Would recommend!

We were around ten eating at the place. Service was good and fast and the place was quite nice and clean but I wouldn't call it cosy. The dishes were tasty enough. But I'll turn off two stars for the inconvenient website where we were choosing our food in advance (for the dinner-menu) but in reality a lot of them were not presented. My mushroom mini-soup was not with truffle-crisps as in the menu but with ordinary tasteless chips. For the quality of the place and food and dishes variety this restaurant is overpriced. Not a family friendly choice. The place is called "under the chestnut" but there were no dishes with any chestnut presented (on the website only). Unfortunately I don't see any reason to turn back to this place again.

One of the most beautiful places to eat in town. Located in a kind of secluded small square under a chestnut (which is the meaning of the restaurant's name), the views and atmosphere are amazing. Food is also quite nice and interesting, especially the mushrooms soup and the chavre chaud dish.mushrooms soup and the chavre chaud dish. Lovely! ♥️

Wanted to get some authentic Swedish meatballs with the fixings and this place delivered the goods! Plenty of items on the menu to choose from. The location is fantastic, the service great, and the prices reasonable. Give this a shot and avoid the crowds at the main square.

In my weekend in Stockholm the first restaurant where I did it was precisely Under Kastanjen, suggested on my travel guide. I went there with my friend for dinner after we booked a table just a couple of hours before. The restaurant take is name from a tree who you can find just in front of it. The place is comfy, clean, with good furniture, the light are not too strong. We did choose this restaurant to try some traditional food, so what more traditional that the swedish meatball? That's what I ordered. The plate was good but not exceptional. To tell the truth I was expecting something more, but even so I think is a good place and worth to try. The staff is very good, professional, kind and fast to take the order and to bring the plates to your table.

Good atmosphere and service. They do have gluten free options but unfortunately none burger or grilled sandwich. Still if you are celiac you can have a salad or traditional meatballs which are delicious. Prices are a little high, I guess it’s because we are in Sweden 😅 PS: The toilet was quite dirty !!

Super cute vibe, great location in Gamla Stan, lovely menu on offer (can never go wrong with cinnamon roll and the meatballs with a Pilsner), nice prices, and very friendly staff. Visited on Sunday, just before noon, had no issue snagging a table and enjoying a leisurely brunch

Really delicious gluten free meatballs with mashed potatoes and cranberry, but a bit expensive. 35 € for 1 plate of meatballs, 1 big portion of fries and 2 pepsi. Service could improve but overall we are satisfied.

They have great breakfast deals and the ambiance can’t be beat! My husband had the yogurt & muesli, a ham & cheese sandwich, and a choice of coffee or tea. I had the ham and cheese sandwich and coffee. Total cost: $17.18 US dollars. Everything was fresh and delicious! The inside is very cozy feeling. We chose to sit outside to eat and watch the world go by. It is a lovely setting with plenty of tables and chairs shaded by a Chestnut tree…thus the name. If you’re looking for a place to be served, this would not be the place for you. You order at the counter and your items are fixed and placed on a tray which you then take to where you want to sit. The coffee is also self serve and the refills are unlimited. The person who took our order was friendly and gracious to us (Americans who know only one word of Swedish). We are going for breakfast again this morning!

Super süßer Ort um Köttbullar zu Essen. Das Gericht war ein Gedicht und alles in allem auch die Bedienungen sehr sehr freundlich. Absolut zu empfehlen!

Nice restaurant with swedish dishes and vegetarian options. Service was very nice, kitchen was (almost too) quick. Maybe a bit over priced.

Prices are pretty high for what you get in comparison to other much better restaurants in the area with same price. First of all it is kind of a self-service restaurant, you order at the counter, make your own tea, set your table with fork and knive. The interior is just basic, nothing special. I had very high expectations from the seafood stew, but I was disappointed in it, barely finished it, maybe it is just not smth of my taste since many people said good things about it. Anyway, there are better restaurants out there...for same price.

Wonderful service and cozy café. I had the days special, salmon with potatoes in white wine sauce, it was delicious and I plan on replicating it the best I can when I get home. Can't wait to dine here again.

Good food. Had the meatballs with mashed potato and it was delicious!! My friend had the seafood stew and enjoyed it also although her portion was tiny. Prices reasonable and member of staff friendly.

Disappointing food. A few cold meat balls with a small side dish. If you want to eat good Köttbullar, eat somewhere else.

Nice location in Old Town. A bit neutral interior and medium size menu. Very well cooked dishes. It seems they also are a lunch and coffee place depending on the time of day.

Good "ikea" meatballs but the big surprise was the goat cheese salad. Covered in some sort of caramelised sugar and honey it was simply amazing!

Cute place in gamla Stan. They had the outside seating which would be a nice setup in Summers. Winters was cozy inside and they have basement too. Mushroom soup was really good. Otherwise a decent place. Not spectacular/extraordinary

Amazing Swedish lunch special with freshly baked bread….delicious!!

The meatballs and the vegan hamburger were good and the price, given the dishes themselves and the location, was fair. The ambience is nice and cozy and there are blankets that you can use outside. And it's great that you can have the bistro meals outside of regular eating hours - very useful when walking around in Stockholm. However, I was quite disappointed with the gluten-free mazarin. I'm a big fan of Swedish food and treats, and I know what a real mazarin is - unfortunately this one was dry and lacking the mandelmassa taste. There is a little room for improvement. But I'd visit again!

Our first meal since we arrived mid afternoon. Lovely outdoor seating (under the beautiful chestnut tree, hence the restaurant's name). The staff were friendly and the order came out fast. My wife enjoyed the Swedish Meatballs dish and I liked my Seafood Stew (had to ask for bread). The Three Town lager was refreshing! We'd come back before we leave town.

6 star location, especially if you get a seat outside it is the cutest street I've seen in Stockholm so far. Prices are reasonable, 12-25 USD. Meatballs were tasty, but came out room temperature. Ham and cheese was also good, very creamy cheese but otherwise nothing to write home about. Unless you're writing home from a military deployment in which case it was probably the best part of your trip.

One of the best place in Gamla Stan for breakfast and fika. We went every morning. The owner is very polite and kind.

We had drinks outside. Very nice atmosphere. Wish they had a bigger variety of non alcoholic beverages, like alcohol free cocktails or homemade lemonades.

Good place to grab something to eat. A cafe in the afternoon and a dinner place by evening. I tried the vegan burger, which was nice. The burger bun could have been better. Fries and coffee were good. Plenty of places to sit inside. Would recommend to sit downstairs or in the main cafe. The room on the left side to the entrance is a bit cold.
