For a start, it's FREE! This is a great option for visitors to Stockholm and residents, particularly in the current day and age of high costs of living. Friendly staff at reception, who are very helpful, is a second positive. The museum has lots on offer, in terms of history of the city over the past few hundred years. Very well illustrated with displays and not overwhelming with text. Perfect for the end of the day (bonus is that it's open till 8pm on a Tuesday).

Really good museum to learn more about Stockholm’s history. Admission is free but they are closed on Mondays. Located in a very convenient location next to Slussen train station. I thought the exhibition divides the time period well and there are English signs on most of the exhibits. Unfortunately audio guide seems to be only in Swedish. My most favourite part is the exhibition around the building history of the City Hall. There are many old pictures with detailed explanation in English and Swedish. This was presented through a screen where you can take your time to view each image. As with all museums in Stockholm, portable chairs are available so you can take your time! Lastly I also think they have the best gift shop out of all the museums. Many interesting post cards and merchandise

Perfect place to learn more about Stockholm, there are 3 floors of exhibition. One of the coolest parts is that there’s a tiny apartment where a working-class family used to live in the 1900s. Although the circulation could be a bit confusing, you won’t get lost.

Free and interesting museum. The layout is a bit chaotic and no directions around the museum but it is interesting and recomendable to anyone who wants to learn more about Swedish and Stockholm culture.

Free admission all days except Mondays.. Toilets in all the floors.. Affordable Cafe and gift section.. Right outside Slussen Metro/T-Bana station.. Facilities include Cloak room with locker and place to keep your Umbrellas.. There's also a Research Library about the history of Stockholm city mostly in Swedish but in some parts English..

First of all it’s Free to visit. Secondly you can’t get better historical tour than city museum offers. If you’re going to Stockholm before taking any guided tour visit this museum so when they tell you stories you make connections.

The Stockholm Exhibition is incredibly beautiful and thoughtfully put together, one can really get lost in it. It doesn't hurt that the admission is free as well :) If you find yourself to the south of the central island of Stockholm definitely pay this museum a visit!

Nice Museum! Liked how they had it in date order as you go up the floors. Very informative and interesting. I liked the part about Ulla Winlad and her story. Plus it's free...bonus!! Make sure you have a couple of hours to spare for this one if you like to read the plaques properly.

Situated just next to Slussen metro and train station this museum has a free entry. It is a very nice place to have all the knowledge regarding Stockholm City. The museum covers city's history from 9th century to the modern time. Whole timeline is divided in 3 parts and 3 floors of the museum. They have a very collection of photographs also. Old historic items along with the dresses from that time are also here. Overall the museum covers the living situation of its citizens for 1200 years and does an excellent job at it. I really liked visiting here.

The museum is well-curated chronologically and theme-wise. Not too much emphasis on Viking age, which is great because contemporary Stockholm is more interesting. The museum store is really nice, they also have a great library and cafe space. The museum has free entrance, which is a big plus point.

Interesting museum, we thought we would just check it out and ended up staying for hours. Very cheap coffee from what we saw in the city and delicious cakes at the coffee bar on the ground floor, so strongly recommended also for that.

was pleasantly surprised to realise there was a Stockholm museum specifically- but then again, I’m not sure the plethora of museums here will ever fail to amaze me this was a nice end to my last full day in the city, I didn’t get ages to look around but I did enjoy learning about the history of the place. the punk exhibit was a marvel to look at, it felt reminiscent of something in Fotografiska stockholm. the location is perfect to grab a fika in soder after this place closes :)

Lovely free museum, equipped with lockers for the small, luggage (it's quite warm inside so it was wise to leave the jacket at the locker), the rooms are interactive, you get to learn a lot about old Stockholm here. 2 hours is enough for the visit

We really enjoyed tea in the cafe, and the lockers to store coats and bags. The exhibits are very well done, and interesting to follow the city through time. However, it is 4 floors of stairs, with 2-3 sets on each floor. They have one tiny elevator, and it was out of service. That is why only 4 stars - took person with bad joints forever to make it all the way up!

A nice museum to learn about the history of the city, free entry. all explanations are in 2 languages, Swedish and English. really nice and well kept. only flaw - too many stairs because it was built in an old building but this also characterizes it more

Want to learn more about Stockholm itself? Then this is the museum for you. This unassuming museum in central Stockholm guides you through the earliest history of the city right through to the present day. On entrance there are side by side photos comparing the same scenes in the early 1900s to today which provide an insight into Stockholm's relatively rapid growth. They say Stockholm is a constantly changing and evolving city, and this museum truly shows you this. When we visited the museum was very quiet, and we had many exhibits to ourselves. The museum itself is free, so definitely with spending a morning here.

A great place to explore the history of the city. The museum is well maintained and allows one to time travel and witness the city through a different dimension. Best part is that the museum is free.

Ok since it's for free. The city is pretty recent and the musem didn't have big collection

Spent five hours there...thanks to the long opening hour Thursdays until 8pm. The multimedia and installations were effective and the notable individuals chosen to epitomize a period were educational. Unlike some museums I recently visited in Amsterdam and Brussels that asked sharp questions and prompted visitors to reflect, this museum is purely informative and entertaining, like going back to school and opening an interesting history book. There's no "message". Perhaps this has to do with the Swedish history? At the photos contrasting past and present Stockholm, the "hat box on a cake box" analogy of an ugly building and the subsequent text that "the government decided that the building must be protected for its cultural historical significance and that its appearance may not be altered" made me laugh for one minute (is this Swedish humor?).

Personally I think that the medieval museum covers the same information better. The museum is still cute to see and is free and has English descriptions

It's like a giant playground, for adults. And it's educational too. The exhibits are interactive. A section for 1700 fashion includes period clothes for you to try and photograph. The mannequin Ed exhibits are exquisite

Interesting museum, good gift shop. I liked the information and the interaction. Not very long. One of the good museums in Stockholm - if you want to visit Nordska Museum, visit this one instead!

Pleasant museum. Entrance is still free. There is a small cinema hall. The halls correspond to the time intervals. There is enough space in the cafe.

A free museum! That too is really well maintained, with three floors, each dedicated to 3 different time periods in the history of Stockholm. It even has audio visual experiences of historical sounds and sights. It's right next to Slussen T-bana station. Loved it!

Whenever visiting Stockholm and Gamla Stan area, make sure to drop by at Stockholm City Museum (Stadsmuseet i Stockholm) located at Södermalmstorg/Ryssgården, near to Tunnelbanestation Slussen. The museum has a very nice architecture, spacious, and relaxing atmosphere. The exhibits are interesting and many are interactive, frequently updated. The hat room exhibit with the virtual butler is quite hilarious. It's free entrance and friendly staff also makes it a great place to visit for family, friends, students and guests - and learn something about Stockholm and its rich history and culture. Also check out their website for group guided tour schedules/themes.
