Great day out. We went on the regular safari. It was great, and we purchased tickets for the Felix safari, which was the same just you go off road and get closer photos up close with the animals. Both were awesome. Safari in the afternoon 2:30 was cold so pack jackets. The kids really enjoyed the zoo ages 3-9, so a great family day out. Food was very reasonable, so we had breakfast and lunch at the zoo, and cheaper than eating elsewhere.

The Werribee Open Range Zoo is truly a great experience. With a diverse array of animals and a spacious environment allowing them to roam relatively freely, it offers a unique and enriching visit. While the adult admission cost of $48 might seem steep, it's comforting to know that the funds likely contribute to a good cause. The safari ride adds an exciting dimension to the visit, providing an up-close encounter with majestic creatures like giraffes, zebras, and rhinos. Witnessing these animals in a more natural setting enhances the overall zoo experience. Personally, I particularly enjoyed seeing the hippocampus – a captivating highlight that added an extra layer of fascination to my visit.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Werribee Zoo and the highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the safari ride. This unique experience took me on an exhilarating journey through the zoo’s extensive grounds, offering close encounters with a variety of wildlife in a setting that closely mimics their natural habitats. The safari ride was both educational and entertaining, providing insights into the lives of the animals we saw, including giraffes, zebras, and rhinos. The guide was knowledgeable and engaging, making the tour not only informative but also a lot of fun. The animals seemed well-cared for and the vast open spaces they roamed in were impressive. For those looking for an even more enhanced experience, I highly recommend booking the deluxe safari in advance. This premium option offers a more intimate and personalized tour, allowing for closer views and more detailed information about the wildlife and the zoo’s conservation efforts. The rest of Werribee Zoo also didn’t disappoint, with well-maintained paths, friendly staff, and a variety of animals to see. However, the safari ride is a must-do – it’s an incredible way to immerse yourself in the wild and witness the majesty of these animals up close. It’s an experience that both adults and children will find enjoyable and memorable. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning wildlife enthusiast, Werribee Zoo’s safari ride is a fantastic way to spend a day out, surrounded by the wonders of nature. Notes: Parking can be full so expect a walk in peak hours. More bins around the park would be nice.

Great zoo to visit for a day trip! There’s just enough animals to see for a day and there’s cafes to get a drink and snacks too. Really cool to be able to go on the trailer through the open range zoo and see some animals fairly close. Definitely want to come again and bring my child when she’s older.

Good place but trust me it can be managed far better. They got good variety of animals and we loved getting so close them. Not a big fan of captivating but still better than circus or private zoos. Staff is taking good care of them. Parking is bit confusing with no clear signs for parking at the entrance. First timer so was bit hard to find parking. Pro tip for safari, sit in the right hand side of the bus when you enter, you will see more animals.

Great few hours out with the family. The safari bus tour was really good fun and informative. We had a sunny day so the animals were out and easy to see. Took a 7 yo and 10 yo who loved seeing the bigger animals really closely and in an area where they can roam a lot more free than the usual city zoos. This zoo is more so about getting the animals a safe and large space to live a good life and us humans can see them, other zoos have a large attraction feel to them with smaller enclosures so we see more animals all the time.

Werribee Open Range Zoo is an amazing place to visit. The animals are well cared for and the habitats are beautiful. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The animal encounters are amazing and give you an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the animals. The self-guided safaris are great for families and there is something for everyone. The safari buses are great for getting around the zoo and the walking trails are well maintained. The food options are great too and there are plenty of places to eat. All in all, Werribee Open Range Zoo is an amazing place to visit and a great day out for the whole family. Highly recommended!

5 stars for the bride's assistant; Andy. She was attentive, helpful, patient and very caring. The couple were very happy, same with the wedding ceremony and reception guests. The other staff were great too. But for me, this was the first time I had visited the Werribee Zoo, and I don't know.... I was expecting more. Maybe the standard I had in mind was Melbourne Zoo, which is beautiful, lush and meticulously maintained. But Werribee Zoo... not so much.

Such an amazing place, this was my first visit with my wife and son. We all had the best time, we were on the Deluxe Safari and it far exceeded our expectations, our guide was a wealth of knowledge, she genuinely lived what she did. There were even areas that we didn't look as well didn't have enough time so we will need to return again soon. Thanks for an amazing day

My visit to Werribee Open Zoo was quite a mixed bag of experiences. The sheer size of the zoo was impressive, but unfortunately, the lack of animal sightings, particularly during afternoon visits, was disappointing. It felt odd wandering through a massive space without much to see. The limited variety of animals was another drawback. For a zoo of that scale, the collection felt rather limited and didn't quite match the size of the premises. This made the overall exploration less engaging than anticipated. The bus tour was a highlight, providing an opportunity to see parts of the zoo that were otherwise inaccessible. However, the downside was the tour's dusty and shaky nature, which detracted from an otherwise enjoyable experience. Considering the cost of entry, it's hard to justify the value when animal sightings are so scarce. While the zoo's vastness and the bus tour added some intrigue, the lack of animal encounters left much to be desired. Overall, my visit to Werribee Zoo left me with mixed feelings. While the expansive grounds and bus tour were interesting, the absence of animals to observe, especially during the afternoon, made it hard to fully recommend this experience, particularly considering the price point.

I have the zoos Victoria membership which is nicely priced in my opinion because its worth it for us. With it we can visit the 3 zoos here in Vic along with others around the country. Check out their website for the rates etc but definitely worth having a look at. I just thought I would mention that as well. My husband and I visited the Melbourne zoo and this a couple of weekends ago. Along with the Werribee park mansion/Gardens beside this zoo Such a lovely zoo and much bigger than I imagined. It really is worth visiting. The kids will love it too. Nothing can be paid for with cash in the zoo. Most places are like that after the pandemic but I thought it be best to mention just in case someone doesn't know.

We went to two times while school holiday. Great place for kids Exciting with animals better then city zoo animals ;))) City animals looks tired 😴 Haha Range zoo so much better. Real safari;))) Safari bus is great experience with kids. One thing, some kids scary for safari bus and looking animals. Your kids doesn’t want to take safari bus, please just don’t get in. Even do not try for adults. It’s disturbing for driver’s explanations and noise and loud for others families. With membership is so special;)) Without waiting and quick entry is of course. When you got membership card, kids love it 😍 why? Just join then you can know that ;)). Thank you for Werribee zoo staff too. They are kind and zoo keepers is friendly looks so special for kids and adults too.

Very impressed by this zoo. We enjoyed the 40 min long safari, the children's play area, and especially the display of lions. The zoo used to have a reputation that the animals were far away, however our experience was the opposite. Staff were great too!

  • 5/5 Areej 2 years ago on Google
Werribee open range zoo is one of the best places for wildlife encounters and not too far from the Melbourne CBD. The safari bus at Werribee zoo is free and offers 40 minutes Safari tour. I would suggest arriving in the morning to encounter wildlife as they are active in the morning, and you will be shocked to see that some of the animals are way too friendly and are curious when you take their picture. It might take 4 - 5 hours to explore the entire zoo, therefore give yourself enough time to cover the Werribee Zoo. If you enjoy wildlife encounters, this is the place to visit for the wildlife experience!

We had a really great day out at the Zoo! It’s our first time here and the weather was amazing, lots to see, and it wasn’t really busy (weekday) so we got plenty of time to enjoy it at our own pace. Loved the safari ride! Will definitely be back, keep it up!

The zoo really touts the safari which is completely wheelchair accessible and pretty cool. The only thing is there aren't many animals to see, about 7-8. The rest of the zoo is pretty small. Great for children and really appreciated the open range experience. As always with a zoo the earlier you arrive the better.

I've been a Zoos Victoria member for over 10 years, and Werribee Zoo never gets boring! It's a short drive from the surrounding suburbs, which means that there is minimal traffic and it's usually easy to find parking spaces. The cafes have great food, the overall environment is kept impeccable. But most importantly the wildlife, obviously monitored closely by dedicated keepers, have large enclosures also kept green by a horticulturist team. I recommend this zoo for families with children, or anyone in general, as there are tons of entertaining and educational activities for everyone to enjoy (such as the safari bus, which is where you can view most of the animals at one time). It's clear that this zoo values the protection and conservation efforts of wildlife, and visiting is what has made me want to become a zookeeper!

Absolutely loved our day out at Werribee Open Range Zoo! It's not every day you get to see majestic animals roam freely in such vast spaces, feeling almost like you're on an African safari right here in Australia. The guided bus tour was a highlight—felt so up-close and personal with the animals. The staff were friendly and passionate, always ready to share fun facts. Perfect spot for families or anyone looking to escape the city hustle. It's a reminder of the wonders of nature, and the importance of conservation. Can't wait to go back!

A pretty great zoo, they had a lot of animals that are placed in safe habitats. I went there during a sunny day, id recommend using protection from the sun to avoid sunburns. If youd like to use the safari train, be sure to arrive there as early as possible. It has to be the first thing you do, otherwise the line will be 1-2 hours long. That was the best part of the zoo since you could get really close to the animals. The food was good but lack variety so if you have dietary restrictions, be sure to bring your own. Overall, it was a great experience to have with friends and family

This was a fantastic experience for my kids. They enjoyed seeing the various animals The zoo was huge with lots of open area for the animals to roam freely. The tram ride was the highlight which was relaxing and the guide was very informative. The park trail was also a fun experience as we got to interact with the roaming animals. Overall, it was a good and fun experience for the family. I will strongly recommend this as a must visit place where you will need at least 2-3 hours to enjoy the various zones thoroughly.

A beautiful zoo with many animals, either in the safari open area or in the cages. Prices are reasonable and in the weekends children under 15 years old are free of charge. very big car parks but it is almost full on Sunday. foods inside the zoo is okay with reasonable price. also there are many rest areas and they contain children playground and models of different animals. i have enjoyed and i if you visit Melbourne it is worth to spend a day at the zoo.

It's so refreshing to visit such open spaces with the beautiful creatures of The Werribee Zoo. Helping save species from extinction is a wonderful added bonus to the great day we had. The education team do such a professional job too. The school kids on our excursion were enthralled but also came back with so many inspired questions, motivated by the group work and tours to ask all sorts of things. I challenge you to find out what types of noises the lesser know African grassland inhabitants make too. How about the features of a herbivore skull? Great time had by all.

The experience of this zoo is truly enjoyable. You can discover that they have incorporated many clever ideas to enhance the fun while strolling through the zoo. The safari experience is decent, although its quality can vary depending on the weather and your luck. However, since it's included in the ticket price, there's no reason to complain. I believe opting for the deluxe safari might be a great choice as it allows you to get closer to the wildlife.

zoo experience was absolutely amazing! 🐾🦁🐼 From the moment you stepped through the gates, you were greeted by a world filled with fascinating creatures and incredible sights. The vibrant colors of the birds, the graceful movements of the big cats, and the playful antics of the monkeys brought so much joy to your day. It was like being transported into a whole new world, where you could connect with animals from all corners of the globe. The zookeepers were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, sharing interesting facts and stories about each animal. You even had the chance to feed some of them and get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. It was an experience that left you feeling grateful for the wonders of nature and the opportunity to witness such incredible wildlife. 🌍🐾✨

Now we know why everyone loves this zoo, fantastic. The staff are knowledgeable & helpful. The Safari was such a highlight - go at lunchtime! So much to see & it's great to hear about all the conservation work happening. Plenty for the kids to do & enjoy. Definitely take swimmers for the water play area as this was lovely on a hot day. Be warned - the gift shop is good & we left with enormous fluffy leopards 🤣🤣

Open range zoo right in the western suburbs sounds super excited, however there are limited animals. We took the safari which takes about 30 min to show us the zoo area which is not allowed to walk on foot. Lots of zebras, giraffes and deers. There are hippos as well, however you don’t see wild cats there. Rest of the zoo is quite small and can be easily covered in about an hour. Good for kids always…

Love the Safari bus - it takes you around the outdoor area and the driver explains things to look out for. Great for all ages. You can't feed nor touch try animals - unless you pay for one of the special tours. You can also wall around the other areas of the park and there is a great water play area for the kids during summer.. not to mention the zoo keeper play room where kids can dress up. Compared to the other zoos I always see parents brining very young kids/babies in strollers so there are lots of places that are flat/stroller friendly.

My wife and I took our toddler there and absolutely loved it. The area was set up really well and all the exhibits were nice and close, which meant our toddler could walk around the whole park. It was a hot day and so most of the animals weren’t up to much but thankfully the rest areas for the animals are nice and close to the viewing areas so we still saw them all. The only issue was that the hippo enclosure was closed, which unfortunately was one of the animals our toddler was looking forward to the most. The bus safari was great, didn’t have to wait long at all and the bus got us nice and close to the animals, who had loads of room to roam. I can’t comment on the Australian part or the dinosaur exhibit as we didn’t visit these. Only looses a star because of the food options. We had to queue for a long time and it was expensive for what it was. Also the person in front of me had only brought cash with her and due to COVID it is card only, so she was unable to buy her food after it was served to her. So remember to bring a card with you if you want to buy anything.

Hi, I have thoroughly enjoyed this place with my kids. However, I found the following points would save you from missing any imp information. 1. Pre-bookings should happen at two time slots. 9-4 am and 4-8 pm (I might be wrong with the exact timings, please check with zoo time slots) 2. Safari is available only in the morning slot (this happened when I visited, so check with zoo team members) 3. When I visited, safari ride was about 60 minutes, after that we can go to all the places by walk and spend time accordingly. 4. In the entrance of the zoo, there is one stall ( I don't remember the name) and we get kids strollers for renting. 5. You can bring your own food or you may get some varieties there at the stalls. Hope the above points helps you whilst your visit. And, if it's sunny day then don't forget to get plenty of water, sun-screen and umbrella. Have a happy visit :)

To be honest, it was a bit disappointing.. Seemed to not be many animals, we went a long time walking along seeing empty enclosures, one after the other.. Had to wait more than 30 mins for the safari bus (they told us once we got to the end of the line), because a bus had broken down. No warning as we were lining up (we would have gone and had lunch and came back). I think the enclosures could be set up a bit better so that on hot days, the animals rest areas are near where you can see the animals. The Cafe was run off its feet too, seemingly understaffed, they messed up 2 of our orders.. Was a bit of a shambles overall. Nice to spend some time with the family, and the giraffes 🦒 and zebras 🦓 and rhinos 🦏 were great, but otherwise if I was a tourist I'd have been pretty disappointed.. Hopefully they can recover from the effects of Corona and get back into full swing soon, as I'm sure at their peak the service would be better that today. We just kind of walked around aimlessly for hours looking into enclosures, with no staff around, wondering what we were supposed to be looking at and where it was supposed to be.

It was wonderful to get back to our awesome Werribee open range zoo. The current covid restrictions actually allow patrons to have a superior experience. This is of course due to the limited numbers allowed in. Instead of long queues everything is running like clockwork. Our safari bus only had 5 of us in our carriage. Awesome day out. Staff were super friendly and glad to be back with the public.

I have lived in Uganda for the last 18 years, so to be honest, I wasn't expecting a lot. But I loved the attention to detail in the housing for the animals, the care they receive is clearly good. The abundance of rhinos was wonderful to see!

Beautiful place to visit with kids for a day out. Very well maintained and friendly staff. Plenty of picnic areas with tables and lush green grass to enjoy your meal while watching kids to run around and play. Safari bus is free and plenty of buses and time slots available each day. Kids will love it. Total safari bus trip is about 40 min Caffee and restaurants are overpriced though, if you are on a budget bring your own snacks and food.

Awesome place! You have to prebook tickets but the safari bus to totally makes up for that! A nice trip around the ginormous zoo land, but maybe the $48 dollar deluxe trip is better, because I saw one bus that went all the way a few meters away from the camels.

A brilliant day out and a wonderful place to see the animals up-close in their natural habitat. The free Safari Bus is particularly good, and although it's a little dusty, there's lots to see from the bus on all sides. Depending on personal preferences, this could be better or a bit worse than the Melbourne Zoo. The safari bus is no doubt the unique feature. It is definitely a good experience if you have never had before. However, the animals are much further away compare to a zoo with cages. That's why I give 4 stars rather than 5. The Australian Trail is pretty boring. If you have zoo membership, this place may be worth to revisit because the animals you can see on the bus can be varied.

Werribee Open Range Zoo is good for a day trip in Western Melbourne, our kids loved the safari. Safari is the highlight of the zoo trip. It's very busy during the school holidays but staff has managed trip very satisfactorily. There was no Elephants which we expected to see but Rino's, Hippos and Camel were attraction grabs plus lions and leopard was special attractions too.

This is the most attractive zoo where you can have a free safari tour and watch animals in their natural habitats. Animals live and roam together. It is a complete breath taking moment to watch them close to a foot from you. Hats off to Australian Govt and entire Werribee crew for loving and offering the bestest facilities of safety, hygiene, good food and an environment of their own. It is clearly visible how comfortable and happy the animals are. A must watch and repeated watch... Thanks to my young daughter who took us to see the beauty of Australia.

Amazing experience!! Enjoyed the neat family time while we were on Safari. Very well explained about various animals and the amiable nature of the team bring ease to people to communicate to them. Going to post few photos so that can have a brief introduction to it. Worth visiting the zoo!

Its one of the smaller zoos, the walking trails to the animals are really well put together design wise with activities to keep children engaged. Its bright and colourful trying to show natural environments that these animals would be found in. The safari ride around the paddocks is also great being able to see the animals room and the driver is very informative

Fantastic family friendly zoo in Weribee, Melbourne. Lots to see and do with plenty of activities for kids. Making fish traps and bead necklaces in the kids Bush club area was great. Lots of geese, wallabies and native birds and snakes to see in the walking areas. The bus tour has hippos, giraffes, rhinos and gazelles as well as zebras and more. Good tour guides too. The toilets and cafe are good and clean plus there's a playground and plenty of parking out front. A great day out for the family.

Love this zoo just as much as Melbourne Zoo. It's all set out with lovely large enclosures for the animals. The safari is incredible and you really feel like the animals are well cared for and have lots of space. Nice that you don't always see each animal... They have the choice to be near people or not. Well set out for kids of all ages, for adventures and play. The gardens are beautiful and the amenities are great. Love the lions, giraffes, hippopotamus and zebras... And oh the meerkats eating lunch with us! 💛

That's a great place to have a family walk or have a train ride through this Zoo to face a tradies from the train at arm’s length, but it doesn't feel like Safari tour at all, as all the animals a quite away from you and the train most of the time in movement and it doesn't give you a chance to enjoy and take the most of this journey at all. It is much better just visit an ordinary zoo where you can get more fun.

I love this zoo. I have visited it two times, definitely will visit again. I wish it was close to the city. There is a free safari bus inside the zoo. A long queue, unless you are a very lucky person, you most likely need to wait around 15-20. But, it is very worth it. I recommend you to ride the safari bus.

The Werribee Open Range Zoo offers an exciting safari experience with the opportunity to see animals up close in their natural habitat. Well maintained. However, the zoo's other sections seem to lack a diverse range of animals, and visitors may find the extensive walking trails a bit tiring. Overall, a great option for safari enthusiasts but less impressive for those seeking a variety of animal exhibits.

A great day out in the sunshine! We did a Ranger Mystery Tour, where we were taken 'behind the scenes' of the reptile house before it opened and the kids got to help the rangers give medications, mist the tanks, place enrichments for the animals and take/record the temperatures. Then, after a day or roaming (and getting drenched in the water play area), we did a Deluxe Safari - well worth the upgrade from the free tour, we drove off track and got right up close to the animals. The kids (and the adults!) had a blast.

Fantastic Zoo. Especially the children's safari bus which is at 10am Mon - Fri. This is a must do!! My son who is 3 was blown away how close we got to the like of Rhinos, giraffes and many other animals. The animals have open enclosures that make them feel like they are in the wild. Super big spaces for them to roam around.

This is the best zoo n Melbourne We visited it today and the weather was great- not too hot, not too cold, no sunny. It was cool and perfect for walking in the zoo. The air is so fresh. The staff was so nice and friendly. We all loved the Safari bus tour. I am a wheelchair user. They had a well organised for those like me. On the Safari tour, we had chance to see and were introduced to diverse wild animals. Highly recommended

Visiting Werribee Open Zoo was truly fascinating! It was a fulfilling experience, especially witnessing the animals roam freely and revel in their natural habitat. However, the size of the zoo seemed a bit overwhelming compared to the number of animals present, making it challenging to get up close and personal with them. Improving the guidance provided and increasing the number of zoo crew members could greatly enhance the overall experience for visitors.

The bus safaris are an amazing way to see packs of African animals freely roaming. The zoo is involved in critical conservation efforts which is also a huge plus. Highly recommend one of the "encounters" on your visit. We took the "Off-road Safari" and were driven right up to some of the animals (they were given a respectful berth of course). Our guide Georgia was lovely and extremely informative!

The exhibits were well sized for each animal. My favourite part was the bus ride out into the ranges where I saw giraffes, zebras and more. Everyone got a chance to see the animals which was great unlike some tours else where, where only those on first get to see. The food unfortunately let this rating down. I bought a cheese toastie and it was a cold toasted sandwich for around $8! (from memory) and left me hungry) The gift shop was fun but overpriced.

Favourite Zoo ever! So so so much space for the animals and for people too so you're not feeling crammed in and neither are the animals. It's so nice to leave a Zoo and feel good about the experience, not feeling the slightest bit bad for the animals or like they are trapped and on display since there is so much space for them to roam around as normal and interact with other animal species like they would in the wild. Membership is 100% the best way to go about visiting Zoo's in Melbourne, it's a no brainer!

On a nice day this place can get really busy and parking horrendous, but the open plan of the place still makes for a pleasant experience. The way they've set up the exhibits is well done and really engaging for the children. Meerkat enclosure at the restaurant is particularly good. Mainly African animals here like a small pride of lions and family group of gorillas, but there is a great little Australiana section for foreign visitors as well. The highlight of the zoo is its open range safari, where you take an open bus to get up close and personal with the non-enclosed animals like the giraffes. Expect a long queue though if busy.

To start with Delightful Safari bus ride through Savannah (right here in Melbourne) with close up views of Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebras and Ostriches. Nice walk through the Australian-native and African animal-trails. About 2-3 hours enough to see everything which is great for parents with young kids (As they don't get too tired). Plenty of play zones and refreshments. It would be helpful to have more signage to move around easily without getting lost in and out (car park needs better signs too) of the zoo.

A zoo where even the native animals are scarse. They have a massive fake Dino park, and a few random animals. We walked an entire morning in a packed zoo and saw like 3 animals. If you want a really expensive day in the park this is the place to be.

Our second favourite of the Vic Zoos. Nice spaces to walk around, the lions are always great and walking free range with the roos is fun. Can't beat the safari adventure ride either! Lost a star for our most recent visit... Perhaps they are understaffed for busy times to control social distancing measures and mask wearing requirements better. These were near nonexistent about a week ago. We felt disappointed at the complacency we experienced during our visit.

Awesome day, the safari is running again but make sure you get there early to do it as the ques were insane.

  • 5/5 Humphrey L. 3 years ago on Google
Great Zoo just bear in mind the zoo is massive and on a hot day it can be a struggle. The dinosaurs are quite far from the start and go down hill and up hill with pram can be tricky. There is a nice air conditioned play area near the toilets. The change rooms for kids don’t have toilet so use the disabled next to the women’s. The safari bus is free with a ticket. I didn’t know this because it asked me to pay for the deluxe which is something else.

A great day out at the zoo. The safari was the highlight and we didn’t need to wait too long. We managed to get a glimpse of some of the baby animals during the safari. The Dinos at the Zoo exhibition should not be missed. Would recommend taking a picnic lunch as there are nice areas to have a picnic.

It was a FANTASTIC, AMAZING trip to Werribee Open Range Zoo. I really enjoyed the Safari trip with my son watching animals closely. By the way, it was the first time I saw Rhino and hippo in my life! It was enjoyable moment 💕💕 I really recommend visiting this zoo. Finally, I’m planning to go back there in autumn season, to enjoy the nature and take amazing photos for animals and their habitats.

I was an awesome experience. Could see them right by the open window safari truck. Loved it

  • 4/5 Don T. 3 years ago on Google
This would be my least favourite of the 3 Melbourne Zoos due to its open range nature and the ability of the animals to hide from view. Always looking to entice more visitors they have now added an extensive life size dinosaur exhibit you can walk through. No fencing at all even though one would think they'd be pretty dangerous creatures... ;)

I visited right after Christmas and it seems like most of the state had the same idea! Busiest day I've even seen at the zoo and a long line to ride the safari tour. We were lucky to get there just before opening and rode the 3rd safari bus of the day. By the time we had finished the line was all the way back to the entrance. I highly recommend heading directly for the safari tour or paying a little extra and taking the private tour over the open area. Even if you had to wait in line there is a bit of shade and a nice wide path to line up in. We got to see the day old Zebra so very much worth the lines. You can see the rest of the zoo in one walking loop. You can buy food but I suggest bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy on one of the lovely grassy areas. There are lockers you can hire for the day or if you have an eski with wheels you can cart it along with you.

Love this place Unlike other zoos where it is more natural for animals. The Safari Bus tour is amazing. Everyone should try it. One negative thing though is the zoo map. It's not clear enough to help navigate through the place nor are there enough clear signs to guide people through. It's something more ire of administration thing. Pricing is fair. Kids enter for free on public holidays, school holidays and weekends and so no excuse not to visit.

Had a great day out with our family and a few friends. The Zoo is well laid out, with lots of good exhibits. I wasn't sure what to expect, but everything was very good. Animals were great, and the Safari bus you can take to view zebras, giraffe, rhino etc was good too. A really good experience for the kids to see some African animals. Also lots of local animals too of course.

(Translated by Google) The entrance fee is 38 yuan. The park car is free, comfortable and easy to see the animals, but the land in the park car is too large and there are too few animals, and the car will raise dust from time to time. If you want to get closer to the animals, you need a paid park car. The facilities in the park are quite suitable Bring children to play, there are sand play areas, small water spray areas, slide areas, and food or souvenir shops, as well as a small realistic one-to-one dinosaur park, African traditional musical instrument performances, and animals on foot in the park. Fortunately, the species of animals are divided into Africa and Australia. Australia is quite empty (Original)

Disappointing. Couldn’t hear the driver in the safari ride, didn’t get close enough to the animals. I do understand that they are meant to be in the ‘wild’ but could a better view at other zoos. The gardens and eating areas where lush and there was enough seating areas.

Awesome experience! Definitely recommend going on the safari as soon as you arrive then leisurely stroll around the rest of the grounds... especially if you have little ones as they could get tired and grumpy later in the day if you you have to wait in line. This was our first time at the Werribee zoo and I have to say I personally found it way better then the Melbourne zoo (we use to live near there so we went to the Melbourne zoo ALOT! and never had I seen/been so close to animals as I saw at Werribee. The safari tours was just so good. I don't know if we just got lucky on the day/time we went but the animals came so close and we were able to get wonderful views of all the animals. AMAZING. And also so many areas to sit and chill/ eat/ relax. They have a hippo beach area where the kids can play with water so don't forget to pack some spare clothes an towels cause when the kids see the water you won't be able to keep them out

Though it was well managed. But we didn't know about the deluxe so unfortunately we took the normal bus tour. Too many kids and they were all screaming. We couldn't hear the guide on the speakers at all. We didn't hear any information about the animals we saw. We sat on the right hand side of the bus and most of the animals were on the left so we couldn't see anything as well. I wish we had known about the deluxe tickets.. Much more expensive but way better.

We may have chosen a slightly cooler day in summer to have visited, but the water fountains (hippo area) managed to keep the kids cooled off at the end of the day. Overall great experience. Great place to visit with children. We spent about 4 hours here and covered the whole park. The highlight was the Safari bus trip which goes for about 40 minutes included with the entrance ticket where you can see zebras, hippos, rhinos and giraffes amongst other African animals up close. We went on it twice! We visited during school holidays and it was not overly crowded. We did not have to wait at all to get on the safari bus which departed every 10 minutes or so as there are about 5 or 6 carriages for each bus. The dinosaur replicas felt a little out of place in the zoo, but the kids enjoyed it nonetheless. We were able to pack our own lunch and had a lovely picnic in the playground on site. Plenty of picnic sites throughout the park.

Park at owners risk states the signage shame money hasnt been spent improving this area re potholes, anyone visiting in a wheelchair suggest you clearly ensure they can accomadate you prior to visiting. Its a score of 2 out of ten, sadly its money money,

Great place to visit with kids Love the way the animals are not kept in cages. Dino park is super cool. Sometimes it’s hard to see animals as they are in dens or other side of their zone. So, you’ll need couple of rounds to see all the animals You’ll have to go on the safari to get the most of the visit otherwise you won’t see most of the antelopes such as zebras, giraffes

  • 5/5 Luke H. 3 years ago on Google
What a wonderful day out. I visited with my parents and my children and we were all very impressed. This zoo feels more relaxed to go with younger kids than Melb zoo. The safari is fantastic and you get to see zebras, rhinos, hippos, giraffes and so many more. Two choices of restaurants to choose from. They usually have sprinklers on for kittl kids to jump around in summers near hippo cafe so you can pack swimmers in case they get wet. Parking is plenty and free too

Amazing animals kept in humane, wide open spaces. Would highly recommend going. Their main goal is to prevent extinction, if that’s not enough to convince you I don’t know what is!

We were quite was disappointed,l. long queue but bus was too cramped to see anything over people on the other side. Animals were either to far or asleep on the tour. Walked around and didn't see many animals there either. The only thing we enjoyed was the Zoorasic park section with dinosaur display. It's a nice place to picnic but Melbourne Zoo is much better.

Didn’t know emu’s hissed... was hissed at by an emu when walking past. Not sure if I’ve unlocked an achievement for this one? Food at the restaurant is good - a nice surprise. The safari tour is great even as an adult & kept my daughter excited from start to finish.

I just visited Werribee Zoo yesterday, on 19th Feb 2021. We could barely see any animals and lack of direction to visitors. Not worth spending $88 per person. Instead, I could see more birds and animals on Youtube. Also, the safari tour was way shorter than expected. I would not recommend anyone to go there.

Love the zoo! Didn't get to see the hippo today, but all other animals look happy and chill. The Safari was such an awesome experience! There were no windows on the bus, you can actually have the ostrich right next to you that you can smell its breath.

Always a nice place to take the kids or fam out to. Nice drive if ur about over an hr away from there also. Kids will love it. Good for picnic. Would recommend you buy a yearly membership though if you decide to go more than once, because membership gives you access to all zoos in Melbourne, so way more worth it. And also, buy or bring your food and drinks prior to arriving, as prices there are crazy high. Enjoy

Disappointing, with it being the 4th year we have attended and always been a great night, this year was very disappointing. Totally understand changes due to covid, however nothing other than safari bus was really on offer, previously we had drinks on arrival and delicious African inspired food included in entry price. This year food and drinks were additional costs, food queues long and food quality poor. Unlikely to attend future sunset safari events.

Great day out! Plenty of things to do and see. A little crowded between 11 and 1pm, but then settles down. Will go back often. Worth the membership if you're going a few times in the year. Super friendly staff. Fair prices on the snacks and coffee, but it's worth noting you can bring your own lunch and have a picnic.

I went on a weekday (Friday) so the zoo was quite empty apart from school kids and some families. I'm assuming due to this a lot of the eateries were closed apart from the one near the entrance. I would highly recommend the Deluxe Safari as it made my trip! Our guide Ali was very friendly and knowledgeable, we really enjoyed our experience.

It was a new experience for all of us. Once we checked in, the safari bus arrived. Had a great opportunity to have a closer look at the animals and a wonderful view of the sounding. All the necessary amenities are around. A lovely way to spend some time with your family and friends. It is always nice to see animals are looked after with care and love. I think these guys are doing a fantastic job. Catch me @volarphotography

Great experience for the family. The zoo itself is very wide and animals in general have lots of space which is great for them - and it also means that you might not be able to spot all the animals. The safari bus is a nice experience (about forty minutes) with very informative facts about animals, their habitats but also their countries of origin. You can admire rhinos, giraffes and zebras from very close and even closer if you book a special tour. There are plenty of grass areas or picnic tables with amenities for kids to play (sandpit, monkey bars, slides etc ..) and when we went there they have friendship bracelet making for kids and dancing shows. Special expositions are often available (we saw the dinosaurs one) and it is surely interesting to come back from time to time to see what's new.

  • 5/5 Paolo F. 2 years ago on Google
We're Zoo members and live close by, so it's great to pop in and out for a couple of hours. Being members you know you can come back whenever you want, so don't need to squeeze every single thing in on a single trip.. The kids absolutely love the place, but sometimes just want to go to play in the playground and don't care about the animals.

Slumber Safari! What a fantastic experience. Sleeping in a glamping tent with behind the scenes tours, amazing food, and the staff really added to the whole experience, fun, informative and friendly. Worth getting there in the morning to explore the zoo before the overnight experience, we paid for the smaller bus tour during the day, well woth it for a more personal experience as well. Werribee Mansion a must see whilst your there!

Nice little zoo with a massive safari ride. Best to get in early before the lunch time rush. Limited seating so be prepared. The zoo it self is fairly small compared to Melbourne zoo, however many animals for the kids to see. The safari makes up for it with a massive wide open range, has a Jurassic park feel to it lol. Worth a visit.

  • 5/5 Nora 2 years ago on Google
Never have a bad time at the open range zoo. The safari bus trip is the best part of visiting but also knowing you have helped in some small way to conservation efforts is also great. Lots and lots of people there when we went over the Christmas break but we'll organised. Just have to time your lunch and lining up for the safari bus correctly or be prepared for long queues. Hand sanitiser stations everywhere there was a door to open.

This place is so magical. You can see these animals up-close in their natural habitat. It is also good to know that whoever visits the zoo will be contributing towards the well being of these animals. It’s a little dusty so maybe wear a mask during the safari

I took my daughter and friend here on a Sunday and we availed of the deluxe safari. It was a lovely 75minute tour around the safari where we get to see giraffes, rhinos and hippos up close. There was even a naughty ostrich named Jess. If its your first time to visit, I recommend their deluxe safari.

Amazing place for all ages. Just a humbling reminder of how much we actually impact the world. It's up to the individual to choose if it is a positive or negative one. But experiences like the open range zoo is definitely helping to tilt the balance to the positive side, one visitor at a time

Went on a Friday afternoon, cloudy day not hot at all and not crowded at all. Open Range / Safari zoo is not available in all cities / countries. I’m lucky enough to see some big animals like Rhinos / Hilppos / Cheetahs / Antilopes. Kids now can relate the animal 🦒 🦓 🦁 sizes 😂 and won’t think a zebra is about the same size as a rhino 😂

Loved it! The safari bus was brilliant even though the rain came in taking the lunch time bus meant we pretty much saw all of the animals and some up really close too!

My sons and I had an amazing time. I highly recommend doing the Deluxe safari adventure. Smaller group, lots of info and you get close to the animals. There is lots to see, the animals looks well looked after, the habitats are clean plus they are very proactive with wildlife conservation. Highly recommend the Werribee Open Range Zoo!

Great place for a day out. When you visit the zoo you can feel the nature. There is more green and less concrete. I really enjoyed the play areas for kids built at different locations of the park to engage children. The walk along the Werribee river was soothing. Although the animals here are less than the Melbourne zoo, I would visit this zoo for a different reason that is to have a calming, soothing and beautiful day out with the family. Also, I was able to see the animals here more closely and actually see them 3 meters away. There is also an option for safari at extra cost.

  • 5/5 Fikri J. 10 months ago on Google
It was fun especially the Safari Tour. The tour itself is worth the ticket price so that’s something not to be missed. It started to rain halfway through our visit so we couldn’t really complete covering the whole zoo. Don’t expect to see 1000 animals there though but the gorillas are one of the highlights. Nonetheless, still a pleasant trip and great experience in an open range zoo.

  • 5/5 Anh Dao N. 9 months ago on Google
The zoo is a bit far from the city center. We went in the afternoon, just in time to catch the last safari bus at 3:30pm. Sitting on an open bus and watching the wild animals up close are very nice expenrice. We also went along the trail to see other animals, so happy to see the kangaroo and koala. I recommend going in the morning so you can have enough time to explore the zoo.

We had a fantastic day at Werribee Open Range Zoo today. Getting there was easy, heaps of parking and being members we were straight in. Lots of animals to see, heaps of things for the kids to do. We had a great chat with two staff members about what we had seen and the kids were also shown some cool snake skins and animals bones while waiting for the bus tour. Easy to find toilets and the cafes to get food. All in all, a great visit and we will return.

Go! Deluxe Safari tour was definitely worth it. Close enough to shake 🐾! Welcoming & friendly staff everywhere! Lots of great picnic areas and cafes. The entire Zoo truly captures the African vibe esp with the live drumming, fun dancing, face painting etc. My favourite hands down is the Ethiopian coffee ceremony. To sit & enjoy hot coffee with popcorn & bread was amazing. Definitely coming back! Favourite animal visit was 🦏 🦍🦓🦛! Looking forward to the completion of renovations etc… 🐘 are coming!🎉 Gift shop is great with reasonable prices.

Ahh the photos and videos will do justice of this place! Honestly an amazing place and you can spend half a day here with the wild life, I personally think the experience is better than other wide life sanctuary! (Highly recommend the deluxe than the regular entry)

Highlight of my trip! Our guide Georgia was so knowledgeable! I purchased the Deluxe Safari and this is well worth it. The general public bus was provided and included in admission, but was a large bus that held about 100 people, including many children (not for me), and because of the size of the bus, it could only stay on the road. Our deluxe safari bus only had 9 people, and we were able to drive off road right to see the animals.. We were just a few metres away from all the giraffes, rhinos, ostriches and zebras. 5 stars for sure!!

I love coming to Werribee Zoo. This place has lots to offer for children and adults. Membership is affordable with excellent benefits. It's worth checking to get a membership with unlimited entry and discounts. The highlight is joining the 40-50 minute Safari Bus. Amy, our bus guide, offered excellent knowledge about the animals we encountered on our tour. Amy added her touch about the animal’s personality and great exciting facts. Everyone in the Tour bus in my group was impressed and left happy. Their main restaurant has a great food selection from $10-$30. You have the kiosk for quick hot chips, chicken nuggets for the kids and a selection of pies. Of course, there's ice cream to choose from and drinks. There's plenty of parking on-site and walking distance to the main entrance. It's a nice drive to the Werribee. You can visit the Werribee Mansion and the garden area.

Had such a lovely time at the open range zoo. We went on the safari and our guide during the 11:30 safari tour was fantastic. He kept us informed about each animal and his 'tongue in cheek' quips were hilarious, especially the one about where the rhinos bought their natural moisturisers from (when we were at the mud hole). There was so much to see and do after the safari. The food at the Meerkat Bistro was quite good. We had the 'ham and egg' bun' with chips and latte. Worth every dollar spent at the zoo.

  • 4/5 Jazlin O. 6 months ago on Google
Really enjoyed my time here. The zoo was quite small but because there wasn’t too many people it didn’t feel crowded. So of the animals were not near the viewing area so we actually don’t get to see much of them. Only managed to catch a glimpse of a gorilla before he went off to a hiding spot. There was also only 1 koala in the zoo. Really recommend going on the tram ride, such a breath taking experience to look at the giraffe up close. They do have some new segments that was under renovation (apparently for elephants!!). There were also some lion cubs. Highly recommend going for a visit later in the year.

Slumber Safari @ Werribee Zoo was an amazing experience for the family. This place offered a camping experience of being in a tent with all your personal amenities one needs for camping. After settling into our family tent we grouped together and went on a night walk of the zoo. Followed by a nice warm meal and hot chocolate by the outdoor open fire. The next day followed by a private tour of the zoo and a close experience with the rhinoceros and giraffes in the savannah. Highly recommend, lots of great fun for families.

Such a great zoo. I was in a wheelchair and the venue is accessible, including a lift available for getting onto the safari buses. The wheelchair is available for free hire. You can take your own food in, I even saw a birthday party being held. Entry for kids is free on Victorian School Holidays and weekends.

You HAVE to do the Safari experience when you go here. I found that the most interesting animals outside of the Safari were either hidden away, inactive, or just not there. Pretty cool to have an Emu pop out of the bushes right next to you and casually walk past while you freak out a bit. But Safari is where it's at! Super cool tour guides there too that keeps it extra interesting and lay down some great jokes.

  • 4/5 Vaman G. 4 months ago on Google
Great zoo but one sad point is the gorilla enclosure. I don't think it reflects the typical habitat of gorillas, particularly with its lack of vegetation. The poor things were trying to shield themselves from the cold. Apart from that, the rest of the zoo was interesting and the animals looked happy.

My husband and I, had a wonderful time on Early Morning Savannah Experience. Ranger Paul warmly welcomed us with a big smile 😊 and friendly. He is very experienced, knowledgeable, and responsible (remind us about safety). Any questions that we asked, he will definitely answered us. We had a great time chatting and sharing our experiences with the animals we've encountered before. Once again thank you Ranger Paul and Werribee Zoo staffs for giving us such a great memories.

Try avoid going on weekends and you'll have a much better time. Whilst the staff there were nothing short of amazing, the range of animals wasn't so much! Would recommend Monarto Zoo in SA over this one. All that taken in, still a nice place to visit!

There was a big line to enter the zoo even after purchasing tickets online. There was no separate queue for online ticket holders. So there is no point purchasing tickets online. The zoo was really big, kids enjoyed the safari. It was a bit disappointing as there were not a lot of animals, no elephants, tigers, pandas, kangaroo, snakes, or crocodiles.

This is such a fun zoo to visit. Great to bring the families, school groups or for work functions (which is what we did). We played a scavenger hunt game and had so much fun seeing the animals and learning lots. The safari is definitely a highlight and a must do to get up close to some beautiful creatures. The staff are all passionate and highly educated in conservation and protection. Highly recommend if you're looking for a fun corporate event you look here for something different.

A great day out with family, I personally enjoyed the Safari tour and the detailed explanations Maurice provided as our guide, my son loved the tour so did my husband. We went there over new years holidays and the parking and restaurant was packed, but nothing could beat the excitement of this adventure to drive through animals’ habitat. Totally worth the money and long drive .I had booked my tickets online which saved a lot of time bcz the queue was super long, definitely book your trip in advance.

Great experience here doing the safari. We checked out the lions and monkeys and a couple of things afterwards but the safari was the highlight. There was plenty on for the kids to make a day of it with a party area with DJ and bubble machine going on and various talks on at different times. Baby scythe-horned antelope, baby zebras and lion cubs visible. Toilets were good. Plenty of parking. Kids being free in school holidays was great. We bought tickets from a third party so had to queue to get in (saved $9), but if you buy direct or are a member you skip the queue.

Excellent up close experiences with some of the most popular animals. Zoo staff have excellent animal knowledge and are happy to be asked questions. There are daily keeper talks scheduled and it’s possible to cruise the zoo and listen to all the talks, which were informative and focused heavily on the zoo’s conservation efforts. The zoo safari was a highlight. Animal encounters are not guaranteed as the zoo is big on animals behaving naturally and having choice about where they graze and interact. However, when we went we had several animals right next to our bus. There are free water fountains dotted around the park, so bring a reusable bottle to fill up. The cafe offers all the usual foods you would expect and a coffee hatch is also available for quick pot stops.
